Book Description
From its roots in the development of printing, graphic design has evolved as a means of identification, information, and promotion to become a profession and discipline in its own right. This authoritative documentary history begins with the poster and goes on to chart the development of word and image in brochures and magazines, advertising, corporate identity, television, and electronic media, and the impact of technical innovations such as photography and the computer. For the revised edition, a new final chapter covers all the recent international developments in graphic design, including the role of the computer and the Internet in design innovation and globalization. In the last years of the twentieth century, at a time when "designer products" and the use of logos grew in importance, the role of graphic designers became more complex, subversive, and sometimes more politicalwitness Oliviero Toscani's notorious advertisements for Benetton. Digital technology cleared the way for an astonishing proliferation of new typefaces, and words began to take second place to typography in a whole range of magazines and books as designers asserted the primacy of their medium. Designers and companies discussed here include Neville Brody, David Carson, Design Writing Research, Edward Fella, Tibor Kalman, Jeffery Keedy, LettError, Pierre di Sciullo, Tomato, Gerard Unger, Cornel Windlin, and a host of others. Over 800 illustrations, 30 in color.
Customer Reviews:
small book .......2007-01-10
The type (copy) and the book itself are really small and hard to read. It's more like a pocket size handbook. I should have done more research before I purchased; I made the inaccurate assumption that art/design books are usually larger in scale. I can't comment on the content of the book because the size of it was such an impediment I stopped reading after a few chapters.
A must read..........2005-07-07
for design students. The book gives a complete analysis of the graphic design's history.
follow the arrow.......2000-08-31
insightful, full of samples (about 800 though largely black & white) a great guide to graphic styles, and the key movers & shakers in the history of graphic design right through from the 1890s to the 1990s.
a huge resource for such a little book, definately worth reading if not just to look at the pictures...
Great reference for Graphic Design history........1998-03-26
This is an excellent guide to the history of graphic design. I really enjoyed reading
this insightful view of graphic design. It has lots of useful information on the history
of graphic design from early posters to the electronic age. I have found this as a good
book for my study as an art student. I would recomend this to anyone interested in
graphic design history or if you are thinking of the graphic arts industry.

Customer Reviews:
Not much help.......2006-08-21
I read through this book within a half hour, largely because many of the topics were nonapplicable to me. Because of my type of school and the kind of choices I make, a lot of the advice will never be relevant since I won't be in those situations; i.e. one night stands, keggers, etc. Many of the suggestions are dishonest solutions to situations in which you should just suck it up and at least pretend to be an adult, ineffective and unacceptable to professors (such as fake crying to get something or blaming a broken alarm clock for missed class), or just pathetic (mailing laundry home - how hard is it to throw clothes and cleaner into a machine and wait?). However, if getting wasted is a primary goal of college for you, then this book may be helpful. Its layout is convinient because it doesn't waste your time with filler. Overall, I didn't find this book very helpful or relevant.
pretty good.......2005-09-11
very true to life, points out the humor while still giving tactful advice
A Good Worst-Case Scenario Book for Your College Student.......2005-08-23
If you've never read a Worst-Case Scenario book before, read one. Each one is highly irreverent in its own way. This one has practical advice like "How to Ask Your Parents for Money" and "How to Avoid Going to the Wrong College", but also has goofy sections like "How to Put Out a Microwave Fire".
Even the goofy sections have practical advice, although hopefully your college student will never have to use it.
These books are a lot of fun. Check out the others, also.
Most useful; Most enoyable.......2004-06-18
Hysterical and practical! The book was easy to read and actually has come in handy in the crazy years of college
What teachers' don't tell you........2004-04-27
I felt this book was a fairly quick read. I read it in one night.
Its funny, and gives you many good tips from how to choose the perfect mattress to how to avoid the walk of shame.
A lot of it were some good points how to know if your school is right for you, when are the best days for visiting.
If you were to read this book I would reccommend spending an hour at Barnes and Nobles and reading. I mean its good, but that $14 could have been spent somewhere else.
Product Description
Relive and thrill to the science fiction movies of the 50s (through 1962), when jujubes and popcorn with extra butter went arm and arm with mad women (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman), weird teenagers (I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, Teenage Zombies), ill-fated matches (I Married a Monster from Outer Space), victims of scientific experiments (The Fly), and all those things that kept dropping in from outer space (The Blob, The Brain Eaters). As Warren meticulously and unfailingly points out, special effects were infantile (They fall into a huge spider web which strongly resembles a cargo net, Earth vs. The Spider), budgets incredibly small (As Jack Moffitt noted, the giant spaceman must be a fugitive from medieval France since, on his chest, he wears a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis. On his back, is an Assyrian bull, indicating he may have had his cleaning, pressing and mending done in Babylon, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman). From The Astounding She-Monster, another small budget reminder: In the first day of filming, the She-Monster bent over to kill one of the characters and ripped (her) suit in the back ... so in all subsequent scenes, the She-Monster makes exits and entrances facing the camera. Of course, this means she is walking backward much of the time, but aliens are weird. The book is filled with witty, fanatically in-depth critiques, with insider anecdotes. In addition to detailed plot synopses and production data, Warren cites good and bad reviews from the period, then adds his own analysis of how the film stands up after two or three decades. Credits add to and correct other published sources. Fantastic photographs, drawings, appendices and index are included.

the way things were.......2007-06-09
do you ever wonder about the old days? how people thought about space and time, and oh yes, giant monster bugs? then look no further than this fine and funny volume. from 1950 to 1962, warren covers the best to the worst with a wry sense of humor and a clear love for the subject. almost everything is covered, from obscure jungle movies, to elaborate space epics. if you want to know about these old films, and have a laugh or two, then by all means pick up this book.
Best reference book of it's kind!.......2007-05-15
Bill Warren is obviously very knowledgeable concerning classic science fiction films, having spent a lifetime researching the subject. "Keep Watching the Skies" is not only factually accurate, it is also extremely entertaining to read.
Highly recommended for all fans of the genre.
A Monumental Work of Epic Proportions.......2006-08-18
If you're a fan, or even a casual watcher, of science fiction movies of the 1950s and early 1960s, this exhaustively researched, 2-1/4-inch-thick tome deserves a prominent place in your library. It is, quite simply, THE definitive reference book on the subject. Period. There is none better. The conscientious reviewer MIGHT point out only one minor "problem"--but more on that later.
Mr. Warren does an unbelievably thorough job of presenting the most minute details of virtually every American science fiction film produced from 1950 through 1962. The classics are all here, of course. "Destination Moon," "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "The Thing From Another World," "Forbidden Planet," "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "War of the Worlds" each receive 10 or so pages of treatment (in very small, closely spaced print, mind you). Mr. Warren tells you everything you could ever want to know about the script, the director, the actors, the special effects (such as they were, in those days), the budget, the editing, the musical score and the reception that each movie got on its initial release. He includes meaningful, interesting details and fascinating anecdotes, many of which I can't imagine how he managed to dig up. Lesser films such as (to pick a couple at random) "Mesa of Lost Women" and "The Rocket Man" get only a page or so, but still with full discussions of each film's production and how it fits into the genre. Well-chosen still photos, typically printed in full-page size and in many cases not the same ones seen in other books, illustrate some of the movies.
I found that the best way to use Mr. Warren's monumental work is to refer to it just after watching one of the films that it covers (which means ANY science fiction movie of the era). With the screenplay fresh in one's mind, reading the relevant chapter adds immeasurably to the viewing experience, much as a director's commentary does on a DVD. You can, of course, read "Keep Watching The Skies" through from cover-to-cover, but only at the risk of information overload. Its usefulness is sure to last for many years--as long as there are VHS tapes, DVDs or (if you're very lucky) old 35mm prints of classic science fiction movies to watch and enjoy. It adds new meaning to the term "reference book."
Now, for the one and only "problem" with "Keep Watching The Skies." The book consists of two parts. Part 1 covers the years 1950 through 1957; Part 2 covers 1958 through 1962. Both parts were apparently once issued as separate volumes. For this reissue, both volumes are bound together. Each part has a comprehensive index, but ONLY for that part. Thus, it can be a little difficult to find a specific film if you don't know its year of release, especially since many films in Part 1 are referred to--and thus indexed--in Part 2, and vice versa. A single integrated index would make Mr. Warren's magnum opus much easier to use. With that single tiny quibble aside, I give "Keep Watching The Skies" the highest possible recommendation. Five stars is not nearly enough. It deserves a galaxy of stars.
Great!.......2006-03-18
The best science fiction book I have ever read.A must-have for everyone fond of golden age movies and classic science fiction.
I read the book in one go.I wish I could read another book like this!
Like taking a class in "Classic Sci Fi Movies".......2004-02-07
And I mean that in a good way because if you're a B-movie science fiction fan, this will be your favorite "class". Bill Warren's magnus opus, "Keep Watching the Skies" is THE definite reference book on the science fiction movies made in the 1950's and into the early '60s. It is an inexhaustive review of every good, bad, and ugly movie from those two decades. Extensive research is at the heart of the book. This is an author who is seriously in love with this genre'. Warren has gleaned numerous unknown tidbits about the actors, sets, budgets, etc. from these great, but often underappreciated, B-movies.
Classic science fiction movie fans will be totally absorbed by the book. Best read in small chunks, it's almost impossible to put down! Warren not only provides an interesting and honest narrative of each of the films, but adds a chonological list of when the films were distributed and gives a separate synopsis of the films' plots, actors, directors, etc., in a different section of the book. A great index is available and can be of tremendous help when you're watching a midnight sci fi movie fest and can't remember that particular actor's name.
By all means, buy the 1997 printing of the book because it contains both volumes (1950-57 and 1958-62). It's a steal at any price.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Customer Reviews:
Lost book.......2005-10-01
I have not recieved this product yet, therefore I cannot review it yet.
Useful Information.......2003-06-18
Given that .hack//MUTATION is a fairly linear game of only moderate complexity, writing a strategy guide must be a special challenge. Many publishers would give into the temptation to fill the guide with great numbers of screen shots and side stories in an effort to make a collectors item out of what would otherwise be a thin effort. For some reason, BradyGames rarely gives into that temptation, and this guide is a classic example of providing all the needed information without burying it in glitz.
They provide a straightforward and complete walkthrough, plenty of information on side quests, and all the usual weapon and monster details. Maps are provided where needed, and, yes, there still is room for plenty of screen shots. They are especially good at detailing the moves necessary to deal with the game's deadly bosses. And grunty races as well - although nothing could save me from my inept reflexes.
I am not sure if a guide is necessary for playing .hack//MUTATION, but if you like them as I do, you will find that this guide delivers everything it should in useful form. There are two more of these still to come in the series though, so you may want to wait until you are legitimately stumped.
Do not buy this!.......2003-05-23
This guide is horrible! Okay, the walkthrough is decent, but who needs a walkthrough for this game? Seriously... this game is very straightforward. The best reason to get a guide for it is for weapon, item, and monster lists. This book is very incomplete. While there are at least a hundred new weapons and pieces of armor, this book only lists about fifteen. The monster lists are also very bad, many monsters are missing, and for the ones that ARE listed, the items they drop are not. Bradygames posted updated weapon/armor lists on their website, but they are still missing all of the rare weapons in the game as well as the monster info. A very rushed book, not worth your cash. You're better off just finding a FAQ online.
