Book Description
While talking heads debate the media’s alleged conservative or liberal bias, award-winning journalist Bonnie Anderson knows that the problem with television news isn’t about the Left versus the Right-- it’s all about the money. From illegal hiring practices to ethnocentric coverage to political cheerleading, News Flash exposes how American broadcast conglomerates’ pursuit of the almighty dollar consistently trumps the need for fair and objective reporting. Along the way to the bottomline, the proud tradition of American television journalism has given way to an entertainment-driven industry that’s losing credibility and viewers by the day.
As someone who has worked as both a broadcast reporter and a network executive, Anderson details how the networks have been co-opted by bottom-line thinking that places more value on a telegenic face than on substantive reporting. Network executives—the real power in broadcast journalism—are increasingly employing tactics and strategies from the entertainment industry. They "cast" reporters based on their ability to "project credibility," value youth over training and experience, and often greenlight coverage only if they can be assured that it will appeal to advertiser-friendly demographics.

Environmental Organic Chemistry
Winner of the AAP/PSP Award for Best New Chemistry Book in 1994
Designed for anyone investigating organic compounds and pollutants in the environment, Environmental Organic Chemistry lucidly describes how molecular interactions and macroscopic transport phenomena determine the distribution in space and time of organic compounds released into the natural environment. Truly multidisciplinary in its approach, this book shows the reader how to quantify these processes using the principles of chemistry, physics, and biology in a macroscopic environment. Background review material, the use of current concepts and data, the organization of chapters into elementary and advanced sections, and extensive references make this the ideal resource for beginning researchers as well as practicing professionals.
A companion volume, Environmental Organic Chemistry: Illustrative Examples, Problems, and Case Studies, provides an abundance of supplementary materials that enrich and extend this work.

Chomsky was right, and Anderson has the proof........2004-08-04
From her insiders view of the whole industry, Bonnie
Anderson delivers a searing indictment of our corrupt,
sensationalistic television news. She lays out fact
by fact, and name by name, just how, why, and most
importantly who is to blame for this once esteemed
institution's downward slide into the very muck it
used to deplore. For years, Noam Chomsky's theories
about the corruption of the news media have grown less
alarmist and eerily more prescient as the
infotainment age reaches its belligerent maturity.
But while Chomsky was lecturing about it, Ms. Anderson
was out in the field living it. She recounts, with a
journalist's eye for detail, all that went astray
within our large media conglomerates. The cast of
characters are all to familiar, Browkaw, Jennings,
Schwarzenegger, Striesand, O.J., Clinton, Leo,
Lewinsky, and Lettermen, as Ms. Anderson makes a
compelling case for the media's distortion from a
revered source of accurate information to an
increasingly grotesque and obvious fountain of
entertainment. "If it bleeds it leads" is the mantra
of newsrooms of our day, and may truth and rational
perspective be damned. Everything of value is
jettisoned in light of shocking and sensational video
footage about any subject, no matter how irrelevant
and trivial. No one will hear about the latest civil war in
Africa when every second of news time is dedicated to
footage of a shark attack in Florida, human interest
stories, a surfing cat, or another excessive
Hollywood wedding.
Read, because the suits at CNN don't want you to.......2004-07-17
This is the definite cluetrain (doc searls et al)for broadcasTV news. Much the same way cluetrain sparked a marketing revolution, this does the same for broadcast journalism.
I first meet the author when she was interning for Florida Today in Cocca Beach.
Every point she makes in this book is vaild. The take on "fox fair and balanced" tells me she won't be on the O'Reilly factor anytime soon.
I found only one sort of error. FYI> Matt Lauer does have a broadcast journalism background on the local level. He came out of the same environment that former NBC correspondent and current talk show host (WBUR Boston) Robin Young did, PM Magazine at WJAR TV 10 in Providence Rhode Island. That's the only small flaw I could find in the book.
The suits at CNN don't want you to read the book. They are not happy campers and with good reason. The hollywood suits trashed the network big time, and with than came the opening for Fox news to fill. Rick Kaplan is currently doing the same thing for MSNBC that he did for CNN take it down the pike.
It's a fast read but once you start you wont' want to stop.
Journalistic Integrity Revisited........2004-07-11
News Flash appears as a rising meteor against a field of weakening stars. Ms. Anderson's book takes the reader through the shenanigans of the TV news broadcasters in their unadulterated striving for place and profits while leaving behind journalistic investigation and integrity. Her words turn out to be an exciting journey of personal experience and incisive exposure.
As a long time news journalist Ms. Anderson sets a fair bar for news organization to reach. Her experiences and reporting often show just how good news organization can function. The same intimacy exposes the petty, inexcusable machinations of networks in journalistic decline.
Ms. Anderson's news flashes exposes the perfidy of CNN's executive wing in its Tailwind scandal, the staging of news as presented by NBC's Dateline story on General Motors in 1992 and the apparent homophobia of Roger Mudd given his attitude toward AIDS victims. But indeed, Ms Anderson is not a muckraker. On the contrary, hers is to excite the industry to better, to reset the standard of TV journalism. She gives as examples her own series on drought and famine in Africa bringing a change in American policy on humanitarian aid, or of CNN's initiative in covering the return of twenty-four U.S. Navy spy plane crewmen held in China. While these could be considered scoops, her admiration for her industry is best held by her words on the, "spectacular breaking news coverage of the 9/11 attacks."
Ms. Anderson words border on the requirement for broadcast journalism to return to its traditional values and to assure the public a clear and unbiased presentation of the news. Ms. Anderson carries the fight to those in the industry already sullying news broadcasts as entertainment and who have diluted their own professionalism for money, position, or simply hubris.
The True Story.......2004-07-06
Bonnie Anderson's book has brought to the light of day what I have felt has been a problem with the media for some time. Many of the newscasts are more concerned with form, not substance; how they look and not what they say. Her book is a very good read and pulls no punches in pointing out the way many in the media are more concerned with entertainment than hard news coverage. Her description of this type of coverage as "Infotainment" is right on point.
News Flash brings to the reader another big problem influencing news coverage which is how mega mergers are affecting the coverage that is being presented to the viewing public. Unfortunately the impact is not good and these large conglomerates are proving the old adage "bigger is not always better" to be very true.
From her experience at CNN as a reporter, managing director of a news division and Vice President of Recruitment and Training, Anderson offers the reader a unique perspective as to what goes on inside a large news organization. She provides an in depth look at what takes place behind closed doors when it comes to hiring, firing and staffing in today's media corporations and much of what she reveals should be quite disturbing to the viewing public. This book provides some very interesting statistics about the media and its management which I am sure most of us were never aware of.
While Anderson points out numerous things that are wrong with today's TV media and its management, she also brings out the good that the true journalist can and should do. At the end of the book she offers her thoughts on what the media can do to provide the viewing public with quality news coverage. She should be commended for taking a stand and bringing to our attention the problems and proposing solutions to get TV journalism back to the quality we need and deserve.
In light of Anderson's criticism of the TV networks and cable news channels, it will be interesting to see if any of the media will afford her the same opportunity to present her views as they did when Bernard Goldberg published his book on bias in the media. If they do not, shame on the media, again.
exposed.......2004-07-04
Finally---an insider with enough intestinal fortitude to call a sham a sham!!! One can just imagine the 6 o'clock news being primmed, powdered and perfumed with just enough tear (or smile) to make it palatibly entertaining. Ms. Anderson, with her years of experience and credibility, still believes that the American citizenry is due the news, the whole news, and nothing but the news. Reserve the spin and "holy cows" for the baseball commentators! If the media execs remain stoically entrenched in the annals of the entertainment world, then let them be reminded of the old radio classic, Dragnet, where the byline was...."the facts, Ma'am, just the facts".

Customer Reviews:
Great book!!.......2007-02-02
I recieved this book for Christmas, and being a fan of Monty Python, and Eric Idle especially, it was a joy to read. Eric Idle is a fantastic writer, and it's nice to get to see the world the way he sees it. Some of my favorite parts of the book were his stories he told about George Harrison and himself. The book is great for fans, or anyone who'd like a laugh (or a cry.).
A Surprising Gem.......2006-08-28
Well, I picked up this book expecting a fast, pithy read from one of the great comics of recent memory. I also expected that he would focus on his annoyance with America (which he does to some extent) and his interactions with the audience.
Sure, he does give one some observations, however I was more impressed by this book than I ever expected to be. That's why I am writing this review, dear reader. Idle's description of the American countryside is well, at times, sheer poetry. I was surprised that I wanted to see these parts of the country for myself after reading his affectionate odes to them.
The most poignant thing about this work is that it is the work of a man (as he admits) who is at the end of his comedic career, but still wants to celebrate every moment he has left. His allusions to his personal relationships with his wife, daughter and the tragic deaths of his mother and father took me totally aback. I actually feel I garnered some true insight into this man. That's a difficult thing for comedians to do when they write a book, in my personal reading experience.
I really would highly recommend this book, and, I can't believe I am writing this, the main reason is because I found this book actually inspirational. A lovely story of a man who triumphed over tragedy and, in the end, reveals what many would never contemplate: this guy is just like the rest of us, insecure and not immune to the slings and arrows of life. Highly recommended. And no, I am not his agent :)
One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time.......2006-08-20
I laughed out loud at this story of Eric Idle's bus tour for his Broadway show Spamalot. I've sent this book as a gift to several people and insisted they read it.
The book shows a cult celebrity who is indeed overly full of himself.......2006-04-20
The way Idle in his book badly treats anyone who saw his performance but didn't care for it shows how truly stuck up he is. Everyone over 10 who watches his performances has to believe he's every bit as great as he thinks he is or he gets negative about it. The drawing of Idle as a lady is thankfully missing from the new paperback version.
To the most recent reviewer here before me I say this. George Harrison was part of the arguably biggest bunch of musicians in history (The Beatles). There was a moment in the 1960's when almost every youngster in the US, England and Australia
between 13 and 18 years of age was into the Beatles. There was never a moment when the Pythons had such a fan following. Comparisons between Beatles and Pythons are ridiculous.
When Idle's time comes the only people who'll blab about him in their own books would be the surviving Pythons (even Carol Cleveland).
Just what you'd expect..........2006-04-05
I don't know why reviewers are constantly "surprised" by the serious writings of comedians. Great comedians have always been very serious people, and I think a lot of comedians' best work has been more dramatic than comedic, including Robin Williams in "Good Will Hunting" and "Fisher King" as well as Jim Carrey in "Truman Show" and "Man on the Moon".
This book establishes this fact yet again. Eric Idle is a hilarious and seemingly wonderful guy, but he's obviously quite philosophically inclined. You can't write a great philosopher drinking song unless you're already acquainted with those philosophers. As he admits in this book, comedy was a defense mechanism by which he coped with what sounds like a harsh childhood. He raised that coping mechanism to an art form.
I really enjoyed this book simply because I could spend a few hours sharing the thoughts of a smart, funny man, whose work I've always admired. It's a diary. It rambles a bit. It's serious, funny, witty, poignant and at times a bit too much, but that's why I think it's probably an accurate depiction of the mind of Eric Idle. You don't write the sketches Monty Python gave us while wielding the mind of a charter accountant.
Cheers. Buy the book, and I think you'll enjoy it a lot. The tribute to George Harrison was beautiful, and I'm sure there will be many to pay similar tribute to Eric when his day comes.

I recommend it.......2007-07-05
I bought this book for my cousin who wants to start out in the movie business. I bought this book for him so he can get a good idea who's who in the industry. The resources are a little out dated, but the valuable info is timeless.
Buy this Book.......2007-06-11
If you are serious about a career in the entertainment industry, this book is more valuable than a college education. I can honestly say that this book gives you all of the advice you need to be successful in almost any given field. More importantly it doesn't sugarcoat anything. If this business isn't right for you, you'll know by about 40 pages in. My one complaint, and it is a small one, is that some of the information is a little dated. Specifically the sections on CGI and the internet. As far as the rest of the fields go, the information still applies today. Buy this book. Read it cover to cover. Do what the author says, and you will have a career in Hollywood. I cannot recommend this enough.
Read it and loved it.......2005-12-29
Linda Buzzell gives an excellent account of how to make it in Hollywood. Any person reading this book can learn a lot if they choose to follow their dreams into moviemaking and acting. This book definitely was helpful in getting my last movie, The S.I.N., distributed. And, it will be helpful as I put together my new radio show, The Indie Film Hour, on World Talk Radio. Thanks Linda. www.vdefilms.com
More than just Hollywood.......2005-07-20
This book was required reading for an exploratory class I was taking on Entertainment Technology Careers. It proved to teach me a lot more than just that, it gives you insightful and helpful tips as well as the exercises within the chapters that assist you in finding out what it is that you really want to do and where your motivation comes from. I think it is an invaluable book for not only people seeking work in the entrainment field but for people who aren't really sure which way to go about it or which end they'd like to be in.
Great Advice for Any Market!.......2000-01-30
A great book for anyone in the entertainment industry, not just the film industry; covers in depth topics such as how to network and how to handle rejection, and how many attempts one can expect to make before securing a position in the industry. Also great advice on entertainment resume writing; I'm already looking forward to the next edition!

Goin' Down The Road: A Grateful Dead Traveling Companion

Book Description
Arranged in chronological order, these pieces add up to nothing less than a full-scale history of the greatest tour band in the history of rock. From Tom Wolfe's account of the Dead's first performance as the Grateful Dead (at an Acid Test in 1965), to Ralph Gleason's 1967 interview with the 24-year-old Jerry Garcia, to Mary Eisenhart's obituary of the beloved leader of the band, these selections include not only outstanding writing on the band itself, but also superb pieces on music and pop culture generally. Fans will be fascinated by the poetry, fiction, drawings, and rare and revealing photographs featured in the book, as well as the anthology's many interviews and profiles, interpretations of lyrics, and concert and record reviews. Still, The Grateful Dead was more than a band--it was a cultural phenomenon. For three decades it remained on one unending tour, followed everywhere by a small army of nomadic fans. This phenomenon is both analyzed and celebrated here, in such pieces as Ed McClanahan's groundbreaking article in Playboy in 1972, fan-magazine editor Blair Jackson's 1990 essay on the seriousness of the drug situation at Dead concerts, and Steve Silberman's insightful essays on the music and its fans.

skip it.......2004-12-18
Skip it, go buy a dicks picks, you'll feel better. I found this book in a remainder bin, ignored like a mother who doesnt talk to its baby, and the baby shrivels up and dies. Read this book and asked myself, how's your head? Yet another attempt to nurse the dead's legacy, by recycling lots of familiar stuff. Go to the library, get out the readers guide, and make yer own, you'll have a better time.
yawn.......2003-02-23
another piece of psychophanthic dead-lit, I've read more interesting stuff. i wish someone would publish something thought provoking and intelligent on the dead, i feel ripped off having bought this book (I have to have everything you see). nothing new here, buy only if you have to have everything (like me)
Peace.
Don't Bother.......2002-06-07
I'd already read a lot of this stuff, and the editor's text was annoying and pretentious (check out his website for more laughs...) Well, at least I borrowed it from a friend. Don't get me wrong - I love the Dead!
A masterpiece on the elusive band.......2001-02-27
This book is a nice edition for "a favorite book on the Dead." Prior writings on the band are generally tell-alls by former friends and insiders. However, this is just honest from the seat of the pants good writing by many insightful commentators from the earliest days to the final days. I saw the Dead perform 25 times between 1983-93; and after reading this book I felt that it answered alot of questions. The Dead have always been one of the most difficult bands to capture in words, so you won't be dissapointed in this entertaining and deadon book on the good 'ole Grateful Dead.
A Fine Collection From Far-Flung Sources -Essential.......2000-09-06
This collection brings together some of the best writing about the Dead, and from some previously hard-to-find sources. Included here are fine pieces from noted Dead scholars Blair Jackson, David Gans, and Steve Silberman, but also served up are rare articles that many latter-day Deadheads have likely not had the pleasure of reading. Some are rare like Charlie Haas' wonderful profile of the band (almost worth the price of the book alone) originally published in the now-defucnt "New West" magazine, and Ed McClanahan's equally notable article that appeared in "Playboy" in the early 70's. Others are from masters like Ralph J. Gleason, whose work is wisely included. The editors have done a painstaking job of selecting and presenting the material, most of which was not readily available before. The prestige of the Oxford Universtiy Press is befitting of such an influential, quirky, and uniquely American institution, and editors David Dodd and Diana Spaulding have done them justice.

Book Description
Mysteries of the Moonsea™
Thomas M. Reid Sean K Reynolds
Darrin Drader Wil Upchurch
A Campaign Arc for Characters of Levels 1—18
The Moonsea–a perilous frontier ruled by tyrants and threatened by monsters. Here cities consumed by decadence and war rise and fall like the sun, and conspiracies abound. Great adventure awaits those who oppose evil, for the Moonsea is rife with it.
The Mysteries of the Moonsea accessory contains 37 loosely connected adventures that can be run individually or linked to form the basis of an entire Forgotten Realms® campaign. In addition to the adventures, this book presents maps and descriptions of the major Moonsea cities of Melvaunt, Hillsfar, Mulmaster, and Zhentil Keep, as well as statistics and descriptions for 15 important campaign villains.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent resource for DMs.......2007-01-22
This book is different from most of the other supplements that Wizards of the Coast has released, and I have to say that it was a very refreshing change of pace. The best way to categorize this book would be to say that it's halfway between a regional sourcebook and a campaign module.
Unlike the other regional books, it doesn't contain a random hodgepodge of information about NPCs, locations, Prestige Classes, new spells, and so on. Instead, you don't have new Prestige Classes, feats, and spells at all, which is just as well, since I think there's more than enough of all three. The book also has much narrower scope, focusing on only the four main cities in the Moonsea region and their surrounding areas. Again, this is just as well, since at least half of the material in my other regional books sit unused.
And unlike the other published modules, the adventures presented in Mysteries of the Moonsea are very loosely connected. Most are nicely self-contained, and have just enough encounters for a party to face in a single day. Each adventure presents a few possible hooks to draw the players in, and I found that it was very easy to tailor them to fit the flavor and motivations of the players closely.
Overall, I think that this book strikes the perfect balance between being a generic regional book that puts most of the work on the DM, and a published module that railroads players.
An absolutely awesome sourcebook!.......2007-01-03
As a long time follower of Zhentil Keep, the Zhentarim, and Lord Bane, I'm sure my opinion is -most- biased. But I have to say that this is one of the best sourcebooks I've read to date. As stated below, yes, this is nore a core book. However, that doesn't at all make it useless.
As a player myself, I like to read up on the NPCs and lore of the Realms, and this is an amazing book for that. Covering the entire Moonsea region, this book delves into key aspects of the north, south, east, and west regions of the Moonsea. It provides maps of the cities, though not to large amounts of detail, and offers up new NPCs; in Zhentil Keep, it gives you the Slave Master of the city, an Erinyes working eagerly under Fzoul Chembryl's guidance, and the dottering old Evil head of the mage's society.
All in all? A worthwhile read!
Not a core book........2006-10-29
Please, do not buy this book if you are looking for a core book. Do not make the same mistake I made.
This is a good book if you are looking for an adventure book. But that is it. Do not spect a lot of descriptions, you will get mostly adventures, not very detailed ones but a lot of them.
I just gave one single star to this book because it is totally mislabled.
Very Disapointed.......2006-09-01
I believe many in the people bought this book expecting another regional sourcebook such as shining south, Unaproachable East etc.
Instead its a collection of thinly flushed out adventures. THe book as a adventure source book is fine, the real issue is that most people wanted a Regional Sourcebook on the Moonsea.
I hope they continue making the Regional Sourcebooks, and seperate these adventure collections into a different area.
Docks review.......2006-08-13
This was a good book, however, I recommend dragon's of faerun and the power of Faerun.
