A gifted writer writes the way life feels. Istvan Banyai is one of the very few people who draw that way. This book is a gift, because it offers page after uninterrupted page of his drawings and his entropic world. There is a gracefully short and moving introduction by Kurt Andersen, and then it is clear sailing until the end, where Banyai offers a winding life story disguised as a curriculum vitae. His famous sleight of hand with scale and representation win him a place between art, illustration, and design, one that has made him the reigning master of visual narrative. Minus Equals Plus is his first retrospective monograph, and it has one drawback: the binding is flimsy and awkward even for a paperback. This is a shame, because it's a book that one could "read" backwards and forwards for months and years. --Juliette Cezzar

Book Description

No illustrator surpasses Istvan Banyai at portraying the dream lives of today's New York and Los Angeles hip urban style-setters. His repertoire of visual special effects, whether seen in magazines, books, or animated films, is perfectly suited to a pop culture in which anything—appearance, identity, status—can be morphed into its opposite. This first collection of Banyai's memorable pictures is a tribute to this dazzlingly gifted illustrator, a transplanted Hungarian who sees America with fresh eyes—and whose art uniquely speaks for our time.

In the Banyai universe, reflections and shadows become alternate realities, faces are interchangeable, and sex is a game played with laptop and webcam. Even his popular children's book illustrations consist of sequences that shift vertiginously from scene to scene. Banyai describes his art as “an organic combination of turn-of-the-century Viennese retro, interjected with American pop, some European absurdity added for flavor, served on a cartoon-style color palette . . . no social realism added.” That distinctive perspective informs every page of this striking book.

4 out of 5 stars Almost everything I hoped it would be. . ........2001-07-15

Although the artwork is more than up to par, in a good portion of the book, it's too small to enjoy it fully. If a magnifying glass was included with the purchase, it would be five stars all the way.

5 out of 5 stars A VISUAL FEAST.......2001-07-02

I'd better admit something before I start this review. I'm a friend of Istvan Banyai. We've been known to drink aviator cocktails in New York bars. We've laughed a lot. Both before taking off with the aviators and also in flight. Minus Equals Plus is a portfolio of Istvan's illustration work. On a functional level anyone will see that he's a master craftsman/draughtsman. But this sublime skill is easily overshadowed by his imagination and intellect which manifest themselves in the most jaw-droppingly brilliant flights of fancy and acute visual wit. At the heart of this playfulness(and, on occasion, more sinister excursions)is Istvan's ability to conjure up extraordinary and unexpected connections between objects/people/situations. As you turn the pages, you can feel your retinas smiling. "Zoom" is probably Istvan's most widely acclaimed work. A children's book which starts on a close-up image of a cockerel's crest and then takes you further and further from the original object and its context until you reach the final picture: planet earth seen from space. How? Read the book. This is Istvan working his magic for children. He's good for an adult audience too. His X-rated illustrations are very sexy. They're never smutty, always erotic. There's a curious innocence about the young man (or possibly young woman) performing cunnilingus on the (other?) woman. The 'performer' is standing, holding the 'performee' upside down. It's just as if the naked waltz they were enjoying went a little haywire. Oh, and this is all happening on television with the single viewer (face unseen) firmly in control of the remote. In another piece, couples grope (and more) each other at a party. Again it avoids being sleazy or laddish. There's a wonderful nonchalance about the whole scene, including the foreground fellatio. Minus Equals Plus is a feast for your eyes. Switching from visual wit to whimsy, sex to satire, surrealism to juxtapositionism. The thing about almost all of this book is its joyousness. Istvan's inclusion of work rejected by various clients and editors over the years is gleeful in itself. You can't help thinking he included it to lead you to only one possible conclusion. That this was their loss. The fools. And now is probably the right time to admit something else. Faced with such visual wealth, words really are so poor and inadequate. So give your eyes (and mind) a treat. They'll thank you for it.

        Book Description

Drawing and painting well is every artist's dream, whether professional or amateur, but this requires a strong grasp of theory, an understanding of the tricks of the trade, and guided practice. These guides offer each of those fundamentals through step-by-step exercises, drawings of specific cases that tend to cause the most difficulties, and models to paint that include steps from professional artists.

The richness of still-life paintings and the spatial qualities of interior scenes are discussed, with examples of using light and shade to master composition, harmonization, and interpretation techniques.

I laughed my butt off - Do you think I should apply for a refund? Do you think the product was defective some how? Was that supposed to happen? I've bought all of the Uncle John books, and have enjoyed them throughly. I've also noticed that a lot of the questions on "Who wants to be a millionaire", I have previously read the same information in one of Uncle John's books. Surprised the heck out of my kids when I can answer the questions that has the current contestant stumped.

The little tidbits on the bottom of the pages make excellent reading, too. And remember the motto-Going with the flow!

                  5 out of 5 stars Redemption.......2007-04-22

This is an excellent translation that reads easy. It is very thought provoking about contemporary western society. The grisly scenes of slaughterhouse production methods accompany those of interpersonal violence and in essence it revolves around a cyclical betrayal of trust. Franz tries to lead a simple life after his incarceration, but ignores the signs that could have prevented his greatest loss. Ultimately, I can only say what this book gave me - and it is that Franz finds redemption, and that it is of an utterly spiritual nature.

3 out of 5 stars I Tried to like this book...........2006-12-31

....but the problem is with the translation. Eugene Jolas' translation is horribly outdated, was in fact done in the early thirties. Nobody has even thought about re-translating what seems to me, in spite of the outdated, insipid colloqualisms, quite a very good, fascinating book. This is why I gave the book three rather than one or two.

5 out of 5 stars Read the book - then buy the Fassbinder film series.......2004-09-12

This is one of my favorite books. The characters of Franz and Reinhold are just so contrary and yet in a way so similar - you will come to many realizations over the course of the novel - it is repetitious and yet not excessive in its repetition (kind of like 'the hundred years of solitude')
By the way, you can find the Fassbinder film series on ebay - it is well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Best German Novel.......2002-05-24

This is the best German novel; mordant, dark, hilarious, packed with the fascinations of Modernism and modern urban life... Joycean literary technique applied by a historical realist to the social life in one of the world's great cities at a critical turning point in its history, it's as close as the German novel can get to Rabelais, Brecht, Joyce and Dickens at the same time. Here's to Franz Biberkopf!

3 out of 5 stars A few interesting insights but confusing and depressing.......2002-02-27

This 635-page German novel, written by Alfred Doblin and published in 1929, is set in an area of Berlin that no longer exists. In the 1920s, though, it was the hub of the city. The novel is the story of that time and place as well as the story of Franz Biberkopf, who has just been released from prison after serving four years for the murder of his girlfriend. He then becomes a street vendor but eventually turns to crime and has one misfortune after another. This narrative is surrounded by a lot of words spilling out of the author's mind including long surreal stream of conscious thoughts, references to Greek mythology and the bible, constant weather reports, and dozens of short side stories. The result is like an abstract painting, one that is not only confusing, but depressing.

The characters struggle, feel pain, and make horrible blunders in choices they make. Women are treated terribly but are just too stupid to care about. Franz actually loses his arm when run over by a car and later is confined to a mental institution, but I never could relate to him, his world, or his humanity. The author was a physician and a psychologist and the influence of these fields of study definitely permeate the book, which searches to understand the human condition and cruelty of the world. Considering when it was written, and the mood in Germany at the time, it is a foreshadowing of the future.

This book is considered a masterpiece. But to me it was just the unedited outpourings of the author's slightly warped mind. And yet, as I kept reading, I gradually got into its rhythms and appreciated some of its complexities. It brought me to a world I didn't care about, and a way of thinking that is overbearing and pretentious. I did gain a few insights though and I'm glad I got a glimpse of that world. But in spite of its few redeeming qualities, there is no way I can recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Guess What? That Wasn't Elvis in the Poolhouse in '78.......2002-02-01

Mystery "Elvis" recordings, mystery "Elvis" sightings, the kind of stuff which permeated the author's first book on the subject "Is Elvis Alive", is continued here - and so is the constant reference to her [inexplicably pulled] novel "Orion" about a superstars' plan to hoax his own death, but Elvis' actual role as Agent at Large for the DEA is examined and she convinces the reader that Elvis Presley was not some flake who liked to collect badges, a portrait painted by some from his past who seem to have a huge axe to grind these days. The details of Presley's unusual will are also presented and cause one to wonder if all the facts of Elvis' passing were originally revealed.
Brewer-Giorgio's third work on the subject, "Elvis Is Alive - And He's Coming Back" (The Anonymous Press) is much better.

The Elvis Files is an intriguing, closely researched, highly recommended account written especially for Elvis fans who want to learn more about the "King" in general, as much as they can behind what really happened at the tragic close of Elvis' public career in particular.

I have read and reread this book so many times, its amazing how much proof Gail has uncovered that Elvis is alive.I always believed that there was a cover up.I only hope that she will continue her investigation and keep all her loyal fans informed. It cant be over.

5 out of 5 stars I've always believed Elvis is still alive now theres proof.......1999-09-01

From the first page I read, I knew I wasn't alone on having the feeling that Elvis was alive long after his "death". Gail's investgation on this book has been well done. Like she says in her book, there have been too many "down to eath people" who have witnessed and have pictures of the man AFTER the man. And shame on the docters and hospital staff for overlooking and destroying valuable evidence of a recently dead SUPERSTAR unless it wasn't actually him. Let's face it a cover up as got to start somewhere! Gail's detailed information had to have come from many resources. I know most of her information is correct because I have read it in other books, one book had been by one of the investgaters on this very case, who also find to many holes in the Elvis Presley case and he wasn't much of a fan of him. I can only hope that Gail puts out another book on this case to let us know "IT'S STILL NOT OVER".

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put the book down!! Intense!.......1998-12-31

This book made me look at Elvis in a whole new way. It was so intriguing and mysterious. The documentation of the facts blew my mind! So many questions going unanswered, it makes one believe who can you trust to be the truth? I highly recommend this book to everyone that believes in the truth, not just what they see, hear, or want to believe. This book contains a mystery that may never be answered.

2 out of 5 stars Good advice but could be more tournament oriented.......2006-04-09

Firstly, I have to say that the credentials of the authors are absolutely unquestionable. Each author has had a very illustrious career playing tournament poker. However, the effort to translate their experience and knowledge to the written page has met with limited success. There are several key issues which prevent me from giving this book a higher rating:

                                (a) They combine limit and no limit hold 'em into a single volume - limit and no limit are completely different games and to cram them both into a single book demonstrates lack of foresight. It is possible much of the audience will only ever read half the book
                                (b) Very little of the book is devoted to outlining the different strategic considerations between cash games and tournaments. In tournament poker, it is critical to consider your stack size relative to other stacks as well as your stack size relative to the blinds. Playing Ace-King in a deep stack situation is very different to playing Ace-King in a shallow stack situation.
                                (c) Cloutier and McEvoy advocate a very conservative style. Whilst the book is meant to be a guide to how they play poker, I still think it is important to consider alternative styles of playing. For example, they advocate always checking Ace-King when the player has missed the flop. However suppose you play an aggressive brand of poker and you are acting behing a single, conservative opponent who has checked the flop. In this case a bet may be warranted. Subtle nuances like this are not discussed in sufficient detail.
                                (d) Some of the hand discussion is outright poor. For example, the treatment of middle pairs is very shallow. The book basically says "if there is any heat, get out". It doesn't discuss important issues such as position, texture of the flop and so forth.

At the end of the book there is a discussion of key hands from the World Series of Poker which I did enjoy. Overall, the book does provide some very solid advice but its primary drawback is that it takes a "cookie cutter" approach and doesn't discuss many of the subtleties of the game.

                                5 out of 5 stars GG.......2005-10-17

Good format. It is in an easy readable format to follow. I beleive its for the medium to advanced player. You need to have a working knowledge of the game. I have read many hold'em books and found this book to be the most sound. His approach and style are basically conservative, although he touches on the aggressive and super aggressive players. His explanations and reasoning on his methods are stellar and highly analytical. Throughout the entire book you will find buried treasures. You will not be able to put this book down.

4 out of 5 stars Same material as Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em.......2005-03-12

I really enjoyed Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em and was looking forward to reading this book. The book is about 1/2 limit hold'em hands and 1/2 no-limit hold'em hands. The no-limit hold'em hands are the same as the material presented in Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em. So if you are looking for different material on no-limit, this book is not it. It also contains actual hands played from many different WSOP championships, which are interesting. It's a good book, just not much different from Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for tournament players........2004-04-09

I bought this book a couple of months ago and found it to be an excellent book. Read this book first before reading a book like "Tournament Poker for Advanced Players" by Sklansky. This book will teach you how to play all the different hands in different postitions. It also has some great analysis of key hands played at the World Series of Poker.

                                Book Description

In 1995, almost 30 years after the premier of the original Star Trek®, Paramount Pictures aired a new Star Trek series. Star Trek: Voyager® was the flagship of its new network, UPN, and the first Star Trek created without the input and guidance of the franchise’s creator, Gene Roddenbery. In The Trekker’s Guide to Voyager, you’ll learn what goes on both behind and in front of the camera in the words of the people closest to the events.

Nowhere else will you find detailed biographies of the actors and production crew, complete character profiles, and in-depth specs on every alien in the Delta Quadrant. Learn exactly why Genevieve Bujold quit the role of Captain Janeway just 2 days after she began work on the show. Discover why Voyager is the fourth series (including Generations) in which Tim Russ appears. And just how far away is the Delta Quadrant, anyway? It’s all here—and nowhere else.

Plus, The Trekker’s Guide to Voyager features a special guide to the first two seasons of the show, along with a discussion of the oversights, inaccuracies, and outright blunders that mysteriously appear from time to time. Everything from confused camera angles to disappearing shoes to plot holes through which you could pilot a starship is covered in this comprehensive guide.

Totally uncensored, utterly fascinating, and intricately detailed, this book is the ultimate guide to Star Trek: Voyager®.

It is a book about Star Trek Voyager when is was bad. It covers only the first two seasons, obviously it is not updated. I detected some mistakes in the book, but i can't remember what they are. It has no photos, sorry. Half of the book uses reviews a interviews printed before in other magazines. The most interesting part of the book is the last one, it contains plot misfires of every episode..
