Book Description

Begin with basic circles and develop two-, three-, and four-ribbon spirals. Then square off spirals to form frets and mazes and fashion key patterns from easy-to-draw triangles. Color in brilliant tones, following tips on traditional Celtic style; make a bold effect by blackening the background or try another method for adding texture; and apply the patterns to applique, batik, calligraphy, and more. “Inspiring...a great source.”—Bead & Button.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best step by step book on Celtic Design!.......2002-02-26

After purchasing many Celtic design books, this is the best book with detail instructions and the proces of Celtic Knotwork. If you are a teacher you will enjoy this book because it gives several examples on how to create spiral works and knot works. Is easy for students to understand and for a teacher to recreate. I will said after purchasing this book I really understood the whole process. I greatly recommend it!

              Book Description

The original Pretty Good Joke Book was pretty darn funny. But it can’t hold a trick candle to the latest edition of this perennial favorite. With more than 200 new jokes, this book runs the gamut from giggles to belly laughs, from gentle chortles to roll-on-the-floor hilarity. We’ve got bar jokes and lawyer jokes. Minnesota jokes and Iowa jokes. Old people jokes and Yo’ Mama jokes. Knock-knocks, puns, one-liners, and lightbulb jokes. IRS jokes, religion jokes, and Ole and Lena jokes. Jokes about sports, death, heaven, politics, current events…have we left anything out? As always, our Pretty Good Joke Book attempts to be ecumenical. Nothing is sacred—not even Martha Stewart, who, by the way, has a new recipe for chicken casserole. You boil the chicken and dump the stock. Garrison Keillor on jokes: "What good is greatness without a sense of humor?" "Jokes are democratic. Telling one right has nothing to do with having money or being educated. It's a knack, like hammering a nail straight. Anyone can learn it, and it's useful in all sorts of situations. You can go your whole life and not need math or physics for a minute, but the ability to tell a joke is always handy." "Satire, kids, is your sacred duty as Americans. Be funny. Poke them cows and make them moo."

4 out of 5 stars Good companion to the CDs.......2007-07-20

I got this after I already had the Joke Show CDs. I was telling all the jokes I'd heard, but having trouble remembering many of them. This is a great way to get the jokesa in writing. There are a few new ones, but overall it's best after you've already heard the CDs (which are 5 star in my book :-)

Originally, i bought this at Mall of America and left it on our coffee table. During thanksgiving, all family members took turns finding a joke to share. It was so fun, i bought one for my Dad, who is going through chemo-therapy and it has lifted his spirits, when nothing else did.

I bought this book for my dad who loves to tell jokes. Some of them or on the corny side but overall this is a great book for someone who loves to learn new jokes.

              Book Description

Our popular Pretty Good Joke Tape features all of the jokes from A Prairie Home Companion's first four Joke Shows. But that's not enough for fans. Hence, A Few More Pretty Good Jokes, with all the jokes from the April 1, 2000 and April 6, 2002 Joke Shows. A treasury of hilarity, it's full of knee-slapping one-liners ("When it comes right down to it, dyslexics have more nuf"), laugh-out-loud lightbulb jokes ("How many University of Iowa freshman does it take to screw in a light bulb?" "None. That's a sophomore course"), silly third-grade jokes ("Where do otters come from?" "Otter space"), classic chicken-crossing-the-road jokes ("Hemingway said, 'He crossed the road. To die. In the rain'") and outrageous Yo'Mama insults ("Yo' Mama's so fat, she was in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade... wearing ropes"). Plus the usual puns, howlers, relationship jokes, man-walks-into-a-bar jokes, religious jokes, ethnic jokes, political jokes, sports jokes, musician jokes, lawyer jokes ("What is the difference between a woodtick and a lawyer?" "A woodtick falls off you when you die") and more. This live recording features Calvin Trillin, comedian Monteria Ivey, fiddler Phil Cunningham and Prairie Home regulars Sue Scott, Tim Russell and Tom Keith. Garrison Keillor hosts. Like the original, it's audience-tested and certified Pretty Good. Over 1 hour on 1 audiocassette or 1 CD

We purchased this set of Kieller's Joke programs because we like jokes and they help while away the time while traveling. No matter how many times we listen to one of these CDs -- just about every trip -- they still keep us in stitches, making the most boring trip a pleasure. While other CDs are cycled in and out of the car, this set remains.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Quips.......2003-03-03

Using the style of old-time one liners that just keep you laughing and the interaction of musical introductions, this CD keeps you laughing.

Keillor draws on his usual subjects, Norwegians, "Olly and Lena", jokes that could apply to any ethnic group for some of the time, but the 3rd grader jokes are especially funny and useful for a family "uplifter". Some are groaners, some slapstick style, but all are funny, even if you heard them before.

              A good buy!

This is a compilation of two of Prairie Home Companion's famous joke shows. The single cassette is filled with about an hour of rapid-fire, mostly short jokes. Content varies from fun but silly knock knock jokes and puns, to more adult topics such as doctor, lawyer, light bulb, and relationship jokes. Nothing too bold or dirty, just some old fashioned fun with at least a few memorable one-liners for everyone. A nice mix of rolling eye groans and belly laughs. I often had to rewind to catch the joke that was proceeding during my laughter at the previous one.

                  Book Description

Isabelle Huppert stands out among actresses due to her audacious choices of roles, both for films as well as for the theater. Her intelligence and intuition are evident in the parts she plays. Her renown as an actress is not limited to the French cinema but embraces Europe and the rest of the world.

This most mysterious of actresses likes to be photographed but she is not an easy subject. She offers herself to the eye of the camera yet remains secretive, almost absent. The great photographers of our time—Richard Avedon, Edouard Boubat, Guy Bourdin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliot Erwitt, Lartigues, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Sylvia Plachy, Marc Riboud, and Scavullo—took up the challenge. Huppert's energy and strength are often shrouded behind a kind of melancholy, and these photographers have captured beautifully that contradictory quality. Not only a collection of gorgeous images, this haunting book also unveils the bond between the public image and the secret soul of this unique woman.

5 out of 5 stars ...and God created Isabelle Huppert.......2006-07-02

What can one say about the fabulous Isabelle Huppert. Probably the greatest actress in the last 30 years. No other actress seems to capture the roughness, the coldness, the reality of everyday life quite like Mrs. Huppert.

This book shows and portays in pictures the true Isabelle Huppert. Each picture is perfectly shot and shows true emotion and captures her presence that has stolen millions of fans all over the Globe. Beautifully put together collection of rare and unseen photos, this book is a steal for movie and photo lovers.

I've been a big fan since the early 80's and her performances keep getting better and better. French filmakers always consider her "The Movie". Even though some movies she starred in were not great productions, her acting alone is worth it.

Here are a few of her movies that must be seen:

                  Gabrielle (2005)-Very intense dialog driven
Soeurs fâchées, Les (2004)-A cold city person with humor
Vie promise, La (2002)-A lost soul
8 femmes (2002)-She steals the show even with such a cast
Pianiste, La (2001)-A must see, Only Huppert fits this role
Merci pour le chocolat (2000)-Ah! That great Hot Chocolate!
École de la chair, L' (1998)-Ah! The famous affairs and one night stand... or more!
Palmes de M. Schutz, Les (1997)-Inspiration and devotion
Cérémonie, La (1995)-Cold, Revengeful and plain Maniac
Séparation, La (1994)-You feel sorry for Daniel Auteuil (Another amazing actor)
Madame Bovary (1991)-The role that made her an International star
Une affaire de femmes (1988)-Guts and Courage
                  Cactus (1986)-Unsentimental but Magical
Coup de foudre (1983)-Pain, Anger and violent jealousy
Coup de torchon (1981)-Innocense and Free Spirited
Heaven's Gate (1980)-Her introduction to the US market
Loulou (1980)-Not a great film but Huppert and Depardieu steal the screen
Dentellière, La (1977)-This performance made her a major star in Europe
Valseuses, Les (1974)-Another "Let Loose" performance

Hope this helps out all of you that has never seen or heard of Isabelle Huppert. Once you've seen a few of these films, you won't stop until you've seem them all.

                  Book Description

Ives's second piano sonata, Concord, Mass., 1845, stands among the masterpieces of American music. The Essays Before a Sonata was conceived by Ives as a preface of sorts to the composition. Ives's musings also explore the nature of music, discuss the source of a composer's impulses and inspiration, and offer some biting comments on celebrated masters. The writings in this collection-now featuring a comprehensive index-allow readers entry into the brilliant mind that produced some of America's most innovative musical works.

A highly original writer, Ives can be a tough read. He follows his asides & digressions in prose much the same way as he does in music. But he dragged Transcendentalism (moaning & groaning) into the 20th Century, wrote a philosophy of insurance sales that is still consulted today, & was not afraid to call for a national referendum prior to the United States committing to war. His ideas about creativity remain, at the core, uncomfortably radical for most of his admirers. Bob Rixon, WFMU-FM

November 3067 saw the culmination of work two centuries in the making, work begun by Primus Conrad Toyama of ComStar, successor to Jerome Blake and the man responsible for single-handedly turning ComStar into a pseudo-religious organization with a vision: to lead mankind to the light... by any means necessary. When the Star League self-destructs, a shadowy power behind the fanatical Word of Blake pulls the strings taut in righteous anger, launching a war to bring humanity to its knees. But amidst the chaos and confusion swirling across a thousand light years, all is not as it appears. Friend becomes foe and today's truth is the lie of tomorrow. Can the Inner Sphere survive the opening of ComStar's box of secrets? Dawn of the Jihad shakes the Classic BattleTech® universe to its foundation, documenting the opening year in a decades-long struggle for the very survival of humanity. The series of events presented in this book unfold in a rolling format, allowing readers to immerse themselves more directly into the action than ever before. Players of both Classic BattleTech and Classic BattleTech RPG™ will also find framework rules to run almost any type of campaign set in this chaotic time.

                  4 out of 5 stars A must-have for any Classic Battletech fan.......2007-02-02

I was sorry to see Battletech go after Loren Coleman's "Endgame", but got right back into it (now Mechwarrior) with the release of Dark Age. Even though DA is ok, I still prefer the classics, so I was really excited to see that the gap between the two time periods was going to be bridged. I must also agree with the first reviewer of this book - FanPro tried to 'fudge' its way out of having to produce both novels and sourcebooks by kinda mashing the two into one. Although I did enjoy the book, it really wasn't what I was hoping for. I was also hoping for something akin to the FedCom Civil War, but what can you do? I would actually give this book 3.5 stars if I could, but I decided to round up for the sheer fact that Battletech continues to live and thrive in a renewed galaxy of unprecidented chaos.

5 out of 5 stars Jihad at last!.......2005-12-15

Unlike the first two reviewers I enjoyed the new layout and the media stories. I enjoyed the fact that the book left a lot of open ends for authors to follow up on later. I was not as interested in what regiment hit where, that I think will come in a later book. Without novels to expand the story line, TRO's are changing to allow us to stay in time with the universe and this does that very well. Hopefully [...] will follow up with stories that tie up loose ends.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good so far.......2005-11-18

Like the other reviewer, I'm not a big fan of the "news story" format, but I still think this is a good sourcebook. It kind of leaves you hanging when it comes to some of the info, but that's what will make me buy the other sourcebooks when they are published. I just hope that all is eventually revealed in these sourcebooks, rather than having to glean things from other sources like their online publisher battlecorps.

3 out of 5 stars Dismay. Bewilderment. The Inner Sphere upside-down........2005-11-15

First, I want to say that I'm not a fan of the new format FanPro has picked up for its recent run of sourcebooks. I was expecting sometime akin to the FedCom Civil War, with details on which divisions hit where, so on and so forth. Nope. This book is done up similar to Interstellar Players, as a collection of breaking news stories and political commentary show-clips. Inventive, but not what I was hoping for.

That being said, I did enjoy the book. It addresses the opening steps of the Word of Blake Jihad in all of the Successor States, the counter-actions of ComStar, and even some unconnected but similar unrest amongst the Clans. The Word of Blake believes that they are leading humanity to the light. . . but in reality are plunging it into impenetrable darkness.

                  Book Description

Before there was Osama bin Laden, Abu al-Zarqawi or Ayatollah Khomeini, there was the Mahdi-the "Expected One"-who raised the Arabs in pan-tribal revolt against infidels and apostates in the late 19th-century Sudan.

Born on the Nile in 1844, Muhammed Ahmed grew into a devout, charismatic young man, whose visage was said to have always featured the placid hint of a smile. He developed a ferocious resentment, however, against the corrupt Ottoman Turks, their Egyptian lackeys, and finally the Europeans who he felt held the Arab people in subjugation. In 1880, he raised the banner of holy war, and thousands of warriors flocked to his side.

The Egyptians dispatched a punitive expedition to the Sudan, but the Mahdist forces destroyed it. In 1883, Col. William Hicks gathered a larger army of nearly 10,000 men. Trapped by the tribesmen in a defile at El Obeid, it was massacred to a man. Three months later, another British-led force met disaster at El Teb.

Prime Minister William Gladstone ordered a withdrawal from Sudan, and dispatched one of Victoria's most celebrated heroes, General Charles "Chinese" Gordon, to effect the evacuation. Instead, Gordon was besieged by the Mahdi at Khartoum. In an epic contest pitting military innovation and discipline against religious fervor, the Mahdi and Gordon dueled throughout 1884, while the British government hesitated to send relief.

On January 26, 1885 a treacherous native (or patriot, depending on one's point of view) let the Mahdist forces into the city of Khartoum. Gordon, realizing that the end was at hand, donned a white uniform, took up his sword, and walked out upon his palace steps. He was hacked to death by jihadists and his head was carried around the city on a pole. A British relief column arrived two days later.

The Mahdi died shortly afterward, yet his revolt had succeeded. The British vacated the territory for almost 15 years until in 1899, led by Herbert Kitchner, they returned to forestall encroachments by other European powers. The Mahdist forces were crushed at the Battle of Omdurman, and the great jihad temporarily dissolved into the desert, not to be renewed for another century.

In today's world the Mahdi's words have been repeated almost verbatim by the Muslim jihadists who have attacked New York, Washington, Madrid and London, and continue to wage war from the Hindu Kush to the Mediterranean. Along with Saladin, who once defeated a holy war, the Mahdi stands as an Islamic icon who once launched his own successful crusade against the West.

This deeply researched work reminds us that the "clash of civilizations" that supposedly came upon us in September 2001 in fact began much earlier. This book is essential reading for all those who seek to understand the roots of our current relationship with Islam.

Before Bin Laden or Hussein there was the Mahdi, the 'Expected One' who raised the Arabs in a revolt against infidels in 19th century Sudan - and THE FIRST JIHAD: THE BATTLE FOR KHARTOUM AND THE DAWN OF MILITANT ISLAM is key to understanding not only the Mahdi, but his ongoing importance to events happening today. The Mahdi's army crushed forces dispatched from British Egypt to half his uprising, succeeded in unifying much of the Arab world, and developed early winning military strategies: THE FIRST JIHAD focuses both on these military encounters and on the biography and background of Muhammed Ahmed, whose charisma was to spark action among peoples. College-level collections strong in Middle East history and culture need this.

Shaw radically reworks Ovid's tale with a feminist twist: while Henry Higgins successfully teaches Eliza Doolittle to speak and act like a duchess, she adamantly refuses to be his creation. This brilliantly witty exposure of the British class system will always entertain-first produced in 1914, it remains one of Shaw's most popular plays.

Published as a play in 1916, 'Pygmalion' is one of Shah's play
not heavy on philosophy. I, personally feel that his plays heavy
on philosophy are his best - 'Man and Superman', 'St.
Joan', 'Androcles and the Lion' et al. Among his plays of 'not
heavy on philosophy' genre, I rate 'Pygmalion' as one of the
best. It is full of fun, gaiety, humor, Shavian wit and is a wee
bit didactic. As Shaw wrote in the preface of 'Man and
Superman', that all good, great writing should be didactic. So,
even in the mildly didactic 'Pygmalion', Shaw had more than one
axe to grind so to say.

The central theme of Pygmalion is the gift of speech in human
beings. Shaw has tried to depict as to how a person speaks
affects their own personality and the people around. As a
corollary to this theme, Shaw hoped to popularize the science of
phonetics. In the short preface of the play, Shaw also makes a
plea for enhancement of the English alphabet (with it's too few
vowels and few consonants) to make English reading pronunciation
rational. Both his wishes of popularizing phonetics and getting
the English alphabet enlarged remain unfulfilled even today,
perhaps a measure of how much ahead of the times he was or still
                        is!

The locale is London's Covent Garden vegetable market. The time
is late night. It is pouring heavily, everybody is seeking the
shelter of a church's portico. Among the shelter seekers is an
impoverished, bedraggled flower girl Liza with a terrible
cockney accent. Liza is trying to peddle her flowers to the
crowd of shelter seekers. A middle-aged gentleman, professor
Higgins is taking down her speech (in Bells Visible Speech) in
his notebook. Professor Higgins is an eccentric phonetician,
expert on London accents and can place a person by their accent
to the street they originate from. One other shelter seeker is
an ex-military man, Colonel Pickering (also middle aged) with a
deep interest in phonetics. As professor Higgins Colonel
Pickering get talking, Higgins bemoans the terrible accent of
Liza (most depressing and disgusting sounds) and boasts that if
given a chance to teach and train her to speak for three months,
he could pass her off as a duchess on the basis of her fine way
of speaking! It comes about that Colonel Pickering is willing to
bear the expense of teaching Liza to speak by Higgins. The rest
of the play is about Liza 'the live doll' learning to speak like
a Duchess from two confirmed bachelors Higgins and Pickering and
whether they are able to pass her off as a duchess.

The woman protagonist character of the play Liza like all Shaw's
woman protagonist character is strong willed and assertive.
Having to endure during her learning the overbearing ways,
domineering mien, downright bullying from a socially superior
Higgins her teacher, she manages to hold her own. In the latter
stages of the play, she even manages to get the better of him
and Higgins has to tamely acknowledge that he has made a 'woman'
of her after all. (a lame defence) Although there is a romantic
angle, (Liza and Freddy) the relationship between Liza vis-à-vis
Higgins and Pickering are pivotal, focal relationships of the
play. The Liza, Freddy romance is a relegated affair. I feel
only Shaw could do this i.e. make a non-romantic relationship so
interesting over the other. But then Shaw loved debunking
popular notions. All in all a much readable play.

4 out of 5 stars A clever and amusing play.......2004-07-24

This one-day read was amusing and clever. The witty banter and characterization of Eliza Doolittle the 'guttersnipe' and Henry Higgins the restless Phonetics teacher, sets the tone of the play, and the humour maintains itself. This was my introduction to the work of George Bernard Shaw, and on the back of this one I'm ready to dip right into another of his works. 'Pygmalion' is a quintessential 19th century text, as it deals with the sensibilities of the day, especially Victorian prudery. Henry Higgins has a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering, that he can pass this "squashed cabbage leaf" (Miss Doolittle) off as a duchess in 6 months. Decked out in finery and with her new, deliberate and well-mannered tongue, Eliza debuts at a London reception, rendering everyone awe-struck by her startling beauty and refinement. Higgins laps up the success of his protege, gloating and dismissing the possibility that it was Eliza's quick learning that made him win the bet. Higgin's godlike power over Eliza underlines book's sexist subtext. Eliza is abused and bullied by her professor, remaining the object of his ridicule, irrespective of her new-found station in life. The ending of this book surprised me, and Shaw interrupts the play format to conclude it in prose. I found 'Pygmalion' enjoyable, and would recommend it to those seeking insight into 19th century ways of thinking, or simply those seeking a hearty and amusing read. Note: this is the DEFINITIVE TEXT version of the play.
