Exercise for your mind!.......2000-03-31
This is great. It really does help you exercise your mind. When things are really hectic, it is great to get completly focused on the images and let everything else go. Great way to refocus your energy and give you a little pick-me-up when you're having trouble concentrating.

"s serious topics.......2007-03-09
I am a physician, so reading Dr. London's semihumorous review of how he has survived the vagaries of office practice and been an advocate for his patients has been a confirmation of some of my own prejudices. Some of his revelations, such the fact that physicians don't know everything nor diagnose every disease accurately, may come as a shock to some people. Medicine involves one imperfect human being caring for a series of similarly flawed people who happen to be sick and distressed by their illness. It's a miracle, given the variability of illness, and the tendency of patients to deviate from the "textbook" descriptions, that we save as many as we do. The book injects a needed reality into the mysterious world of office practice, which is far different from the hospital environment usually dramatized on TV.
It's a worthwhile addition to the popular medical literature; it won't tell you how to cure your ulcer or stave off a heart attack, but it will tell you what makes your doctor tick. Bravo, Dr. London!
Kill us with how terribly clever you as, Oscar........2006-10-09
I am obviously out of step with the opinions of the other readers. I am in the medical field, and this may affect how I view this book ( although I ADORED House of God). I felt like the author wrote this book so he could admire how very clever he was, like a vain person who is always checking him/herself out in the store windows when walking by. Just to smug.
World's Best Doctor.......2006-06-10
A very quick read, filled with short, humorous essays on how to become the world's best doctor (after the author, Oscar London, dies, because he currently considers himself the world's best doctor.)
This would be a great graduation present for medical students. It's all about staying down to earth, treating the patient rather than the disorder, and just being the best doctor, and person, you can be.
Rule 57: Rehearse Your Final Words.......2005-01-21
I became positive my father had written this book during Dr. Arlan Cohn's (aka Oscar London, M.D., W.B.D.) discussion of office music: "If [a doctor] wants to destroy his practice, he might consider bringing in an accordion player. (One night at a restaurant, I reached out and plunged my dinner knife into the bellows of an approaching accordion; the stricken look on the player's face when the wind was knocked out of his "Lady of Spain" was well worth the price of damages.)"
Okay, so my father is a deceased dentist and Dr. Cohn is a 70-something internist, but these men were psychic twins. This book snaps, crackles, and pops--to borrow the author's phrase when comparing chiropractors to breakfast cereal--although by the end of it, I still hadn't decided whether I'd want Dr. Cohn to be my internist. He underprescribes pain medications for fear of turning his patients and himself into junkies, but on the other hand (bless you, Dr. Cohn!) he treats gas and lower back pain. Most internists--well, their eyes glaze over if you complain about gas or lower back pain.
Incidentally, the W.B.D. after this author's name stands for "World's Best Doctor" and in this book he shares fifty-seven short essays on how you too can aspire to be a 'W.B.D.'
If laughter truly has the power to lower blood pressure, improve digestion, and help insomnia, you'll be in ruddy good health by the time you reach Dr. Cohn's "Afterword" which he subtitles "You'll Have to be the World's Best Patient to Survive Managed Care." The Afterword isn't as funny as the rest of the book, at least to those of us who have survived treatment at an HMO.
One of the author's suggestions could be helpful to anyone, physician or not, who wants to avoid long, pointless meetings. Just let the meeting organizers know that you have a mild case of Hansen's Disease.
A.k.a. leprosy.

Product Description
Revised and updated since its first publication in 1990, this acclaimed critical survey covers the classic chillers produced by Universal Studios during the Golden Age of Hollywood Horror, 1931 through 1946. Trekking boldly through haunts and horrors from The Frankenstein Monster, The Wolf Man, Count Dracula, and The Invisible Man, to The Mummy, Paula the Ape Woman, The Creeper, and The Inner Sanctum, the authors offer a definitive study of the 86 films produced during this era and present a general overview of the period. Coverage of the films includes complete cast lists, credits, storyline, behind-the-scenes information, production history, critical analysis, and commentary from the cast and crew (much of it drawn from interviews by Tom Weaver, whom USA Today calls "the king of the monster hunters"). Unique to this edition are a new selection of photographs and poster reproductions and an appendix listing additional films of interest.

THE BIBLE OF UNIVERSAL HORROR.......2007-07-07
The classic horror films of the 30's and 40's have never been as popular as they are today. Baby Boomers who grew up watching the old Shock Theater packages in the 50's and 60's hold a tremendous fondness for the films that terrified them as children. The Boris Karloff Frankenstein and Bela Lugosi Dracula are still the most recognized images of those two classic monsters...so much so that their families had to move to legally trademark their images to protect them.
The Universal horror films are the subject of Universal Horrors, the second edition of this outstanding book by noted classic film historian Tom Weaver and Michael & John Brunas. Throughout the massive 608 page hardcover, the authors cover each one of the 85 horror films made by Universal from 1931 - 1946. Just do the math...that's an average of about seven pages spent on each film during this period. This is no mere listing of actors with a one-page synopsis. Rather this is a definitive guide to these 85 films with complete cast and credits, detailed storyline synopses, production history, behind-the-scenes information, critical analysis, period reviews, and commentary by cast and crewmembers. Most of the comments come from the voluminous numbers of reviews that Weaver has conducted over the years.
The films are listed chronologically beginning with Dracula in 1931 and ending with The Brute Man in 1946. It even includes the Spanish version of Dracula which was filmed on the same set as the original at the very same time! White The Lugosi version was shot during the day, the Spanish crew took over at night. In many ways, the Spanish version outshines the Tod Browning directed original.
One of my guilty favorites of the Universal Classic film era is 1932's Murder in the Rue Morgue, presenting Lugosi in truly one of his most sadistic and macabre roles. This film ended up being the bone that both Lugosi and Director Robert Florey received for NOT getting their respective parts in Frankenstein, which instead went to Karloff and Director James Whale. This rather film features Lugosi as Dr. Mirakle, who injects the blood of an ape into women he captures. When the experiments fail, he dumps the women into a river. It's a highly underrated film and one of Lugosi's best roles.
Weaver and partners don't give a short shrift to lesser-known films. While the most popular films do get more coverage, even the least well-known of the Universal Horrors gets several pages devoted to it...and there are a number of lesser known films. Unfortunately a number of these are not on DVD or even VHS for that matter meaning that the entry in this book is probably the closest you'll get to the film without actually seeing it.
Many of these lesser-known films are not true horror but often murder mysteries with horror trappings such as "old dark house-style" films. These films include Secret of the Blue Room, Secret of the Chateau, The House of Fear, and The Black Doll. The appendix goes on to list several dozen more films that were borderline exclusions...close, but just not making the cut to receive a full write-up for various reasons. Actually it's somewhat difficult to figure out while some of these were left out of the main listing since many are quite similar in plot and tone.
This book is simply fabulous. Everything that Weaver does is always meticulously researched and extraordinarily entertaining. This is THE Bible to fans of Universal's classic horror films, and one of the finest film reference books I've ever read.

Great Book, A Little Pricey.......2003-08-03
If your 'bag' is classic horror films of the thirties and forties, especially Universal films, this book is a must-have. To many baby boomers that saw these movies when they were released for television in the fifties, this book will bring back a lot of memories. The book is great, but like all McFarland books, it is pricey. But for the true fan (which is short for fanatic) the price won't matter!

A must have for any fan of vintage horror films.......1999-08-29
An amazing source of information for anyone who ever stayed up watching the late late show on a Saturday night. I am truly impressed at the thorough research that went into this book; many factoids which have escaped even the most die-hard of fans will be brought to light. I commend McFarland Press for providing fans of such an "un-hip" genre with consistently fine sources of in-depth information, especially keeping in mind that with each passing year the facts directly from those who were there are getting more and more difficult to find. This book probably does not hold a lot of interest for anyone who does not hold a special place in their heart for the studios' genre work prior to buying the book, and the authors do tend to often drift into becoming overly opinionated and putting much too much thought into subject matter that was never intended to be overanalyzed. Nonetheless, this is still an extremely fun read for any fan.
Indispensable reference!.......1999-07-12
This book has it all for the serious student of classic horror films. Choose from a wide selection of bios, cast lists, plot summaries, anectdotes and more compiled by these mavens of the genre, Messrs. Brunas and Weaver. Thrill as they explore the nooks and crannies of the House That Universal Built. This comprehensive work is obviously the result of exhaustive hands-on research and deserves an honored spot in every true horror fan's library.

Lemmy tells it like it is.......2007-06-20
Normally I would never take the time to write an online review...I'm just lazy. This time I am compelled to strongly recommend this read! I've been a Motorhead fan since I was 15 (twenty years now) so maybe I am a bit biased but there is no way to argue that this isn't an incredibly well written and entertaining book. As others have stated in their reviews the storytelling flows like a freshly tapped keg of fine ale.
I started reading this book while dropping a duece and when finished I found that I couldn't put the book down (except to wash my hands, of course)! I read it cover to cover in one afternoon and I wished it was longer! Lemmy is a survivor and proof that not every rock star has to be an arrogant pr!ck. Highly recommended.
"The Dirt" UK style.......2006-11-03
Here's a guy who paved the way for Motley Crue's excess and debauchery. A fun read. Gives you a glimpse into UK life during the 60's and 70's sex drugs & rock & roll age. Lemmy is the messiah of speed metal and death metal. It all started with Motorhead. Without Lemmy, we wouldn't have Metallica.
Alot of fun!!!.......2006-08-21
This is as fun as a book can get. I've never found myself laughing out loud while reading a book until now. Great bio about a hilarious guy and a great band. Long live Lemmy!!!
Awesome! .......2005-11-22
Given the fact that my only exposure to Lemmy and Motorhead was the music, I didn't know what to expect from the book. And let me tell you it does not disappoint! I think Lemmy's one the most prolific (and underrated) singers / songwriters in rock, and has influenced countless bands. This man is nearing 60, and showing no signs of slowing down. The current line-up with Phil and Mickey is the strongest that Motorhead has ever had. Hats off to Lemmy. He has been through it all, and is the perfect example of drugs, sex and rock n' roll. The Rolling Stones seem like a bunch of sissies compared to Lemmy. I love the way he has chronicled his life in the book, from the places he's been to all the colourful people he has met over his long career. There are plenty of surprises in the book. However, I wish he'd mentioned more about the making of each album (and songs), and what went into it. It ends in 2002, with the release of "Hammered", so i kinda feel it's incomplete. Lots more has happened since then. I wonder if Lemmy thinks of a volume 2.
If you're a Motorhead fan, you need to buy this book, and if you're not a Motorhead fan, you need to buy this book.
The other way 'round.......2005-10-02
Well, for starters I kinda bought this book out of sheer curiosity.
I knew some of Motörhead's music and I read and saw some interviews with Lemmy (plus I figured that a guy that survives this long in the rock business OUGHT to be one of a kind...!) but I can't say I'm a Motörhead fan.
Or am I not?
After I read that funny and witty autobiography I looked at Lemmy with different eyes; he's certainly not the average person and he's got a lot more to tell that what you might think... and he also puts it down in a clever way. Maybe a bit rude, sometimes, but that's one thing I at lest expected, so to speak...
Now I thing I'm gonna check out his music with a lot more attention...!
...go figure...!

LEMMY IS GOD.......2006-01-18
Ozzy is considered a legend in metal music, but not to me. The real deal in metal is Lemmy Kilmister. This is his story, and its a highly enjoyable read. I highly agree with his take on what people say about the Ace of Spades cd and alot of other things he says is very true. Ozzy can enjoy retirement and quit making a fool of himself. The real deal is over sixty, rocking harder then you ever have, and is better then you ever will be. His name is Lemmy.
BORN TO RAISE HELL.......2005-12-21
Lemmy takes the reader on an interesting journey of his sex drugs and rock n roll lifestyle over many decades. He explores all of his excesses in life in a thoroughly entertaining and well written book. Perhaps the only disappointing thing for me was his failure to mention his friendship with German metal queen Doro Pesch, which was the main reason i purchased this book.
Overall it is a great read and highly recommended for fans.
The Best Autobiography Ever.......2004-02-02
I loved this book. Not only does it tell the reader some hilarious stories of Motorheads crazy antics, it also tells us interesting facts about the music business, history, politics and not to forget drugs, sex and rock n 'roll. Some of the stories in the book were so great I ended up calling my friends and reading exerts from it. This is a must read not only for Motorhead fans, but also for any fans of rock, or music in general.
Brilliant book through eyes of a legend.......2003-11-27
Lemmy Kilmister is a legend for the music, but also his attitude, like he said 'I dont drive a porsche', although he is a living legend. The book gives an great view of music through the 60's and 70's. The best thing about this book is how it gives you that knowledge of what was behind the music when they made it. You find out all those things from Lemmy, the rumours such as his poisinous blood.I flew through this book just wish there was more.
Too short!.......2003-08-29
Let me guess . . . the editors and bean counters put a limit on the word count? I could have easily read double the amount of pages on the life of this rock n roll legend and still wanted more.
Never a dull moment, though. I laughed out loud. I pondered Lemmy's wisdom. And, I learned a great deal about rock n roll--the art, the life, the philosophy, and the shady businessmen out there who exploit it.
I flew thru this book. It's hard not to admire someone like Lemmy, who is uncompromising and unapologetic. I see this man as someone who's had the guts to live life on his own terms--believing in himself and always staying true to his art.
I've been a Motorhead fan for only a short time. Only knew of them from the "Ace of Spades" video that I had first seen 20-some years ago. I always remembered the thunderous bass & drums and the searing guitar riffs. But, what I recall even more so was the frontman shouting the lyrics. "Who is that guy?" I had asked myself. The image remained in my head. But, thanks to our wonderful radio staions, driven by $$$, failing to promote bands, and ignorant of rock n roll, my image of Motorhead slowly faded.
Years later, with the Internet at my disposal, I researched this band, getting drawn to various interviews. I bought the CDs and read anything on this band that I could dig up. I wasn't disappointed--I only regretted that I hadn't checked them out years earlier. But I digress . . . coming across this book was the cherry on top of my heavy metal sundae!
The writing is terse, often humorous. Lemmy goes off on tangents, but I never minded, as I found every word interesting. Quite often, he'd tell a story, and I was left wondering, what happened after that? What did you think? Where are these people now? The interactions with other bands was particularly enjoyable, but like a drug, I still wanted more.
Anyway, Lemmy and Motorhead can count on me to be a dedicated fan, always awaiting their next CD. As for "White Line Fever" I'm reading it again. I enjoyed it that much.
Always,
Bill Kozlowski

Book Description
Max Euwe was World Chess Champion in the 1930s and he collaborated with International Master Kramer to write this great treatise on how to play chess middlegames. Book I of the series covers pawn formations and static features of the game of chess. Thousands of satisfied customers have made this one of the most popular books on chess middlegames. Completely re-edited and translated to algebraic notation in this 1994 edition.
Customer Reviews:
too classic.......2007-08-29
I guess classic is the right word for it, for better and for worse.
it has quite an old attitude, before the modern chess (sacrifices are not even considered an option, if there is no immediate benefit).
good for beginners (say up to 1700), but I think that's about it.
you can see a remark on this book in the introduction of Watson's book:
Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy
CHESS.......2005-09-14
This book is outstanding if you want to get better at chess,
buy both volumes of this book.
Forget the opening until you've gone through this book.
It may take some time to go through, but believe you me ,it
we be more than worth it.
Very instructive.......2005-04-25
These are wonderfully instructive books. Full games are used to illustrate specific points. If enjoy Euwe and Meidens's Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur, let these be your next books on strategy. (I suggest sticking with an author you like.) These are probably most helpful for someone rated between 1600 and 1800 USCF. (Never waste time on chess books that are over your head.)
If you have trouble with the binding, search the web for the books in ChessBase format. They are encrypted, and the key is found in the books themselves. So once you have bought the books, you can read them in ChessBase at no extra charge.
4 stars for the books, plus one for the files.
Classics that should be in every chess player's library.......2005-04-06
Max Euwe was a great chess player, and with real insight into what separates masters from the rest of us. These books won't teach you how to play the middlegame. For that you need "My System" and "Pawn Power in Chess". But if you are already a competent tournament player, who wants an enumeration of all the major pawn structures that you might encounter, along with classic examples of grandmaster play, buy these books.
A tremendous instructional book!.......2004-02-05
The last guy to review this book down below apparently meant to give it 5 stars, but instead gave it zero. Oops!
This book, along with Book 2 on Dynamic Features, was a very big reason why I made it up to a USCF Expert rating.
Buy these two books. Study them. Watch your rating climb!
