Book Description
Francis Bacon Commitment and Conflict Wieland Schmied
Francis Bacon is given a highly insightful re-examination through critical commentary, brilliant reproductions and private photographs in this beautifully produced flexi edition.
The existential anxiety of modern man, the inescapability of death, and the catastrophe of loneliness are some of the themes that wend their way through Francis Bacon's work, much of which took the form of triptychs or tortured self-portraits. In this comprehensive study of one of the twentieth century's most passionately committed artists, Wieland Schmied offers an insightful overview of Bacon's life, analyzes his paintings and examines the creative processes they embody. He explores in depth Bacon's subtle use of space, the development of his imagery, idiosyncratic painting technique, and place in the pantheon of twentieth-century artists.
Wieland Schmied is the author of many books on twentieth-century art. He lives in Munich, Germany.

too small to read.......2007-09-26
The type was so small it was almost unreadable. It's as if the book was a small, cheap version of a large art book.
Not what but How.......2007-07-26
This is a fine book, content is five stars. My problem is with the pt. size of the text. I would say the type in this book is 1/3 the size of most books. If you use glasses or have trouble reading small type this is not a book you will be able to read on the subway. Photos, reproductions, information and price are very good. Have fun reading it, just know that if the lay out was different the text could have been larger.
Definitive Volume.......2001-06-13
Of all the books in print about the works of Francis Bacon, so many of them can be browsed without paying much attention to the commentary. Not here. This volume is extravagantly illustrated with many lesser known paintings by Francis Bacon, but it doesn't stop there. There is a very fine chronological timeline with photographs which show us the progression of the artist, his friends, lovers, influencing photographs, and interactions with other artists of his day. There is also a complete Exibition Schedule which holds some fascinating bits of information even to the avid Bacon fan. There are many photographs of Bacon's infamous studio in all its squallid splendor - some with the artist, some after his death. For sheer joy in getting to know a troubled genius, this book should be high on the list of recommended texts.

Book Description
Every Fabulous Girl knows that elegant manners, proper thank-you notes, the perfect pair of shoes, and basic social savoir faire will get you through many, if not most, of life’s occasions. But what about those special situations that every girl encounters—the wince-inducing, hair-curling dilemmas and debacles that can rattle even the most fabulous woman to her core? For those times when perfect table manners won’t save the day, The Fabulous Girl’s Guide to Grace Under Pressure offers a crash course in extreme etiquette—a scenario-by-scenario, must-have manual for surviving the stickiest, trickiest situations that come your way.
What should you do if you catch your boyfriend in bed with another woman? What if that woman is your best friend? What happens if you get a bit too tipsy at your company party and make an inappropriate comment to your boss? Tackling all areas of urban life—from the workplace, to friendships, to sex and courtship—authors Kim Izzo and Ceri Marsh show you how to overcome even the most excruciating circumstances with the Audrey Hepburn-esque style and finesse that are the hallmark of the Fabulous Girl. You’ll learn how to gracefully handle predicaments such as:
• Your ex-boyfriend becomes famous
• Your credit card is declined while you’re dining with a client
• Your assistant is trying to get your job
• You get caught having broom-closet sex with a coworker
• You catch your friends complaining about you
• Your shopping buddy gets caught shoplifting
• You decide to call off your wedding at the last minute
No matter how poised and well-mannered you are, the adventurous life of a Fabulous Girl inevitably leads to a few high-stakes dilemmas. Charming, witty, and eminently practical, The Fabulous Girl’s Guide to Grace Under Pressure arms you with the know-how to stylishly deal with whatever insanity life throws your way—and remain fabulous throughout it all.
Customer Reviews:
This is a fun little book.......2005-10-16
Don't read this book if you're feeling morally evolved and compassionate; but do read it if you feel like being wicked, shallow, and frivolous. There's a place for that. You read this book in the same way that you read Cosmopolitan or a tawdry romance novel-for the fantasy of it. There are days when you feel like wearing stiletto heels and skimming the surface of social interaction. This book is good for that sort of narcissism.
Read this book as a source of ideas, but get some other sources as well; I'm told that Emily Post and your mother have some good thoughts. We all need advice for sticky and tricky situations, and this one pampers your fantasy life even as it offers some chatty common sense (or, other times, some awful ploys-read Grace Under Pressure with a grain of salt under your tongue).
I've used this book when I'm in a snit with a friend. I've used this book to bolster my confidence. I've used this book as a source of catty catharsis- but bear the following in mind: it's easy to outgrow this book. It's neither mature nor classy. It's only good for those days when you feel like returning to the center of the universe.
Read Grace Under Pressure in bed, with a box of chocolates and rollers in your hair. It'll make you feel feminine, in charge, and worthy of those towering five-inch heels. Just remember how practical five-inch heels are, and place this book in the same category.
Crass, shallow, and anything but elegant.......2004-12-30
How about calling it "The Call-Girl's guide to f*** etiquette?" As a fabulous girl, I was appalled. Bought it, read it, returned it. Is that a faux-pas?? Apologies to social dilettantes Kim Izzo and Ceri Marsh.
yuk.......2004-12-11
The advice was ho hum, but the disturbing undercurrent about the book was the basic definition of a "fabulous girl"--the world these authors describe is a world in which the FG is one who may have sex with anyone, anywhere, any time, etc. Example, on sex in public: "sometimes she just can't help herself." On having VD: "You realize that it could have been one of five men who gave it to you and that means you may have given it to any and all of the others. Ugh." Ugh indeed.
Not too different...........2004-08-21
The concept of the Fabulous Girl (FG) first came up in Kim Izzo and Ceri Marsh's first book, "The Fabulous Girl's Guide to Decorum." But they belly-flop in their second book, "The Fabulous Girl's Guide To Grace Under Pressure," primarily because it comes across as a retread of the first book.
What do you do if you have a crush on a coworker -- and you already have a guy? How do you deal with a scandal? Being caught in flagrante by your boss? (Hint: Say it will never happen again!) And what about blind date etiquette? Izzo and Marsh cover these problems and many more, covering friends, sex, dating, work and longtime relationships.
For a modern woman, the field of etiquette can be a tricky one. How can you be courteous at your work and everyday life, without losing the necessary toughness? Izzo and Marsh have a fair number of tips for where the lines should be drawn. Good tips, bad tips, and really ugly tips ("He proposes, but you're not ready").
The biggest problem with "Guide to Grace" is that it treads very little new turf. Like its predecessor, it's mostly about manners. Not serious pressure. And when reading tips on relationships and workplace problems, there's a certain feeling of deja vu. It's like Izzo and Marsh had to write another book, but couldn't quite think of enough original material, so they retread old ground.
What's more, it doesn't really handle situations that are "under pressure." Okay, you have a friend who is a wolf in sheep's clothing. How is that "pressure"? It's a mildly sticky situation, but certainly not anything to get too worked up about. There are a handful of situations that are genuinely tense -- such as advice on stalker ex-boyfriends -- but there's a lot more on how to avoid embarrassment. Not sticky, not tricky, not outrageous -- just moderately embarrassing.
Kim Izzo and Ceri Marsh boldly go where they've already gone in "The Fabulous Girl's Guide to Grace Under Pressure." While it has some fairly interesting tips -- but nothing too "pressured" -- this book ends up feeling stale and thin as a month-old Saltine.
Not your traditional etiquette book.......2004-08-16
This book is kind of cute, but it was definitely not what I expected. To be honest after attempting to read the book several times I gave up without finishing it. The advice the book does give on etiquette is just plain common sense. There isn't anything "sticky, tricky, or outrageous" about the situations described in this book.
If you're looking for a book of how to handle modern day etiquette I would definitely read "Things You Need to be Told" by the Etiquette Grrls.

Nice Look at Superb Comic Duo.......2007-03-11
This nicely-photographed look at the films of Laurel and Hardy should put smiles on many faces. Author William Everson lists their films in chronological order, offering a synopsis for each and analyzing its strengths and weaknesses. The author also provides a box listing the producer (usually Hal Roach), director, supporting cast members, etc. Stan Laurel (1890-1965) and Oliver Hardy (1892-1957) teamed up for some 100 shorts and feature films during their successful 1927-1945 partnership, and most appear in these pages (a few "lost" films do not). The author also provides a brief biography of both men, a look at their early careers before they teamed up, and an analysis of their routines. I gave this enjoyable book just four stars due to a couple factual errors (Laurel's birth year is off) and an omission of biographical trivia. For example, Hardy enjoyed the track, while Laurel in retirement helped rising comics like Dick Van Dyke, and took calls from curious fans in his Santa Monica apartment (his number was listed). Despite these minor flaws, this is an amusing and informative read.
As many know, the official Laurel and Hardy appreciation club ("The Sons of the Desert") is on-line and currently has many chapters in North America, Europe and Australia.
The Complete Films of Laurel and Hardy by Everson.......2005-05-19
This book is perfect for Laurel and Hardy enthusiasts. It contains
a solid introduction on the evolution of the partnership with
dozens of pictures of the dual team. They played in tens of
films including: Forty-Five Minutes from Hollywood, Why Girls Love
Sailors, Flying Elephants, Call of the Cuckoo, The Finishing Touch,
Liberty, Be Big and a host of others. This volume would make a fine
gift for any student, film enthusiast or cultural enthusiast.
It is well worth the price charged for the considerable value
of the pictorial content alone. This work complements an earlier
version published in the 1960s.
First guide to Laurel & Hardy movies is still a great read.......2001-01-18
Motion-picture authority William K. Everson wrote the first book-length guide to Laurel & Hardy movies (it was originally published in 1967). If you or someone you know are Laurel & Hardy fans, this book is a lot of fun. Everson summarizes each Laurel & Hardy film and discusses the various strong and weak points. You'd think this would be dry and dull, but Everson knew and loved his subject, and his very enjoyable book has given many Laurel & Hardy fans the chance to become familiar with the films. There are also dozens and dozens of photographs. The book's only drawback was not Everson's fault: several "lost" Laurel & Hardy films have been rediscovered since 1967, but the publisher decided against revising the book. So the text is still vintage 1967, and now it isn't really the "Complete" films of Laurel & Hardy, but it's still a fine "episode guide."
One of the Best Laurel and Hardy Books.......2001-01-13
I would have rated this book with 5 stars instead of 4 except that it has some factual errors. These are minor though and this book is really a classic on my favourite comedy couple. It tells about each of their films in chronological order. The other books on L&H I recommend are 'The Magic Behind the Movies', 'Mr L and Mr H' and also 'Babe' by John McCabe, and 'Stan' bt Fred Guiles. Also I recommend to everyone who loves funny things to read a novel called 'Rastus Reilly'. It is very naughty but in a nice way and it echoes L&H movies in some ways.
Book Description
"The form society assumes at a given moment is reflected in the art of that moment. That art, so closely bound to the life it mirrors, is affected in an analogous way by the crisis through which the contemporary society may be passing. The art of our time illustrates this parallelism in a most striking way. And it is the object of this book to exemplify this correspondence in the field of contemporary music." from the author's preface

Customer Reviews:
A must have Book.......2006-11-04
This Accessory gives a lot of info to go on a adventure around thay, Aglarond, Rashemen and other places with full detail.
Just enough to make your players have a rough time being on the land of the red wizards =D.
A great book !!! a must have indeed.
A decent approach to the unapprachable east.......2006-08-31
Very informative of details within the area, especially like the maps of the regions. A must if you wish to base your campaigns in this area. A definate fine addition to my D&D library.
Great Reference Fun Reading .......2005-02-28
I am not sure were some of the reviewers get their ideas, but this book is an ideal reference book. It does go over materials that are already written, but thats the idea. The book is not suppose to create material or change what was already written. If you dont want to collect all the old materials on the East by the original TSR authors, this book is perfect.
Excellent regional source book!.......2004-12-14
"Unapproachable East" is an excellent Source Book, full of yummy background info and flavour elements. The details and info on the various sub-regions presented are quite refined and are very interesting. The maps are perfectly made, while the Feats and Prestige Classes are of excellent quality and help you give the right tone and regional "feel" for your character.
I remain disappointed at the artwork and will therefore limit my review to 4 stars.
stef_bocklin
Unfairly maligned, this is a good FR sourcebook........2004-02-09
I decided to write this review because I think some of the other reviewers here at Amazon have given this title short shrift.
The Unapproachable East is a great place to set a Forgotten Realms adventure which is different than your typical "Medieval Western Europe" type fantasy world. Admittedly, the book is not as good as the Silver Marches supplement, but it's pretty close. One reviewer mentioned that the artwork was as good as some home-printing jobbie. I disagree. There is some artwork that is stylisticly different than that we have seen in other WotC FR supplements. Some pieces are outstanding such as the Simbul's Palace and some are quite memorable such as the Ring of Grey Flames. Overall, I liked the art.
Content is also good. Here is a list of the chapters:
1. Introduction
2. Prestige Classes
3. Regions and Feats
4. Magic and Spells
5. Magic Items
6. Monsters
7. Adventuring in the East
8. Aglarond
9. The Great Dale
10. Rashemen
11. Thay
12. Thesk
13. Border Areas
As you can see, the content is pretty well balanced between background campaign information and "guidebook" overviews of the various areas. There is a good amount of plot hooks and plenty of places for a DM to set up a FR adventure that is different from the norm. I paid full price for this book when I bought it at a brick and mortar, and feel that it is well worth the value. There is plenty of material to read and enjoy even if you never use a bit of it for gameplay. It is much better than the 1st edition D&D compilation "Dreams of the Red Wizards". I don't give it five stars because it is not as much value for the money as the FR campaign setting (more pages +map) or the Silver Marches supplement (lower price +map) which I consider the best two FR products so far.
