Book Description
This extensively illustrated volume collects the varied, powerful work of Meinrad Craighead, an artist whose images find their beginnings in her Catholic roots (she was a nun for fourteen years) as well as in the traditions of Southwest Native American Culture, in which she has immersed herself since moving to New Mexico twenty years ago.
Craighead has devoted her life to contemplation, prayer, and art. Her images are both figurative and abstract; she works in both black-and-white and color. Animals figure prominently in her work, as do dream figures and the artist herself in various manifestations. Oftentimes her images relate journeys she has taken, either on this earth or in waking or sleeping dreams. Many times, her paintings are accompanied by her own telling of these stories, and as a writer, Craighead has the ability to move us as deeply as her images do.
This retrospective conveys Craighead's enormous body of work over the past forty years. It is a tribute to an important visionary, a fine artist, and an inspiring life. Essays by Rosemary Davies, a writer who first met Craighead at Stanbrook Abbey; Virginia Beane Rutter, a Jungian analyst and the author of Embracing Persephone and Celebrating Girls; and Eugenia Parry, an art historian and the author of numerous books and essays about art and photography, discuss Meinrad Craighead's work with subtlety and insight.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating review of Craighead's work.......2006-11-10
This is a retrospective of Meinrad Craighead's art over her lifetime. The book is expensive but the color plates are gorgeous. While I did not find Davies', Rutter's or Parry's comments particularly edifying, I was very interested in what Craighead had to say about her work and life. There is also a chronology with photos of Craighead's life which I also enjoyed and found valuable in understanding her art. Anyone interested in goddess religion and/or shamanism will find this ex-nun's explorations riveting. This artist has a unique vision of the spiritual.

Veteran columnist Molly Ivins, a rare and highly irreverent Texas liberal, is back with a collection of columns gathered from a rich and varied career covering some of the best source material a writer with a knack for whimsy could wish for: politicians. In Who Let the Dogs In, Ivins offers her thoughts on politicos from the Reagan era through the administration of George W. Bush (whom she first nicknamed "Shrub" way back in his early Texas days). While Ivins is of the lefty persuasion, she is far from doctrinaire, which helps separate her from the scores of lockstep pundits on either side: she credits Bill Clinton with being a brilliant politician and condemns the policies of Bush as being terrible for average Americans, but also presents stinging criticisms of Clinton's failed initiatives and defends Bush as being smarter than most give him credit for. Her words are strong, her writing is clear, and her thoughts are well organized. Of course, most people remember a Molly Ivins column for the humor, and we get to witness her firing missiles at low-flying targets like Newt Gingrich and Ross Perot and describing Bush's puzzling lead over Al Gore among men in the 2000 campaign, "One guy played football, went to Vietnam, and is notoriously emotionally distant. The other guy was a cheerleader who got into a National Guard unit through family influence, lost money in the oil business, traded Sammy Sosa and is now sliding through a presidential race on charm. Do I not get American men, or what?" Who Let the Dogs In lacks some of the focus of her Shrub and Bushwhacked simply because it's about a whole generation of political characters as opposed to one memorable Texan, but such broader perspective also affords an opportunity to better understand America's recent history and maybe get a few laughs while doing it. --John Moe
Book Description
The dazzling, inimitable Molly Ivins is back, with her own personal Hall of Fame of America’s most amazing and outlandish politicians–the wicked, the wise, the witty, and the witless–drawn from more than twenty years of reporting on the folks who attempt to run our government (in some cases, into the ground).
Who Let the Dogs In? takes us on a wild ride through two decades of political life, from Ronald Reagan, through Big George and Bill Clinton, to our current top dog, known to Ivins readers simply as Dubya. But those are just a few of the political animals who are honored and skewered for our amusement. Ivins also writes hilariously, perceptively, and at times witheringly of John Ashcroft, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, H. Ross Perot, Tom DeLay, Ann Richards, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, and the current governor of Texas, who is known as Rick “Goodhair” Perry.
Following close on the heels of her phenomenally successful
Bushwhacked and containing an up-to-the-minute Introduction for the campaign season,
Who Let the Dogs In? is political writing at its best.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Molly was the best.......2007-06-12
This book is typical of the late Molly Ivins' spirited humor. She came to the college where I taught and delivered a lecture a few years before she died. Every educated person in Kansas City filled the auditorium to capacity--many students had to sit onstage with her. But the educated audience demonstrated appropriate behavior in the face of her pilloring right-wing politicians: they laughed until their tongues came out their noses and they fell out of their chairs. She accomplished a four-year liberal arts education in just over an hour.
If only America had listened to Molly!.......2006-02-07
Using her trademark witty writing, Molly Ivins delivered up another awesome collection of political writings. She was the one who recognized the threat which George W. Bush posed to society long before a majority of the public (including us in the Lone Star State) knew who he was.
Ivins also knows when to criticize her 'friends' making this book so much more than a 'bash Republicans' reader. Loads of credible facts are tucked into her home-spun writing. This to me is the biggest difference between progressives and the far right; we argue on the facts and in reality while they want to mislead the American public into despair using whatever fabrication is most convenient at the moment.
However, I wish this book had (at least some) new material inside or 'extras' given her tremendous insight and foresight into Texas and American politics. Instead, it is only a collection of her past writings, sufficient in most cases but a letdown specifically because we are talking Molly Ivins.
Already owning her books, I subsequently passed on this title to a friend who is also a 'Molly fan' but is on a much tighter-book buying budget. Yet, I still admire that she reminds the world that we Texas liberals are out there!
Hilarious but interesting.......2005-06-18
When it comes to needing a straight shooting Texas liberal who is not afraid of the BIG BAD GOP, look no further than Molly Ivins. Combined with wit and humor, Ivins gives the left out facts about the conservative cronies you won't find on MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, or any other mainstream media outlet. Give this book a read when you need some political humor or are sick and tired of the rightwing fascists in the media and government. The more you know about these dirty conservative elitists, the more you'll think twice before giving them the keys to govern.
Interesting and comprehensive.......2005-05-07
Molly Ivins is one of the best political authors and columnists out there today, in my opinion. "Who Let the Dogs In?" is one of the better political books I've read recently. It's interesting and has a lot of information about the key political figures of our time-a must read for anyone interested in our current political scene. I, also, enjoy Molly's humorous touches. She knows her subject and is funny, too.
I did note, however, that the on cover illustration of
George W. Bush as a dog is that of a chihuahua. I thought
Ross Perot was "the chihuahua". Bush should've been done as a pitbull as that would be more in keeping with his stubborn personality. The other illustrations of various political figures as dogs are definitely worth looking at, though.
Bright and funny writer hamstrung by her prejudices.......2005-04-17
Many years ago I enjoyed reading Ivins' columns but unforunately her brand of independent liberalism has turned into just another mainstream media voice parroting the Democrats. Her personal hatred of George Bush has become distracting and embarrasing. Strangely enough she reminds me of Rush Limbaugh. When he began doing political commentary on the radio Limbaugh was an independent with a conservative streak and was comfortable attacking Republicans. Similarly Ivins was originally an independent with a liberal streak who was comfortable attacking Democrats. Now Limbaugh is as firmly ensconced in the Republican camp as Ivins is in the Democratic camp.
What a shame.

It's About Time Some one told the truth..........2007-02-06
I read this book and I must say that it is about time someone told the truth about the Spirit of Jezebel and how it operates in the church. It is such a sham and shame that leaders don't take this book and look in the mirror. Jezebel is controlling ministries and maybe the ministry that you are sitting in - it would explain the ungodly decisions, behaviour and why the Word of God can be preached but the people are not set free, restored or salvation is not born in their hearts. This book spells it out! Jezebel is not after you but is after those in authority whether male or female. Are you a leader in a ministry? Get this book!
Evangelist Rose Robinson
Thank you.......2003-05-05
I just want to thank the author for this life changing experience her book has brought into my life. There were things happening in my life, especially in my church that I didn't understand. After I read this book it gave me understanding to associate what I was going through with the bible. This book tied everything together. I learned things about the spirit of Jezebel that I never knew before and I found some of these traits in not only myself but in family and friends as well. At least now I know what spirit it is that I am dealing with and not only that, I know now what I must do in order to get rid of it. You are a wonderful writer. I like how you taught the history of Jezebel first, then you gave examples and then went into the guts of the book and finally you gave a solution. I want to encourage you to keep writing. I will be looking for more of your work in the near future.

Book Description
Teenagers and Teenpics tells the story of two signature developments in the 1950s: the decline of the classical Hollywood cinema and the emergence of that strange new creature, the American teenager. Hollywood's discovery of the teenage moviegoer initiated a progressive "juvenilization" of film content that is today the operative reality of the American motion picture industry.
The juvenilization of the American movies is best revealed in the development of the 1950s "teenpic," a picture targeted at teenagers even to the exclusion of their elders. In a wry and readable style, Doherty defines and interprets the various teenpic film types: rock 'n' roll pictures, j.d. films, horror and sci-fi weirdies, and clean teenpics. Individual films are examined both in light of their impact on the motion picture industry and in terms of their important role in validating the emerging teenage subculture. Also included in this edition is an expanded treatment of teenpics since the 1950s, especially the teenpics produced during the age of AIDS.

Arnold Schoenberg
ASIN: 0520212185 |
Book Description
Here is the first full-scale account of Schoenberg's early tonal works, a rich repertory that music historians have tended to neglect or view as transitional to a mature atonal style.
Between 1893 and 1908, Schoenberg created many genuine masterworks in the genres of Lieder, chamber music, and symphonic music. This book includes detailed critical analyses of such widely admired and performed compositions as Verklärte Nacht, Gurrelieder, and the First Chamber Symphony, as well as discussions of little-known but important songs and instrumental works from the earlier years.
Drawing on original manuscript sources, on Schoenberg's musical environment, on a range of analytical methods, and on Schoenberg's own theories, Frisch traces the development of technique and aesthetic across this critical fifteen-year period of the composer's career.

Customer Reviews:
An Easy, Interesting, Valuable Read.......2002-07-26
I went through about 20 books at the mega book store and found this one. Although there are many different games, I wanted the fundamentals on SLOTS, VIDEO POKER, and CRAPS.
This book examines far more games than what I wanted.
The writing is easy to read, interesting, and helpful. My wife and I have visited casinos a few times. We went to Biloxi, MS last week to see The Eagles in concert (fabulous!) and went to some of the casinos. I got this book before going. My wife is really only interested in slots.
The times we gambled before, we were completely ignorant. THAT is how the casinos make so much money! This time, we walked in with an entirely different understanding and attitude.
Based on the slot machine fundamentals we learned, we played at 3 different casinos for about 6 hours. Each play was with $40-$60, at one machine playing together :). That is a little low, I'd prefer $100 bankroll. We played quarter slots only, one at a time. Although with $100+, I'd play max coins. Our purpose was totally entertainment, have fun together, and not be rushed.
Because of the book, we knew how to evaluate and understand the different machines, and where to look for the looser machines. That is part of the fun.
We left up $12, had quite a few drinks, did some people watching, and had a great time.
Our favorite casinos in Biloxi were the Grand Casinos in both Biloxi and Gulfport, about 10 miles apart. Each has a HUGE non-smoking slot area. How nice!
Insider Information.......2002-06-23
As a layman, that is non-professional and occasional gambler, (after all, I live a stone's throw from Las Vegas!)my curiosity was piqued by the fact that some people seem to have some sort of psychic insight into gaming. How did they do it? Could I do it myself?
I asked a woman, a "high-roller," how she always seemed to cash in on the jackpots. "Oh," she said, " you just go to the new machines." Wow! But how do you know which ones are new? "You just know." I'm sorry, I'm too pragmatic for such an airy answer.
However, I did find what I was looking for in the "Unofficial Guide to Casino Gambling."
I'm still not a millionaire, but I'll tell you I have a lot more fun knowing some of the insider information than I ever did just playing blindly and not knowing what I was really doing wrong.
Read it. You'll love it.
Complete and Easy to Use.......2001-05-30
This guide was what I was looking for -- a complete, easy to use (and easy to carry) book on the math and best methods of casino gambling plus information about casino operations and management (I would like to have had more in this area, but what is there is good). I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks the title fits what they're looking for...
Super Pointers! Great Philosophy! Have Fun!.......2000-06-04
Read this book if you are on a tight budget (like me). All casino games are covered, but my great challenge is video poker. My bankroll is only $100 these days. After reading, and chuckling, through the whole book, especially some of the margin notes, I decided to make my gambling sessions more methodical. (1) I learned to walk away early if I am ahead from when I started. I now take profits suitable to my investment and to my mood that day. You, too, will learn how to set your "investment goals". (2) The more hands I can play with my measly $100 bankroll, the more chances I have to win a Royal (it has happened!), so I learned to go for optimum play, not dollars. That has become my real goal. This book sets you on that course. (3) My "reward" when I lose (I do that, too!)is how much of my little bankroll I am able to hold on to during any 3 hour session. (4) I learned to really enjoy my casino visits and get better at my game at the same time. Players of other casino games will, too. They will be entertained by the whole book, and learn to play their favorite games better and with a better perspective. They may also be blessed with more money to play with. That helps to win more dollars, but the real goal is to have more fun doing it. Thanks for a great book!
Easy tor read... very informative... Enjoy!.......1999-05-07
I originally bought a copy of "The Unofficial Guide to Casino Gambling" on impulse, at a book store, while researching a totally different topic. (I'm one those people who wander around bookstores for hours and always end up finding something interesting to buy.) The border notes hooked me into the purchase. I had to read more. The main text was even better... easy to read, often gently humorous, and very informative about odds, strategy, and the world of casinos. I am now ordering another copy to donate as a raffle prize. The more serious gambler can improve his odds, and will approach his next casino experience with a fresh perspective. The non-gambler will just have fun reading it, and gain some knowledge about what casinos are all about. Either one will come away having learned something. You write extemely well, Mr. Nestor!
