The graffiti phenomenon taking place in urban America has erupted into a full scale war. The main weapons: aerosol spray paint versus hundreds of taxpayer-funded abatements programs. To the graffiti writer, graffiti is a secret language, an empowering form of self-expression, a screaming voice against an unjust, alienating society. To the upholders of social law and order, graffiti is "vandalism," an ugly and terrifying threat to social value, which cost U.S. taxpayers four billion dollars in 1995.

For two years, beginning in the fall of 1994, Michael Walsh immersed himself in the graffiti world of the San Francisco Bay Area. He took thousands of photographs, frequented train yards, went on all-night "bombing runs" with graffiti writers, prowled the Muni train tunnels at 3a.m., rode with graffiti abatement crews, spoke with small business owners who are frequent targets of graffiti, and tracked down key city officials and personnel directly involved with graffiti removal.

This powerful book delivers a raw, in-your-face account of this complex and controversial subject. It contains nearly 200 photographs, and quotes from over fifty interviews regarding both sides of the issue, and dispels many of the media-generated myths concerning graffiti. This book is still powerful and fresh after it's release 10 years ago. Awesome photography! Cool layouts. For me the best part is all the quotes and interviews from the graffiti artists and cops, etc. Buy this book if you want to see some fine SF graffiti.

Hits the Mark.......2002-05-21

Great book on the SF graffiti scene. Excellent photography in color and black and white. There are also many interviews from graffiti writers and abatement people. These interviews really help understand what's beyond the writing on the wall. Walsh did a great job with the book design. A must for anyone's art book collection or anyone interested on the deeper issues of the graffiti scene.

Buy this book! It can't be beat for it's rich content of interviews, and great photographs and graphics. This book gets down and deep in the SF graffiti scene. Covers both sides of the issue very well. A real honest portrayal by an outsider.

Awesome book! This book has great insight on the graffiti scene in the Bay Area. The quotes from the graffiti writers and the people trying to stop them are powerful and honest.
Great photos and design layout. The black and whites really capture the mood and intensity of what graffiti is all about. Highly recomended!

Knocked me out!.......2001-01-19

Wow! This book is a graphic and photographic bonanza. It gets down to what the writers think and feel and there's also comments and quotes from the law. Even though the text is difficult to read in a few places it fits in with the rawness of the subject matter. The interview quotes are great. Walsh takes this subject and puts his take on it from both an artistic and journalistic point of view. His dynamic interpretation with great black and whites and graphics make this book sing and a real collector's item for anyone who appreciates experimental book design. Walsh is definitely on to something with his new exciting brand of photojournalism. Reliable sources tell me that he's been working in Taiwan for a few years and now putting together a documentary photography book on Taiwanese culture. I'll be waiting for it.

This one-act play, by Jeff Lahr, is ideal for middle schools. It addresses many issues that young adolscents face: such as public acceptence, peer pressure and social responsibility. The play is set up as a humorous mystery as a class tries to solve how is vandalizing the school.

This collection of translated passages on painting techniques is taken from six seventeenth-century treatises written in Spain and Portugal by Nunes, Corducho, Pacheco, Hidalgo and Velasco. The title of Woody Allen's second collection of New Yorker-style sprint humor is a sly comment on Emily Dickinson's famous quote, "Hope is the thing with feathers." Without Feathers delivers Allen's hopeless schlub persona--you remember, what he used to be before he was either a lecher or an auteur, depending on your politics. In addition to being as funny as anything published since, to read Without Feathers is to return to a simpler time, when being a fan of his work was common, not controversial.

Though each piece is funny, two of them are particularly notable examples of Allen's distinctive style (borrowed in large part from S.J. Perelman by way of the Borscht Belt, but distinctive, nevertheless)--"The Whore of Mensa" and "If the Impressionists Had Been Dentists." Here's an excerpt from the latter:

Mrs. Sol Schwimmer is suing me because I made her bridge as I felt it and not to fit her ridiculous mouth! That's right! I can't work to order like a common tradesman! I decided her bridge should be enormous and billowing, with wild, explosive teeth flaring up in every direction like fire! Now she is upset because it won't fit in her mouth! She is so bourgeois and stupid, I want to smash her! I tried forcing the false plate in but it sticks out like a star burst chandelier.

May Be Without Feathers, But Its with Humor.......2007-08-14

Without Feathers, by Woody Allen, is a witty humorous book with 15 or so short essays/stories on a variety of topics. The humor here is very funny and not dated at all. You most pay close attention as the one-liners fly off the pages. Simply hilarious stuff. Hard to believe this was released in 1975.

A recommended 4 star effort!

Well worth buying and reading. Reading a humor book of short stories by one author all at once is not as good as spacing each story by reading something else. Too much like eating three desserts at once.

...worth the read!!! Allen's book is composed of a bunch of short stories, plots for operas, essays, plays etc. It's all hilarious. Once you start the book, you wont be able to put it down.

Wonderfully absurd..........2005-01-23

I have never written a review before, but as this book is one of the funniest things I've ever stumbled upon... here goes. I was lucky enough to find Without Feathers about 10 years ago, in a hardcover edition along with Getting Even and Side Effects. I decided to take a quick look through it on the drive home from the book store (I was'nt the one driving!) and within minutes I was laughing uncontrolably! After the first paragraph I simply could'nt put it down. The other people in the car demanded to know what was so funny, but my attempts to read out loud were useless as I was crying with laughter and could no longer see the page!?! I handed the book over to one of my friends for him to read, and eventually we had to pull the car off the road due to the histerical giggling that ensued! "A Brief, Yet Helpful, Guide To Civil Disobedience" is possibly the funniest thing I've ever read!?! A decade has gone by since I first read these books and they are still as funny and unique. I read them whenever I'm dangerously close to forgeting how cathartic sheer silliness can be! Truly joyful prose!

Classic Allen.......2003-08-29

I was recommended this book because of the play "Death." I found the two plays to be much funnier than some of the short stories and essays. The short stories are written in the older style of Allen's humor. They are funny because Allen is constantly using unexpected silly plot twists. I found these silly twists to be a bit much at times. However, if you like his older movies then you will probably like the way he writes the short stories. The plays were, I thought, much more clever. They were still silly (of course) but they had more continuity than the short stories. In addition the unexpected still occurred frequently but it seems more in context, in the plays.

Regardless, this book is very funny and if you like Allen's movies, then you'll definitely find this book funny as well.

Bill Harry thoroughly details all of McCartney's songs, records, tours, friends, pets, studios, producers and charities. It includes wonderful biographies of Linda and Heather Mills McCartney. You can learn about his many animal rights endeavors, his vegetarianism and numerous other charitable causes that he promotes. Every other Paul McCartney book is utterly incomplete. Bill Harry's comprehensive research is laudable, commendable and a must buy for any Paul McCartney fan.

Useful Resource.......2001-01-08

As a Canadian I usually read and advocate Canadian authors especially in the area of multiculturalism as it affects education. Why? Because CANADA is the only country in the world that proclaims MULTICULTURALISM AS NATIONAL LAW. However, I found this book very valuable in gaining a perspective on multiculturalism as it has developed in Anglophone countries around the world (I'm not sure why Volk includes Germany here though).

If you are doing research on multiculturalism and the arts in education, I highly recommend this book for a historical perspective on the topic. Volk is thorough and well read and remains as truthful and to the point at possible when discussing such blatant dichotomies that exist in the American psyche as world promotion of peace in association with the UN whilst maintaining racism and desegregation at home.

Finally a challenge!.......2007-02-12

Seems like all the books claim to be impossible and I bought the "Mensa" book for my wife and she just laughed at it. With this book, you don't have to skip to the back to get to the good ones. From puzzle one we were happy and the only let down is knowing that when you finish this book, you may be out of luck on finding one to compare. As others have mentioned at first you might need to make one guess to solve the puzzles.

Consistently interesting challenges.......2006-11-26

Most sudoku books have a lot of very easy and boring puzzles in them. This book is uniformly strong. It's not impossible at all. I never had much trouble solving any of the puzzles, but they are all pretty challenging. A typical puzzle in this book required me to take one guess, and be ready to erase everything after the guess, if necessary, and go back and follow the other route. This book is exactly what it claims to be, if you change the word "impossible" to "interesting". It's a lot better than most other sudoku books out there because they are just too damn easy.
