Art and Ecology.......2006-07-23
Suzi Gablik's Conversations Before the End of Time is a collection of interviews with artists and others about the human caused ecological crisis currently taking place on this planet and in particular the reaction in the art and intellectual world to this crisis. It is not easy to talk about this subject, and some may find this book disturbing for that reason. Contemplating our own individual mortality is difficult enough, and that is done in a cultural context that supports the process and imbues it with meaning. A good deal of the meaning in personal mortality comes from the fact that there will be posterity. The End of Time postulated in Gablik's book is unthinkable because it precludes this meaning. The format of the book and Gablik's choice of subjects for her interviews carry out the purpose of the book beautifully. I found the interview with Christopher Manes on Homo-centrism of art to be particularly enlightening. How can we appreciate the magnitude of our destructive actions if all we talk about is ourselves?
Dark Arts.......2005-04-19
This book confirms an observation of mine; that contemporary art is the expression of a politically liberal world view, deeply pessimistic about humanity, and driven by an unwitting self-loathing. I'm sorry she and her friends see things this way. Much of our world is created by the way we view it. This Gablik creation is dark indeed. I would have much greater sympathy if it wasn't so self-inflicted. The world is what you make it.
Challenges "tight" artworld; criticism of Western lifestyles.......2002-03-22
I found her choices of who she interviewed to well-round her theme (Leo Castelli, The Guerrilla Girls, those who study human behavior, environmentalists, etc.) Leo Catelli developed his fame with avant-garde artists. Artists which could be labeled as aesthetic artists. Castelli discusses the 1993 Whitney Biennial as a change of guard between aesthetic art and a more social art. Sure there are gray areas. What is avant-garde today? Does it exist today? Are we borrowing from those before us more than ever?
In this book, thoughtful people explore questions that the comfortable and apathetic will not. Questions about squeezing everything out of everything.....art, the environment, community.... She brings out how most art is for only a select and priviledged few due to the way Western Cilvilization exists now.
Some of the views might seem a bit extreme, but after all, it is the extremists on both sides who shape the future. Suzi Gablik interjects that the strongest(industrial/polluting/rich) extremists might be winning today. I think this book suggests that some artists are saying we should care about each other by connecting more closely to each other and the resources we live with.
Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian, the Bauhaus school and many other thinkers stated these similar things some 90 years ago.
This book restates this modified theme today. This is a very important book.
A promising collection of art dialogues disappoints...
.......1998-04-01
Suzi Gablik promises a thoughtful collection of discussions with various artists and critics regarding the relationship of art with life and spirituality. Unfortunately, in each section (the book is written in dialogue form) she directs the conversation towards her own personal extreme apocolyptic environmental worldview.
In those dialogues where the participant agrees with her viewpoint, they happily conclude that a highly politicized, non-traditional art world is the desired aim. But in those conversations where the participant doesn't happen to see the Earth on the verge of environmental breakdown, the conversation seems to break down. Gablik seems so entrenched within this worldview that she is unable to understand other views.
In one instance, a critic used as an example the changes that we have undergone in the development from a society of hunter-gatherers to our present modern society. He made the seemingly obvious point that today our immediate survival is not as at risk now as it was when each day's food depended on that day's hunt.
Gablik seemed shocked that he did not see the Earth on the verge of an environmental apocalypse, meaning that she feels that our immediate survival is very much at risk.
This is not even a the classic liberal versus conservative argument regarding the role of art and aesthetics. That dialogue would have been productive. Rather, the author consistantly focuses on her own personal biases, leading to disappointing results.

What's all the hype about ?.......2007-07-20
So ... I buy this book , because I am 22 , and finishing college and I see it on line . Mistake , mistake , mistake , a waste of $9 , I should just have borrowed it from the library . He repeats himself , and all it is is cute quips about getting laid and working . It's something that is not a breath of fresh air , but a breath of stale air . It's not informative , its mostly a book about drunken gatherings . I personally found it bery boring and I am wondering if I can return it ... or regift it , but that might seem tacky .
Suuch a great book :).......2007-06-27
BY FAR, one of the funniest books I have ever read. It is clever, witty and gives every twenty-something out there a sigh of relief that you're not the only one out there thinking what Karo is writing. The little jokes and thoughts about life after college are soo fun to read. My favorite parts include the one when he talks about how you haven't lived until youve drunkenly left your cell in a cab on a sat. night. which leads to then calling it a zillion times, paying the cabbie way too much for bringing it back to you, only to hear 3,000 drunk, pathetic voicemails from yourself - haha... It's like I know exactly what he means, but he can just word it sooo much better and soo much funnier -
i loved it and cant wait for the next book from him :)
Spot-On Hilarious account of 20s life in NYC.......2007-01-09
Having lived in NYC for several years after graduating college, literally every single thing Karo talked about in this totally on-point book had happened to me. I felt like I was reading the clever, hilarious version of my life, except from the perspective of a female. Actually, is it weird that a lot of my stories were exactly the same, even though I am a girl???
Great gift for friends who did the same song and dance (that you wouldn't change a minute of) as you.
The only review that matters..........2006-03-03
This book is one of these easy reads...quick page turners....will have u laughing out loud..as it did me....Aaron Karo def. hit the nail on the head in his tellings of what typical life is like in your twenties. Loved the book, a "gourmet" reading....I reccomend it to all!
I agree!!! .......2005-12-03
I agree with the review below, this is one of the funniest columns for twenty-somethings I have ever seen!!! For the most part its right off his column, but I can read it again, its that good. I think it takes a true twenty-something to really enjoy this book because most of the written humor out there is not geared to this audience.
Well done Karo!!!

If you're not laughing, you never got it........2007-06-29
Karo is tackles the ridiculousness of the undergraduate experience dead on in Ruminations on College Life. He allows you to look back at your four year, or look forward to, with the kind of hindsight that finds humor in just about everything that occurs.
Not everything covered will apply to everyone, as everyone's undergraduate experience is different, but you appreciate all elements of the book.
For those who enjoy the book, Karo puts out a online/email column that tackles his monthly 'ruminations', which is always worth checking out.
A Fun Little Voyage.......2006-02-20
Wow...look at all those other reviews. Those people are seriously deluded about the nature of this book.
People, let me be straight with you. I attend school at the University of Pennsylvania. Or, as we call it, Penn. Yes, it is the "Social Ivy". No, we don't JUST binge drink (although it does happen).
If you want proof that this guy went to class, look at the fact that he actually graduated. From Wharton. The best business school in the nation. Then, he published a book about it. Calm down.
This is a fun little book. It is entertaining, it makes light of a lot of college problems, and no one who has been in college in the past decade or so is going to find it that offensive. It's entertainment, nothing more.
It doesn't purport to be a survival guide for college, and it wasn't intended to be. Instead, it was intended to be what it is. An amusing series of anecdotes about drinking at Penn. It also teaches an important lesson. Which is that Penn is no different from other college campuses.
Take it for what it is, people. Don't get all preachy.
I recommend it. It's entertaining. Pick it up. Then pass it on. I am.

Meh. This isn't that great........2005-10-18
I admire this kid for having enough business sense to get this little book published. No doubt he probably has wealthy, powerful parents. But the material itself is not that original or dare I say ... funny. This may fare well with an audience whose tastes are minimal but for those of us in the industry Karo's writing comes off lacking.
very good.......2005-03-05
Very true stories about college life, my only complaint is that the book is too short. I found myself hi-liteing(sp) quotes in this book to share with friends later when I was supposed to be hi-liteing "real" books for classes. Can't wait for "Twenty-something life" as I am the same age as the author. This book shows us that the college experience is pretty much the same everywhere, I had similar good times at Eastern Michigan University from 97-01. Wish Karo would come to the Ann Arbor area on his comedy tour!
Aaron Karo: Alcoholic.......2004-06-07
Meet Aaron Karo: Recovering Alcoholic. Honestly, that should have been the title of this book. Nearly 75% of this book is dedicated to stories of binge drinking, hedonism, and more binge drinking.
To be fair, some of the stories Mr. Karo presents are quite humorous and moreso belong in the screenplay to an Animal House or Van Wilder knock-off rather than a book given to upcoming college freshmen. This book is NOT:
a) a college survival manual
b) a good resource of advice
c) a cult classic.
Aaron Karo often spouts lines such as,"...when you're in college, those are your prime drinking years" or "I once drank so many Jack and Cokes, and got so absurdly wasted and sick...". My personal favorite,"My mom's response to every problem is always 'You drink too much'" -- sounds like an alcoholic to me. Mr. Karo might want to inquire as to whether or not the Betty Ford Clinic has a spare bed.
College is expensive. Wasting four years of college is akin to wasting nearly $100k (depending on the school enrolled.) Mr. Karo extols the virtues of not attending class:
"It's gotten to the point where you're probably better off skipping all your classes and catching up on your sleep instead. And I love it when the professor hands out all the notes and slides for the class on the first day. Are you kidding me? At that point,I usually raise my hand and ask when the midterm is, because I know that's the next time I am showing up."
Mr. Karo - if you are not going to go to class, why bother going to college? If any of my kids took your advice I doubt they would be the productive professionals they are today. After reading your book, I declined to give it as a graduation present to my grandchildren.
Parents - don't waste your time with Aaron Karo's smarmy, hedonistic, prose. Instead buy your kids, grandkids, etc a book where they might obtain useful advice and aspire to achieve academic success:
Been There, Should've Done That II : More Tips for Making the Most of College (ISBN: 0965608611) Fantastic advice!
Confessions of a College Freshman: A Survival Guide for Dorm Life, Biology Lab, the Cafeteria, and Other First-Year Adventures
(ISBN: 1589196600) Heartfelt advice.
College 101 : The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read
(ISBN: 0966412206) Tells you what the other books didn't cover in a provactive, tongue-in-cheek style.
Bottom line, unless your are looking for a National Lampoon tome on college life, avoid Ruminations On College Life.

The Grove Book of Operas
ASIN: 0195221869 |
Amazon.com
Although not for every opera lover (or every opera lover's budget), this massive four-volume set--each volume coming in at around 1,300 pages--is indispensable for the opera educator, writer, or major fanatic. While in any encyclopedia the quality of writing and the critical viewpoint must of necessity be somewhat varied, the standards in the Grove series of reference works are always high and the level of usefulness enormous. Almost any opera that debuted before 1992 is to be found within these pages, making it especially useful in this age of obscure revivals; most singers of any note who had established careers before that date are also included. Although somewhat Anglocentric in its inclusions, this remains an invaluable reference work.
Book Description
Incorporating a decade of musicological research, the Dictionary is unsurpassed in its scope and quality, with contributions from over 1,300 of the world's leading critics and scholars. A remarkable 11,000 articles, all fully cross-referenced, create a work that has become established as the essential opera reference. Indeed, every aspect of this varied art form is covered: composers, conductors, directors, performers, librettists, literary sources, cities and countries, operatic historians, and opera genres and terminology. BLOver 1800 operas are discussed from the late 16th century Florentine Camerata, through the great 18th and 19th century operas, to contemporary works such as the minimalist theatre pieces of Philip Glass BLThe lives and careers of over 2900 composers are discussed in depth, with entries containing critical assessments as well as discussion of their individual careers and major achievements BLProfiles of every singer who has made a significant contribution to opera are included, from Francesco Rasi in the 1600s to Luciano Pavarotti in the 1990s BLTwo unrivaled indices of character names and arias make it the most useful and user-friendly opera dictionary available BLIllustrated throughout with rare photographs, reproductions of original posters, set and costume designs, and scenes from recent performances
Customer Reviews:
From the realm of academe.......2000-12-06
The short & sweet of it: this four-volume set is the most comprehensive collection of information about composers, librettists, major singers, and of course, *operas* I have ever encountered. Not for the faint of heart or the casual fan. Within, you will find such goodies as: historical information (place/date of debut, librettist, commissioned by..., compositional style/process, reaction of the public, etc.), role names + voice part, historical photographs, extensive plot summaries, musical examples, orchestration, and a musicological commentary on the opera, most often in the context of the composer's larger body of works. But the best is yet to come, my friends - each entry includes a comprehensive bibliographical listing of major studies done on each opera, composer, singer, or librettist. A great place to start when researching a role, studying for a test, or preparing for a paper.
The only weakness in this volume is that one only reads of aria titles. If you are looking for an aria to sing, or in-depth information on a particular aria, you may not find a lot of reference to it here. But, the book will provide much context for your study, and this volume will point you toward a plethora of valuable resources regarding your aria.
Who should own this book: the scholar, the enthusiast, and the serious performer.
I need to ask a queston.........1999-03-30

Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2007-07-06
This guy is a no-talent hack who got lucky. He only marginally understands the math and strategy behind blackjack tournaments. This book was an attempt to take financial advantage of his winning the WSOBJ and I'm sorry to say I bought it. Complete waste of money. Only worthwhile book on blackjack tournaments is Wong's Casino Tournament Strategies and unfortunately it is slightly outdated, but still very worth it. Einiger is really an idiot, this book is terrible. Just a bunch of personal stories that are not very interesting.
Interesting!.......2006-06-14
I watched the WSBJ and saw Ken win. I didn't find this to be an in-depth strategy book, but Ken doesn't claim it to be. I did, however, find his play-by-play commentary of the last few hands in each round very interesting. I enjoyed reading about his thought process and learning that even World Champions sometimes make mistakes!
Book Description
In stark contrast to the reports on the nightly news and in the daily papers, Censored 2000 reveals what is being kept from the public by a lower quality of reporting, the downsizing of newsrooms, and the media conglomerates. Ralph Nader calls it a book "that should be affixed to the bulletin boards in every newsroom across the country," and the American Journalism Review has hailed the series as "a distant early warning system for society's problems." Along with the top 25 stories, Censored 2000 focuses on the struggle to bring untold news to light, including an introduction by imprisoned journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Customer Reviews:
Assassination is the ultimate form of censorship.......2005-03-13
Apart from its historical interest, this book should be read for its excellent 'Eclectic Chronology of Censorship from 605 B.C. to 1995'.
The list starts with Jehoiakim, king of Judah, who burns Jeremiah's prophesies which he had ordered himself! It goes over the Zapruder film (still censored) to the Telecommunications Deregulation Bill (TDB) of 1995.
It is a long list of interventions by the moral establishment, against women (e.g. birth control), nudity or Darwinism, and for the protection of its own socio-economic interests.
As the book states: 'Censorship is a tool of a powerful elite which attempts to control society through the manipulation of thought, speech and all other forms of expression.'
The TDB opened the way for mega-mediamonopolies, for which 'maximizing profits and broadcasting junk food news' stand for information of the public.
The first phrase of Fred Friendly's book 'Due to Circumstances Beyond our Control': 'What the American people don't know can kill them' is still shocking but all too real.
This book contains an excellent index and is a must read for all democrats.
And the Winner Is!.......2002-10-17
. . . and the No. 1 censored story of 2000 is that liberal ideologues got suckered into believing Mumia Abu Jamal is innocent!
Read these books--get instantly depressed!.......2002-08-01
August 1, 2002
These "Censored News" books are a quick, easy way
to figure out some of the "big picture" stuff real
easy, but it doesn't make for reassuring reading.
Some crimes are so huge they can hardly be taken in
from street level. Like trying to figure out what
a skyscraper looks like with your nose pressed
against the foundation stone.
Also valuable are the resources and links listed
within the book.
Beware though: follow too many links on the Internet
and you'll end up on sites run by people who think
the next hundred years have already been scripted by
a secret cabal of Satan-worshipping corporate mages.
The truth is more disturbing. Bread and circuses
simply sell better.
Brain Food to Fight the Pablum of the Evening News.......2001-08-09
I've read several of these annual Project Censored books, and each time I have become more and more disillusioned with the weaknesses of the mainstream news media. The ever-growing corporate control of the network/cable news and newspapers has encouraged several reviewers of this book to cite conspiracy theories and yell out cheesy, predictable slogans like "take the power back!" and assume it's the end of the world. I won't go that far, but the fact that a shrinking number of corporations control a large percentage of the mainstream media, as amply illustrated in this book, is indeed a disturbing trend. I now believe very little of what I see on the TV news, without taking it with a very large grain of salt. The fact that many of the top 25 "censored" stories in this book are based on coverups of corporate lawbreaking or unethical behavior is very telling. The mainstream news has become a vehicle for corporate profits, and any journalistic scoops that could possibly threaten these profits are impossible to find on the TV news.
Some good features of this book are the intros by Walter Cronkite and Mumia Abu-Jamal, and the use of one of my favorite comic strips, "This Modern World" by Tom Tomorrow. Some of the essays by various media watchdogs and analysts are fascinating as well. But this book does have some drawbacks though, including a repetitive condemnation of the mainstream news organizations (you can say it a few times, but a million times is tedious), and there's an annoyingly long write-up of a corporate-backed police crackdown on an independent radio station in Pacifica, California. The Project Censored series overall would benefit from some more focus and less proselytizing. But it's not too hard to avoid those weaknesses and focus on the censored stories, which are mostly worth worrying about. And it's not just a leftist rant, either.
an excelent insight into the events that happen around us.......2001-02-12
this book is an excelent, well researched, well written insight into the events that one would never learn of from any other source.its comics by tom tomorrow are also very intreguiging. i woulkd reccomend this to anyone who want to discover the truth in todays media-driven soceity.
Book Description
Censorship is alive and well in America and resisted every spring with the annual publication of the previous year's top 25 censored stories. Mainstream media's downward-spiraling standards have made Censored books a crucial tool for keeping the American public educated and informed. This year's edition includes Ed Herman on liberals betraying their values in U.S. foreign policy, Michel Chossudovsky on propaganda, and Robin Andersen on the independent media movement. Also featured is News Abuse, a survey of the most overcovered and least newsworthy stories that clogged the airwaves.

missing the mainstream of interests.......2002-04-27
I have been picking up these books for the last eight years. It is amazing what the mainstream media considers news and what they miss and ignore as news, thus they are missing the mainstream of interests of the American public or what should be the interests of the public. Instead, the mainstream goes after fluff and disasters news that is inoffensive to the corporate/business interest of this nation and does not reflect reality of public interest. If CENSORED ever published a nation-wide newspaper, along the lines of USA Today, I would subcribe to it, for relevant, news without spin and news with meaning to the mainstream public.
The importance of alternative news outlets.......2001-11-13
This book is more important now than ever. As we sit with our eyes glued to the coverage of the "War" in Afghanistan, it is crucial that we observe the mainstream media with the awareness of how many years they have manipulated, lied, and deceived the American people. We cannot have a true democracy, we cannot make informed choices, we cannot live authentic lives when so much crucial information is kept from us because we don't, for whatever reason, "deserve" to know. Now, more than ever, it's important to realize the importance of alternative news outlets, and the most important part of this book is that it lists them -- all of them -- so you can find them all. Don't limit yourself to the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, The Enquirer, and ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN. There's a whole world out there that so far has not entirely been kept from us -- but you have to work to access it. It's well worth the effort, and the rest of us out here digging stuff up could really use your help! Welcome aboard!
A very complicated hodge podge..........2001-09-20
This one is really hard to review. Kind of like trying to write a review of a newspaper combined with a news magazine combined with some essays combined with a rulebook... And it doesn't really fit clearly into any of those categories. Many of the articles were written in the style of newspaper articles, though with longer term perspectives. Others were clearly more like you'd see in a magazine, except for the lack of illustrations. The essays wandered through various venues and styles, but I'm not even sure where to fit things there. There was a very interesting interview with Walter Cronkite, but what category was it? The 'rulebook' part was spread through several sections, describing the mechanics of preparing the book, but including some comments from judges.
The content was quite interesting, actually. Lots of stories that you'd think would be worth coverage in the main newspapers, but which were ignored. Something of interest to almost everyone. The reasons the stories were ignored are mostly pretty obvious. Some are just negative stories, but in other cases apparently just not interesting enough to compete with the 'junk food news' that draws the ratings... Not so much active censorship as selective filtering.
Actually, I had a pretty profound reaction to this book. The news is NOT 'free'--someone is paying for it. The obvious conclusion is that advertising-funded 'free' news is a very bad thing. Advertising is fundamentally NOT about facts and reason. Effective advertising is about creating irrational needs, and though this was only tangentially discussed in the book, it becomes quite obvious when you think about it. That lack of focus on the bigger problems and some production glitches are the main reasons the book couldn't earn that tough fifth star.
Great introduction.......2001-07-31
If you're new to this kind of stuff, this book would definitely serve as a great introduction.

"Thankfully, I'm writing this review on Amazon.com the proud brave bastion of reviewing freedom. They offer us the ability to rate porn videos, books on fisting, pleasure manuals, and so much more."
Provided you abide by the guidelines, of course. And they can strip the reviews from you at a moment.
The book's quite good, too.

Book Description
A unique and definitive study of freedom of expression rights in electronic media from the 1920s through the mid-1930s, Louise M. Benjamin’s Freedom of the Air and the Public Interest: First Amendment Rights in Broadcasting to 1935 examines the evolution of free speech rights in early radio.
Drawing on primary resources from sixteen archives plus contemporary secondary sources, Benjamin analyzes interactions among the players involved and argues that First Amendment rights in radio evolved in the 1920s and 1930s through the interaction of many entities having social, political, or economic interests in radio. She shows how free speech and First Amendment rights were defined and perceived up to 1935.
Focusing on the evolution of various electronic media rights, Benjamin looks at censorship, speakers’ rights of access to the medium, broadcasters’ rights to use radio as they desired, and listeners’ rights to receive information via the airwaves. With many interested parties involved, conflict was inevitable, resulting in the establishment of industry policies and government legislation—particularly the Radio Act of 1927. Further debate led to the Communications Act of 1934, which has provided the regulatory framework for broadcasting for over sixty years. Controversies caused by new technology today continue to rage over virtually the same rights and issues that Benjamin deals with.
