Great views of Tudor hats and hoods!.......2006-06-02

I found this small book to be just the item I needed to help me make the most accurate Tudor period gable hoods for SCA events. The details of the portraits are quite impressive. All are done in B/W, but this actually goes a long way to show contrasting elements of various garb. This particular book is my most valuable resource (and I have quite an extensive collection!). The book is very well suited to those who would be interested in portraiture, historically based costume creation, and plain old artistic curiosity.

Great book of drawings.......2001-07-03

All of the Dover books have very good reproductions of drawings. These books are just the best deal for the money, and I use them all the time in the college where I teach to show students examples of great drawing and fantastic line. All the background an artist needs is there: size, media, year -- very little personal background; it's just a catalog of drawings (words would only slow you down anyway). There may be people who can draw as well as Holbein, but there's nobody better. His work, except for the give-away clothing, looks so modern that you could swear you've seen these people. His line and his observation are perfection. I have expensive books on him, but this book is my favorite.

RENAISSANCE PORTRAITURE AT ITS BEST.......2000-08-09

This was the third Dover Art Library book I bought; it covers the work of one of the most recognized names in Renaissance Art - Hans Holbien. If you don't recognize his name , you've probably seen one of his paintings in one of your history books back in High School. His subjects, as seen in this book, include many members of the court of Henry the VIII. As in the stylistic tradition of Renassiance portraiture, these are contour drawings, and Holbiens craftsmanship is evident in every line. If you can, I also recommend you buy his book of paintings.

John Stobart describes to us his personal life as a struggling art student through to his present life as an enormously successful maritime painter. He describes his life and passion for art with the wit and charm of a typical Englishman. He tells us of the days when he was forced to used old burlap sacks for canvases and wood discarded from construction sites for stretchers. Part one of the book explores his life in part, and his progression throughout the years. This is invaluable to a beginning artist as we learn from his mistakes. He describes the trials and tribulations of working with Galleries owners and clients in regards to their expectations of the artist. Stobart also informs us of his palette of choice and working materials for outdoor oil sketching plus more. Part two of the book discusses works of art created on site with oil sketches done by Stobart and many of his fellow friends in the art industry. Overall the book is extremely simple reading and doesn't complicate any issues at all, I recommend it as a reference book, a guide to art, and a delightfully humurous companion that can inspire the artist into creating something better for him or herslef. Supberb reading from a truly insprirational man.

Fun Reading.......2007-08-16

It took me a couple of tries to get into this book - maybe the historical period isn't of particular interest to me. I kept after it and I really did enjoy the stories.

This isn't a novel - it's a collection of stories previously published in periodicals. Don't expect a 'flow' - each story stands alone, as was the intent of the writer in writing for periodicals. The good thing about it is that you can read them story by story and put the book down not wondering what in the world happens next. The stories are entertaining and fun and short enough to read in one of those 'boredom windows' we all have - at the doctor's office, on the bus, or whenever we have to sit and wait for something.

Even Wodehouse said it.......2003-10-27

Even darling P.G. Wodehouse had said it. He did no justice whatsever to the beloved man servant Jeeves in his first story. "Extricating Young Gussie". But Wodehouse had made up for it in every other Jeeves stories that he had written. Bertie Wooster on the other hand had been well developed from the get go.

Reading the Reggie Pepper stories is a gas. I feel in love with dear ol' misguided at times Reggie from the first sentence in "Absent Treatment."

There is no way you can book "Enter Jeeves" down without fistening the story that you are on. You would just want to read the entire book in one sitting, but you know that you just want to savor the witty P.G. Wodeshouse in the book for as long as you can.

Before there was Bertie.......2000-01-18

The first half of this book contains the first Jeeves tales, as they appeared in periodicals. If you've read 'Carry on Jeeves,' there's a lot of overlap here, although the style was polished up a bit later. The second half features Reggie Pepper, Bertie's prototype. His stories are entertaining in their own right, although they can't hold a candle to later Wodehouse. Still, it's interesting to see the evolution.

An enjoyable collection of Wodehouse's works.......1999-02-27

Before purchasing this book I had only been aquainted with Wodehouse's most famous characters Bertie Wooster and his stalwart man servant, Jeeves; and I must say that it was a pleasant suprise to be introduced to Reggie Pepper. His stories frolic in as much fun as Bertie's and he is a man who can think for himself (althought I do miss the perspicatious Jeeves standing in a corner ever ready to solve all the world's problems). With a mixture of Bertie, Jeeves and Reggie you're sure to have a jolly old time.

The in-between..........2007-01-07

This is a great book for one who is looking for an easy-to-understand but in-depth analysis of Kieslowski's various films. Although the most recent trilogy is yet to be incorporated into this text, this book nonetheless serves as both a foundation and structure for studies on the 'transcendental' image. This book also cites varying philosophers and important literary figures. A good sum-up point would be the fact that almost all characters, as described by the author, are in between something, usually dichotomies, like life and death.
