Book Description
This beautiful book focuses on Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. Beginning in 1902, Tiffany (1848–1933) designed every aspect of the immense home, which had eighty-four rooms and eight levels, and extensive grounds into which the house was carefully integrated. Tiffany’s residential masterpiece was also a quasi-museum, for he filled it with his own works—windows, glassware, pottery, enamels, lamps, oil paintings, and watercolors—as well as with objects from his collections of Islamic, Asian, and Native American art.
Laurelton Hall burned down in 1957, but about ten years earlier most of its contents had been removed and sold. Every aspect of the estate is examined and re-created in this volume: its terraced gardens with fountains and pools; the many outbuildings; and Tiffany’s life there. The interior decoration of Laurelton Hall, a particular focus of the book, is represented by both numerous period photographs and newly commissioned color photography of surviving artworks and salvaged architectural components from the estate. For all who admire Tiffany and his work, this book presents a unique portrait of his remarkable home.

Rush Limbaugh claims his talent is on loan. With this book, Franken demonstrates that he owns. The frankly Democratic author's shtick reminds us how much of a free ride conservatives have gotten in the mainstream media. For instance, he really drives home the weirdness of the conservatives' preachiness about "family values" in light of Newt Gingrich's and Bob Dole's first marriages, and Rush Limbaugh's first, second and third marriages. And he has great fun with Rush's and Newt's miraculous draft deferments in a chapter where he imagines all of the great conservative "chicken-hawks" out on a Vietnam war patrol under the leadership of Ollie North.
Book Description
In the grand satirical tradition of Swift, Rabelais, and Twain comes...
Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, and Other Observations
...
a scathing--but uncompromisingly fair--look at America's largest talk show host and the rest of the Republican right.
Penned by the Emmy award-winning Saturday Night Live writer whom John Podhoretz of the New York Post has called "the man responsible for some of the most brilliant political satire of our time," Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot tackles the issues--and the politicians--in ways few have dared...
Exploding Medicare Costs: "Why not shoot the elderly into space? Stay with me. Because I'm not just thinking about the budget here. I'm talking about science. Just think how many more manned space operations NASA could undertake if they didn't have to worry about getting the astronauts back."
Crime: "I have a radical gun-buyback idea that I guarantee would be a huge success. Here's how it works: hand in a gun, get a free vial of crack."
Newt Gingrich: "Many of us, like Newt, have acknowledged smoking dope and reading Toffler in the early 70s. But after reading his book, I think Newt's dirty little secret is that he smoked dope and watched The Jetsons."
Phil Gramm: "If you get beyond the fact the Gramm is ugly, mean, hypocritical, has a boob fetish, and drives his wife like a mule, he does have a certain folksy charm."
On the subject of Rush Limbaugh, Franken lets the facts speak for themselves. Listen to Rush, the "rugged individualist" and enemy of government handouts, explain how his second wife made him stop sitting around the house eating just food and go file for unemployment insurance. And learn all of Rush's several explanations for how he avoided the draft.
Of course, when it comes to draft-dodging Republicans, Rush isn't alone. Reading Al's Vietnam short story, "Operation Chickenhawk," you'll savor the exploits of Privates Limbaugh, Gramm, Quayle, Buchanan, Gingrich, and George Will as Lieutenant Oliver North leads them kicking and screaming into combat.
And don't miss Al's informative discussion with the man who has "the easiest job in America": Rush Limbaugh's fact-checker. And much, much more.
Customer Reviews:
Laugh out Loud Funny.......2007-08-02
I read this book and could not stop laughing. Al Franken was more comic then and just beginning to talk about politics. It deals with Rush Limbaugh and the shout show personalities. It also talks about the hypocracy of the then Republican Family Values platform. Especially considering the marital track records of prominent republicans at the time like Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole. And who can forget operation chicken-hawk?
I would suggest reading this in a place where you are free to laugh without disturbing others; I read this on vacation and got kicked of the deck of the ship for laughing too loud.
Strangely enough in light of Limbaugh's recent drug abuse and attacks on Obama's heritage and Gingrich's coming clean about extra-marital affairs this material still seems timely.
Funny, honest and critical.......2007-07-17
It isn't often that political pundits and commentators can really get one to laugh, but AL Franken, in his critical and honest look at Right-wing media and specifically Rush Limbaugh, got me laughing. His wit and even extreme, over-the-top attacks are well-written and funny.
Regardless of where you sit on the political fence, if you can take a step back, understand that this is a discourse of spin, it really is a fun ride.
Many of Al Franken's personal anecdotes are written in a style that allows for some great visuals. Some of these still have me laughing every time I hear the name: "Rush Limbaugh."
Makes Great Toilet Paper!.......2007-05-30
I got this book on clearance for $2.15 and what an investment it was! Just set this thing right next to the toilet and you'll have toilet paper for at least 2-3 weeks!
As if Stuart Smalley wasn't enough we get more brainless garbage from Al Franken... Air America is and always will be an embarrassing failure and so will Al Franken. But thanks anyway Al, I'm sure Rush appreciates all the publicity. He'll be laughing all the way to the bank.
Stick to SNL and leave the childish insults to the 5th graders at recess.
Now That I've Thought Better of It.......2007-03-08
Al Franken is intelligent, witty and informed and for those of us who were already sick to death of Rush Limbaugh's dreck when this book was released, it was a guilty pleasure. Yes, we knew the taunting was childish but on the other hand, we also knew Rush needed to be taken down a peg or two. Reason and facts weren't having the least effect, so why not hit him where it hurt?
However, with the benefit of hindsight, maybe it's not so funny to publicly humiliate people for their physical appearence. Especially when it results in the target trying so desperately to drop pounds, he becomes addicted to drugs (hey, fellow liberals, if we have enough compassion to support needle-exchange programs for street junkies, why do some of us have bumper stickers mocking R. L. for HIS drug problems?)
Neither is it very funny to contemplate the further degeneration of public discourse in this country. How can we complain about Ann Coulter and insist the Right renounce her unless we renouce the childish name-callers in our own ranks?
And so, although I agree with Franken's other, truly serious political critiques of the pundits, on my bookshelf, this particular title has worn out its welcome.
A great read.......2006-07-14
First of all, I must admit that I am a little biased in my rating. I have read most of Al Franken's books and listen to him on Air America (and am always informed and entertained). But with that said, I still believe it's a fair review.
While I understand some are offended by the rather blunt nature of the writing, please remember that this book is written by a comedian who often uses satire and irony to make a (not so subtle) point.
Rush Limbaugh, along with many other conservatives and liberals , use personal attacks in place of well-reasoned arguments. It is so much easier to go after people than it is to go after ideas, especially when you happen to hold the less thoughtful idea. Franken's book is well-researched and the points he makes are thoroughly explained. The ironic use of name-calling and such is what keeps this book entertaining. Otherwise it would leave many readers depressed/ashamed/alarmed by the direction in which such unscrupulous figures as Limbaugh are trying to drag unsuspecting Americans.
Book Description
In the past decade, the mass media discovered disability. Spurred by the box-office appeal of superstars such as the late Christopher Reeve, Michael J. Fox, Stephen Hawking, and others, and given momentum by the success of Oscar-winning movies, popular television shows, best-selling books, and profitable websites, major media corporations have reversed their earlier course of hiding disability, bringing it instead to center stage.
Yet depictions of disability have remained largely unchanged since the 1920s. Focusing almost exclusively on the medical aspect of injury or illness, the disability profile in fact and fiction leads inevitably to an inspiring moment of "overcoming." According to Riley, this cliche plays well with a general audience, but such narratives, driven by prejudice and pity, highlight the importance of "fixing" the disability and rendering the "sufferer" as normal as possible. These stories are deeply offensive to persons with disabilities. Equally important, misguided coverage has adverse effects on crucial aspects of public policy, such as employment, social services, and health care.
Powerful and influential, the media is complicit in this distortion of disability issues that has proven to be a factor in the economic and social repression of one in five Americans. Newspapers and magazines continue to consign disability stories to the "back of the book" health or human-interest sections, using offensive language that has long been proscribed by activists. Filmmakers compound the problem by featuring angry misfits or poignant heroes of melodramas that pair love and redemption. Publishers churn out self-help titles and memoirs that milk the disability theme for pathos. As Riley points out, all branches of the media are guilty of the same crude distillation of the story to serve their own, usually fiscal, ends.
Riley's lively inside investigation illuminates the extent of the problem while pinpointing how writers, editors, directors, producers, filmmakers, advertisers and the executives who give their marching orders go wrong, or occasionally get it right. Through a close analysis of the technical means of representation, in conjunction with the commentary of leading voices in the disability community, Riley guides future coverage to a more fair and accurate way of putting the disability story on screen or paper. He argues that with the "discovery" by Madison Avenue that the disabled community is a major consumer niche, the economic rationale for more sophisticated coverage is at hand. It is time, says Riley, to cut through the accumulated stereotypes and find an adequate vocabulary that will finally represent the disability community in all its vibrant and fascinating diversity.

Has it all.......2006-02-22
Open questions to all Sudoku publishers: If I'm doing Sudoku on a train or plane, do I want to carry a book with 900 puzzles? If I need to erase frequently, do I want a book printed on cheap newsprint that gets holes after one erasure? Or one where the reverse images of numbers on the opposing page show through the paper and confuse me? No, no, no. Gould's sudoku books are for people like me, who want small compact puzzle books on good clear paper.
From the Board Games Editor at BellaOnline.com.......2005-12-06
I was a little bit thrown off by the title of this book, when I picked it up I assumed that it would be mostly very difficult sudoku puzzles. Actually, it's a variety of levels, which is totally fine by me. I enjoy more difficult puzzles when I have time to sit down and work through the whole thing (sometimes 2 or 3 times, if I mess it up), and I enjoy easier puzzles for coffee breaks and other times when I only have 10 or 15 minutes.
These are hand-developed Sudoku, and they actually do feel a little bit different to work out than computer-generated ones. In any case, this is a great collection.
Book Description
Though he was a familiar Church leader for many years before becoming pope, there has been little awareness of the spiritual side of Benedict XVI. Now for the first time readers are given a brilliant overview of the Pope’s most inspirational teachings in Let God’s Light Shine Forth. Editor Robert Moynihan offers a brief introduction to the life and work of Pope Benedict XVI and then presents an absorbing collection of his most persuasive words.
Within these pages, Pope Benedict XVI introduces a God who is good, beautiful, and true, the fountain of all life. The most important thing for each person, in Benedict’s view, is to discover and develop a loving relationship with God, because this is the way to the deepest and most lasting happiness that human beings can experience. Even in our darkest moments, he teaches, we can have hope that all things will ultimately work out in a wonderful way to show God’s glory and bring blessedness to individual men and women.
Many of these selections deal specifically with questions such as: Who is God? How we can know him? What does he wants us to do and to be? Having spent his entire life thinking, studying, and praying about such questions, Benedict has become perhaps the leading contemporary theologian (the word literally means “knower of God”) in the Roman Catholic Church. From his earliest work as a teacher to his first words as leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict’s vision of hope is powerfully summarized in Let God’s Light Shine Forth.
Customer Reviews:
An informative but uneven sampling.......2007-01-21
I found the first part of this book, a brief biography/interview of the Pope with the editor, to be enlightening and inspiring. I don't know why, but it hadn't crossed my mind that Benedict grew up in Nazi Germany, so the account of his childhood and of how his family maintained their faith despite the fascist war ideology is a real eye-opener.
However, I found the larger second part, devoted to little snippets from interviews, articles, and books, to be less helpful. Most of the quotes are very short, no more than a paragraph or two. Plucked from their original context, they make for a terribly uneven introduction to Benedict's work and thought: sometimes illuminating, sometimes unclear. I think I would have preferred it if the editor had continued in the same vein as Part One, putting a bit of shape and coherence to the original material.
Provides Great Understanding of the new Holy Father........2005-07-19
This is an excellent work which provides information on the Holy Father and summarizes his views from previous written works. As then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger he published nearly 50 books on the Church. He truly is "hands-on" and clearly understands what is going on in the Church outside of Rome. A quick and easy read that will bring you up to date on Benedict XVI.
An Accurate Sense of the New Pope.......2005-06-28
Robert Moynihan gives us an accurate overview of the vision of Pope Benedict. The first part of the book gives us a sense of the background and values of the new Pope based on the Pope's past writings and interviews and based on Moynihan's own repeated conversations with Benedict when he was a cardinal. The second part is a topical collection of the Pope's views on many issues ranging from various theological dogmas to matters of morality to issues in the Christian life such as suffering and loneliness. The third and last part of the book consists of a reprinting of the first messages and homily of the new Pope from that extraordinary month of April 2005. You will get a good sense about the new Pope's vision from this book. Personally, I was struck by the Pope's strong views on the urgency of liturgical reform and on the centrality of defending human dignity.

Book Description
Betty Shine died in April 2002 of heart failure, a bitter irony for a woman who had devoted much of her life to healing others, and who not only spoke from the heart but acted from it, too. Having spent the last decade of her life committing her thoughts and tales of her incredible experiences to paper, producing 11 popular and often best-selling books, Betty had begun experimenting with a new outlet for her philosophy of life - writing poetry. This final book from Betty Shine collects together nearly 100 of Betty's poems, and is introduced by her daughter, Janet, who worked closely with Betty and has inherited many of her psychic gifts. Janet also provides a short introduction to each poem, which allows the reader an insight into the background to each one.
