5 out of 5 stars Authenticating Jules Cheret Artwork and Posters.......2006-02-23

This is the authoritative source for all the artwork and posters of Jules Cheret, who perfected color lithography in the late 1800's. There are a number of color slides of original Jules Cheret posters plus excellent descriptive information to help one identify a suspected Jules Cheret poster. The catalog is by theme or advertiser without an index or table of contents to help one located the exact page where, let's say, Moulin-Rouge or Olympia might start. This does then force scanning to find the start of the catagory one might want - an inconvenience. In spite of this, once you discover the catagory area, the material is informative and precise enough to help with identification.

On his only prior visit to Ireland, English songwriter-comic Tony Hawks had seen a man hitchhiking with a refrigerator. For years, he was wont to tell the tale during late-night drinking matches, and after one particularly heavy-duty night of partying, he awoke to find a bet scrawled pillowside: a friend wagered 100 pounds that Hawks wouldn't travel Ireland for a month with a refrigerator at his side.

Out of this stupid premise, a ridiculously amusing book was born. Quickly discovered by the Irish media, the thumbing Englishman finds that he and his box fridge are elevated to celebrity status, and there's no dearth of rides, places to stay, or goofy people to meet, from kings to spoons players to locals who take his fridge surfing. As insightful about the strange inner workings of Hawk's mind as it is about charming peculiarities of Irishmen--it's doubtful that Hawks would have been similarly embraced by Germans, Italians, or the French--Round Ireland with a Fridge is an entirely silly, heartwarming tale told in a rollicking funny and refreshing style. --Melissa Rossi

      Book Description

I hereby bet Tony Hawks the sum of One Hundred Pounds that he cannot hitchhike round the circumference of Ireland, with a fridge, within one calendar month.Have you ever made a drunken bet? Worse still, have you ever tried to win one?In attempting to hitchhike round Ireland with a fridge, Tony Hawks did both, and his foolhardiness led him to one of the best experiences of his life.Joined by his trusty travelling companion-cum-domestic appliance, he made his way from Dublin to Donegal, from Sligo through Mayo, Galway, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Wexford, Wicklow - and back again to Dublin. In their month of madness, Tony and his fridge met a real prince, a bogus king, and the fridge got christened. They surfed together, entered a bachelor festival, and one of them had sex without the other knowing. And unexpectedly, the fridge itself became a momentary focus for the people of Ireland. An international bestseller, Round Ireland with a Fridge is a classic travel adventure in the tradition of Bill Bryson with a dash of Dave Barry. AUTHORBIO: TONY HAWKS lives in London and divides his time equally between writing, performing, and playing tennis. He makes regular appearances on British radio and is currently the host of The Best Show in the World.

Tony Hawks is a legend. Absolutly brilliant.... one of the few books which have actually made me laugh out loud. Be wary of reading in public places because the constant smile/giggling to yourself can prove to be a little socially akward.

Round Ireland With A Fridge by Tony Hawks
Written by a standup comic, Tony Hawks, and what ensued after his 100 pound bet made after a bit of tippling in a pub, that he could hitchhike around the coast of Ireland in 30 days, with a refrigerator. You could expect this book would be funny, and yup, it is.
Oh the pressure to win the bet, Tony gaining the cheerleading backing of the Irish radio host Gerry Ryan, and the assurance that yes, this is "a totally purposeless idea". Tony quickly got me cheering for him.
Lots of meeting with random and rural Irish folks in pubs and on the road, giving him rides, the whole ridiculous idea of traveling with a fridge that gains a name by fans in a pub, and a blessing of the fridge by a genuine Mother Superior.
Yes, he slept in a doghouse one night, and traveled with his fridge squished inside a trailer with a mare and her colt.
The map in the book serves as an essential road guide as you read and journey with Tony, as he progresses from places like Benbeg to Killybegs. The journey includes an attempt to meet the King of Tory Island, and a handshake with Prince Charles.
Pick up this book and prepare to laugh, if you like the absurd, as I do.

I had a trip to Ireland planned and a friend of mine recommended this book. It's hilarious! What a fun read and it really gives you insight as to how wonderful the people of Ireland are, and how willing they are to help out someone - even if it is an English guy with a fridge. Enjoy!

      4 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2007-02-09

This book was a hoot! I love anything that takes me around Ireland, my favorite place to visit, and this book provided a very funny, unusual tour.

5 out of 5 stars Silly, silly, silly.......2006-06-09

I loved this book from the start! I first read the book shortly after my first trip to Ireland. While my trip did not involve a kitchen appliance, we kept to same kind of 'go where the road takes us' kind of philosophy. I have given this book as a gift a number of times and every friend I've given it to has adored it. People who can laugh at themselves and make you laugh right along are a rare and wonderful breed. Wouldn't it be lovely to find and appreciate the absurd all the time?

            Book Description

With Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, Tokyo Fist and Bullet Ballet, Shinya Tsukamoto has become one of the most widely praised filmmakers in Japan today. Edgy, intense and overwhelming, Tsukamoto's films are nightmarish visions of a world in which man's greatest enemy is his own environment of cold concrete and twisted technology. His debut film, the legendary cyberpunk masterpiece Tetsuo: The Iron Man, saw him compared to David Lynch, David Cronenberg and Ridley Scott. The film rejuvenated the Japanese film industry, paving the way for an entire generation of young Japanese directors Hideo Nakata (The Ring) and Takeshi Kitano (Zatoichi). It also deeply influenced Western filmmakers as diverse as Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill), David Fincher (Fight Club) and the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix). • Illustrated with hundreds of stills, behind-the-scenes pictures and rare photographs from Tsukamoto's private collection

Mes seems to find the perfect blend of delivering information and criticism in an enjoyable fun to read manner. Its a rare and pleasent experience when I can devour a crit book like I would a standard novel. While Agitator, his book on Miike, focused more on the individual films and their effect/genre/crit, Iron Man seems to be more about the person and thought process behind the films. It puts a nice fresh spin on things.

4 out of 5 stars Another winner from Mes........2006-05-18

Tom Mes, Iron Man: The Cinema of Shinya Tsukamoto (FAB Press, 2005)

Shinya Tsukamoto makes very good, very odd films. He became something of an overnight sensation in underground cinema with his first theatrical release, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, and it's all been uphill from there. Tom Mes, author of the previous Agitator: The Cinema of Takashi Miike, has written the first comprehensive critical work on Tsukamoto, and, like Agitator, it is a must for the library of any fan of Japanese film.

As with Mes' previous book, Iron Man is sectioned up film by fil, taking a close look at each both on its own and also within the greater scope of the themes that run through all of Tsukamoto's films. It's fascinating to see how Tsukamoto's own obsessions shape each film on which he works in the same way it was seeing how Miike's themes worked, and Mes is just as adept at teasing the underlying symbolism here as he was there. A must-own for Tsukamoto fans, and highly recommended for anyone interested in film criticism. ****

4 out of 5 stars Good book but slightly outdated.......2006-05-17

While reading this book, you'll find much of the information and theories to be worth reading, but for the most part it's just outdated. So if you want to learn from the past in an attempt to better your future, this is the approach you should take. Otherwise I would suggest "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen

3 out of 5 stars Should be retitled The Music Business: Career Opportunities That Don't Exist Anymore and Why They Never Will.......2005-12-13

I suspect that 15 years ago, this well-researched book was partially useful for the uninitiated; but the music business has changed so much in the last 10 years that this book is essentially now a "guide" to jobs you might have been able to get if you were ambitious enough 20 years ago. There are now only 4 monolithic media corporations that dominate and control every aspect of the music industry, a few so-called independents operate on the margins, but even they have to go cap in hand to the Big Four for distribution of their product; labels such as ECM and Ryko might offer something a little less mainstream, but they still require access to the distribution system owned by the large corporations. We all know that this lack of diversity has stiffled both innovative music and innovation in music delivery systems, and has resulted in AM and FM radio being so bad that millions of listeners are turning to PAID satelite radio in order to hear something other than what the media corps want you to listen to. This is not the author's fault, and clearly every so often he updates this work; the more recent chapters about the internet and the raging battle between the corporations that seek to destroy any new technology that threatens them (sheet music publishers tried to stop music being recorded when the phonograph was invented, home taping was "killing music" if you recall, so this is nothing new), be it digital downloads, MP3s, iPods, or whatever comes next. The problem with this book now is that it offers a sort of pathetic hope (not unlike the millions of self-help and get-rich-quick books published every week) of a career in "the music business", when in fact it is a career simply in "big business". To paraphrase Chuck Berry, "If I could do it all over again, first I'd go to business school, then I'd learn how to play the guitar." Many chapters end along similar lines; it's 2003 (in the book), and women still never get past mid-management, if they can get that far, women musicians have a much harder time getting recording contracts (Janis Ian has written some excellent on-line articles about this subject); work for classical musicians is drying up as orchestras fold or slim-down their seasons, and woe-betide a talented classical musician who has the misfortune of not being white, because he or she is most unlikely to get a seat in an orchestra unless as a token member, and this is the year 2003; musicians teaching music at colleges for additional income because they can't earn enough playing music full-time is no longer a viable option as there are so few college jobs available; becoming a session musician or singing on advertising sessions is harder than it ever was (and it was never easy) because session work is undertaken by a tight clique which rarely lets anyone else in, and modern recording techniques mean fewer musicians are required anyway; songwriters have far less options than ever before as most artists record their own work or producers use artists to record their compositions (check out Jimmy Webb's excellent book on songwriting, even he, a hit-making machine, has trouble getting songs placed with artists nowadays); concert promotion is a lucrative near-monopoly that does not take kindly to new kids on the block; a career in radio is harder to achieve than ever before because the FCC allows companies like Clear Channel to own hundreds of stations that do not require staff like they used to; the studio work and engineering chapter is subtitled "The Decline of Studio Work"; these are what the book tells us, not what I've made up. No new avenues are suggested, only the old ones that are ever-diminishing. Finishing this book made me feel quite sad. I once worked in the music industry, so some of what this book tells us is true, but to a time long-past; for it seems today the only real opportunities that exist in the music industry are for individuals that positively dislike music, who themselves have no or little musical talent whatsoever, and are only interested in making a lot of money fast by paying the artist(s) as little as possible, or nothing at all in most cases, via complex contracts that contain items such as deductions for "breakages" which only ever applied in the time of fragile 78s. If the reader is curious about a time when some of the music industry was run by individuals with integrity that actually liked music, read Jac Holzman's book about how he founded Elektra Records. One last gripe: As this book has been revised three times down the years, how come EMI Records is still mispelt EMT on page 44, Scott McKenzie's hit song "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" - that's what it says on the record label of the actual 45 - is called "If You Go to San Francisco"? Doesn't anyone proof-read books before they're printed anymore? What is the point in revising books if mistakes are not corrected? This slap-dash approach to typography does not instill confidence in the other details printed as actual career advice; or perhaps no one really cares anymore, and that's why the music industry is about to go the way of the dinosaurs. Good luck to anyone who actually obtains a job, let alone a career, in the music industry after reading this book. Mr. Weissman's personal anecdotes and observations are indeed amusing and enlightening, perhaps that would make a better book altogether. To my mind, these job-advice books that are published almost five every minutes - at a time when there are hundreds of over-qualified candidates for even the crummiest of minium wage jobs - are morally bankrupt ventures raising hopes and providing no real answers to anything. My local Goodwill is crammed to the rafters with last-year's self-help books, barely read and certainly of no real use whatsoever: if every get-rich book, improve your job prospects, how-to-find-true love tomes were of any use, surely most people that read them would be in great jobs, have found happiness and wealth and there wouldn't be a need for any more tomes entitled "Eat Lots and Stay Slim", "How to Build Your Own Space Rocket at the Bottom of Your Garden and Fly to Another Planet and Meet Your Perfect Partner", "Making a Million Dollars a Day from the Comfort of Your Armchair Doing Only Five Minutes of Work a Week."

5 out of 5 stars Well worth my time.......2005-01-22

The first book I ever bought on Amazon, I decided to order this after seeing it in my high school library in 97 or 98. It struck me as something that could be very useful in the future, as amateur a musician as I was. It then sat on my shelf, even though it got abused traveling everywhere I lived since then, until just last week. The pages were yellowed - and it was already an outdated edition - by the time I opened it up. I thought I was bad at staying committed to any book, but I'm already more engrossed in it than I've been to anything in years.

This book explains the music industry from top to bottom, so as a new band member I understand where every person in the business is coming from. The system seems huge, intimidating, and unrelenting, but at least I can get an idea of how the pieces work. I can't imagine how anyone could have a career in music (performing, especially) and not read a book like this one. Anybody who sets out without the prior background work is doomed to failure. (Even luck doesn't last.) It's obvious that every chapter itself is a simplified summary, and probably a book could be written on each, but the moderately bite-sized pieces are what I can handle. As it is, I'm only on page 88 right now, but I can't wait to pick it up and read the next chapter.

And when I'm all done, I can head over to the library and read everything revised in the new edition. Then I'll have my jump-start!

The music industry is an area where you must always watch your back as more and more people try to make it big and step on your dreams and goals to fulfill theirs. A decent guide that presents ways in which not to get involved on other people's business and get the best out of the efforts you are making to succeed. The book also presents the majority of scams and deceit plans that lawyer and other people have installed for you. A book with a medium structure and a not so easy to understand context, a good buy for the emerging musician, producer, etc.

"The Chess Players Bible" -James Eade

Author James Eade seems to be distancing himself from his earlier standard, "Chess For Dummies" and I'm very pleased to see him introduce another beginner's chess book. This one is better by far.

This is a different format from the majority of chess books, for a couple of different reasons. (1) It is spiral bound, so that once you fold the book open, it stays open, and will fold flat for easy study. (2) It is ILLUSTRATED throughout with clear, concise images of the chess board and piece positions, and in COLOR too!

The coverage of OPENINGS is excellent, from the Romantic Openings to the Queeen's Pawn games, etc This is really great material, in its presentation, for easy assimilation by beginners. Because of the novelty of the splendid illustrations, this book receives a special recommendation.

TACTICS: Eade gives good, basic coverage of tactics, and I believe his illustrations help clarify these for beginners.

                ***About the Author: James Eade***

James Eade is a very STAND UP guy, taking on the entire chess establishment in the USA with charges that the U.S. Chess Federation was being mismanaged and driven to bankruptcy (which it was at the time!). Notwithstanding, EADE was one of three individuals to bail out the USCF when, near financial ruin, USCF could not afford to send a chess team to the OLYMPIADS. EADE is a strong advocate for chess in the Olympics. By any standard, this is a STAND UP guy.

                ***The Price***

The price is fair, and not excessive, because AMAZON reduces the full retail to $14.95. Even the full retail price of $21.95 is not necessarily excessive, because spiral-bound books are more expensive to produce. In my opinion, most beginner books priced over $20.00, are a rip-off, but that is for 2 specific reasons. Paperbound books are not that expensive to make, so that $21.95 is a "padded" price for a plain paperback. That is not the case here. The second reason a $20.00 book is a rip-off generally, is that paperbacks that are EXCELLENT beginning instruction have been around for years, and often sell for around $9.95, so that many new books are merely endless and mindless REPETITIONS of the same teachings that have been around for over a hundred years.

However, I am recommending Eade's "Chess-Player's Bible" as a fine book, if you are waiting for the next edition. The reason you should wait is that there are some obvious PROOFREADING errors that require correction; for example, this crazy mix up on the endgame study from page 190 where White is supposed to promote the rearward pawn to a Queen:

                White K at f4, white pawns at f3 & f2
Black K at f6, WHITE TO MOVE:

                1.Ke4 Ke6
                2.f4 Kg6??? (only if Black's K moves 2 squares at a time!?)
                3.f5 Kf7
                4.Ke5 Ke7
                5.f6+ Kf7
6.Ke6??? (violates the Rule that says KINGS must stay one square apart. Here, the White K moves right next to Black K, an obvious ILLEGAL move!)
continuing, Black King plays 6. ...Kf8

I don't know the solution to the problem, but the 2 major errors here indicate that the proofreader did not do his work. Please do not mistake the criticism here, because the book is still worth having. Even some of the great classics of chess literature, such as REUBEN FINE's books, contain errors.

The ILLUSTRATIONS are a superb feature, far exceeding most paperbacks, and Eade may be setting a new standard. This book is highly recommended. ---Bruce R. Bain, President, Denver Chess Club

                5 out of 5 stars Chess Player's Bible-A Big Amen!.......2005-09-22

A very informative book on how to play chess and well illustrated. Two Thumbs Up!

5 out of 5 stars My dreams of perfect beginner book have become true!.......2005-05-07

I thought that a comprehensive book explaining all basic stuff in a lively way would be an impossible task. But Mr. Eade has really made it!

Firstly, I love the 3-D diagrams, the layout of book is more visual as in usual chess books and I must admit it really works! There are first of all all the elementary stuff, rules etc but after that you get ao overview of opening principles, not forgetting the hypermodern approach. There's a section describing openings and their general ideas, there's a section for tactics and strategy.

I'm just overwhelmed of this superb book. James Eade explains some fundamental pawn structures which are typical for specific openings - that's something most beginner books don't do. There's some nice guide for essential endgame stuff, this book is simply the best beginner book availible I think players up to 1800 can benefit most of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Suitable for about a USCF 1600 rated player too!.......2005-04-25

I'm about a USCF 1600 (Class B player) and I'm improving from this book because it is suitable for me.

This is why l like this James Eade chess book.
                1. This book relies on the chess diagrams, not the chess notation, so learning from this book is easier because it's less confusing. Easy to follow diagrams!
                2. I love the spiral form because the book holds flat by itself on a table! It is much better than paper back and hard back form!
                3. There are 3D diagrams on key positions on almost every page, so I can easily follow through learning new strategy.
                4. This book covers all aspects of the game clearly, TACTICS such as the fork, deflection, pin, overloading, discovery etc, endgame such as opposition, triangulation, basic king pawn endgames, queen vs rook endgame etc. , MIDDLEGAME/ STRATEGY such as making a luft, bad bishop, good bishop, how to make use of your rooks, knights, outposts, pawn islands, pawn chains etc. OPENING it shows you different kinds of opening such as the Silican, Ruy Lopez, French Defense, Queen Pawn opening, how to play the opening such as development, timing, etc.) so I can improve my all around game!

This is why I don't like this book.
                1. There are no chess excercises/problems to test your knowledge in the book. This is key to improve and I hope James Eade can add chess excercises/problems to another edition of this book if he writes another edition of this book.
                2. There are no 'winning game pointers', such in the other book, The Idiot's Guide for Chess. (Patrick Pointer's) I hope James Eade can add 'winning game pointers' in an another edition if he writes one.

                Overall, This book is good.
                Why?
                1. It has helped me gain about 100 points, (1500 to 1600) in about 4 months.
