Reccomended by the accidental quilter.......2000-08-12
If you love Hawaiian quilting--this is a volume you shouldn't miss. This is not a "how to" manual. It is a history of classic Hawaiin quilts accompanied by color plates that left me spellbound. The designs are incredible and well worth study. I've held a fascination with the possible direct connection between early Hawaiian quilts and the Baltimore Album quilts of the the Eastern coast. This may be the only book with color plates of some of these beautiful early quilts that would offer clues to this connection. My favorite designs in this volume are Anthurium by Mary Manoi and Coconut and Pineapple by Meali'i Kalama. It is of no consequence to me that this is not an instructional manual as I do not anticipate ever being able to quilt one of these masterpieces. It is, however, a one of a kind book and I urge you to treat yourself while it remains in print. Mary Z. Cox

Book Description
With a gimlet eye and scathingly accurate descriptions, Food Court Druids, Cherohonkees, and Other Creatures Unique to the Republic is a hilarious collection of newly classified yet instantly recognizable archetypes sure to enter the mainstream lexicon. From the office TGIF (the overgrown frat boy in the office who always says party) to the Lieberal (a Democrat with Republican sympathies), from Uncle Tomatoes (Italians who hate The Sopranos) to Cherohonkees (white Baby Boomers who dress like Native Americans), each profile offers a detailed description of everything from sex appeal and favorite pick-up lines to popular names and habitats. The result is both a brilliant parody and thorough outing of just about every neurosis, attribute, and personality type there is.

Everyone gets a label, even you "Mr. Man Trying to Avoid a Label".......2006-03-14
Funny character sketches matched with quirk-capturing drawings -- a perfect combo. This book can open your eyes to the world of fruits and freaks that surround you. In fact, you may be one and not know it! If you have ever noticed a certain odd type of person around town but can't find the right words to describe them, this book is for you.
Food Court Druids, Cherohonkees and Other Creatures Unique to the Republic.......2006-02-25
It thought it was more clever than it was. Same goes for the humor.
a new sociology text for this day and age.......2005-10-13
SO I found myself a mix of the Hexpatriate and the CROW. Not that this is a bad thing.
Insightful and damn funny! If you own a new Volvo and go jogging with your golden retriever every morning, AND shop at Crate and Barrel, you will be offended. If you smoke American Spirits and chastise people for not buying all organic food, you will be offended. If you use any Tom's of Maine product and wear toe rings, you will be offended. If you can't laugh at yourself, you will be offended.
It is a glorious book.
The illustraor, Jeff Bechtel, is my new hero. His drawings are RIGHT ON.
hilarous and smart.......2005-06-10
I love this book. it's clever, funny, and wonderfully not PC. Lanham is hilarious.
Not for the easily offended.......2005-03-31
This is a hilarious book, if you are not easily offeneded! Offered up at the begining this book claims that you or someone you know may be included, and they take shots at everyone. If you want some hilarious commentary on your strange coworkers or disgruntled neighbors, pick this up. If you like to pretend that you have no oddities in your personality whatsoever, maybe look else where, because this book will point out what you may secretly fear, your strange. Good travel book, and you may be tempted to copy out sections and email them to your friends with notes like, 'Remember Ms. Montgomery?!'

One Hand Clapping.......2005-02-01
I apologize up front to those who can't stand anything negative, but hey, someone has to speak up and make all you positive types feel superior, right?
First let me say I enjoyed the book. If you love movies, you will also enjoy the book. It did need a good editor, though, as it had misspellings, repetition, bad grammar and even attributed FDR's famous "fear" quote to Churchill. Do you think I'm a bad person for pointing that out? Then you're a bad person for having thought that. Ha!
Lastly, its unrelenting positive tone drove me a little bananas. Why? It did not reflect life and so Stephen Simon did not feel authentic. I don't think life on Earth is ever going to be 100% positive. Why? Because life would die. One hand clapping produces nothing but silence. We humans happen to have two hands. For those of us who are not saints nor are aspiring to be, there is good and bad. Yeah, it's all relative, but hey, it's a structure that helps you keep your balance. Don't take it all so seriously. To read a book in which nothing but good things are said about everybody, with the usual (and constant) Hollywood adjectives: amazing, unbelievable, wonderful, fantastic, etc., is to find one's teeth suddenly coated up with sugar and gagging on it.
You can say that someone did a bad job without condemning them, can't you? You can point out that someone made a mistake without wanting to throw them away, right? This is Earth, folks. It's all about context. We have sunshine and rain. We also have drought and floods. To point out these latter conditions does not make you negative or unspiritual. But we are in the movie business so we don't want to offend anyone. Fine. Here's your heads up. With this book you'll find yourself in a rowboat with only one oar. You'll go in circles, but will still enjoy the ride.
Finding Spiritual Meaning in Cinema.......2003-04-13
Hallelujah! We finally have a book that's dedicated to covering the newly emerging category of spiritual cinema! THE FORCE IS WITH YOU is written by Hollywood insider Stephen Simon, who writes straight from his heart about the significant messages in more than 70 movies. Spiritual Cinema is all about exploring the meaning of love, life, death, time, and space -- which are the topics I most enjoy seeing in the movies. Most of my favorite movies are included here: The Matrix, Sliding Doors, Somewhere in Time, The Kid, Frequency, Star Wars, Lost Horizon, The Sixth Sense, Ghost, What Dreams May Come, Defending Your Life, Groundhog Day, Contact, Phenomenon, Powder, Being There, The Truman Show, Sleepless in Seattle, Family Man, and It's A Wonderful Life.
What I love best about THE FORCE IS WITH YOU is the way it so clearly conveys a sense of hope, inspiration, and purposefulness about the way humanity learns about its worst fears and greatest hopes through stories. Yes, we love to vividly imagine the end of the world... but we also love to dream of ways we can find solutions to our biggest problems. We know that it's not easy being more spiritually and psychically evolved... but we love to imagine how those of us who are different can be accepted in mainstream society.
THE FORCE IS WITH YOU is priceless for clarifying what the new genre of "Spiritual Cinema" is all about, and for providing an inspiring list of the most spiritual movies of all time. It is my deepest hope that this book will help establish awareness in film-makers everywhere of the importance of making spiritual movies, as it helps movie-goers better understand the significance of the movies they see.
The Force is with Spiritual Cinema........2003-02-15
Stephen Simon's book is an inspiring read. Right from the beginning, you realize that this author, a producer and film executive with over twenty-five years experience in the Hollywood arena, is writing from the heart. He is passionate about awakening us to the spiritual cinema genre, movies that contain spiritual messages. Although this is a genre as yet not recognized by Hollywood, Simon maintains that these movies already exist, and indeed have done so for quite some time. He takes us on an entertaining, intimate, thought provoking and often humourous journey through a personal selection of seventy or so such films. Rest assured that this is not a book that critiques film, rather it illuminates. Perhaps Neale Donald Walsch says it best in his forward to the book: "If you love movies, you're going to love this book. If you love life, you're going to adore it. And if you love a good story, get set, because you're about to hear some great ones." I thoroughly loved reading "The Force is With You", and I think you will too.
The force is with you........2003-02-07
THE FORCE IS WITH YOU
THE FORCE IS WITH YOU is a mesmerizing account of what it's like to be a movie producer. Besides sharing his own stories, Stephen Simon has written a thought provoking analogy of over 70 movies and the mystical messages he found in them.
Who will cherish this book? Movie lovers; people pursuing spiritual growth; anyone interested in any aspect of movie making... anyone...
I believe it was Mr. Simon's unquenchable love for humanity and the planet kept him going against all odds. The word "no" is unrecognizable in his consciousness. Oh - he's heard the word all right, more than most people. His heart has been shattered over and over, but love pieced it back together and motivated him on the relentless pursuit of his dreams. Did you know, for instance, that "What Dreams May Come" was 20 years in the making? Twenty years! And that "Somewhere In Time" bombed when it came out in theaters? Read the haunting and amazing story of how it resurrected itself and became one of the best loved
films of all times.
Stephen Simon is a visionary. The human race is evolving rapidly now and movies are one of the most profound tools we have to assist our evolution. Mr. Simon is forging a path for the genre of mystical movies (a genre Hollywood has not recognized). He discusses the industry and where he sees it heading.
Read this book. But be prepared to cry, to laugh, to be inspired and to grow in consciousness.
...
Look Closer.......2002-11-25
Author Stephen Simon writes an excellent book about spiritualism and the messages in movies; movies that speak to the emotional context of a person's soul. I realized that the messages Mr. Simon writes about the very things that I found missing in most mainstream films. (Thank God I live in city where art houses exist, but I realize not everyone has that luxury) Finally someone was able to show that there is more going on up on the big screen than what meets the eye. Every movie that he writes about in his book is in some way or another a winner, regardless of what it did in box office receipts. Still this book is a lot more than just a much of plot synopsis and message of some really great movies. Mr. Simon writes about his life growing up in movie industry. His battle to get both "Somewhere in Time" and "What Dreams May Become" (both based on books by author Richard Matheson-a great writer himself) made into films. His elation of getting both films made and then watching as the critics ripped both of them both apart , only to become resurrected and warmly welcomed on cable, video and DVD by thousands of people years later. Plus, his very telling reasoning on why mainstream movies have to stay "commercial," he writes volumes in a few pages that will generate debate for years to come. Whatever your spiritual beliefs, I think there is something in this book for every movie lover.
This is new movement and a new way of thinking about movies and I'll gladly be in the front row watching as those beautiful, special images and messages flicker over me.

Sassy Sarah Vaughan!.......2007-04-11
I hope Sarah Vaughan will be inducted in the inaugural New Jersey Hall of Fame for her services to Arts and Entertainment. It might be a few years but I think Sassy Sarah is well worth the wait. The biography is detailed but not enough in my opinion. Sassy Sarah had an amazing life as a singer and entertainer. Even though she smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, it never affected her voice. Her love of music kept her going until her dying day. I would have liked to learn more about the professional relationship between Quincy Jones and Sassy Sarah. Her personal life was typical of successful artists who don't know how to handle their money or finances. In the end, Sassy Sarah left an amazing legacy. She is the pride of Newark, New Jersey. I hoped that my students would have enjoyed her music or experienced her greatness but sadly Sarah Vaughan's legacy seems all but forgotten in her hometown. There is a street named after her but it's very small. She is buried nearby in Bloomfield, New Jersey.
I would love to see somebody like Queen Latifah bring Sassy Sarah Vaughan to life on stage, in a television special, or film. I bet this fellow New Jerseyan would have a mantelful of awards for her performance. Sarah Vaughan was one of the great singers of the last century and everybody in Newark should know the voice and the name.
Adequate.......2003-09-30
While Gourse's biography of the Divine One traverses Vaughan's life decade by decade, it does so in a very cursory way, so if you know anything at all of Vaughan's life, you've probably already been exposed to most of the contents of this biography. While this book is decent in its cursory examination of Vaughan's life and her wonderful contributions to American and world music, one doesn't go away from this book feeling he or she has encountered Vaughan on an intimate level...the Devil's in the details, but it seems as though many of the details that would have allowed for an ampler and fuller study of Vaughan on a quotidian level were not provided. There are some interesting photographs of Vaughan, her family, her friends, her coterie of fans and colleagues, included in this biography, but those pictures should have been in bold, beautiful color, full pages, allowing the reader to see the vagaries of Vaughan in all her glamour, sophistication, and wit. One will learn more from listening to Vaughan's vast recording history. Still, this book will be of interest to Sass's devoted fans.
Kim Lehmann.......2003-09-12
I just finished reading this book. I've been a Sarah Vaughan fan for many years and I've even met her briefly once at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. As this is the only biography of her, I suppose that I can't really trash it because I'm so grateful somebody wrote one. Nonetheless, it doesn't have nearly enough detail for me, and it gives very little insight into how she developed such incredible vocal talents and why she didn't become more famous as she deserved to be. It's an interesting read, however, for any Sarah Vaughan fan, who, like me, is hungry for information about her. Because she gave so few interviews, I guess it's difficult to really get into her head and this book doesn't do a particularly good job at helping the reader to really understand or know Sarah Vaughan. The chapter covering her illness is sparse at best, and as an African American singer, I would like to know more of how it was for a young Black woman to make her way to the top of her field in such a competitive and male dominated environment. The book touches on these issues sporadically, but certainly doesn't attempt to analyze it or answer any questions the reader may have about it. After reading this book, I have a bit more knowledge about Sarah Vaughan, but I must say that she remains an enigma. Perhaps that's not the fault of the writer, but maybe some people just can't be known. Sarah Vaughan was known to detest interviews and was apparently very private and shy. Perhaps she will always be an enigma. Her singing talent certainly was. I can only hope that more and better biographies are on the way.

International grandmaster Yasser Seirawan has a knack for communicating not only the playing of the game, but also an enthusiasm for it. In this first of a four part series, Seirawan talks to the chess novice. He explains the game's development and basics of play, sharing stories of some of the wild and wonderful characters from chess history and Seirawan's own experiences. The language is simple and nontechnical enough for the greenest newcomer, who will hardly seem green at all after absorbing the lessons of this terrific introduction to chess.
Book Description
An introduction to the moves, strategies, and philosophy of chess, with clear explanations of the games fundamentals, instructive examples, question-and-answer sections, sample games, and psychological hints.
Customer Reviews:
really good book.......2007-04-25
this book (in the category of general chess books) is second only to My System by Nimzowitsch. It is easy enough for beginners, but it can also help more advanced players. It covers important principles in chess and has examples. I haven't read the other books in the series, but i've heard they are great also (except for his chess openings book). Warning: you will need a chess board and a knowledge of chess notation to use this book.
I am friends with 2 National Masters, an International Master, and a Grandmaster so if you have any questions about good chess literature email me : planohawkeye@gmail.com and ill ask them for you.
Understand the principles, don't memorise the rules.......2007-01-04
My chess "career" started 20 years ago as a child. However, like many people, it stagnated. I got to a certain point, and then got bogged down in trying to learn opening sequences and just ran out of steam and got bored. I was under the impression that to play chess well, you had to have a great memory to remember all those opening variations.
Yasser Seirawan tells us different. He introduces 4 concepts - Force, Time, Space and Pawn structure. Playing with these principles in mind, memory is not required. In a very friendly and conversational style used throughout this book, Yasser relates a story from when he was young. His opponent was playing his first moves really fast, and Yasser struggled to maintain equality. However, by the time the middle game arrived, they were "out of the book", and Yasser quickly dispatched him, using these principles.
This book is a very good introduction to the game of chess. It covers the basic rules in the first 38 pages and then quickly moves onto the 4 principles. Another interesting facet of the book is that it is dotted with historical references and anecdotes about some of the legendary Grandmasters of the game.
Highly recommended. I have already ordered his next book in this series, "Winning Chess Tactics"
Good for someone who already knows the basic rules.......2006-12-26
This is NOT to be recommended for someone who is learning from scratch. It moves along way to quickly and gets to running before you have learned walk. Then why does it get a good rating of 4 stars?
This is a "good" book for someone who knows how the pieces move, knows the very basics of strategy and wants nothing more than a brief primer on anything before that, yet wants to get to the next parts of strategy. It doesn't overly focus on one area so it is a rather general book and a little difficult to understand where the author intended to fit this into the rest of his series. If you are more of a beginner then get "Learn Chess; a complete course" by Alexander and Beach which is far superior when it comes to covering both basic rules and strategy.
Fantastic initiation book.......2006-11-10
For me that the only thing I almost knew about chess was moving its pieces this book has opened my eyes to a deeper comprehension of the game itself. From four basic principles (force, time, space and pawn structure) and on, the book gives you what I think is a good base to start playing this game in a serious way.
You won't become a GreatMaster just reading this book, but as I said before, it is a good start.
Fundamentally sound teaching for the beginning enthusiast!.......2006-11-01
If your looking to improve your game beyond the rules and piece movements, "Play Winning Chess" will guide you to the next level. Force, Time, Space, and Pawn Structure a the four basic elements of chess play that will be annotated and explained by the Grand Master himself, Yasser Seirawan. The rules and movements are also included for those who are new to the game as well. Including several tests and brainteasers to exercise your mind!
I recommended this book to start off with and if you feel your ready for more, the next book in the series should be "Winning Chess Strategies" and "Winning Chess Tactics". Followed by "Winning Chess Openings" and "Winning Chess Endings".
The knowledge i have gained from Yasser's teaching has elevated my game to a chess fanatic that loves to win or lose.

An Informative & Enjoyable Companion to the TV Series.......2001-08-16
Cold Feet may not be a typical British comedy; nevertheless, it is certainly one of the funniest. Those who find they can't get enough of this exceptionally well-directed, slightly off-beat, very modern (albeit rather racy!) comedy-drama will, I am sure, enjoy this informative and humourous companion book.
The book covers the pilot plus the first two series (the last episode of which is the millenium New Year's). Subtitled "the Best Bits," the book provides the reader with the scripts for a couple of choice scenes from each episode, and I must admit I was surprised to find just how interesting (and indeed funny) most of the scripts were to read. Additionally, the writer, directors, producer, publicist, and actors all take part in introducing the scenes.
Among the things one discovers are: how the show came about, how the characters were cast, what provided the inspiration for certain scenes, how the actors felt portraying certain scenes (ie. the "rose up the bum" scene!), and how certain effects were achieved. We are also told about the scenes in which stuntmen were used and in which writer Mike Bullen makes a cameo appearance. I should just mention, lest anyone be disappointed, that this is a book about the series and its creation. It does not, therefore, have biographies or much in the way of personal information about the actors.
Physically, the book is soft cover, but in every other way it is the quality one would expect in a hardcover. The print is large and clear, and the paper is of an excellent quality: thick with a matte finish. There is an abundance of photographs taken from the series, a few of which are full page and the vast majority of which are in colour. The cover itself is thick and glossy. There are 224 pages and the dimensions are 9 1/2" x 7 1/2".
All in all, this is a fine book and one that will probably be thumbed through frequently with the reruns. Highly recommended.
