Of Course Pre-Raphaelite Cats.......2006-01-29

This was a nice edition, and I knew it would make a nice addition to my friend's "cat library." The artist and subject were pre-sold from earlier publications, such as Shakespeare Cats, and this particular production did not let me down -- I knew when I saw it she'd be delighted with her late Christmas present. I hope there are more like it and that Amazon has them available, and ships them as quickly and in such good condition as this one.

Very light verse .......2007-05-24

This small book of verses contains Judith Viorst's reflections on herself and her world as she turns fifty. The book is advertised as 'poetry' but if poetry we mean "the deepest expression of feeling in words" this is not poetry at all.
These are mild thoughts grouped into little stanzas centering usually on a single theme. One most interesting one centers on ' what happened to the children' and simply states the very varied and idiosyncratic career and love choices made by what I suspect are not only her children but those of her friends and neighbors. Another , the opening poem focuses on the whole business of being asked how old one is, and the hidden intentions behind the question. Another poem is about the ' second marriage' and the calculations and considerations involved in it of a friend. The final poem which truly epitomizes the spirit of the whole book is called " The Pleasures of Ordinary Life" and focuses on the consolations of good health , and small pleasures when one reaches an age when the big violent passionate dramas of life are no longer there.
These verses are often light and can be mildly amusing. They are not profound, deep and moving as the best poetry ordinarily is.

Judith Viorst has become the poet of aging with books of poetry dedicated to her lyrical and funny perceptions of each decade of life from the 20s to the 60s. With Forever Fifty And Other Negotiations she explores with insight and humor the joys and fears of being in your fifties. The book contains 24 one-page poems that are accompanied by full page graphic illustrations in green ink on a rich cream paper. The 24 graphics are reproduced on the end papers. The attention to design makes this a wonderful gift for a quinquagenarian friend.

The poems are funny and sentimental yet bittersweet. In some poems we see a person who is struggling to accept the limitations of middle age (where running wild is to go for a walk without sunscreen and memory can't be relied upon). In others she seeks the joys that come with the wisdom of years as when she says "We're quicker to laugh, and not so eager to blame." In yet others, she makes affirmations to live life "as a sexy old lady" and lists the things she'd like to do before she goes.
There are poems that take humorous looks at adult children, long-term marriage partners, and young doctors.

Overall, a wonderful but light look at the aging process of the 50s. It is a book you will enjoy, but one that will not burn into your soul.

Gentle Poetic Humor of Nostalgia and Reassurance.......2000-07-15

This is the fourth of Judith Viorst's books of poetry about crossing decades in one's life. Perhaps this one will become one of her most popular in the next 10 years as record numbers of baby boomers turn 50 every day. Although both women and men will find plenty that speaks to them, the book is very much in a woman's voice and will resonate more powerfully with many female readers.

Each poem deserves its own comment, but I would exceed my word quota if I did that.

Let me see if I can group them a bit for you. Some of the poems focus on how things have changed with age. "Wild Thing" is a good example, which lists a lot of things the author does when she's feeling wild -- like "I didn't bother flossing before bedtime." "Second Marriage" is the tale of a widow and widower whose family situations keep them from following their hearts. "To a Middle-Aged Friend Considering Adultery" advises the woman in question to give up the idea of a young male lover. It won't last and it's not worth it.

She also finds plenty to be pleased about in being 50. In "Exercising Options," she skips all of the strenuous exercises in favor of floating on her back in a pool. In "Happiness," many simple blessings like good health turn out to be the most enduring sources of happiness.

Children are never far out of the picture. The brief joy of the empty nest quickly evaporates as they all return to stay (some with spouse or children in tow) in "They're Back." "How Can People Want to Bring Children into This Terrible World" is a poetic discussion with a daughter-in-law about the author's desire to have a grandchild. There's always an edge of unsettled concern in these. For example, in "You Say You Want to Know How the Children Are Doing" is a litany of superficial updates on great numbers of children ending in the lament, "But what does it mean?" She has advice for her son in how to answer his wife's question about does he love her in "Some Advice from a Mother to Her Married Son."

Other poems are filled with hope and are forward looking. In "Before I Go," she tells how she'd "like to make things better." She aspires to be a "Sexy Old Lady" in the poem by that name at 80 with "my sexy old husband nestled beside me in bed."

The book's tone is perhaps best captured by "Pleasures of an Ordinary Life" in which she praises having "a long history and connections" with other people.

Judith Viorst is as gentle a guide as you can find into the land of the 50s. You'll enjoy your birthday and the decade more if you read and draw upon her wit and wisdom. It'll help you overcome your misconception stalls about what's next.

This IS a fun read, and addresses all the aspects of flings and frolics and forever afters in a manner that helped me determine what is right for me. Definitely a romantic look at all the possibilities, it helped me think about aspects of dating I may not have considered. This one gave me the courage to get out there because it also gave me a sense of my own boundaries and how to honor myself.

This is a fun book, written by two very enthusiastic, positive women. I found it very enjoyable to read and got a kick out of it. This is a terrific book for women who are looking for a romantic partner/marriage or those who just need to get out of a tiresome routine. This book has lots of good suggestions on how to leave the doldrums/stagnation and get into the social swim. It is encouraging and very optimistic. The book offers good guidelines on how to zero in on a man who is suitable and harmonious while respecting and honoring your own needs and wants. The writing exercise on Action Goals and Life Pattern Goals is very valuable, regardless of where you are in life!

Something's Gotta Give?.......2006-08-05

I was disappointed in this book for all the reasons mentioned by Ms. Janis. All of her comments ring true, everyday. I too remember articles about losing at tennis or "50 ways to make him happy" published in magazines of my youth. I also remember being told that if I wanted to find a man, I had to be less-smart and ditch my glasses. Well here I am, new to the 50 Club, still wearing glasses and smarter than ever! If my only chance for finding romance with a man who may have ED, looks as bad as Jack Nicholson did in "Something's Gotta Give" and is hooked on Viagra - I'll stay home and watch old movies on TCM. In short, why should I sacrifice who I am and bother with the face-lifts, new teeth and other false-hoods that society still fosters when all men over 50 want is a younger woman who will boost their image and ego. Amen!

A "fun read" yes, but -----.......2006-03-05

This book is basically aimed at people who are prepared to turn themselves into lobotomized geriatric Barbies. One reviewer comments here that she doesn't approve of them telling women to fake an orgasm --- what I find even worse is advising women to get facial surgery! (Hey, don't forget that American culture dictates that you only have yourself to blame if you no longer appear to be 35.)

The basic premise is that, because of the reduced number of men available for us menopausal mavericks, we have to enter into stiff competition with the other ladies in order to be fitter, better dressed, whiter-toothed, and overally boucier and happier than our competition (heaven forbid that a potential partner might see the real person). This reminds me of advice I read in a teenage magazine some 40 years ago: "A *really* clever girl knows how to lose *convincingly* at tennis". My attitude is now what it was then --- if that's what it takes, count me out.

Also, most of the advice is for people without "real lives". If you are engaged in an actual active, engaging career (you know, one where you might be unable to just up and move to some other place in the US because the dating prospects might improve), you don't have time for all this gym hopping, manicure parlour visiting, volunteering, joining sports clubs etc. Hey --- Georgia O'Keefe didn't have to put up with this nonsense.

Oh, and yes, I *am* "over 13" (even in dog years).

Romance Coach Gives 5 Stars.......2006-02-26

Yippee! Not too often am I able to write a good review about a
dating books for older women. In fact, I can't remember the
last one that I liked. But finally, a good one!

"Flings, Frolics, and Forever Afters: A Single Woman's Guide to
Romance After Fifty" by Katherine E. Chaddock and Emilie
Chaddock Egan is a winner.

Here's what I liked about it: This book was clearly written by
two women over fifty who have been there and done that. They
know what they are talking about and know how to write -- yea!
Chaddock and Egan do not talk down to their reader and do not
infantalize us with cutsey cartoons or think we won't see
through shallow information. This book is PACKED with
information. Granted, once in awhile, the authors do slip into
some not-so-adorable labels like "The Pin Cushion" and "The
Violin Player," but hey, none of us are perfect.

There's too much good in this book for me to pick out
illistrations. But I did particularly like what they called "the
nightie slide" (pg. 174) for finessing the "getting naked" part.

I did NOT like "The Magnolia Principle - the full court girly
push." Could be because it came from a woman who lived in
Oxford, Mississippi. I'm in Florida now, but Mississippi is too
recent in my memory to be able to romantisize Southern Belles.

So, I liked "Flings, Frolics, and Forever Afters" and recommend
it to any single woman over 50 who is stepping into the dating
fray. It'll help, believe me!

This book is excellent because it is filled with loads of information and it is very concise too. What makes it such a good read is that it has so much information, yet quick-paced and very organized. Nothing is left out, cameras, shots, framing, scriptwriting, makeup, casting, etc. Intuitively divided: pre-production, shooting and post-production.

It explains the movie making process from A-Z without bogging you down with every single detail. For each section respectively, the author gives you a good overview and then important details and examples of what you need to know. It's a great way to cover so much in a 140 pg. book. Although it's an easy read, you will learn a lot.

Concise book with great Illustrations.......2005-12-07

This book can be finished in one day, and it has all the info you need to get started. Great thing is that it packs a lot of stuff into 140 pages, including great photos to guide you throughout.

Why waste money on film school? Pick up books like these, read them thoroughly and go apply yourself out in the real world. All the essentials are in this book - highly recommended.

Some of the best world music ever collected.......1997-08-12

A fantastic collection of music from the rollicking to the spiritual. The performers come from everywhere-- China, Northern Europe, Cajun country, India, Texas, Africa and of course Argentina. My particular favorites were unheralded jazz genius Alice Hall-- she can *swing* like no one's business-- to the deeply meditative Pauline Olivieros to the master himself, Astor Piazzolla. If you love accordions, get it. If you're indifferent to accordions, get it. If you think accordions are a satanic plot, then you definitely must get it. This music will change your world. Includes a great book explaining the styles and presenting the musicians.

Double crostic books are hard to find but Amazon got one to me lickety- split and followed up with an e-mail detailing the other crostic books they had found. "Used" meant "on the shelf a while" but puzzles had not been worked.

This book has been used broadly in American Universities from the first Edition. This book provides a lot of infomarion about history, procedure, and broadcating technology itself in the United States. Currently, the area of broadcasting has been broaden into Internet. Web-casting is one of new types of broadcasting internationally. This 4th edition includes this new shapes of broadcasting on the Web. I hope this edition gives more insights of American broadcasting systems.
