Book Description
Let the therapeutic power of Celtic art enter your world. Follow the ever-changing directional flow of the spiral as you reflect on the experiences of life, death and rebirth. Reproduce intricate knotwork designs as the past, present, and future commingle into an endless tapestry of life. Dozens of patterns—some adapted from manuscripts and stone crosses, others from rough sketches that are gradually refined—are presented in a workbook format by an acclaimed Celtic artist.
Customer Reviews:
Nice source of inspiration, but short on instruction........2004-11-23
If you're looking for a book with detailed instructions on how to design Celtic knot artwork, this isn't what you want. Author Courtney Davis provides a little background information about the basic knot patterns used to make larger Celtic designs, but does not say much on how to go about creating your own original patterns. Rather, he has put together a collection of several of his own designs (both original and adapted from historical pieces) and says that the images in the book "designed for young and old alike to adapt and colour for their own use" (pg. 10). So if you're looking for an advanced instruction manual, keep looking.
However, the book is still useful in a number of ways:
(1) Beginning artists can do just what Davis advises, and play around with the patterns offered here, making little adjustments to create new designs. This is an excellent way of familiarizing oneself with the way Celtic knotwork is put together. Once you understand the basic structural themes, you can get bolder and start creating your own designs.
(2) Artists already familiar with the construction of Celtic knots may still enjoy perusing the patterns in the book while looking for inspiration for their own works. I do this a lot myself, and often incorporate elements of various pieces into my artwork.
(3) Children and beginning artists will find that this makes a very nice coloring book. The knots and spirals are full-page black-and-white outline drawings, ideal for coloring. For those using the book in this way Davis suggests, and I agree, that you should photocopy the image you want to work with rather than coloring straight into the book. This way, you can always re-do the same piece in different colors later on.
Davis begins the book with a brief introduction to Celtic artwork, including its history, purpose, and use and effect of color. The information is surface-level at best, but still interesting. From here on, the book is divided into two sections as the title implies. The first concerns knotwork, and the second deals with spirals. The sections offer basic information on the structure of knots and spirals, a little more history, and some of Davis's own interpretations on symbolism. There are also approximately 45 patterns for you to work with and draw inspiration from, and at the center of the book can be found 16 quarter-page color examples. Each image is accompanied by a caption explaining a little about the origins of the design.
Whether the book will be worthwhile to you depends on what you are looking for. If you want a lot of instruction, you won't find it here. But if you just want a source of possible inspiration, this may be a useful resource to help you generate ideas.
Great coloring book...........2002-07-20
KNOTWORK AND SPIRALS by Courtney Davis is a great way to introduce kids to the intricacies of Celtic design. While historical accuracy is not Davis' specialty, the author captures the spirit if not the intent of these designs. Call it artistic license.
The book is filled with examples of knotwork borders, medallions, and other elements used to illustrate the beautiful books painstakingly copied by Christian monks--like the Book of Kells--as well as other church artifacts. Davis shares some insights into the symbology or supposed symbology of some designs, such as the center of the spiral as the 'motionless mover' (God) with flows of energy as spirals around the center.
Davis includes a number of designs of his own creation, built up as he says from doodles. There are many pages of knots and spirals for coloring, so the book makes a nice workbook for children with an artistic bent.
Inspired Celtic Artist.......2000-11-18
This is a great book to inspire a Celtic Artist, or to show a person what Celtic Art is all about. It is easy to follow and it explaines how the art can be personalized with easy changes and examples, including full color finished work. History is also included about the many different pieces that tells the reader of the original source the artwork was found. The illistrations are large, clear and very easy to work with. This is a perfect book for someone interested in Celtic Art.

Book Description
MacPherson established his won unique niche' among the day's popular pin-up artists. He used pastels and colored pencils to create an eye-catching sketchy look that is both alluring and provocative.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2001-12-24
The pin-ups of days gone-by, still retain their classy beauty, their timeless appeal. Any lover of pin-up art, any lover of the girl-next door female form, any lover of classy and beautiful art of the ladies, ought to seriously consider adding this book to their collection. A+
worth getting !!! I just wish it were bigger.......2001-10-18
Like VARGAS Vignettes 1 and 2, I wish this was bigger. The book is small and that is the only reason it didn't get the full 5 stars. Although Vargas is my favorite artist, MacPherson is right up there too, and this book shows a lot of examples of his WWII era art. A lot of these pin-ups also appeared on the WWII bombers. There are about 30 works represented and they are all beautiful.
The book has a nice set-up as the pinups are printed nicely with good color reproduction. I use them as reference for painting nose art on A-2 flight jackets and the quality really allows me to get some really nice detail for my purposes.
At $10 it is worth getting but I would also recommend VARGA by Robothman which is a lot bigger format so it really allows you to fully appreciate the art with the bigger format. Also, check out THE GREAT AMERICAN PIN-UP as that has a lot of pin-up artists represented and shows the rich history of Pin-Up art
Another major book by Pin Up Art Specialist Max Allan Collin.......2000-07-30
Award winning Author Max Allan Collins is also one of the foremost collectors of original pin up art in the country. He combines his love of this media with the detailed research evident in his awardwinning Nate Heller and Eliot Ness historical novels to produce yet another outstanding pin up book similar to his award winning collaboration with artist Gil Elvgren's son Drake last year. Max comes to this project with the benefit also of having known Earl MacPherson in his final years of life. On top of all of this you get the high production quality known to most collector's press books. Highly recommended.

James Finn Garner has taken 12 time-tested tales and retold them with the newfound sensitivity of our times. Here's a snippet from "Little Red Riding Hood":
Leap into a fairy-tale world where trolls are "dirt-accomplished and odor-enhanced," witches are "kindness-impaired," and Cinderella wears a gown "woven of silk stolen from unsuspecting silkworms." We can only regret that Garner had to exclude "The Duckling That Was Judged on Its Personal Merits and Not on Its Physical Appearance" for space reasons.
Customer Reviews:
Ruinously misses the mark.......2007-09-24
Take some of the most beloved fairy tales and modify them (robotically) such that they can be deemed politically correct and what do you (author James Finn Garner) get: ridiculous, unfunny stories that can best be described as "annoying." Adjective modifications are simple and predictable: replace "poor eyesight" with "optically challenged," "short" with "vertically challenged," "stinky" with "odor-enhanced," "poor" with "economically disadvantaged," "cruel" with "kindness-impaired," and "hot" with "thermally enhanced." Plot changes are unoriginal and boring: the big bad wolf falls dead "from a massive heart attack from eating too many fatty foods;" the pigs "liberate their homeland," the witch and the prince team up to exploit Rapunzel's singing talent, the males at Cinderella's ball get into a fight, and an impotent prince, upon seeing (and thus becoming cured) the seemingly dead Snow White, requests of the "Seven Towering Giants" that he be allowed to "...take the cure..." (read - satisfy an attraction to corpses) with her (p 54). Thankfully, readers will not have to waste much time slogging through its seventy-nine short pages. Equally bad: Once Upon a More Enlightened Time. Many times better: The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka, The Stinky Cheese Man by Jon Scieszka, and Kate and the Beanstalk by Mary Pope Osborne.
Either stupid or ignorant, I'm not sure which........2007-07-20
This is either a horrible attempt to be satirical or a morons attempt to be serious. Sadly, the forward to the book makes it seem like the latter is the more likely case. From the fool's spelling of women with a 'y', to the fumbling, awkward attempts to make characters gender-neutral, this tome only serves to illustrate the stupidity of the author. A much-less forced attempt at PC terminology could have promoted the book to satire or parody, but as published, it fails to be either funny or enlightening.
I hope some capable author will someday take on the task of showing the insanity of political correctness with an actually funny revision of the classics.
Ha ha ha ha ha!.......2007-05-15
I first started reading this book to some children, and found myself cracking up so much that before long, I was reading it to the adults too.
Bought this copy to share with a wise friend who says, "Our politically correct society doesn't work." It arrived quickly & in good condition.
Goldilocks, Melanin-Deprived Environmental Researcher.......2007-04-16
When a bandwagon reaches the point that it is subject to satirical spoofs, it's a good indication that said bandwagon has traveled way too far. `Political correctness' is one such bandwagon, and this little book is a pretty good attempt at poking pins in its over-inflated rhetoric.
From The Emperor's New Clothes with disastrous consequences for our economically disadvantaged tailor to Chicken Little's (the name not being any attempt to classify said person as physically sized-disadvantaged) attempt to find a lawyer so she can sue whomever caused the sky to fall on her head causing her great emotional distress, the stories in this book will often bring a chuckle, and might cause one to reflect on the real world item the story is spoofing. The stories are modified from the traditional ones by more than just the insertion of `politically correct' language, as the endings are twisted into their own version of just how the politically correct version of the world would have things play out.
However, I'd recommend that this be read one story at time, with long days between stories, as they do become somewhat repetitive when read all at one gulp, losing some of their charm in the process. The insertion of the PC verbiage becomes expectable and not as funny, so that the occasional non-PC aside stands out, like his comment on the seven dwarves living arrangements (7 beds, 7 TV's, 7 stacks of dirty dishes) as possibly being the abode of a sloppy numerologist.
A fun little diversion, best when eaten in small bites.
--Reviewed by Patrick Shepherd (hyperpat)
Let's Turn Tradition On It's Ear :).......2007-04-02
What would happen if Little Red Riding Hood became angry with the woodsman (oops! woodsperson) for trying to save her from the Big Bad Wolf? Can you imagine a scenario where Cinderella actually ended up getting along with her sisters-of-step? How would The Three Bears handle Goldilocks being a rogue environmental scientist? In Politically Correct Bedtime Stories: Modern Tales for Our Life & Times, you can find the answer to these questions and more. This book takes these and other classic fairy tales from our childhood, strips them of offensive (to some people) language, replaces said language with more neutral word choices, for a brand new take on classic stories. Sounds boring? Hardly. You will laugh hysterically and these stories just might make you think of life in a different way.
I had been given this book as a Christmas gift when it first came out but somehow I had lost it, after a time. In rereading it, I laughed as much as I had before. Even though I still love the original fairy tales, it is amazing how sexist some of them actually are, when you think about it. Along with the humor, there are also strong themes of self-reliance, self-esteem, and empowerment in many of these stories.

Customer Reviews:
this book is not for children.......2003-06-25
this book is for adults, it has adult humor. The reason you found it too graphic to read to your kids is because it is not for them.
Not for the masses........2002-12-17
I found this book to be a little to graffic to read to my children. My kids are coming to the age where they are ready for fairy tales, but I don't think that I want them to learn about such topics before they are drinking out of cups without lids on them. If James Finn Garner intended this book for children rather than a mens bathroom at a truck stop, then he intends to raise his children in a different manner than my wife and I. Some day my children will be ready to learn about sexuality and the humor behind it, but I think when that day comes they will be reading beyond the three little pigs and little red riding hood.
A wry parody of all things "politically correct.".......2000-10-04
Amusing retellings of the most familiar fairy-tales: Snow White (the dwarves become "vertically-challenged"), The Pied Piper of Hamiln (Hamlin has "ethno-religious diversity"), Goldilocks and the Three Bears (who live together "anthropomorphically in a little cottage as a neuclear family"), etc, etc, etc. The humor wears thin after a few tales, which are reasonably short, so this works best as a bathroom book. Not for children, as they would ask far too many questions.
A very funny book.......2000-04-22
This book by James Finn Garner twists fairy tales to drop dead laughers. The new stories are now free of all cruel and sexist remarks and makes it all seem so natural it's funny. I highly recomend this book.
political satire.......2000-04-22
My favorite part of these titles is in the first book the story of the 3 little pigs and in the second, the alphabet soup.
This is tongue in cheek satire at it's finest.

Watch the Star Wars trilogy enough times and you'll find yourself straining to catch all the little details. Not the subtle plot points (Darth is Luke's dad, check; Luke and Leia are brother and sister, check), but all the cool gear and gadgets that keep flashing in front of the camera. Like what are those pointy things on Boba Fett's kneepads? And what's with all that ammo on Chewie's bandolier? And does an Imperial Probe really need that many legs? Finally, we've got some answers.
David West Reynolds, a boyish Ph.D. in archaeology who looks like he just rode in on the last Bantha, has catalogued the artifacts and inhabitants of the Star Wars universe with the same clinical thoroughness one typically reserves for studying Mesopotamia. His oversized, eye-pleasing picture book is packed with scrutinizing photos of actual props and characters from the movies, complete with systematic, scientific labels. And Reynolds's friendly, pseudo-academic style seamlessly blends new information with old. (In the Sand People description, you can't help but hear Alec Guinness's voice when Reynolds reveals that "Sand People ride in single file to hide their numbers.") In a few instances, the book shines an embarrassing light on the movies (Max Rebo is clearly no alien lifeform, just a poofy, blue elephant muppet), but the countless close-ups of thermal detonators, imperial blasters, and gaffi sticks more than make up the difference. --Paul Hughes

Great pictures........2007-09-07
I have 2 little boys who love Star Wars. I like the pictures in this book. The words are too advanced for small children but I try to ad lib. My boys love to look at the pictures.
The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars.......2007-08-13
I bought this book and the complete guide for the entire saga. I was more impressed with this book than the other. This book was missing atleast the one character I was looking for Niem (Sullustan) that flew the Falcon with Lando in 6. So I looked him up on the internet and found his info readily availble on some star wars website. I was hoping that they would atleast list the name and race for ever character shown, but they don't.
Excellent book!.......2007-03-22
This book was just what we needed. My five-year-old son has developed a sudden interest for Star Wars, and since he's too young to watch the films, this book was perfect for him. Excellent pictures, everything is well explained, all the major points of interest are covered.
Very informative!.......2007-02-08
This was one of my very first Star Wars books and I half credit it with my burgeoning interest in the expanded Star Wars universe.
Includes great pictures and information such as what those little knobs on Darth Vader's chestplate are for to what exactly Salacious Crumb (that little Kowakian monkey lizard that works for Jabba the Hutt) does! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then read this book!
Great for the enthusiast, beginner/amateur/expert and all!
Perfect gift for my 10 year old son.......2007-01-02
I bought this book as a gift for my 10 year old son who is a serious Star Wars buff. He told me he likes it because it has a lot of information about the characters, weapons, vehicles and technology.

Definetly Good!.......2003-10-24
Good Book, I wish it were updated & re-released!
Pretty thorough.......2003-06-25
Okay. So I bought this back when it came out in 1995. I remember reading it and thinking, "SO, there IS a fan out there that knows almost as much as I do about Madonna!" Although there is a lot of opinion expressed throughout the book and some missing detail, it is a book worthy of your shelf or coffee table. It may be outdated since Madonna has morph like fifty million times since this book was published. It still is a great book to ahve around, even if for camp purposes.

The Best Madonna Book Ever Published.......2001-11-03
Matthew Rettenmund certainly has done his research. Encyclopedia Madonnica is the most informative book about the Material Girl that has ever been published. After reading this book, you will truly know everything there is to know about the most famous woman in the world. Well-written and organized, it's also chock full of often hilarious tid bits and witty rejoinders. Mr. Rettenmund should do an updated version of this book, to cover the years 1995 to the present. If you love Madonna, then you simply must own this book, along with Michael D. Craig's "Who's That Girl? The Ultimate Madonna Trivia Book!
Stunning.......2001-08-09

Customer Reviews:
Just essential for any pinball enthusiast!.......2006-11-04
What can I say? A comprehensive volume (just like the other two of the series), with (mostly) high quality playfield and backglass photographs plus a LOT of insightful first-hand background stories about and from the people who brought us all these wonderful moments of our lives. You'll even like the tables you've never seen (and probably won't ever see) in your life.
Best Pinball Book Ever.......2006-07-20
I never buy books due to the fact you can read most stuff on the net. This book however, is so well researched and put together that I STRONGLY recommend buying it. There is so much informations, and a truck load of pictures of all sorts of tables.
The Bible of Pinball's 2nd Golden Age!.......2005-04-16
What an incredible book! I use the term 2nd golden age since the 1930's was the first.
This is the second of a three book set written by Michael Shalhoub, and is a must-have for any serious pinball collector or enthusiast. The book is an exhaustive study of each manufacturers (The "Big Three"-Bally, Gottlieb and Williams - also Stern + Chicago Coin and others) output of pins between 1970-1981 when pinball ruled the arcades. During this particular time period more quarters were dropped in pinball machines than was spent at the movie theater box office in the United States!
What makes this book so special (as well as Mr Shalhoub's other titles)is the fact that he interviews so many of the pioneers (artists, designers etc) of pinball, which is no easy task on the authors part since he lives in Australia and almost 90% of all pinball machines were produced in the United States (Chicago)- also some of the individuals interviewed and pictured are well past 80 years old.
The book is a simple read (if you can look away from the great pictures)and each new chapter covers a different year with many highlights (interviews) included, the subject matter/questions the author presents contains specific information related to the particular individual highlighted. The authors enthusiasm is contageous as he explains the features and strategy of each particular game.
Today sadly only 1 manufacturer remains "Stern", but they are committed to pinball and still produce several thousand machines a year. This book is like a great walk down memory lane for anyone (35 and over...) who played the games before video games dominated. I highly recomend this book.
