you will most definitely, never ever EVER know how to draw those bodacious babes of comics after studying this book! the drawings are god-awful and the "lesson plan" has more holes in it than Robert Davi's face (haha!!) all of the advice is weird and really useless, like telling you draw beautiful women for like four hours a day and fill "sketchbooks full of drawings of hands". so does being a comic book artist mean you have to keep a bodybuilder's schedule? The worst feature is the chapter on computers. Why would somebody who is still trying to learn drawing skills need to even begin to worry about cheesy computer effects? seriously, wasted paper guys. It says on the back the artist has "been in the feild for years", but you would think that after looking at his illustrations for this book that this is his sole commision. The only pleasure I got from reading this book is from seeing that so many other people agree that this book is garbage. Don't buy it.
Horrible amateurish drawings.......2004-05-06
I can't believe how bad the drawings are in this book. Awkward bodies and faces that look like they came from a high school kids figure drawing class. These guys worked in comics? Incredible.
Don't expect much instruction and you DO NOT want to practice your skills by looking at the junk in this book. The bodies are oddly distorted and faces unattractive and unbalanced. Just bad bad stuff.
Avoid this book like the plague.

I buy most every art book on how to draw comics, and leapt at the chance to purchase this book, sight unseen.
My biggest beef with this book, is the lack of diagrams and real drawing reference. Instead we get a lot of 'figure drawing' style sketches accompanied by an occasional full color illo. Not bad, but not what I'm looking for in a drawing instruction book.
This book needs more diagram style drawings with art measured in head lengths (muscles) we women have them you know...(Grin). And step-by-step instructions. Regretfully, this book is composed of nearly finished illustrations. The "turnarounds" that exist are small and amateurly done (page 12 & 13), and should reflect MORE body types and have better details in the arms and legs.
Also the artist seems to have trouble drawing arms. The arms seem disproportionate, and at times are drawn so long, they appear almost ape-like, other times they hang at awkward angles as thought the artist doesn't know quite what to do with them.
Additionally, many of the illustrations in this book, look like they were done in figure drawing class, and don't look like comic book women.
The sections on faces needed to be expanded and improved. Women are drawn with staring eyes and open snarling expressions, making them look like they are suffering from a bad hangover.
What I DID like was the fabulous use of color. Some art is quite good, such as the art used to head each chapter.
While this book is not likely to provide you with anything new in the way of art reference, it has some decent artwork overall and may be able to give the beginning artist some insiration.
A Good Book For The Aspiring Comic Book Artist.......2001-10-11
Although the title is incredibly cheesy, the book itself is pretty good. They cover solidly the foundations of comic-style character design and how to implement them into a scenario. The only thing I really disliked was that they didn't spend enough time on manga. But, there are many many other books that take care of it. The other thing is the cheesiness of the "good girl" in their book. I don't know of a single MODERN comic that had heroines that look like that... they ALL look like the "bad girl" these days!

the review of this reader...
1st the dynamic duo of frank and mike attempt to tackle posing.... bad, inconsistent, awkward posing... here the writing out-merits the amateurishly illustrated bad sketches. foreshortening is not this artist's strong suit and shouldn't have been attempted. yes, there are good sketches here, but inconsistently strewn thoughout the third of material in this book. Take a look at Loomis' or Hogarth's books to see consistent GOOD posing... and better foreshortening.
2nd, we move on to features like hairstyles, hands and faces that seem to mimic current as well as golden age comic styles.... juxtaposed... I'm not kidding. it's like the Jack Kirby Good Girl meets the Marc Silvestri Demon Spawn. nothing here that wasn't in marvel's "How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way".
3rd, an interesting foray into Manga and 40's style pin-up art. just barely touched on. there's nothing here to even comment on except BUY EISNER'S BOOKS FIRST, if you want to see real pin-up art.
4th, we get into some material that this reader believes shows the meddle of both the writer and artist. do they pursue it to any substantial point that it's worth you plunking down a $20 bill? No way, fan-boy. 2 pages dedicated to the nightmare of perspective... you're kidding right? Try David Chelsea's book. 2 pages dedicated to inking...try 88 pages with over a dozen contributing artists in Gary Martin's book.
next, frank and mike plunge us into more fluff material... weapons and powers. I hate to say it.... but even Christopher Hart's books are marginally better here with slightly MORE material.
finally, they finish up with computer commentary. a whole book in it's own right could have been written on comic book coloring and pre-press software and Mike only mentions the barest essentials.
I don't know who 1st approached who in this travesty, but this book is fluff. the only professional thing in this book is Mark Wheatly's coloring. hopefully this hasn't dragged his career down.
Here's a suggestion to the publishers... pick one thing that you can professionally illustrate and pursue it consistently. Take a look at the books I mentioned above to get an idea of the longevity of good material.

This book is really great. My son picked it out as something he wanted because Spiderman was on the cover. I would never have thought to buy it. The content is great. It takes you step by step in drawing. It all starts with the stick figure with ball joints. This may seem dumb, but it is essential. I have been poor at drawing a body or figure, but after using the starting point of the stick figure and then adding more to it, I could not believe how well it turned out. I still only at the beginning too. Lots more to learn from it! This is a great way to teach my son how to draw at an early age. The superhero tie in is perfect, but the content is top notch.

I make my living as an artist and am a lover of comic book and cartoon art. This book is a great introduction for children of any age who want to learn to draw superheroes and comics. It keeps the concepts fairly simple. My kids love it. I believe they have done all the exercises in the book and are ready for something a little more in depth...like maybe "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way."

This book is good for young artists and young artists only. If you're a kid who just wants to enhance your doodling skills then buy this book! The markers it comes with are water based, cheap, and nothing like what the pros use. If you are over 13 or you are young but want to become a very serious artist do not buy this book! you should buy: How To Draw the Marvel Way by Stan Lee. That book is quite a bit more advanced and involved for drawing your favorite Marvel characters and for creating your own characters.
One of the Best Drawing Books Ever Written.......2003-06-22
When I started out with this book, I was a clumsy, struggling artist, who knew nothing of muscle layout, stick figures, how to draw hands: mostly nothing. I had been illustrating my comic books with simple cartoon figures for some years.
After purchasing this book, in literally two weeks after I started reading, it my drawing skill increased three-fold! My simple cartoon characters found life in incredibly illustrated figures and costumes, bringing to life new characters in my excitement to draw new things.
This book is not just another drawing book; in fact, I have never seen anything like it. It doesn't just teach you to draw in the Marvel style, it kick-starts your unique artstyle. So in just a couple years, one will have almost indefinitely recognized their own way of drawing detailed figures.

I brought this book to help me with an art project. With the book's help I got a 98 on the project. It gives steps on how to draw many marvel characters like from, Spider-man, Rogue, Storm, and many more. A great book for beginners of all ages.

whether you are having a new baby or someone you know is, this is THE book to get for first time parents. My parents got this for my husband and I when we found out we were pregnant. We could not stop laughing. We passed it around to friends and had everyone at our party on the floor. I think the wheel of responsibility will come in handy in about 6 more months.
Since you can't see inside I will describe my two favorite "dos" and "don'ts". One is a baby in a shopping cart seat strapped in-this is a "do". Then next page shows a baby at the bottom of the cart with groceries stacked on top-this is a "don't".
The first page shows a baby being fed a bottle by the mother- a "do". The next page shows baby being fed a giant chicken leg- a "don't". I know this written explanation isn't nearly as funny. The visuals look just like the people on the cover and the book is arranged as though it is REALLY meant to give advice. Let's hope most new parents already know these basics. :-)
Hilarious book for new parents.......2007-01-09
Not sure what to give new parents that already have too many infant clothes and useless stuffed animals? This book is a hoot from cover to cover. It features airline-literature-styled cartoons of do's and don'ts for new parents. One couple we gave it to said that a party they had wound up completely focused on the book. New parents could probably use a lot more humor in their lives after baby arrives and this book will serve them well.

A co-worker bought this book for a friend of his who was having a baby. He brought it to work to show us, and I laughed until I cried, and all of my mascara was off! I am buying multiple copies of this book to keep on hand, and one for myself. It is one of the funniest books, ever!

hats off to amazon's used service; i had been looking for this book for ages until i found it here. had i discovered this book when i first picked up a guitar at age sixteen, i would be a much better player today. it's all in here, with cool pictures and sound too (record included).

The book is very comprehensive going into a lot of detail and at times is very technical. There are lots of tables and statistics. However, it does a great job of explaining how the various aspects of the game impact the outcome of each shot. Things like cue ball and object ball movement, best cue stick positions for type of shot, how english and top and bottom spin impact cue ball placement, and much more. If you focus on the less technical aspects taught in this book you will come out with a much better understanding of how to shoot better pool. I'm still reading it but have learned alot and I consider myself a better than average pool player already. It is at times tough reading but you can get into it as deeply as you desire and several readings over time will glean more information.

First of all, please excuse my English - it is not my native.
I've bought this book and really happy with this purchase, even Byrne's books were not even close to improve my skills in pool. The were commercially composed so that I had to buy more and more books, but fortunately I've found "Science of pocket billiards". Beleive me, its amazing, right now with a small practice after reading this book I beat my friends.

Real Magic.......2006-08-31
Sometimes people feel that explaining wonderful things makes them somehow less magical, as if a bit of knowledge could rub the awe off of us. I'm inclined to disagree and fortunately for me, there's a whole genre of books devoted to the related jobs of explaining the wonderful and unravelling the mysteries behind ordinary stuff.
This book stands out in that world and also in the world of books about pool. The author has taken the ordinary, sometimes despised game of pocket billiards and subjected its truths to rigorous experimentation. He built apparatus for standardizing speed and direction of balls and developed a simple device for recording where balls struck a cushion.
Koehler's attention to details is pretty wonderful in itself. Consider this: "Theoretically, the center of the tip doesn't need chalk because it makes contact with the cue ball only when it's struck dead-center. When the cue ball is struck dead-center, there's no chance of the tip slipping off and thus, no need for chalk." A tiny matter? sure. Admire the mind behind it? you bet.
The same thorough approach can be seen in chapters like

Great Gift for a Pool-Loving Loved one.......2006-08-27
I bought this for my fiance's birthday- it was one of the highest priority items on his wishlist. It is a big book- about the size of the average college textbook- and he read it straight from front to cover in the matter of a few weeks. He believes that it has really taught him a lot and that he has been playing better (and he was already very good) since he'd started reading it. In summary, this is a fantastic gift for the avid pool player in your life, as long as they are the type willing to sit down and do some reading.
