A Nice, Standard Biography.......2007-05-03
The Parkinson is a nice, standard biography, by no means definitive. I only rate it at 4 stars because the plates are mostly half-page rather than full. Constable is an artist for whom you want to see LARGE plates. There are also a number of nice, small drawings. It's not the only Constable book to have, but worth finding for an overview of his work.
Well done Ronald Parkinson.......2002-05-07
I found this book to be a very insightful look into the work of John Constable. Ronald Parkinson, the author, shows remarkable restraint by resisting the urge to transform Constable into a mythic misunderstood genius from the glorious history of English painting. The book reads like a good biography. It tells us what Constable was up to, what artists he was looking at, and the images of what he was painting at that time. What more could you ask for.
My only qualm with the book was its lack of information on Constable's contemporaries. A few hints at what Turner was painting was not enough. I would have liked to have seen more examples of English painters dealing with the landscape even if it meant details from the backgrounds of uninspired portraits.
All in all this was a wonderful book, even if you have little interest in English landscape paintings.

Warning: The Darwin Awards are not for the tenderhearted. The vastly popular Web site, now a book, recognizes "individuals who ensure the long-term survival of our species by removing themselves from the gene pool in a sublimely idiotic fashion." Who wins a Darwin Award? Terrorists who set their bombs on daylight saving time and delivered them on standard time, blowing themselves up. Folks who put garlands around a Bengal tiger's neck. Guys in Cambodia who took turns stomping on a land mine they'd brought into a bar. The six Egyptians who drowned trying to rescue a chicken that fell into a well. (The chicken alone survived.) The Buenos Aires husband who threw his wife out an eighth-floor window during a spat, noticed she'd gotten caught in power lines, and jumped after her, "angrily trying to finish the job, or remorsefully hoping to rescue her." He went splat; she escaped unscathed. There are some urban legends, like the sergeant said to have attached a Jet-Assisted Take-Off unit to his Chevy and hit a cliff 125 feet up (not true, says author Wendy Northcutt), and all-too-true honorable mentions, like the man who put weather balloons on his lawn chair, soared to 16,000 feet, crashed into power lines, blacked out Long Beach, California, and told police, "A man can't just sit around." My favorite winner: the man who was bitten nine times by the same king brown snake because he put it in a bag on his car seat and kept sticking his hand back into the bag. Why did he pick up the snake with his left hand? "Because I was holding a beer in my right one." And where did this take place? In Darwin, Australia. If you think somebody up there doesn't have a wicked sense of humor, The Darwin Awards may change your mind. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
"Only two things are infinite-the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not so sure about the universe." -Albert Einstein
Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, The Darwin Awards vividly portrays the finest examples of evolution in action, and shows us just how uncommon common sense can be.
Marvel at the thief who steals electrical wires without shutting off the current. Gape at the lawnchair jockey who floats to a height of 16,000 feet suspended by helium balloons. Learn from the man who peers into a gasoline can using a cigarette lighter. All three -- and many more -- contend for Darwin Awards when their choices culminate in magnificent misadventures.
These tales of trial and awe-inspiring error--verified by the author and endorsed by website readers--illustrate the ongoing saga of survival of the fittest in all its selective glory.

Macabre and Funny!.......2007-01-10
If you can find descriptions of events in which people die of their own stupidity funny -- which I did -- you'll love this book. The premise itself is funny: We are all lucky that folks who die of their own idiocy are therefore removed from the gene pool. Terrific.

The Darwin Awards
By: Wendy Northcutt
Thirty gallons of rhino diarrhea! Thirty gallons! That story is still hilarious to me every time I think of it 20 days after I read it. There's a lot of death and Darwin's Theory of elimination in this book while there's a lot of comic relief in the book as well. Not only is there the process of elimination, but there's also a lot of false statements like stuff that was confirmed by Darwin in 1999. The truth is that Charles Robert Darwin died on April 19, 1889, one hundred and ten years after he died. This was a really good book from all the witticism, unexpected and amusingly weird stuff.
The requirements to get a Darwin Award are as listed: Survival of the Fittest: The candidate must remove himself from the gene pool, The candidate must be the cause of his own demise, The candidate must be capable of sound judgment, The event must be verified. Charles Darwin Theory of Evolution: A species must show variation, Variations must be inherited, Not all individuals in a population survive to reproduce, Some individuals can cope with selective pressures better than others.
There are some examples of stupidity and some of just being to smart and looking over what could happen, mostly plain stupidity. For example: guy goes to Russia and glues hand to rhino butt. Guy ends up in 30 gallons of rhino diarrhea. I think this is a great book because it shows how stupid people really are and how they can be so stupid as to try to blow up a hamster with extra strength nicotine stain remover. Wendy Northcutt's style of writing is so good because, I don't really know, I just think it is.
Excellent and hilarious book.......2006-08-29
The Darwin Awards: Evolution in action is one of the funniest books ever written. It has couple hundred stories of Darwin award winners(people who die or lose their means of reproduction in an extremely stupid way),Darwin award honorable mentions(Usually unconfirmed stories of people doing stupid stuff that don't die),Urban legends and personal accounts of people doing stupid stuff. If you think that it is funny to read a story about someone being crushed by a vending machine while trying to tip out a free bottle of soda, then this book is definately for you.
The Darwin Awards.......2006-02-06
The Darwin Awards is a collection of stories about real people who did something so stupid that they died or they almost died. The stories are put in categories like Natural Selection: Animal Disasters, or Relatively Dangerous: A Family Affair. Many people think that these stories are hilarious but I do not, I don't see how reading about people that died is funny. One of the stories talked about a woman who had a problem with her horse throwing his head back every time she tried to ride him, she decided to wrap the end of a rope around the horses neck and the other end around her waist. When the horse threw his head back it threw her onto the gowned and he ran over her and killed her. Most of the stories are like this, and do not seem funny to me at all. The writing of these stories is perfectly fine, but the stories just made me feel bad. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, unless they think someone dieing because they didn't know any better was funny. I am giving this book two stars because I did not like this book at all.

Introducing THE DARWIN AWARDS PAGE-A-DAY CALENDAR 2002.The calendar features a year's worth of stories and urban legends commemorating "individuals who remove themselves form the gene pool in a sublimely idiotic fashion".
There's a young man who choked to death on the sequined pasty he removed with his teeth from an exotic dancer and one who plunged to his death when he bungee jumped off a bridge in Virginia - he made the length of the bungee cord greater than the distance between the bridge and the ground. THE DARWIN AWARDS PAGE-A-DAY CALENDAR 2002 will keep you grinning and groaning throughout the year.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2002-12-12
This calendar is disappointing. I have read the books, which I found amusing. Apparently there is just not enough material for a calendar. Most of the entries in the calendar are not even Darwin Awards. Each week usually has a cartoon (most of which are not too funny.) Saturday and Sunday aren't ever awards. Saturdays usually have a "Darwinian Motto", an almost-clever twist on some common saying. Sundays have "Philosophy Sunday" entries, some almost-amusing dilemna posed by a Darwin Award nominee such as his having a twin. This leaves only 4 entries in most weeks and these entries usually only contain one confirmed story. The rest are self-proclaimed "Urban Legends" or unconfirmed stories (that seem contrived.) I'm almost sorry that I own this calendar, I was expecting to be amused.
Hilarious.......2002-02-04
This calendar is hilarious especially if you and your friends like to make fun of not so smart people.
Very funny!.......2002-01-22
The Darwin Awards is dedicated to those who have killed themselves in spectacularly stupid ways, removing themselves from the gene pool, hopefully before they have a chance to reproduce. This calendar is a mix of description of Darwin Award winners (and those who did were equally stupid, and yet somehow survived), cartoons, and mottos/thoughts for the day. This is a very funny calendar, one guaranteed to have people coming in to read it--which is happening to me! Buy it while you've got the change!
They're ALL good.......2001-12-07
I loved the Darwin page a day calendar! It is just as amusing as the site and the books. I enjoyed ALL of the illustrations in the calendar. They each offer a different take on this sort of humor.
I rated this a four star because every day should have had a cartoon.
You're Raving it's the Zeebarf Toons !.......2001-11-30
I read ahead in this calendar because I am giving it to my sister, who is in the medical profession and loves Darwin Awards. I would NEVER read ahead in my OWN 365 calendar. Anyway I can truly tell you this calendar is good all the way through. Sure Wendy spends a few early Sundays nattering on about the RUUULES but hell you need that background to understand what's 'specially funny about these stories. They kill themselves in an inane manner. They're blithering idiots oblivious of the warning signs. These buffoons do indeed deserve a hearty laugh on their way out the door. I mean the prison warden who was spying on the conjugal visit quarters from above... when the roof caved in! The men who competed for "Most Macho" status... by chainsawing off increasingly valuable parts of their anatomies! The gasoline. The fireworks. The intoxicants! But all this aside, I must disagree with the person above: it's the Zeebarf cartoons that make this calendar special. Zeebarf. All in all 100%. I hope my sister doesn't read this!

Customer Reviews:
Lives up to half its title.......2003-07-29
She's got the "Recognize" part down cold. The analyses are excellent. "Emulate," however, is almost entirely absent, except in the vaguest of terms. This book has helped me to become a slightly better viewer of movies, but not a significantly better writer of screenplays.
That's my major quibble. My minor quibble is the constant use of the word "great" when, in fact, what's really meant is "extremely solidly constructed, with clear points of interest for commentary." Not the same thing.
If you just don't know what makes a story tick, this book is good for getting you up to speed. If you already know what makes a story tick, and you're looking to expand your understanding in a practical, useful way, this is not a good book for it. For instance, I already understand what a subplot is--but being able to recognize it in a diagram after the fact isn't the same thing as knowing how to construct one. This book is mostly "Look at what a subplot looks like after you've made one." Again, recognition rather than emulation.
Worth the time, and interesting. But not as practically useful as I would have preferred.
Clear, Well Written and Accessible.......2002-08-07
This is a great book, written for film afficiandos as well as beginners. Well laid out and clearly explained, Secrets sets out important information on all aspects of screenwriting. I was impressed with the detail, clear choices in the examples the author uses and the ideas she sets forth. This is a real winner for those who really want to delve in and understand the creative process of screenwriting.
Fantastic! I highly recommend this book!.......2002-03-22
First off, it is important to watch the films in the order presented in the book. Each chapter builds upon the previous ones in a very logical and intuitive fashion. I watched each film, read the screenplays I could get my hands on, then read the corresponding chapter. Occasionally, I rewatched the film afterwards. This is a lengthy process, but it was well worth it. I felt like I was attending my own personal film school!
A short round up chapter at the end would have been welcome, but I suppose it wasn't really necessary. I did enjoy the 'What should I rent tonight?' appendix, and the bibliography provides somewhere for the reader to go.
Too Wordy.......2001-05-15
Great stuff, but this book could have been half as long. I don't have it in front of me, but lines like "you have to intrigue your readers, listeners, or, in our case, viewers" are torture and they're found on every page. Just say "audience." If scripts have to be lean and relevant, why not books about them?
It's a pretty good book, but it's too expensive. I need more value for my script procrastinating dollar.
BEST SCREENPLAY WRITING BOOK ON THE MARKET.......2001-05-11
Linda Cowgill's Secrets of Screenplay Structure is the finest example of accessible scholarship I have ever read. (I say this as a UCLA Ph.D. in Comparative Literature). Not only is it evident that Cowgill is someone who has what it takes to write REAL screenplays with depth and intelligence (we need more of those!), it is clear that she also has the ability to take the best films apart--like swiss watches--and help us understand exactly what makes them tick. And like a swiss watch, Cowgill's book is exceptionally well put together.
A listing of the titles of the 18 succinct chapters of Secrets of Screenplay Structure might help give an indication of the tremendous scope and depth of Cowgill's book, which analyzes and illustrates all of the major elements of story through film. Each chapter features a current or classic "study film," to illustrate its chapter's main points.
The book is divided as follows:
1)The Essence of Dramatic Structure; 2)The Three-Part Nature of Screenplay Structure ("Witness"); 3) Five key Focal Points (focusing on the THREE-ACT structure and its segments) ("Risky Business"); 4)Characterization's Relationship to Structure--including the vital point of character development and its relationship to plot structure("Casablanca"); 5)Theme's Relationship to Structure ("The Piano"); 6)The Structure of Plotting ("Chinatown"); 7) Review, which includes detailing the mechanics of what characters WANT and what,in contradiction, they NEED ("Quiz Show"); 8)The Structure of Subplots ("Tootsie"); 9) Structure and the Ensemble Film ("Diner," "Parenthood," "The Best Years of Our Lives,"Grand Hotel"); 10) Structure and the Nonlinear Plot ("Citizen Kane" and others); 11)Building Momentum: Structuring Scene and Action Sequences ("The Last of the Mohicans"); 12) Openings and Main Exposition ("Jerry Maguire"); 13)The Middle--the Rising Action; ("North by Northwest") 14)The Main Climax and Resolution ("One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"); 15)The Structure of Planting and Payoff ("Groundhog Day"); 16)The Structure of Scenes ("Se7en"); 17)Dialogue ("It Happened One Night"); 18)The Subtext of Meaning ("Thelma and Louise").
Cowgill's study films are works that have been used as examples in many other current screenplay writing books. However, Cowgill presents these films with a fresh, exceptionally insightful perspective, never wavering from the point she wishes to teach through the films' specific examples. Her thought is ORGANIZED; her writing is exemplary: clear, concise, lively and engaging.
I highly recommend Secrets of Screenplay Structure to new and established writers of any form of fiction. It is an elegant work of scholarship and practical advice by an artist in her own right. The only name that comes to mind right now who could pull off such dual and contradictory roles is that of T.S. Eliot.

Book Description
Culture After Humanism asks what happens to the authority of traditional Western modes of thought in the wake of postcolonial theory. Iain Chambers investigates moments of tension, interruptions which transform our perception of the world and test the limits of language, art and technology.
In a series of interlinked discussions, ranging in focus from Susan Sontag's novelThe Volcano Lover to the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, Jimi Hendrix and Baroque architecture and music, Chambers weaves together a critique of Western humanism, exploring issues of colonization and migration, language and identity. Culture After Humanism offers a new approach to cultural history, a 'post-humanist' perspective which challenges our sense of a world in which the subject is sovereign language, the transparent medium of its agency, and truth, the product of reason.

Fun book and great beanbags.......2007-06-24
I loved the hole pack. I was trying to find a cheap set of juggling balls to to start learning, when I saw this pack i didn't notice that the beanbags weren't balls but cubes and I was a bit worried at first. Anyway they are great, well balanced, with the right weight, and the unusual format is perfect to beginners, since you will drop them a lot they won't roll away from you like the rounds' ones.
Learned in 2 hours!.......2007-04-06
I'm not kidding... I did. The juggling balls are a perfect fit to anyone's hand. I bought the kit because I needed to learn how to juggle for a class, and I got an A! Pretty good for a first timer! Besides, it's a great exercise for your arms.. try it for a couple of hours and you'll see the effects!
Great book for a beginning juggler!.......2007-03-27
I bought this book after seeing a few friends juggling and finding the book on sale at my local Borders store. I didn't think it would take me long to get the hang of throwing and catching three beanbags and now, almost 6 months after buying the book, I am quite proficient with a 3 ball cascade, making a few catches with a 4 ball fountain, and I've been bought juggling clubs!
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get into juggling, for fun or sport, it's simple to use and fun to follow along with. The only thing I do not like is that the book's format makes you wish it was spiral bound or bound in a way it can easily be laid flat.
great dealer.......2007-01-10
This person is a great dealer with fast prompt service. Would buy from again.
Excellent For Beginners.......2006-08-04
Within an hour of getting this book, I was able to juggle ( though not skillfully at all)three balls. Granted, I've had a little bit of prior juggling experience from years and years ago, so I wasn't totally unfamiliar with the motions. The instructions were very clear and so were the illustrations after I used a hi-liter to keep track of the otherwise black and white balls.

Book Description
This is the flagship Klutz book -- over two million copies sold, and every one of them packaged with three aerodynamically-sound bean bags. It's the book that taught a nation how to juggle.
Customer Reviews:
Fun!.......2004-05-06
I love this book. Klutz breaks down the art of juggling. Step by step, in easy to follow directions, you are shown how to juggle.
But then it is up to you to work work work at it! I've been trying this for a while and am so close to getting it right. What fun it is to learn a new skill! Soon I picture myself picking up precious objects and, without worry, flinging them through the air in nice arcs. In the meantime, I'll continue to use the handy bean bags Klutz so kindly provides.
Klutz taught my Mom to juggle, my Dad to juggle and probably nearly everyone else in the world who knows how to juggle to juggle!
Really Does Help.......2003-11-16
I used this handy book to learn juggling as a kid. Like riding a bicycle, I can, more than a few years later, still pick up three small objects and juggle away. As another reviewer noted, the book is rather slight, but it does include all the essentials for getting started. It's a nice little investment for learning an unusual and entertaing skill; just make sure you have the patience to put in the hours you'll likely need to master the basics.
Buy it for the bean bags.......2003-06-03
This is a nice little book, but the real value is that you get a decent set of juggling bean bags for a good price. The book does a nice job explaining the basic moves of juggling but the truth is that this all could be condensed to just a page or two. The majority of the book is a lot of filler; for example, the step in the learning process which dictates that you drop all the balls directly onto the floor. Other sections ramble needlessly about irrelevant topics, and there's a large section dedicated to juggling clubs (like bowling pins) which isn't very practical for a beginner, especially since clubs are expensive and not included with the book.
Certainly the book achieves what it claims to do, namely present a detailed description of the process of juggling, but this is no magic pill. Even after reading the book and learning the very simple steps required to juggle, the real work remains. The important points of the book, if you can discern them from amongst the many extraneous details, can be digested in ten or fifteen minutes. But it will take several hours of practice-- the book wisely recommends frequent but short practice sessions-- to see any real results.
The good news is that with a little dedication and a little coordination, anyone can learn to juggle. The learning process is frustrating at times, and the book really doesn't make it any less so, but at least you'll know you're doing it the right way. The included bean bags have a nice feel and a good weight, which certainly helps, and they alone make the book a worthwhile purchase.
If you want to learn to juggle, this is the book for you!!.......2002-12-07
I'm buying this book for my 9 year old cousin because I used it to learn to juggle when I was her age. This book takes you step by step through the process and ACTUALLY WORKS!! I can still juggle to this day and it always impresses people!! You do need to dedicate some time to this, but it's alot of fun, and helps you get coordinated! I recommend this book to anyone!

Devil Sticks: For the Complete Klutz.......2002-12-09
This book has very little pratical information about devilsticks. All of the line drawings are ok except they do not show movement of the devilsticks. My kid did not understand it and was asking question the book did not answer.
One Trick at a Time.......2001-12-25
Perfect for beginners. Though it is a beginner's book you probably will not learn all the tricks right away. Starts with the basics and moves on to the intermediate level. Illustrations show step by step to learning devil sticks.
The Devilstick Book.......2000-05-14
The book has very little in the way of tricks and a history that is incorect and goes off and doesent tell me much about Devilsticks.
The BOOK was great, but............1999-02-23
I've been doing sticks for years, and I thought the book was fantastic, but the sticks themselves are the worst I've ever seen, they vibrate when you try to juggle them, so you drop them a lot. Plus in the first 2 minutes (No exageration) one of the hand sticks broke. not the best constuction. The book on the other hand was fantastic, with a better set of sticks, this would be a top notch set.

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully evocative.......1999-02-03
Lois's pictures, seen here through good reproductions, are evocative of the spirit of the chinese land and it's people. Her pictures which we learn are platinum prints posess a quality that is ethereal. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in a striking personal vision of the world. This would make a great gift for any number of special occasions. PS you mispelled the artist's name.
