Essential Reading for Modernists.......2000-10-01
Anyone interested in Modernist aesthetics will want to have this book. Ortega y Gasset,as he does in all his books and essays, captures the historical progression of ideas better than anyone else of his generation. Whether your interested in Modernist art or poetry(European or American), this book will help to elucidate important intellectual currents and better able you to challenge and explore many of the underlying philosophical and aesthetic constructs that influenced Ortega y Gasset's "generation[s]"
Art critique as art.......2000-04-08
Ortega y Gasset was not just another philosopher. He's a thinker that raised philosophy to the level of art. As such, his analysis of art is a work of art by itself. His insights into aesthetics are overwhelming and inexhaustable. This book is not just a book about art; it's a vast meditation on modern human condition. Before one reads any art criticism one should read this one so that one will taste the truth of the art. Ortega y Gasset writing reminds us that contemporary art critic is so dull and out of touch with its subject. After reading Ortega's book one would have difficulties reading any other art critique.

Book Description
You think your job is bad? Try being a Sherpa, a Saddam Hussein Double (now unemployed), or the person who operates the "It's a Small World" ride. Satirist Justin Racz has spanned the globe to find fifty jobs worse than yours, so we can all feel better about our own. Fully illustrated, featuring color photos of the undesirable and unfathomable, Fifty Jobs Worse Than Yours is guaranteed to make you grateful for the job you have and thankful for the one you don't.
Customer Reviews:
Very funny and well-researched!.......2007-09-18
After reading this hilarious book, I thanked my lucky stars for even those jobs that I had considered the worst jobs in history.
I love this book because of the actual details of these awful positions, including pay, required skills, "benefits," and drawbacks!
I purchased this book as a birthday gift for my friend's son who actually beleives that he will rule the world without a high school diploma. Forewarned is forearmed!
Fun gift.......2007-05-03
This is a really fun little book with catchy photos and a humorous approach to life's less glorious experiences in the working world. It'll give you a better perspective on your own job, too-- I keep it on my bookshelf at the office. Another similar book just came out-- "Odd Jobs: 101 Ways to Make an Extra Buck." It includes many of the same details for all sorts of jobs (the good, the bad, and the really bizarre). Either book, or both together, makes a great graduation gift.
50 worse books than this..........2007-01-30
But it's a cute office book. The pictures are nice and the writing is comical.
I bought this for my fiance' because he always complains about his job! He thought it was funny. Now, I think it's tossed on the floor somewhere in his office.
For the price, good book if you need a small office gift.
A kick in the pants!.......2007-01-17
I recommend the entire Justin Racz collection. They make great gifts... "50 Jobs Worse Than Yours" is especially good for a friend or co-worker with a case of "The Mondays"...
Not worth the time or money.......2006-08-01
This is something I would find on a humor website. And it's not very good. Most of the jobs listed is only held by a few people and not what I call real jobs. There is a show on The Discovery Channel that is titled "Dirty Jobs". One job that Racz mentions was featured on it. Chicken sexer. And what the job is about is quickly finding out what sex the baby chicks are. But he mentions silly stuff mostly like Saddam Hussein Double and Exorcist. A few real ones like Data Entry and Shopping Cart Valet.
I got this book from the library by placing it on hold. If I saw the inside of this book I wouldn't have bothered with it.
Book Description
Over four decades, Clint Eastwood has become a Hollywood legend, with his success on both sides of the camera assuring him a place in cinema history. Born the son of a steel worker in 1930, Eastwood’s drive for success led him to his first break, in 1959, on the TV series Rawhide. Eastwood broke from television in 1964 with A Fistful of Dollars—his steely gaze and strong, silent screen presence made the film a surprise box-office smash. In 1971, his performance in Dirty Harry cemented his reputation as an electrifying talent, and he has since gone on to star in and direct some of the most memorable films in Hollywood history. Now, drawing on exclusive interviews with the star, Douglas Thompson gives us a definitive portrait.

Nostalgic look at old Florida and what has been lost........2007-06-27
As a native Floridian, I have bemoaned the loss of the state I remember. Shopping malls and amusement parks have replaced much of what I think of as Florida. This book speaks to these feelings and should be read by anyone concerned about the rampant growth of our society which seems bent on destroying any sense of the past. At least we can glimpse what was once there through this well written and heartfelt book.
Not a blade of grass left........2006-09-21
My grandma says "there won't be a blade of grass left." Belleville explains why. A personal story of man who finds the true Florida, a people who scratched out a living in the early days and survived many hurricanes, only to be swept away today by developers. Highly recommended reading for anyone who is fighting urban sprawl.
Offers Floridians and others hope for appreciating nature.......2006-06-21
Bill Belleville is a documentary filmmaker and author specializing in conservation: how work has appeared extensively in magazines, has been anthologized in collections, and he's written many books, but LOSING IT ALL TO SPRAWL: HOW PROGRESS ATE MY CRACKER LANDSCAPE hits closer to home than many of his other books. Bill Belleville writes of his historic Cracker farmhouse and old neighborhood of central Florida even as it's being wiped out: any who have visited the area in the last few years will readily acknowledge the truths and observations in LOSING IT ALL TO SPRAWL. In addition to documenting the underlying social, political and economic forces at work in promoting sprawl, Belleville offers Floridians and others hope for appreciating nature.

What price, progress?.......2006-03-31
Fifteen years the author lived in a 'cracker' house at the end of a dirt road and shared the solitude enjoyed by former occupants for more than seventy years. It was a perfect hide-away for a freelance environmental writer and film maker, where privacy was respected, where nature was sufficient unto itself and its creatures, and where the only compromises with modernity were indoor plumbing and electricity. Even the window unit air conditioner was redundant in a house designed in simpler times, well shaded and with natural cross ventilation.
One day the shrill back-up signal of earth-moving equipment shattered the tranquility, a nails-on-blackboard, unsettling sound that forewarned of loss of innocence to come. A new mega-mall is planned nearby, and already the landscape is denuded and sculpted to accommodate the thousands of cars, SUV's and service vehicles that would respond. "If you build it, they will come." (With apologies to W. P. Kinsella.)
Bill Belleville is an award-winning writer, the author of River of Lakes, A Journey on Florida's St. Johns River, Deep Cuba and Sunken Cities, Sacred Cenotes and Golden Sharks. His film making credits include an Emmy award for Wekiva: Legacy or Loss.
It was Belleville's cracker house and his story, and the story of those who lived there before. But in a larger sense it is my story and yours, all of us who have witnessed the sacrifice of the playgrounds of childhood and the sanctuaries of memory at the altar of 'progress.' But we don't have to write it. Bill Belleville has done it for us with the same beauty and poignancy that marked his earlier works, but this time with righteous anger born of loss.
A wonderful, compelling, intensely personal book that reminds the rest of us of what we, too, have lost, and leaves us asking "What price, progress?"

From the supplier: Three bakeries which solved warehouse and materials handling problems with automation upgrades are profiled. The Keebler Co consolidated operations in Denver, CO, by constructing a high-rise warehouse next to its distribution center and installed a high-performance automated storage/retrieval system. Archway Cookies Inc met increased sales volumes by adding on an upper-level automated flow storage system which uses rear loading to move the oldest goods out first. Mrs. Baird's Bakeries Inc replaced an old bread plant in Fort Worth, TX, with a state-of-the-art automated facility, which includes a highly accurate dry handling system for minor ingredients.

This is the first and only humor book about the No. 1 complaint of pregnancy. Better than a "get well" card any day!
Customer Reviews:
Helpful AM, PM or in between!.......2000-08-08
Being sick is the WORST thing about being pregnant..it's certainly not very funny. The cartoons in this book really hit the nail on the head! Even if you are too sick to read, flip a page and you'll see your situation illustrated. Brilliant work. Every OB should be recommending this book from office visit #1..as well as very receptionist who answers the phone from a woman who is despite for an early appointment!
FULL OF PRACTICAL, TRULY HELPFUL ADVICE.......1999-01-19
IT IS RARE TO FIND SOMEONE WITH SUCH REMARKABLE INSIGHT INTO THE PLIGHT OF THE PREGNANT WOMAN WHO SUFFERS TERRIBLY FROM "MORNING SICKNESS". THE BOOK IS EASY TO READ AT A TIME WHEN ONE FINDS IT DIFFICULT TO CONCENTRATE. THE ILLUSTRATIONS HELPED ME FIND THE HUMOR IN A TOPIC I USUALLY DO NOT FIND VERY FUNNY. THE BOOK IS FULL OF SIMPLE YET USEFUL ADVICE. EVEN AFTER ALL THE HELPFUL HINTS I RECEIVED FROM FRIENDS AND RELATIVES, I STILL FOUND A PLENITUDE OF NEW ADVICE IN THIS WONDERFUL BOOK.
