Robert McGinnis is once of the most admired, influential and prolific illustrators working today, best known for his astonishing career as a paperback cover artist. His first covers appeared in 1958, and since then he has painted over one thousand of them, for all the major publishers in all genres. He is most renowned for his portraits of women. The elegant, sexy and intelligent McGinnis Woman is as distinctive and recognizable as was the Gibson Girl in the early 1900's. McGinnis was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1993.
McGinnis's paperback work is avidly sought after by collectors. However, collecting McGinnis covers has been a huge challenge, not only because of the unprecedented volume of his work, but because he was often uncredited, he worked in a wide variety of styles, and many illustrators imitated him. No reliable checklist has been available until now. This book provides a complete and definitive bibliography documenting McGinnis's work as a paperback cover artist. With the artist's cooperation, it has been compiled by two long-time fans and collectors of his work, who began comparing notes and exchanging checklists in 1985.
Over 250 paperback covers are reproduced in this book, along with many examples of the original art, model photos and preliminary sketches which afford an inside-the-studio look at the artist's working methods. The parade of covers-mysteries, westerns, romances, bestsellers-is a capsule graphic survey of trends in American mass market fiction of the last forty years, and of the extraordinary career of a gifted illustrator, Robert McGinnis.

(Not Enough) Paperbacks Covers of Robert mcGinnis.......2001-07-29
Well, right off the bat let me just say that if you are a Robert McGinnis fan, you must have this book. The production standards are terrific and the reproductions of paintings, from the originals, are as crisp and eye-popping as you always hope for in an art book. The book is also a valuable companion volume to "Tapestry" released. last year and covers completey new ground in terms of illustrations reproduced. All this said, I do have a quibble with the thought that went into the layout. Fine coated art paper is used throughout and what did the authors do? They filled up huge portions of this gorgeous paper with a complete checklist of McGinnis paperback covers, rather than the illustrations us fans were looking for. The checklist is a valuable tool for those who wish to compile a complete library of McGinnis paperbacks, (say, 5% of the people who love the work of McGinnis), but it could easily have fit at the back of the book on cheaper stock, which would have left room for dozens (if not hundreds) of color McGinnis covers. Oh well! Still good, but it was "this close" to being great!
A Book of Narrow Focus.......2001-06-05
Robert McGinnis is one of America's most gifted illustrators and the breadth of his talent was well-documented in his art book, TAPESTRY. Pin-ups, Westerns, movie posters--the guy could paint it all. THE PAPERBACK COVERS OF ROBERT MCGINNIS, though featuring several paintings as well as pencil roughs and a couple of photo references, is not an art book, but rather is a rather pricey checklist geared toward paperback collectors. The majority of the color works are small reproductions of the actual covers as they originally appeared--and the focus is firmly on McGinnis' detective covers with the other genre's he's worked in getting barely a nod. Even so, I would have preferred to see large reproductions of the artist's trademark femme fatales unmarred by titles instead of the plethora of tiny second-generation reproductions found in this volume: the format and content is geared SO much toward the hardcore collector mentality that the editors/authors seemed to have lost track of the ART and the ARTIST they supposedly revere. A disappointment.

The best selling author of I'm With the Band, the classic groupie memoir, now writes from the relatively upright perspective of a magazine journalist. Pamela Des Barres recounts the classic tales of rock star overindulgence, and the book's own press material honestly bills it as a compendium of "horror stories." Rock Bottom contains something to offend just about anyone, but, strange to say, the book is actually quite readable as an appropriately skewed history of rock. Des Barres seems to have diligently done her research, talking to the principles of the mayhem, or, in many cases, to their survivors, and does deliver a series of pieces documenting some very dark corners of pop culture.

Pamela Des Barres is apparently torn between writing a "respectable" rock book, and another collection of groupie memories. Because "Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon" is merely another tepid recounting of rock'n'roll's worst moments, and it isn't elevated by Des Barres' own recollections.
The theme is addiction, jail time and death -- most world-famous rockers have encountered at least one of the above. Des Barres explores the lives (and often deaths) of famed rockers like the doomed Jim Morrison, Queen's Freddie Mercury, the cruel Rick James, wild man John Bonham, equally wild Keith Moon, and many others. Her tales stretch from the early days of rock'n'roll to the early 1990s, but few things actually change.
Sadly, Des Barres doesn't add anything to the telling of rock'n'roll's tale. Her recountings are mostly compressed biographies, with no new revelations or insights. Okay, we know Morrison could be a boor. We know Sid Vicious descended into heroin addiction. Yada yada -- it reads like a collection of magazine tributes.
She also tries to inject herself into the book, which only unbalances it. It's a bit weird to hear distant third-person accounts, then hear detailed "I" accounts. Her accounts aren't terribly interesting either -- somehow hearing about her peeping-tammy antics, watching Brian Jones with two girls, is creepy rather than enlightening.
Des Barres' writing does not make up for the lack of new information. At best, it's ordinary. At worst, it includes lines like "I could feel my own swelling love-pump pressing against my rib cage." Too many chapters are filled with unwarranted hero-worship, no matter how deteriorated, depraved or deranged the stars were. Apparently it's in line with Des Barres' idea that a REAL rock star must be arrested, addicted and cause headlines with weird antics.
A lack of new info and a tepid writing style bog down "Rock Bottom: Dark Moments In Music Babylon," a failed attempt at a serious rock'n'roll book. Definitely to be missed.

I enjoyed her other 2 Books so this one was next on the List!
A great collection of different Rockstar's & Group's tales and escapades in the Great world of Sex, Drugs, & Rock'n'Roll. Pamela writes in a very Friendly insider's style that is neither preachy nor snobbish. She has Plenty of Firsthand experiences, but it doesn't hinder the scope. I Do Not like Led Zeppelin's Music but that chapter had my Mouth Open, Chin on the Floor! WOW!
I also liked the Johnny Thunders' one a whole lot, It was handled as the tragic Mystery that it is.
Have some Fun, Stay in school, and [pop] open the books!

I really enjoyed this well written book. Even though I'm not a fan of half the rockers Pamela wrote about, the book drew me in. The chapter on Chuck Berry was the best. This is definitely the sort of stuff Chuck left out in his own autobiography! The stuff on Gram Parsons brought tears to my eyes. I'm looking forward to any future books by Miss Des Barres, but for now I'll have to be content reading her column for E! entertainment online.

A huge chunk of history of the 1960s would have been lost if Pamela des Barres hadn't written about her exploits in her two previous books. "Rock Bottom : Dark Moments in Music Babylon" isn't a sequel to her autobiographies, however; it's a series of mini-biographies of some of our dearly departed musicians. Pamela manages to bring a personal aspect to the interviews -- while maintaining her true image as a friendly face and not a hanger-on. The book is well-written and witty at times, even though the deaths are heartbreaking. It's incredibly apropos that I received the book as a gift from a dear friend who owns a record store! My only slightly negative comment is that Pamela des Barres has never written about the Grateful Dead in her books. Her love of music isn't confined to any one genre, and she was in the same area of the country at the same time... I believe that Jerry's death was well before publication of this book. I'm looking forward to another history by Pamela des Barres. She brings history to life, and makes it more fun than any of my high school teachers ever did (no offense!) even when the stories are sad. Very Cool Guide.......2006-06-14
This reads like a graphic novel. It really is a great information filled guide if you take the time to read it. Playing games are not instant, and neither is this guide, but I really like the format. It makes it more than a guide, but also entertainment on it's own.
Disappointing.......2004-10-30
This game just rocks. It is so much fun and so detailed that you would probably think that the guide is too. You would be wrong. This guide lacks almost any real useful information and is confusing. While it is clever to do it in a comic book fashion, the important info is either hard to find or non existant. Many times, info that I needed to know was not included and the clue bottle map is non demetional and hard to determine where the bottles are. I have actually had to get that info else where. In fact, if you need assisntance with the game, I STRONGLY suggest you travel over to gamefaqs.com and look it up there. Much better advice and its free. Don't waste ur money with this guide, I am sorry I wasted mine.
