What would ever possess someone to hang onto passed school notes from 1976?? Perhaps there's a part of all of us that wishes we saved our notes as well. This is a short, sweet and oddly engaging little book and one of my recent favorites. Consider it a kind of noble literature. Highly recommended!

If you have ever passed a note in you life to anyone else, you do not need to read this book. No story line, nothing really that funny or remotely original. Just some notes from some kids to other kids about who they like that day. Very boring.

I bought this book for my friend's daughter who turned 12. I saw this book get passed around and saw the girls reading page after page very intently. Curiosity got the best of me so I asked if I could read the book. Wow! It was flashback of my teen-age years when friends and I used to pass notes to one another. The notebooks's contents were hush-hush letters about crushes and puppy love. Its a great gift for a teen to let them know that we have all been there.

I couldn't put it down till I had finished the whole thing, then I went back and read it again. It is just a slender collection of notes passed to and from the author during junior high school, but it packs an emotional wallop that you just don't expect -- and it's funny. The notes awaken memories of your own first loves and deepest friendships, a time when you were most vulnerable and most seriously attracted "in that way" to someone (and then someone else, and then someone else). You'll suddenly remember the exact names and faces and voices of the people you loved, befriended, envied and desired when you were 12 or 13 years old. You may find yourself reading it out loud to friends, and then they'll want to grab it and read it without stopping. If you survived junior high school, or are living with someone who's there now, you'll enjoy this.

What a Difference a Day Makes.......2006-05-15
Just having a listing of the episodes of DORIS DAY'S BEST FRIENDS, the animel-centered series she produced and appeared in back in the 1980s, would be reason enough to purchase this enchantingly obsessed volume. But there are plenty more. I enjoyed seeing McGee scampering through the gardens and byways of Day's multifaceted movie career, mysteriously cut short after the release of THE BALLAD OF JOSIE and WITH SIX YOU GET EGG ROLL. He even has a section detailing the films Day might have made but alas, or in some cases thank God, she wound up not playing in. I never really wanted to see her playing in THE GRADUATE, but some of the other roles offered her she really should have said yes to. Of course there were many other complications in Day's life, and to his credit McGee takes them all on. She had bad luck in husbands, and despite an eternal, and very American optimism, the sunny side of Doris Day we are initially drawn to, there's a darker, sadder, even more melancholy side to her persona as well that's a little harder to access. Thus her appearance at Rock's side in his episode of BEST FRIENDS revealed her in a new avatar, the brave stalwart supporter, nearly an angel, in the time of AIDS, avowing a sexual knowledge she had played with and played behind since the days of ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS.
McGee is also extremely thorough on Day's recording career, a subject on which I was never very well briefed, and now I think I could hold my own end up in any charity competition for knowing how many of Rodgers and Hart's songs Day recorded (plenty, compared to the very few of, say, Cole Porter's) if that was one of the test questions. McGee loves Doris Day, that is for sure, and yet he is surprisingly objective about her talents, judging this or that as a failure or success in its own terms. I never realized, for example, what a mistake JUMBO seems to have been for Doris; its failure, McGee states, precluded Fox from giving her the Maria Von Trapp psrt in the Robert Wise film of SOUND OF MUSIC.
Excellent Reference Book on Day.......2005-02-22
Not simply a biography, but a reference book of Doris' life and her career on records, radio, film and television. This was a much needed book, and is very nicely done. Succinct, thorough and with some nicely rare pictures, although I noticed at least one photo caption which incorrectly identified the year, but that is a small quibble.

This is the first new English translation of Berlioz's complete text since 1856, and it is accompanied throughout by Hugh Macdonald's extensive and authoritative commentary on the instruments of Berlioz's time and on his own orchestral practice, as revealed in his scores. It also includes extracts from Berlioz's writings on instruments in his Memoirs and in his many articles for the Parisian press. The Treatise has been highly valued both for its technical information about instruments but also for its poetic and visionary approach to the art of instrumentation. Berlioz was not only one of the great orchestrators of the nineteenth century, he was also the author with the clearest understanding of the art.

Learning from games of some of the greatest chess players.......2006-10-12
Romanian Grandmaster Marin takes from the games of eight of the world's best chess players over a large span of time and gives a solid analysis. It explains why and what is important about these players and their games. Such books (examples of others I liked: "Understanding Chess" and "Unbeatable Chess Lessons and More Unbeatable Chess Lessons") are very helpful in getting to understand important ideas and provide them from actual play. I also liked "The Chess Kings" that covers games and analysis and tells about the history of the great players. From Grandmaster Marin you get a good dose of great instruction along with some interesting background on the greats! I would have given this book five stars if it didn't have a lot of mistakes in typos where some moves couldn't be played and the position was wrong (I doubled checked to make sure it wasn't me). When the typos are cleaned up, then five stars!
The best work about world champions.......2006-01-14
This chess book is one of the kind. Most people with expirience when reading a new chess book find a lot of familiar or well known subjects and themes in it. And when u buy some world champions biography book, esentially u buy a book about one person and one style of play, with lot of similary played games in it. Lets say u buy an excellent Shirov book "Fire on board". You know more or less exactly in what direction every game would lead. And you will have a lot of inspiring tactics training in it. Or u buy great Gligoric book "I Play Against Pieces", and suddenly feel like a great strategist.
But this book, this Mihail Marin one is everything of that compiled in just one book trying to tell the most important things everyone of these eight great players learned us in chess. And it succedes in it very well indeed. Its like saying: Lets get to work, we have no pages to trash here. So Marin went to work, and hit everyone of those great masters frontally, in the head. He succesfully realised what were the best strenghts of everyone, and jumped in the right chair in every chapter.
My favorite chapter nevetheless is still the last one about Korchnoi, maybe because I like the guy and his atitude, and although author titles his chapter as Victor Korchnoi-an Universal player, to me the story tells us about fighting spirit of the great man.
I think that after reading the Petrosian chapter, I wouldnt be scared sacryficing an exchange any more, and I would be playing an opposite coloured bishop endings better and in different way after reading a Karpov chapter.
There are few small mistakes I was able to detect, mostely in analysis part, but they are not of serious nature, most of those are only tipfelers. Let me ilustrate that: on page 256 is said: "Black already threatens Rh6"; it should be sad Bh6, or on page 217 63.Ke3 move is impossible, since enemy king is on d2; or the name of Ljubomir Ljubojevic is written on page 218 as Lubomir etc. Those are really small mistakes that dont influence the overall performance of this excellent book.
I can say nothing more but absolutely recommend this title to everyone.
