Book Description
What did sex mean to the ancient Romans? In this lavishly illustrated study, John R. Clarke investigates a rich assortment of Roman erotic art to answer this question--and along the way, he reveals a society quite different from our own. Clarke reevaluates our understanding of Roman art and society in a study informed by recent gender and cultural studies, and focusing for the first time on attitudes toward the erotic among both the Roman non-elite and women. This splendid volume is the first study of erotic art and sexuality to set these works--many newly discovered and previously unpublished--in their ancient context and the first to define the differences between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence.
Roman artists pictured a great range of human sexual activities--far beyond those mentioned in classical literature--including sex between men and women, men and men, women and women, men and boys, threesomes, foursomes, and more. Roman citizens paid artists to decorate expensive objects, such as silver and cameo glass, with scenes of lovemaking. Erotic works were created for and sold to a broad range of consumers, from the elite to the very poor, during a period spanning the first century B.C. through the mid-third century of our era. This erotic art was not hidden away, but was displayed proudly in homes as signs of wealth and luxury. In public spaces, artists often depicted outrageous sexual acrobatics to make people laugh.
Looking at Lovemaking depicts a sophisticated, pre-Christian society that placed a high value on sexual pleasure and the art that represented it. Clarke shows how this culture evolved within religious, social, and legal frameworks that were vastly different from our own and contributes an original and controversial chapter to the history of human sexuality.

Boobs and phalluses et al........2002-03-22
Only one problem (I think): Clarke doesn't really follow up very well on his early-proposed problem, i.e. just how it is that textual representations of sex don't allow us the same latitude of insight into Roman practices as visual works might otherwise. Still, it might be argued that these thousand-word-speaking pictures do the talking for him, and if that's the case, then I'm fine with that. Get this, though. It's a very worthy study.
Clearly Argued, Captivating Book on an Unusual Topic.......2001-01-27
Clarke's book provides very clear analysis of the purpose and nature of ancient Roman erotica. He uses a wide range of sources--literature, instructive manuals, precedent in Greek and Roman art, setting, etc.--to back up his arguments, which he presents in a lucid style that is as pleasurable to read as it is easy to follow. I particularly recommend the chapter on erotic art in public locations in Pompeii.
Lavishly illustrated, unconvincingly argued.......1998-09-26
Clarke claims he is going to reach down from the Roman elite (which produced the literature) to the masses and to reveal a totally alien (to a presumably homogeneous "us") sexuality. The illustrations are plentiful and may be interpreted in many ways--so many and with so little evidence that any Romans saw any of the ways Clarke does that the reader is left to choose with no real guidance from the author. (And rather a lot of the images come from luxury objects so we remain in the world of representations for the upper stratum of Augustan Rome.)

Respectful, Imaginative Natural Nudes.......2001-04-23
This volume does a fine job of capturing the evolution in Robert Farber's style of nude photography over 20 years from 1970-1990. If you are like me, you will find his more experimental work from 1985-1990 to be his best. Although many of his images contain similar elements, his technical ability to achieve those effects made enormous progress over the years. This volume is a classic which belongs in the collection of all those who enjoy well-done, inspiring nude photography.
The images in this book are harder than R (if it were a motion picture) in many cases, but the treatment is always respectful rather than exploitive.
Ronald K. Parker's essay is helpful in explaining Mr. Farber's work. " . . . [H]is moving classical nudes seem to draw inspiration from the Dutch old masters . . . ." " . . . [T]he softness of many of his images echoes Renoir's Impressionism . . . ." " . . . [Y]et his graphic nudes have all the strength of abstract art."
Mr. Parker points out that Mr. Farber "goes beyond the obvious to capture the unusual juxtapositions of body parts and multiple figures." He deals with both the beauty of the model and the models' impact on the viewer ("the provocation"). In doing so, he builds a "mystique of the model -- the hidden face and the exposed body."
Mr. Farber is a master in both natural and studio lighting. That is unusual in nude photography. His "lighting caresses" the model in a way that shoes Mr. Farber "appreciates and respects women."
For those who are interested in learning from his techniques, each of the 99 images here (61 in color) contains technical notes on how it was shot.
From 1970-1974, his work emphasizes a fresh look at the classical idea of the nude. Mr. Farber characterized this "as if I were using the strokes of a brush to paint with light." My favorites from this period were plates 1 and 15.
From 1975-1979, he began working with two models in an image. This was the result of the accidental arrival of two models for the same shooting session. Liking the results, he continued with this approach. My favorite from this period was plate 16.
From 1980-1984, he moved away from color towards black-and-white. This is an unusual direction for a photographer. My favorites from this period were plates 31, 44, 45, 55, and 57.
During 1985-1990, he used his imagination (his long suit) even more. My favorite plates were 66, 70, 73, 75, 78, 83, 84, 89, 91-93, 95, 96, and 98.
Mr. Farber's work is at its strongest when it leave much to the imagination. Now, that's hard to do with nude photography. But these images each contain the potential for 1001 nights of alternative tales.
Where else is less more, even when a lot seems exposed? Certainly abstract art makes this same point. Our attraction to simple designs captures this same elemental fascination with the minimum.
How can you engage others' imaginations to help them accomplish more by providing the outlines of potential, rather than connecting all of the dots?
Robert Farber is an artiste extraordinaire.......1999-02-19
Robert Farber's photography is stunning, very human, sensual, erotic, moving, and passionate. In MHO I would classify him to be among the world's very top photographers when it comes to shooting nudes. Through his eyes you see a totally different beauty, sublime, seductive and it takes your breathe away
a diverse and superbly crafted set of images.......1998-04-02
Farber's most distinctive nudes are firmly rooted in the pictorialist practices of the earliest photgraphers who sought to emulate the artistic conventions of canvas, oil and brush. He loves to use light to produce grain paintings evoking a pointillist impressionism that softens the contours of the human form and transports the subject into a hazy dreamland of delight. This book's high production standards do justice to the marvelous textural effects achieved. The chronological arrangement of the work charts the progression of his thorough exploration of the photographic potential of the undraped male and female form. Graceful, though conventional, full-figure compositions evolve into close-ups often emphasizing the smooth swirl of feminine hips. Farber's fashion background shows in the vividly graphic geometry he constructs from pillars, shadows, windows, gauzy drapings and a piano. He emulates the classic interpretations of the nude in which Edward Weston and Ruth Bernhard twisted, turned and abstracted the human form to produce novel and intriguing shapes that confounded and expanded our conceptions of our physical appearance. The nudes in nature take on a mythological aspect, naiads basking reflectively by pools and streams, or transform themselves into classical sculptures decorating a wealthy estate in the painterly tradition of women portrayed as property. A few examples of collage, surrealism and multiple exposure round out a collection proving Farber's versatility. These pictures can be faulted for the cliched sentimentality of some of the conceptions and the almost exclusive use of models with impossibly slim and shapely physiques. But they aren't hard to look at and homage or not, this is very high caliber, disciplined work with contrasting examples showing both originality and wit. The book concludes with an interview and very helpful technical information on the creation of each photograph. Overall, a diverse and superbly crafted set of images.

Arrgh!! Matey.......2007-07-08
This would be the quintessential tome on how to be a pirate, if pirates could read and used word like "quinessential" and "tome". Just say it be a roarin' good chart for those who are wantin' to be a pirate
Pirattical!.......2007-06-15
I thought this was a kitschy book, and pirates ARE gaining popularity again, so it was a good read. I had a bunch of real laugh out louds, which is always great. And it was very informative. I'm glad they didn't make me think up my own pirate name! And I really wish I knew someone whose last name ends with a 'q'.
Hilarious! That's all, just hilarious.......2006-07-07
If you want to learn to not only talk like a pirate, but swagger, swear, cook, pickup women, tell the future, throw a party and lots more like a pirate, these guys have a book for you! The guys who invented "International Talk Like a Pirate Day" have written the funniest book about men (and some women) who stole and killed for a living I've ever read. There's lots of quizzes and tests - but nothing that you need to take seriously. It's all in fun, and these guys seem to have fun in bunches.
Learn how to find your inner pirate. It'll change your life! And with Cap'n Slappy and Ol' Chumbucket as your guides, you'll laugh a lot too.
Arrrr, Avast Matey!.......2006-06-30
Piratitude. You may be thinking to yourself, "What is that?" Or you may be smart enough to have figured it out by yourself first. In any case, I'm going to explain it to you in the best way I can. Piratitude, simply put (There is a far better definition in the book than I could ever think up) is to be a Pirate and to know it.
When you are a Pirate you will experience many life altering side effects. You will hold yourself in the highest esteem, you will do things you never thought you could do before, you will have so much fun that sometimes, it hurts. But it's all worth it in the end. Being a Pirate is one of those pleasures in life that everyone should experience but not everyone can...
...Until now! "Piratitude! So You Wanna Be A Pirate? Here's How!" The book states, luring you into the world that John "Ol' Chumbucket" Baur and Mark "Cap'n Slappy" Summers have created. A wonderful world full of intrigue, adventure, and more than a fair share of booty! If you are one of the many who want to become a Pirate in the best sense of the word, then you need to pick up this book. You'll be partying like a rock star (A rock star Pirate, imagine that) before you can say "Hoist the belaying pins!" Why you would have to say that in the first place, I'm unsure. But I am sure of one thing. If you want to be a Pirate, you need to pick up this book.
A great gift for the pirate in your life........2006-04-21
I liked this book overall. It has a mix of handy tips for acting like a pirate, like a pirate-name-generator and pirate party games. It also has interesting pirate factoids and trivia at various points in the margins. Also, the authors usually project the right mix of enthusiasm and self-deprecation to keep the book fun.
That said, it is still a bit of a stretch to turn this material into a complete book. I would stack my pirate street cred (ship cred?) up against anyone's. I've given a 45-minute lecture to medical residents in full regalia and voice, and yet even I was finding that the schtick was getting a bit old by the end.
Bottom line - this is a great gift for the pirate in your life. If you personally know a swarthy dog, or have a friend who likes to go by the name "Black Dave", then this would be the perfect thing to give them on "Talk Like A Pirate Day". Five stars if that is why you are buying. If, on the other hand, you are just a casual reader with little interest in a silly pirate book, then 2-3 stars would be about right.

Customer Reviews:
Not impressed........2007-09-26
It is difficult to have faith in a book on comedy that is so painfully unfunny.
Great Book on a Challenging Topic.......2007-07-11
How do you teach someone to be funny? I mean, can you teach someone to be 6 feet tall? One might think either you are - or you aren't.
So I approached this book with caution, in particular after reading the dreadful 'Comedy Writing' by Josefberg. To my surprise, 'Writing The Comedy Film' is excellent and actually seems to distill the essence, the science of comedy. And rather than being a treatise on how to tell jokes, it's foundation is in solid narrative and character. As a plus, it makes NO reference to sitcoms... this is about movies, folks.
Perhaps the only downside is that some of the films referenced - like the potty-humor remake of The Nutty Professor - are not exactly high points of film. This seems unnecessary when there are so many great comedies to choose from.
On a interesting side note, the book helped me better understand scripts I've already written. Sometimes they were funny, other times they weren't (often painfully so). I have a clearer understanding why.
Great book, highly recommended.
PS - ignore moron:forest review below. While many product reviews on Amazon are flooded with fake 5-star reviews, I doubt that's the case here since the reviews are pretty evenly distributed between 2 and 5 stars.
Good on analysis, less so on the practical side.......2007-05-19
Stuart Voytilla is primarily known as a specialist of the Hero's Journey theory of screenwriting, so to see him collaborate on a book focussing writing comedy film is somewhat surprising. As was to be expected, the aforementioned paradigm is the structural model used in the book. Voytilla and Petri delve into what it takes to write a successful comedy screenplay, and they start off with the absolutely essential basics: finding a comic voice, and the physics of comedy. These consist of three elements: comic distance (if you're emotionally involved, it's not funny), surprise and suspense, and the rule of three. They also discern 6 tenets which are present in every comedy: truth, deception, conviction, conflict, wish-fulfilment and worst fear, and chaos. After covering these primal building blocks, they then go into a lengthy discussion of the different comedy genres, and the structural approach specific to each. They differentiate between 10 genres, ranging from the fish-out-of-water tale to the mockumentary. Unfortunately, these genre discussions are fairly brief and less interesting than one might think. The structural elements are generally applicable to every subgenre, so the reader doesn't really get enough of a sense of their uniqueness. Moreover, at least one subgenre is too generic and overlaps with several others (the ensemble comedy). The first half of the book gives good advice on the basics of comedy, but on the whole it is somewhat lacking on the level of providing actual gag-developing techniques. As a whole, a book stronger on analysis than on practical application.
caution other reviews.......2006-01-27
I would give this book 2.5, but you can't give half stars. It had to be 2 rather than 3, because I think all the other reviews are written by the writer's mates. The book has some value, but is poorly structure, spends too much time talking about standard screenwriting form and illustrates points inadequately pointing to only a few films to make each point.
Writing the Comedy Film.......2003-05-08
Writing the Comedy Film by Stuart Voytilla and Scott Petri is such an amazing book. I am the President of Shriekfest, The Los Angeles International Film Festival and Screenplay Competition, so we see many scripts come through our doors. I am not a writer myself, but I do know that many writers should adhere to the rules that Stuart and Scott have laid out. They tell you what comedy is, how it works, the rules of writing comedy, and how to write every single type of comedy out there. They break it down into simple rules, it's so well written, it makes me want to take up writing myself. What I liked the most was that they refer to comedies that we have all seen. So, if you need help writing the fish out of water comedy, the romantic comedy, the sports comedy, the crime comedy, the military comedy, the teen comedy, the farce, or the black comedy this is your book. They break each one of these comedies down, by telling you what each one needs and how to lay it all out. I was really impressed by this book.
Book Description
Recent research has shown that art therapy can be particularly effective for children with autism and related communication disorders. The extensive range of symptoms experienced by autistic people makes them extremely individual in presentation, so any treatment used must be tailored to a range of varying needs. Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic Spectrum presents a new model of practice, which primarily focuses on communication difficulties. The authors describe how negative behaviors and subsequent tension may be alleviated when the autistic child is involved in interactive art making with the therapist.
The book is divided into three parts: the first part explores art making processes and art work, with an emphasis on how art can be specifically communicative. A history of autism is presented within the therapeutic context. The second part challenges existing methods of practice within art therapy and considers the most appropriate approaches to treating autistic children. The last part discusses research that lead to the formulation of this specific model-methodology and assessment interventions are analyzed, as well as the ongoing development of appropriate assessment instruments. Case studies of art therapy with individual autistic children demonstrate the use of the model and the outcomes. Throughout the book, it is emphasized how art therapy works as an integral part of overall management and treatment approaches to autism. It will be of particular interest to all those professionals working with autistic children and specialists in other communication disorders.

Can you actually raise your IQ? Yes, says Gilles Azzopardi in this puzzle book from MENSA the famous high IQ society. Azzopardi shows how to identify and focus on your weak points in all the areas of intelligence which appear in standard tests: reasoning calculation memory perception verbal/lexical and spatial. His principles can raise your score a whole grade the next time you face an IQ test for college entrance employment-or even qualifying for membership in MENSA.

A Sound Book.......2001-03-27
I don't know what the others here are reviewing, but it is not this book... To get on with the review, I like the idea of dividing intelligence into the factors that Azzopardi lists. I thought the tests covered an appropriate range of skills and I also like the idea of being able see where your true intellectual strengths lie. My only problem with the book is that it does not provide much more than problems and explanatory answers. Those looking for actual test-taking strategies are not going to find them.
Good Effort.......1999-03-25
There are 2 "ins" in an inning and no outs. (in)n(in)g
Also, the doctor question seems to personify the pills. In this case, this patient is obviously a psychiatric one. The pills will last indefinitely, telling the patient every half hour, "take one".
Perhaps the test could be revised to correct these questions where there seems to be more than one correct answer. This way the intelligence of the more elevated thinkers might be more accurately assessed(smile).

I didn't get the score I liked on your test, so I resubmitted and got 12 of 12 after I saw your answers! Pretty cool, huh? Then I printed it out and will show it to someone who keeps calling me dumb!
I got 11 out of 12. Try something harder.......1999-03-08
By the way, what kind of prescription would a Dr. give that he would want you to take one every half hour?
