Book Description
A selection of stunning poster paintings from the celebrated Tolkien artist Alan Lee - the man behind many of the striking images from The Lord of The Rings movie. The 50 paintings contained within the centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings in 1992 have themselves become classics and Alan Lee's interpretations are hailed as the most faithful to Tolkien's own vision. This new poster collection, a perfect complement to volume one, reproduces six more of the most popular paintings from the book in a format suitable either for hanging as posters or mounting and framing.
Customer Reviews:
Tolkien's art.......2005-10-02
In the world of Tolkien artwork, two artists sit at the top of the heap: Alan Lee and John Howe. These two artists have devoted a lot of ink to sketching scenes from J.R.R. Tolkien's masterworks, and in the "Lord of the Rings Poster Collection 2," we get to see some of Lee's best work.
"The Halls of Moria" is one of the most stirring pieces of artwork -- an enormous dark hall full of pillars and vaulted ceilings, with a beam of light shining over the Fellowship. "Tol Brandir" shows a tangle of leafless branches, mossy rocks and stone steps. And then there's the "Golden Hall," a beautiful landscape crowned by a hill, on top of which is Theoden's home. Lee's painted clouds look as if they are glowing.
"Orthanc" shifts the focus to grimmer subjects -- Saruman's stronghold is immense, menacing, vaguely insectile with its black shiny look. And, of course, it's surrounded by floodwater. "The Siege of Gondor" is tightly packed with grinning, creepy orcs with spears, and a few human warriors, one of whom is dead. And "Two Orcs" has a pair of suitably creepy-looking orcs, not doing much.
Of the two poster collections of Lee's work, the second is obviously superior. We get a range of subjects, from all three books, and it shows the different kinds of artwork that Lee can do. The posters themselves are lovely -- high quality paper, clear reproduction. As for the pictures themselves....
Alan Lee does "still work" the best -- even when his subjects are in motion, they look very quiet and almost dreamlike. There's a lot of detail poured into these, since even small twigs, cracks and stains make their way into his artwork. They also tend to have muted, faded colours, lots of soft greys, browns and greens. Some of them look like sepia photographs.
Looking at these beautiful posters, it's easy to see why Lee was one of the designers for the "Lord of the Rings" movies' exquisite sets. A wonderful collection of fantasy artwork.
Chris from California.......2004-09-09
This collection features six works of Alan Lee who, along with John Howe, was one of the principle conceptual artists for Peter Jackson's films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings".
The six works featured in this collection are:
1. The Mines of Moria
2. Tol Brandir
3. The Golden Hall
4. Orthanc
5. The Siege of Gondor
6. Two Orcs in the Land of Shadow
The six works are large, stand alone posters on heavy stock contained within an attractive folder featuring "Orthanc" on the front cover. The prints--the originals were done in watercolor--have a black border with the name of the work and the artist at the bottom in small print.
These prints are an excellent addition to any Tolkien fan's collection.

Customer Reviews:
Some of the best pictures.......2002-10-19
This book is a collection of very early pictures of the Beatles, some of which we have seen on promotional material. In my opinion several of those pictures are the Beatles' best. It is also very interesting to read Dezo's comments as to where and when the pictures were taken. He was their first official photographer. Great memories, great book!
A TREASURE CHEST.......2002-04-09
This book is a treasure chest of professional photographs and anecdotes. This book has something for everyone, from the inveterate Beatles' fan to people who are becoming familiar with them. This book is indeed a masterpiece that will long register in the minds of those who read it.
Paper time machine.......1998-07-21
if you are a Beatles fan you must see it, and return in a paper time machine to the beginning of the most fantastic line of the music story.
For every Beatle Fan, and for the Music Lover!.......1996-11-20
For anyone who is interested in music (and who isn't today?), this book is different in the kind of material in it.
The book is comprised of pictures from the early Beatles' career, and have a captioned story line given by their first professional
photographer,the late Dezo Hoffman.
Any music lover should take a look because if it wasn't for the Fabs, you may still be
listening to your Big Band and Swing Time, with a little Blue-Grass on the side.. (I know most of you probably aren't into that!)
I thought it was entertaining, considering I am a Fab Fan..
Some pictures never-before seen.. Some interesting comments.

Book Description
Squeaky Clean Comedy is a wide-ranging rundown of sidesplitting observations from the comedians we've loved throughout the television age. No four-letter words used here, just pure, untainted amusement. Unpolluted witticisms from the likes of Jay Leno, Bill Cosby, David Letterman, Rita Rudner, Bob Hope, Conan O'Brien, Jerry Seinfeld, Johnny Carson, Joan Rivers, Jon Stewart, even classic jokesters such as Rodney Dangerfield and Henny Youngman are included. Clean comedy topics are easy to find, as they are arranged alphabetically from Accidents to Zoos. The spotlessly clean jokes include:
Never pick a fight with an ugly person. They've got nothing to lose. -Robin Williams
I asked, "What is this blended coffee?" And the waiter said, "Yesterday and today's." -Phyllis Diller
It used to be that my age and waist size were the same size. Unfortunately, they still are. -Reno Goodale
I had my car towed. There's nothing wrong with it; that was just cheaper than buying a tank of gas. -Jay Leno
A penny saved is worthless. -Dave Barry
They usually have two tellers in my local bank. Excpet when it's very busy, when they have one. -Rita Rudner
When it comes to laughs, no one can deliver faster than Judy Brown, the editor of five successful joke collections, including Joke Soup, Joke Stew, The Funny Pages, Jokes to Go, and the recently released She's So Funny.

I COULDN'T GIVE THIS BOOK AWAY.......2006-05-21
But I might have sold it for the right price...Anyhoo, I bought this for my sister in law's birthday, which was May 1st. I'm still not finished reading it though, so I came here for a second copy...hers is all bent and dog-eared. I can't believe Brian Beatty gave a review, and Phil Sasso's wife I'm such a fan. Buy several copies for all your funny lovin' loved ones. You simply can't miss!!!
Another great book by Judy Brown........2005-11-01
If you love books by Judy Brown then add this book to your collection. She even has her jokes in here.
Another book full of jokes.Good value and great reading too. Consider a few copies for gifts.
Nice on the eyes.......2005-09-27
I really began to enjoy clean jokes after my son built a clean joke website. I still go to cleanjoke.net each day to read his new joke, but I get really tired of reading on the computer screen. It was because of this that I bought this clean joke book so I could sit and read it in the comfort of my reading chair. These jokes are hilarious and my eyes feel so much better when reading them out of a book!
Laugh out loud humor for all.......2005-06-27
Judy's collection of jokes just keeps getting better with each new book she puts out. Thanks Judy for putting together a collection of jokes that the entire family can share and laugh at. I left a copy of the book on the kitchen table, later I found grandma and grandson both reading from the book and laughing out loud. I can't wait for your next collection.
Smart Funny Stuff.......2005-04-22
Comedy audiences are tougher customers than ever before, looking for comedy that avoids the easy punchline and takes them somewhere they didn't expect. Squeaky Clean Comedy does just that: it mixes Henny Youngman standards with fresh, new plot-twisting humor. Ironic that clean comedy is braver than dirty jokes these days.

Book Description
Artisan, entrepreneur, and impresario, British filmmaker Ridley Scott accepts the profit motive as the only way to thrive in an industry where there is little patience for artistic flourishes or overblown expenses. Yet, while he may pay lip service to the free enterprise system, he is an unapologetic auteur, committed to using every element of film?from evocative lighting to digital composition?to overwhelm our senses and redefine how we perceive the future (Alien, Blade Runner), the past (1492: The Conquest of Paradise, Gladiator), and the present (Thelma & Louise, Black Hawk Down).
This collection of interviews follows Scott over twenty-five years as he perfects the Ridley Scott look, builds his media empire, and reacts to the twenty-year cult status of Blade Runner. Throughout, he discusses the triumphs and challenges involved in working with A-list actors?particularly women such as Susan Sarandon, Sigourney Weaver, and Demi Moore?and big-budget special effects. Scott emerges as a consummate English gentleman who acknowledges the legacy of the futuristic Blade Runner and Alien, but who also is adept at taking the pulse of contemporary American culture.
Unlike many of his colleagues in the U.S., Scott did not attend film school. Instead, he developed his visual sensibility at London's Royal College of Art. Years in television production gave Scott the clout and confidence to revitalize feature filmmaking. He hit the jackpot with Alien but ran into financial and logistical difficulties with Blade Runner and Legend. In response he shifted his attention to more contemporary genres, offering a continental perspective on America in Black Rain and Thelma & Louise. By the late 1990s Scott had achieved both critical and commercial success with Oscar-winning films Gladiator and Black Hawk Down.
Customer Reviews:
The Key of Ridley's Kingdom.......2006-08-20
I usually own all the movies directed by my favorite directors. Even their lesser achievements often prove to say a lot about them. And you usually get to understand the man (if not know them) through their filmography.
I must admit that I never thought of Ridley Scott as one of my favorite directors until I read this book. I never actually realized that I actually own all his movies! and the reason for that is because I was not always connecting the themes and constants all along his career. If you take Alien and Thelma&Louise, one could wonder what is the link between the 2 films. I am not saying that we should always try to connect every filmmaker's movie to his previous ones but after reading Ridley's interviews, I really started understanding the man's endeavour. All through the interviews, spreading from 1975 to 2000, he actually never discusses politics or mystical matters. He is a filmmaker with a pragmatic approach to his art. Coming with an art director background, he likes to build his movies. At some point, it is said he likes to create universe. And this is the connection between all of his movies: the sets speak for Ridley. He seems to take acting very seriously as well so he is not just painting on the surface; content does matter equally as the surface but Ridley works in subtle touches. He obviously demonstrates through the years that he leaves nothing to chance.
Highly recommanded.
candid in depth interviews.......2006-01-24
This book is a great buy for anyone interested in Ridley Scott or in filmmaking in general. His interviews if looked at closely reveal mountains of filmmaking knowledge as it goes through most of his major motion pictures in a series of varying inteviews dating from around 70's to when the book was published. True film buffs might get a good bit of pleasure out of this text as well.
An arresting account of the great film director Ridley Scott.......2005-08-03
I've been a fan of Ridley Scott's films since I first began to study film as an art form and not just as something to do on a weekend. Your eyes are never bored, he constantly produces great images to take in and transport you to new worlds. The level of immersion he allows an audience to indulge in is amazing, there are not too many other filmmakers who are able to do this.
This interview book starts at his early beginnings at art school and his long and lucrative foray into the commercial world and proceeds chronologically through Matchstick Men. There is some mention of Kingdom of Heaven, but no heavy material, as this book was published around the same time this movie came out.
Although a couple of the articles were somewhat familiar to me, most were first time reads for me, and so the book was very fresh and informative. Some of his lesser known or less popular films like White Squall and 1492:Conquest of Paradise have some very good making-of articles and were the most surprising. Much is discussed about Alien, Blade Runner and Thelma and Louise, which is a given, but this doesn't diminish their interest.
What unfolds is a well drawn picture of a man who didn't start making features until he was nearly 40, whose film career has had its ups and downs over the last nearly three decades, yet who has not tired of making pictures that stretch over vast and small spaces and will hopefully continue to innovate and challenge audiences for years to come. I highly recommend this book for his fans, and for those who have taken even passing interest in his films.

Book Description
This text presents the most common chord substitutions in a way that makes them easy to learn and transpose into all twelve keys. Topics include chord embellishment, chord alteration, iii for I subs, vi for I subs, ii for V subs, tritone substitution and many other tricks for spicing up chord progressions.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, an easy guide to chord substitutions.......2007-07-03
I am a guitar teacher. I have been looking for a definitive way to teach my students chords in an analytical manner. I very much believe in marching my students straight up the hill using music theory as a big part of my teaching style. It is not enough just to slap a bunch of chord diagrams in front of learning guitar students and say "Learn these chords or else."
Chord Substitutions for Serious Players is an excellent way to increase your chord vocabulary using principles of music theory as the groundwork. This little book outlines all the main chord substitution rules in easy to read terms.
When writing a new song, I often put this book in front of me and experiment with many of its substitution rules. My song writing has grown richer and more interesting by doing this. I would recommend a good chord dictionary book as this book does not have any actual chord diagrams.
This little book has also become a staple when teaching my students. I have them first learn the triads up the major and minor scales, then I start adding chord substitutions so they can leverage their chord vocabulary.
If you are a teacher or a player of guitar at any level, you need to buy this book and put it in your guitar case. I guarantee that if you read it through and reference it as you write music, you will discover interesting chord progressions that will spice up your composing.
Excellent job Corey.

Customer Reviews:
101 Easy-todo-magic-tricks.......2006-07-13
Well, the title of the book pretty much explains the book. For me, It was a litle too easy, but I'm 16 years old. This book is better suited towards kids. But if you are interested solely in card magic, I recommend not getting it. This book only has self-working card tricks. Although, if you are only interested in a couple easy cards tricks to impress people, then that is what this book offers. This book also contains other tricks, such as dolar bill in a lemon, chinese wands, chinese rings, the inexhaustible hat, the rising cigarette, ring on a string, and the great matchbox escape, to name a few. This book isn't very long. I didn't enjoy the book that much, because I am interested in street magic, and these tricks are not suited to that type of magic, because they all require set-up and need a table or are too angle sensitve, ect. But overall, I would have to say that you shouldn't buy this book (because there are so many better books that hold more information) unless you are a kid. If you are older and a beginner in magic I recommend another book.
Top Beginner Book.......2000-06-07
This is one of the best magic books a beginner could buy. Just as he does in his other books, Bill Tarr teaches in a way that is so easy to understand and follow. These are some of the best classic magic tricks; every magician should know them. I recommend this book to even advanced magicians. If you don't have it on your shelf, you're missing out.
Good.......2000-04-11
This book was absolutly great! All the magic tricks were so easy to do! I loved enterraining my two younger sisters with these tricks.
Read this book!!!.......1998-06-22
this is a really good work for someone just starting in the field. The text is clear and interesting, and the explainitory art leaves nothing to be desired
An extremely good basic magic book with no garbage.......1998-03-11
Unlike many magic texts, this book has incredible illustrations that make every trick easy to understand. The book includes simple ways to create functinal apparatus like Chinese Sticks, chinese Rice Bowls, simple production boxes etc. It also includes a simple routine for the Chinese Linking Rings, the only trick you can't make yourself. With thousands of drawings by an excellent illustrator, this book is a must for anybody interested in learning magic. Mr. Tarr has also written Now You See It, Now You Don't which is undoubtably the best beginning text on sleight of hand on the market. It isn't best because Mr. Tarr is the best, it is best because the writing is clear, the illustrations are top notch, and the material is chosen to teach.

Bill's Back With More than 100.......2000-04-01
Continuing in the style that made the "Now you See it, Now you don't" series of books so valuable for the reader, Bill discusses a series of platform tricks ( quite a few can't be done with ordinary objects i.e. the linking rings and the Chinese wands to name two ) with accompanying hand drawn illustrations by Frank Daniel. This is the system he used to such great effect with illustrator Barry Ross in his other books to show the intricacies of sleight of hand, the drawings were able to show details that would be covered up or obscured in photos. Unlike his other books, which were long on method and short on tricks, this book has a great many tricks often with little thought to the routining of them. And at only 101 tricks he seems at times to be reaching, and missing in the quest to include something useful. I can only recommend about half the book, but in that half is some great classics of magic explained in an easy to follow and understandable manner. The format of the book with its many drawings is useful for but a few tricks (most notably the linking rings). While with many of the others the illustration seem to only waste page space, but then we might have been treated to more tricks like "relit" which is simply the relighting of a just blown out candle by having the flame of a match travel down the smoke.

Book Description
The world's first radio station still broadcasting today was invented by Charles Herrold in 1909 in San Jose, California. His accomplishment was first documented in a notarized statement written by him and published in the Electro-Importing Company's 1910 catalog: "We have given wireless phone concerts to amateur wireless men throughout the Santa Clara Valley." Being the first to "broadcast" radio entertainment and information to a mass audience puts him at the forefront of modern day mass communication.
This biography of Charles Herrold focuses on how he used primitive technology to get on the air. Today it is a 50,000-watt station (KCBS, in San Francisco). The authors describe Herrold's story as one of early triumph and final failure, the story of an "everyman," an individual who was an innovator but never received recognition for his work and, as a result, died penniless. His most important work was done between 1912 and 1917, and following World War I, he received a license and operated station KQW for several years before running out of money. Herrold then worked as a radio time salesman, an audiovisual technician for a high school, and a janitor at a local naval facility, still telling anyone who would listen to him that he was the father of radio. The authors also consider some other early inventors, and the directions that their work took.
Customer Reviews:
Charles Herrold Invented the Radio Station in 1909.......2003-12-15
I wrote this book. In our research, my co-author Gordon Greb and I traveled to the Clark Papers Collection at the Smithsonian to determine if there were any other individuals in the world who had a radio station on the air as early as Charles Herrold did in 1909. We found a few one-time experimenters, but none who as Herrold did: (1) were broadcasting entertainment programming, (2) on a regular basis, (3) pre-announced, (4) to a known audience. The story of Charles Herrold and his discovery is a book worthy of your time. thank you
