October: The Second Decade collects examples of the innovative critical and theoretical work for which the journal October is known. A journal anthology draws a collective portrait; together, the gathered texts demonstrate the journal's ambitions and strengths. From the outset, October's aim has been to consider a range of cultural practices and to assess their place at a particular historical juncture. That task has now taken on an intensified urgency. The catastrophic state of our urban economies and the attendant social crises, as well as the more general predicaments of a postcolonial era, have had an inescapable impact on the cultural and discursive practices that are October's concern. Hence, October in its second decade has had an intensified concern with the role of cultural production within the public sphere and a sharper focus on the intersections of cultural practices with institutional structures. The topics of inquiry include body politics and psychoanalysis, spectacle and institutional critique, art practice and art history, and postcolonial discourse.

a good collection, but October has sure pulled back from any connection to actual contemporary art (which is a shame).

What a Piece of Work is Man!.......2007-09-07

There is a line in an Eddie Murphy stand up routine from the 80's where he says "It's the fart game son you'll play it one day". I picked up this book because frankly I am a gaseous girl, who grew up playing the fart game in my house. My father used to lock the windows to our station wagon and made us guess what he had for breakfast, my sisters used to hold me down and poot in my face, we all did the pull my finger joke and we had our own names for the act:

The Barking Spider, "just stepped on a frog", Chocolate Zephyr, Rumbling Paducah, A Howdy, Perfwanky, Beefed, cat food pancake.

This book is like a bible for me, a reference book, and the encyclopedia fartanica if you will. It isn't just a book that you might put in someone's Christmas stocking to get a guffaw "oh look uncle bob got a book from Santa on farting, what a gas!"
It's full of literary references, Shakespearean sonnets, historical data, scientific facts, myths and legends, all you ever wanted to know but they never taught you in 5th grade biology! Besides all the learning you will accomplish, it's also just a funny read and that's really what the game is all about.

The potty humor in this book and the laughter it evoked from me annoyed my wife in a most excellent way. My wife was, however, impressed by the allusions and citations from classic literature. It is a great book for the excremeditation chamber.

What can I say?.......2007-01-12

For a holiday gift that I purchased as a gag gift for my father..........this gift turned out to be a pretty big hit! The author presents this distasteful subject in a way that actually makes it culturally/historically interesting. This book has now been passed around my family and the subject matter has been dicussed at length and debated. Even my mom (who dislikes this kind of subject-matter) is in on the discussions. Pretty interesting stuff........

Simply fantastic!

I picked up this book expecting to find exactly what I found: Jam-packed full of details available nowhere else. This book provides a fascinating behind the scenes look into one of the great movies of all time.

Reading the book is almost as if living through the production. Lebo's writing puts you right in the action and gives the reader new insights into what went into making the movie, relationships between those on set, and the creative vision (and struggles) that went into it all.

It is great to have this level of expertise at your finger tips while watching the real thing. I was amazed with all the behind-the-scene knowledge I had of each take and truly consider this an excellent read well worth my time. I highly recommend it.

A joy for "Godfather " fans..........2006-03-31

The Godfather Legacy is a great collection of behind the scene stories, rumors, cast interviews, and unpublished film photos. Everything a real fans of the Godfather trilogys wants.

The books delves very deep with the first Godfather movie. From its initial spark of an idea about a "mafia" film, (The word "mafia" is not allowed to be said anywhere in the film.) to the long, arduous process of finding a director and cast, to the many problems on set, to finally, it's raving success in the mainstream world and at the Academy Awards.

I am amazed how Francis Ford Coppola survived such an ordeal where he was continually threatened to be fired, and yet still turn out the epitome of gangster films. The casting of unfavorable actor Marlon Brando, as the aging Don Corleone, was an inspired choice. The casting of, yet unknown, Al Pacino, as the meek turned hardened crime boss Michael, was a fight from the very beginning, but proved to be the films star find.

Harlan Lebo's book speaks also of the 2nd and 3rd Godfather films, but not at length like he did the first film. That would be my only complaint. I wanted to really feel, and understand the difference between the first film, with the tremendous pressure Coppola felt directing, to the complete freedom he was given at doing the 2nd film, and his controversial choices in Godfather III. Hopefully, he'll come out with a more detailed book one day. Fingers crossed.

Psychological Thriller of all Time.......2004-06-27

Although it might be considered the most accurate, and perhaps the most thriling of anthologies on the Mafia crimestyle in life, the parts not covered well are the attitudes of the Mafia princesses, and spouses of those involved in relationships in the clan. While it need not be this clan, and could be any clan, the effects upon the lives of women subjected to the emotional deprivation of secular groups is substantial, and might be viewed under the parameters of those who live with narcissistic males, of any group, any ethnicity, and at any age. Because we don't tend to view action thrillers like this one as anything but entertainment, the real underlying important questions rarely get discussed, but could be, and might be of great benefit to those who witness the problems.

not a ripoff from the dvd bonus disc.......2004-03-10

The reader from Los Angeles is quite incorrect in saying this book was ripped off from the bonus disc in the Godfather dvd 3 pack. This was released in 1997 whereas the collection was released in 2001. So the author must obviously be psychic right?

That said, the book is wonderful. There's lots of behind the scenes info, beautiful photos and tidbits to notice in the films. It's a great companion with Amazon's suggested The Godfather Movies: A Pictorial History.

This is a chilling suspenseful story of a mild professor who inherits his uncle's Mafia empire with the cliche "it's an offer you can't refuse". It is an interesting portrayal of the hidden tunnels of Las Vegas Fiction, and brushes aside the distortions found in movies, TV and novels.

I got my dad hooked on this first, then I started SuDoku. I bought both of us this book & I just finished it & I NEED more. I have been looking on line to order something like this book but have not found what I am looking for just yet. This is by far, the best book out there. Bring on Volume 4!!!

Pleasingly challenging puzzles.......2006-12-10

This is the best book of harder sudoku that I've seen. The puzzles appear to be hand-created, unlike the randomly created junk found in some other books. In many difficult puzzles, the solver is reduced to penciling in possibles fairly early on, then searching through lots of tiny numbers for clues. In this book that's rarely necessary (and least in Levels 1-4, which is as far as I've gotten.) The book has a nice small format, and the paper is very white and of excellent quality. All in all, highly satisfactory!

Finally...a really challenging Su Doku puzzle book!.......2006-07-11

Level 1 of this book is like level 5 on the Vol 1 book of the same title. I can only solve about half of the level 5s in this book. These puzzles are excellent for those who have mastered the medium and hard level puzzles in most newspapers. But be warned, these are hard compared to vol. 1. I can't wait for the next advanced one. I may even buy a second copy of Vol. 3 since I don't remember the answers anyway!

Good Quality book, with faily easy puzzle........2005-11-02

I bought the Big Book of Sudoku and stopped using it due to the waffer thin papper.

This book as a nice heavy stock.
The margins are to big, the puzzles could be expanded.
Over the puzzles were not that hard (compared to Daily Sudoku's Uk Very Hard one)
Small size makes it easy to carry.

Nice book for starters or travelling.
Not good enough if you've done alot of them.

lots of puzzles.......2005-10-26

There are no instructions in this book. The puzzles are all fairly easy. Mr. Sinden made an error in the introdoction when he called the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler the inventor of Sudoku. Sudoku was invented in the late 1970's.

Puzzles on the simpler side.......2005-10-09

I like the size of this book - fits easily in my purse and the paper quality is good. There's plenty of scribble room in the margins - I use that a lot. However, it says that there are 5 levels of puzzle and even though I'm fairly new to this addiction, I found that levels 1-4 were very simple and even level 5 is only moderately tricky. If you like puzzles that are quick to solve or are finding other publications too hard, this might be a good choice for you, but if you're looking for a challenge, make another choice.

200 SUKODU puzzles!.......2005-10-04

The reason I rated this book 4 Stars is that it has 200 puzzles
of 5 levels of difficulty.;and 40 puzzles of each level.Therefore, a pretty good book for someone looking for more puzzles.
However,there has been no attempt to give hints or methods for solving.That alone makes this not the book to buy for a novice to solve Sukodos.There is a bit of history on the puzzle but very weak and doesn't give the impression that the puzzle was around in the US in the 70's, picked up by a Japanese puzzle book editor and taken back to Japan.It became a very popular alternative to our Crossword puzzles as their language doesn't lend itself to crosswords.
The book is a good size,but the puzzle grid could have been larger as it uses only about 2/3 of the page.
Overall, not my first choice for a novice.For some better choices see my reviews of Aug 3 (2 books),Aug 6,Aug 10,and Sept 30.

Lots of Puzzles, but no instructions.......2005-08-11

This is a great book containing 200+ puzzles. However, there are no instructions or hints on how to work the puzzles. If you are new to Su doku and looking for instructions, this is not the book for you. However, once you get the hang of puzzle solving, this is nice sized book to carry around with you. Good variety of easy, medium and difficult puzzles. The pages hold up to eraser marks.

If you're looking for a book that has a broad spectrum of information that covers the tools and mechanics of the art of creating moving images this book is it. Although the title suggests it is a reference for TV work alone, those who do corporate videos, interviews, and documentaries will find that the production standards set down by Colby Lewis and Tom Greer cover every aspect of filming required. The sections on camera placement, set design, efficiency of a production that they illustrate are the foundation blocks of a good production. There is a host of information here that translates to filming inside a studio or on a location, just as for TV or feature film.

This book is a reference tool that you will find yourself revisiting throughout your career.
