This book contains headlines, malapropisms, school essays, parental notes to teachers, lawyer-witness dialogues, signs and other assaults on the English language that provide hours of chuckles and retelling to those who have not read it.

When you read a want ad that reads: "Mixing bowl set designed to please a cook with round bottom for efficient beating," or the headline "Stiff Opposition Expected to Casketless Funeral Plan," you have to laugh.

It also reminds me of what a boss once told me: You can always deny what you said; you can never deny what you wrote.

This book is "overpriced, and worth every penny of it."

Have A Good Laugh!.......2007-05-10

This book was recommende to my daughter by a college professor in 1990. I bought it at the time and read it lying down. I laughed so hard, I had to sit up... I have bought several copies since then as gifts, as I did this latest one. I lecture on the Healing Power Of Humor, and use lines form this book. It is a book you do not have to read from cover to cover in order, you can simply open a page and have a good laugh any time.

Hilarious.......2007-01-20

My mom has had this book for years, and it is no wonder she never got rid of it even though it is now brutally beaten up. Organized into sections, the bloopers people have made in essays, signs, even newspapers are worth buying this book for because of how shockingly hilarious they can be. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fluent in English and has even a little sense of humor. It will keep you entertained for a long tme.

Sometimes anguishing, somtimes funny.......2005-08-24

As a compendium of humorous ways that people misuse the English language, "Anguished English" is comprehensive, if not superb. Lederer treats various categories of language errors - bloopers, mixed metaphors, mistranslations , etc. - in separate chapters. "The World According to Student Bloopers" -- a running history of the world allegedly taken from real student written responses -- is often hilarious. Who knew that King Solomon had 300 wives and 700 porcupines, or that Sir Francis Drake *circumcised* the world with a 100-foot clipper? I also enjoyed the chapter on two-headed headlines, some of which took some work to uncover their second meaning. "IKE SAYS NIXON CAN'T STAND PAT" is fairly obvious, but "CARTER PLANS SWELL DEFICIT" took a second or two to puzzle out.

The biggest drawback to the book is that other than or Lederer's short and sometimes forced introductions to each chapter, the book is basically a series of lists, ordered by topic, with no indication of source. Though written in 1978 before the Internet truly got underway, the book often resembles the annoying "funny" e-mails that circulate today on the web. In Lederer's defense, I suspect that some of today's e-mails are actually rip-off's of "Anguished English." But it would have added to his efforts if he had described the process of accumulating his trove of malapropisms, informing us about the source, rather than just laying them out, naked on the ice, as it were. That would have given the reader a bit more to chew on than the warmed over fare offered here, some of which seem too perfect to be true. For instance, it's hard to believe that the journalist who wrote, "IS THERE A RING OF DEBRIS AROUND URANUS?" didn't know exactly what he/she was doing. Yet this headline is offered as an unintentional mistake.

For all its faults and excesses, "Anguished English" is fun and sometimes interesting. Consider it a good buy for a young person interested in learning the subtleties of the English language by studying its misuse

Everyone makes mistakes.......2005-03-09

This book is a great wonderful reminder that everyone makes mistakes, and the are often quite funny! Anguished English will keep you in stitches. The "History of the World" as given through student essays is particularly interesting. Until now, I had no idea that the residents of Moscow were called Mosquitoes! Even more outrageous "facts" can be found throughout this delightful look at the English language.

HILARIOUS.......2004-10-01

This is one of the funniest books I have EVER read. I can't read it public as I inevitably end up laughing very loudly. Definately worth getting.

Funny, funny, funny!.......2003-06-27

This is one of the funniest books! Make sure you're sitting down, or better yet, lying down whe you read this book. You would also be well-advised to take this book in small doses, if you don't want to die laughing.... :-) Grammar has never been so funny. Then again, I'm not sure if I ought to laugh or cry at how the English language is murdered :-) The drawings in the book are also hilarious.
This book is a most enjoyable way to learn about how not to make mistakes in your writing. It has lots of great lines you can pull out to amuse people with, ( eg. Headline - Milk Drinkers Are Turning to Powder). It would also be great reading during the summer, in preparation for English classes. Absolutely loved it. I also hightly recommend his other books.

One of the few sure-fire laughs in print........1998-11-11

"The World According to Student Bloopers," a section of Lederer's book, has been widely pirated on the Internet and is thus familiar to many, even though they may not know its original source. There's a reason why this text has echoed around the world: One cannot read it without laughing. Other sections of the book, all of which deal with the many misuses, distortions and double-entendres encountered in everyday English usage, aren't quite so laugh-packed, but are still well worth the trip.

Andre Bazin died pitifully months after having being released "Touch of evil" , but the impressive documentation effort , the conscientious analysis around the previous films of the prodigal son of Wisconsin, the forewords of Truffaut, make of this book a true artistic worthy to have it and reread it over and over.

Orson Welles and Magic.......2007-07-01

I have always been a fan of Orson Welles on radio and television. Having collected a ton of radio broadcasts on CD and audio cassette and having watched most of his movies, I appreciate the genius of his work. I picked up a copy of this book recently and am amazed at the amount of research put into it. An aspect of Welles rarely discussed is his magic career. At the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention this September in Aberdeen, Maryland, I plan to attend the presentation about Orson Welles and his magic career so I can watch rare footage and films with Welles, and get an even deeper insight to his trickery. Book comes recommended.

GREAT tactical instructor!.......2007-08-12

This is the best tactics book I have. I've written all over it because it's constantly stirring up exciting ideas.

There are 9 "Lessons" (chapters). The Lessons don't just cover one tactical motif after the other but are grouped logically into very useful themes. Lesson One provides the best definition of tactical play I've ever seen, and fully explores these ideas: threats, forcing variations, gain of time, in-between moves, positional sacrifices, intuitive sacrifices, and creating combinations by 1) recognizing motifs, 2) employing tactical ideas, and 3) following through with concrete technique.

Lesson Two, Three, and Four cover all of your basic tactics. The definitions are short but sweet. The examples may require your own independent thinking, but there's enough accompanying text to guide you and to make the point of each example abundantly clear.

Lesson Five and Six are wonderfully instructive on tactics involved in the attack on the King. This is "Art of the Attack" in a condensed, fun and highly effective form. Lesson Five focuses on the vulnerable King and removing the King's defenses, while Six focuses on the essential sacrifices at f7, g7, and h7, as well as Lasker's Combination.

Seven focuses on tactics involving the strategic concepts of the back rank, 7th rank, and far advanced pawn, and Eight is all about tactical techniques for pulling out a draw (I didn't think that topic COULD be interesting).

Finally, Lesson Nine is a fantastically insightful and accessible lesson on how to calculate (the chess improver's holy grail), which alone is worth the price of the book.

This book may not be as complex as variation-intensive books, but nor is it simplistic, and it hits with a high impact per chapter.

Lots of ideas that you can benefit from. Not as useful for teaching as the previous book in the series. Good for independent study.

Disappointing.......2006-07-29

After anxiously waiting for this book, I began to study it, and was very disappointed. Chess Tactics for the Tournament player is a disappointing book.

The themes presented in the chapters are in no logical order! They are just randomly slapped there for you to study.

As another reviewer mentioned, the commentary in this book is very sparse. Sometimes they give examples to easy for the intended audiences (1 or 2 move combinations) and then give very difficult ones right after it (6 or 7 move combinations).

Thye book crams many themes, sometimes 3 or 4, in one chapter. At the end of the chapter, they only give 12 excercises! How are you suppose to learn this stuff if they give an average of 3 excercises per theme?!

Overall, I was disappointed.

I own Just the Facts!, the 7th volume in this series, which is very good. If only the authors mirrored the style in that book with this one.

I ordered the king in Jeopardy, the 4th volume of this course. Hopefully it will be better than this one.

Some useful material but not consistant.......2006-06-06

Books on chess tactics and chess traps are very useful for improving your game. There are a lot of books on tactics and a small number on chess traps (openings tactics). When comparing CHESS TACTICS FOR THE TOURNAMENT PLAYER to my other book "Learn Chess Tactics" and "Winning Chess Traps" I can say this book is jumpy and often not very clear. It goes from a simple position to work on using one pattern, then jumps to a totally unrelated type of pattern that is very difficult. It is like getting a wild card every time. It still gets three stars because there are some good problems to work on that are helpful to improving your game.

Disappointing.......2006-05-21

In my hamble openion is that such work should be assessted by a technique to teach you how to spot tactics. what you will get here is a list of tactical motives with a good collection of solved exercises then unsolved ones. of course the meat is the solved ones to help you understand ideas behind the subject but you will find yourelf with solution just put on front of you without any idea how to reach them.

to be honest here, the book title say for the tournament player which is not my case but also I do not believe this is the way things to be presented for a tournament player.

Baby, It's The Greatest!.......1998-10-12

EVERYTHING you wanted to know about The Honeymooners' "Classic 39" episodes! Plenty of behind-the-scenes stories, last-minute script changes, on-air ad-libs (such as Gleason's surprise crash ending to the "Core A Apple" episode, and Norton's "Rx" exclamation), interviews with cast members, crew members, etc. If you love The Honeymooners or not, this book is an absolute must-have! The book that the reviewer below is looking for is entitled: "The Honeymooners' Lost Episodes", and is listed here at Amazon.com. It covers all the "lost" episodes, but unfortunately is not as well done as this book on the classic 39 episodes (read my review of it under "Honeymooners: To The Moon And Back"). That is the exact same book as this one, though the title is listed in its entirety.
