3 out of 5 stars Not as in-depth as one would hope.......2003-08-19

This book is probably only for the die-hard Hemingway completest, although I believe it was a
best seller when it was first published in 1962. While it does have some information on Ernest
Hemingway that I have not seen elsewhere, it also skims over a lot of important events of which
one would think Leicester would have intimate knowledge.

For example, each of Ernest's divorces are barely mentioned. There are hints of trouble in the
various marriages, although rarely do any details emerge. We are just told that a particular
marriage ended and that Ernest subsequently remarried. Also rather maddening is the fact that
while the events are laid in chronological order, there are rarely any dates tied to many of the
referenced events.

It is also rather obvious that Leicester is avoiding a number of issues similar to the events
surrounding the divorces. He seems to race through the details of Ernest's last months, although
to his credit he does discuss the shock treatments. But he gives us no real insight into what was
troubling Ernest. Is this because he has no intimate knowledge of that period or because he is
trying to protect his brother's legacy in some way? Or was it case of trying to avoid potential
lawsuits, since many of the people mentioned in the book were still alive when it was first
published?

Some of the passages in the book are very confusing, particularly a few where Leicester is
recounting conversations. Either they had some kind of code between themselves that we are left
to decipher or, for all his brilliance as a writer, Ernest was not much of a conversationalist (which
kind of flies in the face of all the entertaining and partying he did throughout his life).

It is also unclear, perhaps deliberately so since the book is about Ernest, as to what successes
Leicester had in trying to follow in his famous brother's footsteps. There are references to Ernest
reviewing Leicester's attempts at writing, but nothing to indicate if Leicester ever published
anything beyond this book. This may be because the book is focused on Ernest, rather than
Leicester, but it would be nice to know what successes Leicester may or may not have had.

None of the above should dissuade the Hemingway fan from reading the book. I did enjoy
reading the book, but it is almost maddening in the number of details that are left out. Leicester
just kind of leaves you asking for more.

3 out of 5 stars not well written.......2002-12-12

sad to admit, hard to say--but not well written at all. truth is ernest was the only writer in the family. what can you do? it still may be worth reading to some in order to get his younger brother's perspective on things, etc.

4 out of 5 stars My Brother, Ernest Hemingway.......2000-02-01

This is an excellent book. It allows you to see a side of Hemingway that you never had just from reading his beautifully written books.

5 out of 5 stars A fine and readable biography of his brother.......2000-01-01

This was the first full length biography of Ernest Hemingway. His brother, Les, was aware of Ernest's mental and physical problems and that he didn't want any biographies written about him during his lifetime. When Ernest shot and killed himself in the summer of 1961, Les had this book ready to go to the publisher. Leicester was a fine writer and as a man was a life bringer who always raised the spirits of his companions. This quality can be felt in his book. It is quite well written and offers a glimpse into the life of an enormously complicated man who was also a dedicated artist. And Les's biography remains a very fine introduction to his brother's life, one of our greatest American writers.

                        Book Description

Lost in love and don't know much? Paul Feig knew even less...

Like any other red-blooded, straight young man, Paul Feig spent much of his teenage years trying to solve the mystery of women. Unlike most red-blooded, straight teenage boys, however, Paul Feig was sadly at a considerable disadvantage. He was tall and gangly. He had a love for musical theater. And, perhaps the death knell for his burgeoning sex life, Paul was a tap dance student. (And we have the pictures to prove it—see the front cover.)

Infused with the same witty and infectiously readable style of his first book, Kick Me, Superstud chronicles the trials and tribulations of Feig’s young dating life with all the same excruciating detail as an on-air gastric bypass—and you just won’t be able to tear yourself away. Feig’s series of shudder-to-think but oddly familiar (come on—we’ve all been dumped by someone we didn’t even like that much) anecdotes include: his first date, at an REO Speedwagon concert with the most endowed girl in school, who leaves him sitting next to a puddle of puke; his first breakup, accomplished by moving across the country; his mortifying date with his secretly bigoted girlfriend; his discovery of a new self-love technique that almost lands him in the hospital; and his less-than-idealistic “first time,” which he nevertheless elevates to biblical proportions.

In Superstud, Paul Feig tells all in a hilarious but true testament to geekdom, love, and growing up.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The truest account of the sex lives of young men.......2007-09-16

Feig has done what is seemingly impossible: He has topped his first book.

The relatability of Feig's experiences is again the main attraction. This book is about the "Kick Me" growing up and dealing with the problems of libido and the need for sexual satisfaction. These stories rang true, because Feig's experiences are shared ones that a lot of young adult males have. This book is about him having sex, but like most guys, he wants it to be right when it happens. For example, we have the story of his first overeager girlfriend, who he escapes only by moving to California for the summer. Feig's description of the circumstances and the actual experience of his first time is one of the most authentic accounts I have ever found in print.

As in "Kick Me", Feig's way with words makes the essays in this book snappy and humorous. The turns of phrase are what can make an ordinary sentence laugh out lound funny. It is no wonder that he is a part of the team that created 'Freaks and Geeks'.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what adolescent and young adult males' lives are really like. The book will make the reader laugh, but also cringe with recognition of things that he himself or a fellow man has done.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Paul Feig.......2007-06-20

These are writings that can strengthen a young man as he laughs his way towards healing.

                        5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-05-28

This book, as well as his first book (Kick Me), was very funny. I enjoyed it and so did everyone I have lent it to.

                        5 out of 5 stars A truly fun read...........2007-01-11

This story sounds so much like my own adolescence that I was truly amazed. I couldn't recommend this more highly.

                        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious..........2006-07-08

I just finished reading the book and I truly loved it.

The author has chosen to share some of his most embarassing adolescent moments in the book and for this I am grateful. I don't think that I have laughed so much in such a long time.

I am very much looking forward to reading the author's other book "Kick Me", I am hopeful that it will be just as enjoyable.

I own THREE other Flash books AND took a 2 Day course a year ago, and this book has taught me more than all the others combined in my first day of use. Well written, easy to follow, the lessons are in a LOGICAL order that make sense to someone who does not know Flash. Terrific book if you need to learn Flash. I wish I had found it before I wasted time and money on the other books and the course! You won't waste your money with this one. I wish Adobe would hire this guy...he understands Flash and knows how to explain it.

                        4 out of 5 stars Sam's in the classroom.......2007-02-13

Hi, I'm using this textbook in a classroom with some Grade 10 students, and to teach myself Flash as well. I find the book good over all, but some of the exercises have been difficult. The instructions don't work as written sometimes, and I have to 'feel around' the program to figure out what I'm supposed to do to get the expected result. I'm not sure if that's because I'm not understanding things clearly, or if I have a slightly different version of Flash. The book is for Flash MX 2004 and I have Flash MX 2004 professional. I don't know if that would make a difference. The book is a comprehensive introduction broken into manageable lessons. The kids find the exercises fairly manageable, but the lessons in between the exercises are written at a bit of a high reading level for them.

4 out of 5 stars Great launching pad..........2006-08-10

Kerman pretty much hit it on the head for me to get started authoring computer-based training in Flash. He explains things concisely and succinctly.

Pretty much a "to the point" kind of tutorial book. Although, it would have been nice to have a companion CD, Kerman has placed many of the excercises on a website for book owners. He has also been extremely accessible.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Good until you get to the actionscripting part.......2006-02-22

I was going through this book fairly well untilllllllllll.......... I came to the actionscripting chapters. Some work fine but I kept coming to exercises where I kept saying what the *#&^ am I doing wrong! I thought the big problem was I has flash mx instead of flash mx 2004, I guess I was wrong. As I read the other users reviews I discovered there are a lot of errors. I would have recommended this book but not anymore. Don't get this book unless you want to use it as a target from frustration.

Oh and you cannot get the downloads to work.

2 out of 5 stars Good if you get it from the local Library for free.......2006-02-08

Useful book, but not ereror checked thoroughly and not consistent and clear in its presentation. Books dealing with action script and code must be concise and thoroughly tested. This book was not. Glad I didn't pay for it.

                        Book Description

The essence of blues and rock and roll, with legends like Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Elvis Presley, and James Brown as only Stanley Booth could portray them.

Here are Stanley Booth's acclaimed writings about the South and the music that emanates from it. Rythm Oil--you don't have to know how to spell "rhythm" to have it in your body and soul--is a potion sold on Beale Street in Memphis. The home of Sun Records, B.B. King, Elvis Presley, Howlin' Wolf, and Jerry Lee Lewis, Memphis is also the home of fantastic stories and broke-down dreams. As Booth makes his way from Memphis to the Mississippi Delta to the depths of the Georgia woods exploring the sounds, the music, and the culture of the American South, "he has produced some of the most gracefully written, thoughtful, and thought-stirring musings on the characters--the famous and the forgotten, the infamous and the unknown--who command the kingdom or drift through the shadowland of the South's rich-chorded patrimony" (Nick Tosches, Los Angeles Times).

Like Norman Mailer's portait of Picasso, this book should be titled Memphis/Booth leaving it slightly ambiguous as to the true topic of the book. Stanley Booth approaches his subjects in this collection of essays about "the music of the American South" with adoration but with each sentence you get the feeling that Booth feels the need to impress upon the reader that he is worthy of writing about these subjects. His need to belong makes some of the essays unreadable as Booth will spend most of the text naming records that he "grew up listening to", defending his use of black vernacular as being the way "we (southerners)" speak, condemning Yankees, etc. Once you get past that there's some mildly interesting information, nothing too new, especially if you're a music fan. The chapters on Phineas Newborn and James Brown are interesting. As a Southern music lover, I found the book too much about Booth and not enough about music. This book, sadly, seems to be more for the people he tries to distance himself from in the book - northerners with limited exposure to black Southern music. Southerners will find that he tries a bit too hard.

This book really captured the true essence of the influence of Memphis on the world music scene. Popular music is poorly written about and is normally glamorized or scandalized. This book really seems to capture the true essence of the music, the musicians, and the times. This book was so interesting to me I went to Memphis last summer on vacation and went to many of the old out of the way musical history spots in Memphis.

5 out of 5 stars Author Booth breaks back, spirit in attempt to convey music.......1997-10-28

Stanley Booth has always sacrificed something for his work; whether it's his health or his sanity or his relationships but never his sense of humour. Rythm Oil takes its shape as an overview of Memphis, living on through yellow fever and famine, the death of all its musical heroes, who as it happened, came to Memphis and died there or who were born there and who left never to return. Even Booth, who today lives in Georgia, his home state, can't seem to find it in his heart to repudiate this strange and fascinating town with its greasy river that recently claimed another musical hero, Jeff Buckley. Memphis is a town of contradictions: its streets run north-south and its avenues run east-west, something Priscilla Presley never knew. "It's like she lived in a cocoon," remarks Booth, talking to his mother who replies "She did, it was on top of her head."

Booth seems to have written this book in his own blood. He lived among and through many of the people who's stories he tells. Booth shows Memphis to be the fountain from which popular music has flowed across the years and the world. Booth exposes the roots of rock & roll, soul and even country music with love and devotion

Booth travels to the funeral of master bluesman John Hurt with slide-guitar virtuoso Furry Lewis, a man steeped in Southern history. Here is Memphis, a small town still living through the traumas of the Civil War and yellow fever, inspiring memories of riverboats, medicine shows, murder, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Otis Redding, the Bar-Kays, and James Brown.

                                Book Description

A famous card expert demonstrates tricks that have left theater audiences amazed, and that card-playing professionals have used profitably. It is not a book for beginners. But these shifts, palms, glides, false shuffles, cuts, fans, steals and spectacular deceptions will help those with basic card expertise reach new levels of performance. Over 300 photos show Buckley’s exact hand positions during each move.

                                Customer Reviews:

                                4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-03-17

Pretty good book with a variety of unique card sleights (palming, manipulating cards in the deck, etc.). These sleights are the 'real work', so it will take a little perseverance. Many of these utility sleights are ones that you ought to know if you want to be a card sleight-of-hand worker.

The instructions are generally clear, but sometimes a detail here and there gets a little confusing. There's a fair number of photos showing how to do many of the sleights.

Sometimes a sleight is a little more complicated than it needs to be. My recommendation is to follow the author's steps in slow-motion with a deck of cards in hand. After you are familiar with the overall effect, you can make adjustments based on what your comfortable with. There may also be other newer methods for learning these sleights if you want to invest in newer card sleight instruction (such as the Daryl Encyclopedia of Card Sleights videos, etc.).

Right now, I'm working on the side steal sleight. He gives a T. Nelson Downs version which has some merit, but it is much more complicated than necessary. The author's own version is a little more do-able. But even the author's method becomes a little too fidgety, so I've made minor modifications to make it work well for me. I start in slow-motion, counting through the substeps to keep pace while I do the move (1..2..3..4). Then I repeat it until I can bring it up to full speed.

If you want to learn sleights for cheap, try this book. You may have to pick and choose through the sleights, and there may be better methods to perform some of these sleights now, but it's not bad for under $10.

5 out of 5 stars Buckley was a card mommer.......2002-04-28

When I unexpectedly came across a picture of Buckley on the first page of the book, and after hearing the other reviews of how difficult and advanced the techniques in the book were, I couldn't believe my eyes. I was surprised to see the face of a handsome teenager, of which my previous impression was COMPLETELY the opposite to the one I held in my hands. And this guy was a professional card magician at the age of 18, and able to do tricks infront of hundreds of people on-stage in 1908!

I have a feeling that this guy's mystery and skill probably gained him significant success with girls his age. The mysterious effects of these difficult to execute sleights are priceless and dazzling beyond belief. If a 3 columns card trick can make girls believe in magic.. then Buckley's stuff probably knocked their socks off... literally! Believe me, this guy would be able to blow David Blaine out of the water and make him look like Bob Longe.

That being said and out of the way, the book itself is amazing. There are very clearcut photos of Buckley's hands and very impressive card tricks, or as he calls them in the fourth section, "Card Experiments". Best of all, this book isn't like most others where the authors seem to purposely be vague (S.W. Erdnase) and not give the best descriptions. Mr. Buckley gives you every detail and is your friend throughout the book, showing you exactly how everything is done without any confusion.

And there is SO much different good stuff in here, that you'll probably never need another book for advanced materials.

It is a great book and a great reference to help you on your way to card excellence and showmanship. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Very advanced, but as good as it gets.......2001-08-04

If you've mastered Hugard and Braue's stuff, if you can do 60 classic passes per minute, if you have all the time in the world to devote to card sleight of hand, then this is the book for you! Seriously, this is a truly excellent book. Buckley's sleights, though not for the faint of heart, are superb. (He must've been one heckuva cardician!) This is a serious, serious card magic book. But if you are serious yourself, you'll get it. Of course, you'll overlook the antiquated prose and Buckley's tremendous ego throughout. (When you read this material you'll forgive Buckley's self-congratulatory tone.) This is a splendid work for those who want to be the best...

5 out of 5 stars You better know what you're getting into.......2000-10-16

I've yet to see a bad review for this book, and there's a reason. This book is terrific. There is however one issue to be addressed. This book is hard!!! Definitely not for beginners, it has some of what I believe are the greatest but hardest card manipulations out there. I definitely recommend it however to the serious card magic enthusiast. There are enough valuable ideas in here to last you a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Begginers.......2000-05-25

This book by Arthur Buckley is amazing.

It has loads of fantastic card sleights, whilst they do need a lot of practice it is worthwhile, as once you have them in your fingers they will never be forgotten.

All of these slieghts are extremely useful. The book is divided into different sections of tricks.

There are tricks for close up and for stage although some may need some imagination to update them, also there is a special section on crooked gambling.

All in all a good book with lots of photographs of Buckleys hands, he was a great card worker.

Buy it if you already know all the basics of card magic well.

                                  Book Description

Offering the first book-length exploration of network television's relations with advocacy groups, Kathryn C. Montgomery presents a comprehensive picture of the impact of organized pressure on prime-time TV. She vividly describes, for example, how the Catholic Church campaigned against Maude's abortion on the TV show, Maude; how outraged actors mobilized a national protest against the portrayal of blacks in the TV miniseries, Beulah Land; and how the Moral Majority waged a sophisticated campaign to "clean up TV," by threatening to boycott advertisers. Exposing the inner workings of network television as no other book has done, Montgomery's study demonstrates how behind-the-scenes struggles have shaped the images, messages, and values that enter people's homes every night. The book also raises critical questions about television's role in our society and its responsibility to the American public.
