Book Description
Shange's lyrical poem is a tribute to the language of music and the magical, often mystical, rhythms that connect people. Music defines who we are as individuals, the places where we live, and how we exist within our communities. Music is life.
Written in a syncopated style that has its own melody, the poem is perfectly married to twenty-one extraordinary and diverse works from Romare Bearden who once said, "I paint in the tradition of the blues."
Here is a unique and visionary book that speaks, indeed sings, to both children and adults and is, at once, compelling, profond, and entertaining.
Customer Reviews:
Fell in love.......2003-09-23
Someone read this book to me when I was young. Ever since then I've been inspired to write. I love this book. The word use by Ntozake is refreshing. Her poetry is very original. She has accomplished a lot, because it's suitable for all age groups.
Artful synergyý........2001-03-17
Ntozake Shange's poem, "i live in music", along with Romare Bearden's collages are presented together in this appealing book. The text and the visuals are skillfully paired and they feed each other's expressions.
"i got 15 trumpets where other women got hips
& a upright bass for both sides of my heart"
Shange's words are in turn playful, soulful, artful. The music she describes is encompassing and tangible - a real thing to be felt and true part of our beings.
Bearden's collages and paintings are vivid, engaging images of African American life and culture. The images are expressive and rich illustrations of musicians and singers. "Show Time" and "Fancy Sticks" are nearly audible - one can see the rhythm and song.
Shange and Bearden's talents complement each other so well one would think this had been a concurrent, collaborative effort rather than subsequent assemblage.
Along with i live in music, I highly recommend all the books in this series by Stewart, Tabori & Chang's Art and Poetry series:
"Life Doesn't Frighten Me", poem by Maya Angelou, paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat..... "may i feel said he", poem by e. e. cummings, paintings by Marc Chagall...... "Dance Me to the End of Love", poem by Leonard Cohen, paintings by Henri Matisse
Each one would be a wonderful gift for a teacher, art lover, musician, poet,.... or anyone seeking inspiration. Treat yourself to one - or all.
For all ages.

Book Description
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on the moon? Ernie has . . .
Well, I’d like to visit the moon on a rocket ship high in the air.
I’d like to travel under the sea. I could meet all the fish everywhere.
This is a beautiful full-color version of a song that has become a classic since its first airing on Sesame Street more than 20 years ago.
Customer Reviews:
books made from songs are great!.......2006-02-25
my son is 7 months old and when i got a book version of twinkle twinkle little star, he loved it! when i found this book at the bookstore, it reminded me of my sesame street days! he loves the song and the pictures and now we'll both have grown up with this song!
Makes my heart smile!!.......2006-01-31
What a wonderful book based on the great Sesame Street song! My twins love the song and book!! Beautiful pictures and easy to follow for toddlers.Pricey, yeah.... But well worth the money!!!Best money I spent in a long time!!!
A very loved Book!.......2005-09-15
My 22 month old loves this book, as do I. We sing it together every night, and she loves to see her friends Ernie and Bert in the beautifully illustrated pages. Its a wonderful song, and a lovely story about taking adventures but always coming home.
Enchanting - 5 Stars for Sesame Street and "Ernie".......2005-09-13
I can't read this book to my children without singing. The song is a lovely little lullaby we heard on Sesame Street, sung once by Aaron Neville. It is so beautiful, if you buy this book and don't know the tune, do yourself a favor and get a CD, too! You'll want to "sing" this book! It doesn't matter if you think you don't sing well -- the tune is so simple and your toddler loves your singing voice, anyway.
Even if you don't know the tune, don't sing the song, and don't ever care to "sing" a book with your baby, this little board book catches a lovely, lilting rythym (even without music) that's perfect for bedtime. Read softly with lots of cuddling. The point of the story is that "home" is the best place to live, and other spots are great "just for visiting."
Enchanting - my toddler's favorite!.......2005-07-20
We have enjoyed singing this song to our son almost since he was born, and when we got the book recently, it was an instant hit with him! It makes a wonderful bedtime story. I wish we had known about it a long time ago! Great gift idea, too.

This is a great children's book and a great poem about music. It is a wonderful book to read to a child about music appreciation. The illustrations are wonderful!
Great for teachers to use in a poetry unit.......2000-06-30
This is a remarkable book that paints a masterpiece of feelings. I read this poem many times to my second grade class and asked them to imitate its nature. They did a remarkable job using the "i live in..." starter. Get it out of the library if you can't buy it. Inspirational for 2nd grade up to adults !
This book is great for all ages! Excellent images and words!.......1998-05-01
I love this book! My favorite line would have to be "i got 15 trumpets where other women got hips"
The words are very lyrical and the pictures are great!

Book Description
For most of us, it was just another horrible headline. But for Deborah Spungen, the mother of Nancy, who was stabbed to death at the Chelsea Hotel, it was both a relief and a tragedy. Here is the incredible story of an infant who never stopped screaming, a toddler who attacked people, a teenager addicted to drugs, violence, and easy sex, a daughter completely out of control--who almost destroyed her parents' marriage and the happiness of the rest of her family.
"Honest and moving...Her painful tale is engrossing."
WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD
Customer Reviews:
Blame game.......2007-09-16
Although Nancy had a rough first few days of life and was schizophrenic, it seems to me that her mother blames everyone except herself for her daughter's unmanageable behavior. From birth, the child had no discipline, because the Spungens couldn't stand to hear her have a tantrum. Well, boo hoo people that's part of being a parent - having to hear tantrums sometimes. Giving in only creates a monster; you have to have a stronger will than your child. They gave into her and would discipline their other two children but not Nancy. Her mother blamed everything on her, including her own infidelity and then wonders why all Nancy's anger was directed towards her. We had a schizophrenic in the family and as a child she never acted like Nancy, probably because unlike Nancy, she had discipline and structure in her life. This is what happens to your child, sick or not, when you don't discipline them at all. I think Nancy still would've been sick, but perhaps not the monster her mother describes in this book. I feel she also helped dig her daughter's grave by giving her money when she knew she was shooting up. She rails against the press exploiting her daughter and giving her a bad image, yet her own mother descibes what a monster she was in this book and profits from it. What makes her any different than any of the tabloids? Even though I didn't pity Mrs. Spungen and felt like she brought a lot of her child's behavior on herself by not disciplining her, I did enjoy the book. I like how it talks about the birth of punk rock and the beginnings of the sham band the Sex Pistols, a group of non-musically inclined kids who sold an image rather than great music, or even good music for that matter. Don't get me wrong, I love punk, but at least the Ramones looked the part AND could carry a tune.
Sad reading.......2007-08-25
This book is very sad.The way the girl really had no one who understood her exept Sid Vicious is sad.He could not help her.
I have a friend in school like this and she is doing well. She has a good foster home with parents who take an interest in her and keep her on her medicine.
This book can't help anyone with a family member whose disturbed.I cant recomend it for anybody as a help book because they never figured out whats wrong with Nancy and it's just real painful to read.
True story of mental ilness .......2007-08-08
This book about a very disturbed girl and the pressure and toils on her family is very interesting. It is also extremly sad because there is no cure for the girl and as the tittle lets you know, she eventually dies.Murdered by an equaly disturbed boyfriend and member of the Sex Pistols.I recomend this book especially for schizophrenec awareness.
Excellent.......2007-07-06
This was a great book. It was a completely honest story of the hell a family endured due to a child with an illness. Very well written. I feel for the author, I don't know anyone who would be able to endure a life like hers.
Tragic story of a family in crisis.......2007-06-06
This a terribly sad, sad story but there is much to be learned by what Nancy's family has gone through. Dealing with a troubled individual in the family is a daily torment. Getting help for them is a challenge that is often compounded by the resistance of the very person who needs the assistance. Hopefully, some families will be able to prevent their own child's self destruction and consequent death by reading this book.

Book Description
Home decorating will never be the same. Close your curtains! Throw away your summery linens! Forget about those white eyelet pillow covers! And for Goth's sake, buy some black lights! Voltaire is here to help you with your home decorating dilemmas, guide you through the hardware stores and decorating centers (which are so difficult for Goths to navigate), and lay it all out on the line about which shade of black goes with which shade of black. Who knows?! One day soon he might have his own decorating line at a discount store. In this world of pastels and plaids, it's so hard for Goths to find anything aesthetically appealing. You go in search of Edward Gorey and wind up with an eyeful of Eddie Bauer. With Voltaire's Paint It Black you can turn the unbearably mundane into the delightfully macabre with little more than a touch of creativity and a can of black spray paint.
Customer Reviews:
Like Martha Stewart, only better and not a career criminal.......2007-09-20
A friend of mine let me borrow this book. I am amazed that I gave it back without crying like a baby. From spooky dolls to bottle candle holders to a Gothic wedding, this is the perfect starter guide for the do it yourself goth. Or, if nothing else, it is a good laugh and an easy read.
Entertaining and beautiful book, but ideas are very basic.......2007-09-03
If you're a fan of Voltaire's brand of snarky humor, you'll enjoy this book on gothic homemaking. The design of the book is worth the price on its own; the black-white-and-red color scheme and black pages are sleek and lovely. My only "complaint" (and it's not really a complaint so much as an observation) is that quite a few of the ideas are very basic and straightforward, and could be found online for free. (Examples: hanging cloth on your walls instead of painting; turning boring dolls into demon dolls.) But, there are a lot of really cool and inventive ideas with complete and helpful instructions, such as the "goth box" shelves, picture frames, and the graveyard cake (which looks as delicious as it does spooky). Voltaire also gets points for including specific recommendations for where to find some of the materials, such as car decals for "pimping your ride." These details turn what could have been rather bland ideas into truly helpful ones. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who's just getting started with gothic decorating, wants a few new ideas, or just enjoys Voltaire's signature humor.
paint it black.......2007-04-11
Very fun read,Voltaire's second book. Alot of great and creative ideas on how to goth out your home. And as always, very funny observations by Voltaire. Highly reccommend for Voltaire fans and goth fans.
cute little book.......2007-02-20
This book would've served me well in my Goth period but alas even Goths must sometimes grow up. Though I've since passed this book on it was a delightful little read and only Voltaire could've pulled it off.
Nice day for a BLACK wedding!!!!.......2006-11-09
I found his chapter on gothic weddings the most amusing, although some of it seemed too far out for me. His book was throughly entertaining to read has a artist and one of the darker-fashion inclined crowd. :) I reccomend this book because it's ideas are practical, inexpensive, and leave lots of room for the gothic imagination!!! BUY THIS BOOK!!!! :)

Customer Reviews:
A magnificent look at the performer and wonderful woman behind it.......2006-08-17
This is a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful book about the life and career of "Miss Showbusiness" Judy Garland. This was the first real book on Judy I read and what an excellent way to begin. I had vagually known that the many stories about Judy were disgusting lies. Now John Fricke (after his other great book) now puts Judy in her proper place, I wanted to get to know the woman better and this book did better than that. I actually felt that I was there with Judy, experencing her warmth, joy and laughter with her in her personal life and watching her perform on the sets of films, live in concert and on her tv series. I actually got to know Judy from this book and I loved her.
Stories about Judy are often innaccurate but this book (and a few others) are the real deal. Most biographers like to think that Judy was a tragic figure and her life was a hopeless ride to despair and degredation.
But this book changed all that, Fricke brilliantly captures Judy Garland as her friends, family and co-workers knew her, as a bright, intelligent, witty human being and also a affectionate, kind and caring lady who happened to be one of the most talented performers to grace this earth.
Well done, Mr. Fricke and thank you.
Picture galore!.......2006-06-27
As a relatively new fan to Judy, I bought this book mainly due to the positive reviews here on Amazon, and Amazon writers never fail. This book is truly fantastic. With more rare pictures than you can shake a stick at, most of them at better-than-good quality, too. These pictures, complete to extensive captions and quotes by the people who knew Judy, span her entire lifetime. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and indeed these pictures speak more plainly to the reader than even the most comprehensive biography. Judy Garland was a phenomenal talent, and what a pleasure to have such a wonderful book devoted to this true star.
Judy, Judy, Judy!.......2005-07-21
The rare photographs in this book are worth the purchase price alone! John Fricke seems to know more about Judy Garland than probably most of her family and friends. You'll come away with a new appreciation of this talented and troubled woman.
This book is a must-have for all Garland and Oz fans!!
Great Photos.......2005-07-15
This book gave me a refreshing and rare look at Judy Garland's life through pictures. The most interesting ones were of her behind the scenes, with family or rehearsing. These are ones of her behind the scenes laughing and dancing with people like Gene Kelly. So any fan of the classic musicals would enjoy these photos.
You get to be a witness to what an extraordinary person she was not only on the screen, but off, and in person. There are great quotes from people who knew her, all of them saying how she really was unique and a one-of-a-kind class act. She did have a hard life but I like the way this book doesn't seem to focus on that at all. The focal point of this book is to show the great points of her life that fans will enjoy seeing and that's good enough for me.
It's great to see her in her prime and with some of the top stars of the day. It shows the excitement in Hollywood and their lives in that era, and how she was in the very midst of all of it.
Any Judy Garland fan, really anyone, will enjoy this look at Judy Garland's life through photos. It really is a book that makes you want to look at it over and over again.
Five stars for one of our brightest and loneliest stars.......2004-10-25
She's reviving her career, she's in London with a troubled marriage that's fodder for the tabloids...no, we're not speaking of Liza Minnelli, mega-talented daughter of "Dorothy Gale from Kansas," but of "Baby Gumm," Frances Gumm, who you might have heard of as Judy Garland.
In a memorable scene from the 2001 miniseries "Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows," a frustrated Garland, played to perfection by Judy Davis, shouts into the phone, "Yes, I've heard how difficult it is to work with Judy Garland. Do you know how difficult it is to be Judy Garland? I've been trying to be Judy Garland all my life!" In the foreword to Judy Garland: A Tribute In Art And Anecdote, Garland's daughter Lorna Luft echoes this sentiment in as loving a tribute to her mother as the miniseries, based on Luft's own published memoir, and as reverent yet observant as John Fricke's stunning, definitive, human, glowing, not-in-the-least-fawning encomium on Garland's life. You'll love the posters, photographic portrait of entertainment history, drawings, and "home movie" photos of the private Garland. Garland's children, flawed and loving, gave her added complexity as a working mom heroine. To quote the title of one of her movies, "I Could Go On Singing." In Fricke's book, she does just that.

Heart & Soul celebrates the vibrant, flamboyant, and extravagant flowering in African American culture that occurred between 1930 and 1975. From Cab Calloway to Ray Charles, the Four Tops to the Delfonics, this informative and hugely entertaining book chronicles this musical history told in legends, facts, and rumors every bit as colorful as the images that illustrate the book. The story is filled with characters such as O. V. Wright, a singer deemed "too ugly to tour"; Frankie Lymon, who received a hot dog as full payment for some of the greatest R&B songs of all time; Billie Holiday shooting dice with the boys on the bus; and soul ghoul Screamin' Jay Hawkins locked in his coffin by the Drifters. Featuring 400 original photographs, publicity shots, posters, programs, advertisements, album sleeves, and more, here is a story of hot music and high style, of pencil-thin mustaches and zoot suits, and of audacious people who made the world a richer, wilder, and definitely cooler place for the rest of us.

Covers of color.......2006-01-30
A wrap-up of black music mixing all styles with the use of record covers to visually hold it all together. The breezy text is very generalised and really no more than naming performers, their hits and odd bits of showbiz gossip. I found it rather annoying that black music styles were mixed together, Charlie Parker, James Brown, Lonnie Johnson, Sonny Terry and Hadda Brooks are some of the record covers on pages ninety-four and five, the only common element is that they are all black, their music though, is completely different in style. Jazz is probably the only black music, in the past, to develop eye catching covers and the book ignores anything from record companies like Blue Note, Riverside, Atlantic or Verve.
The last chapter, 'Soul for sale', includes several movie posters of black musicians appearing in pop music movies but it also deals with the marketing of black musicians as role models in advertising, mostly for cigarettes, alcohol and hair products and though it rather strays from the book's main focus it is a subject that would make an interesting visual book about this area of black life.
Most of the four hundred illustrations in the book are covers and as expected none are of any design merit but put them all together in a book and they superficially become interesting. A similar thing occurs in 'A Separate Cinema' (ISBN 0374523606) probably the only book to concentrate on black cast movie posters. None of them will win any design awards yet they all have an exuberant colorful style when so many are presented together.
'Heart & Soul' is worth getting if you are interested in black visual culture and to bring it right up to date have a look at 'The Book of Hip Hop Cover Art' (ISBN 1840009195) by Andrew Emery. In this book some of the covers really are a treat to look at.

Saturday night text-dancing.......1997-12-31
I interrupted my wife's Sunday newspaper idyll to read aloud another's review of this book. My kids were stumped for birthday gift ideas. She put two and two together. What I expected was words that attempt to describe an art form. What I got was a date to a Saturday night text-dance and a trip down album-cover memory lane. This book is a "Land of 1,000 Dances" for the eyes. Stay away if you can't tap your feet and read at the same time.

Book Description
Exercise your brain while you uncover some pithy food for thought. Cryptograms are substitution codes--every letter in the code has been replaced by some other letter; you try to find which letters stand for which others. Every cryptogram has a different substitution system. Some hints: Start with the shortest words. Break down long words into prefixes or suffixes. Look for word containing an apostrophe. A chart gives you hints for three letters in each puzzle. The more you solve, the better you get. It’s like this:
UKG JBPA UBBJ VITY AB PFAHCG HY WKP LBTPAW FYJ UHWK AIRK
WHY DOES WOOD BURN SO EASILY IN THE FOREST AND WITH SUCH
JHLLHRICWG HY BIT LHTPMCFRP?
DIFFICULTY IN OUR FIREPLACE?

One of the Best Cryptograms Books Out There.......2006-08-19
I am really enjoying the cryptograms in "Cryptograms to Keep You Sharp". I love the meaningful quotes, and the font size is perfect! The good quality paper and sprial binding are a big plus as well.
Also, the hints are arranged in the beginning of the book, so you don't have to worry about having a wandering eye, and seeing the full solution when you only wanted a hint.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to both the cryptogram "pro" & "novice" alike - it's a great one!
a great book of cryptograms...printed on good paper........2006-05-05
I am an huge cryptogram fan. This book is great. The only nitpick I have is that the answers are printed one after the other, so you might wind up seeing the next quote if you go to check your answer. I love the spiral binding, and the fact that it is printed on thick white paper. I'm usually frustrated with cryptogram books because the paper is cheap and tears when you inevitably have to erase.
It is what I wanted.......2006-03-13
This book is what I was looking for. Too many cryptograms book have 'too small type font' and are impossible to do. This one is good :)
Love this book!.......2006-03-02
This is the perfect book for cryptogram lovers. You can use none or up to 3 hints for each puzzle. Spiral bound makes it easy to use also.
Cryptograms to Keep You Sharp.......2005-07-21
This book is a favorite for cryptogram lovers like myself. I particularly liked the hint Code sheet that relates to 3 hints for each puzzle. You choose whether to check the hint code sheet only if you need hints. The puzzles become progressively more difficult and they are good to the very last... puzzle. I wanted more, but it's too bad there isn't a volume 2.
