Book Description

Larger than life, Disney has become synonymous with brilliant animation and magnificent theme parks. But what about the man himself? In this collection of remembrances, more than one hundred people recall the ways their lives were touched by this complex, remarkable man: animators who trained under him; directors inspired by his vision; actors who sought him out for advice and support; and family members who knew him best of all. There are many revealing insights about a man whose energy and imagination sparked a million ideas.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The finest tribute to a great man.......2003-11-18

I was very happy while reading this book. I found all the things Walt's aquaintances had to say about him very interesting and credible. Very little seemed sugar coated (as Disney personel seem to be sometimes). I would make the assumption that Walt's personality was portrayed correctly by the many people that knew him. Throughout the course of reading this book I kept thinking about the quote that one amazon reviewer said that made me buy this book in the first place, "makes me wish I knew that man."

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful insight into the philosophy of Walt Disney.......2003-10-26

This book is exactly as one would expect by reading the title. It's just quote after quote from people who knew Walt Disney best. I liked that many of his former employees were interviewed. Since I was familiar with some of the animators, imagineers, and actors it made it a more personal thing for me when reading this book. There are also many pictures that show Walt during all the different periods of his life, though the majority of them are during his successful years heading the Disney corporation. I share the sympathy of another reviewer who said that after reading this book they wished they had known Walt Disney. I think a person who really admires the Disney empire will share the same sentiments about the man who dared to dream.

5 out of 5 stars The "real" Walt Disney.......2003-03-17

The heart of Walt Disney is perfectly captured in this landmark remembrance. Represented through vintage studio and family photographs, combined with personal, first-hand memories from those who knew and worked with Walt, this book is the perfect cornerstone to any Walt Disney library.

Take your time. You'll want to enjoy this book forever.

4 out of 5 stars A GOOFY VALENTINE TO THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING.......2003-02-10

This lavishly illustrated tribute --- first published in 1999 and now released as an oversized trade paperback --- is a must for diehard Disneyites. (Dig the vintage, time-worn color
cover photo of Uncle Walt, with Cousin Oscar clearly in view.) Amy Boothe Green and Howard Green's text is nothing more than quote after quote from Walt's pals, peers, co-stars, family and friends, all of whom (surprise!) praise The Man Who Would Be King. But it's the vast array of black-and-white and color photographs --- many rare and many never-before-seen, all of which are stuffed into the pages --- that make this a winner. Walt as a young boy. Walt as a young man. Walt at play. Walt at work. Walt with family. Walt with friends. Walt with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Walt with Hayley Mills. Walt with Shirley Temple. Walt with Annette Funicello, who provides the book's most poignant quote: "When I was first diagnosed with multiple sclerosis ... I thought,. "If Mr. Disney were here, I could ask him what I should do. He would know." And, of course, Walt with the Mouse and the Mouseketeers. Noting goofy here. Except Goofy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2002-09-30

This is definately a winner! Great little gems from Walt Disney's family, closest friends and colleagues. The pictures are equally wonderful. Great candid shots and personal family photos. This man had more character than Mickey Mouse himself!

            Book Description

This timely study analyzes the 17th century revival of monasticism by English women who founded convents in France and the Low Countries. Examining the nuns' membership of both the English Catholic community and the continental Catholic Church, it argues that despite strict monastic enclosure and exile, they nevertheless engaged actively in the spiritual and political controversies of their day. The book will add much to our understanding of women's power in early modern Europe, and offer an insight into a previously ignored section of English society.

No sight is more evocative than a small village where an embattled tower stands proudly or a great sweep of landscape from which an elegant spire soars above trees and meadows. Celebrate the English church in all its diversity--the different architecture, regional styles, structural materials, personalities, and settings. Each example combines familiarity with the pleasure of discovery.

5 out of 5 stars My Favourite Book - Ever.......2000-05-05

This is one of my favourite books of all time - I even own two copies as the first got damaged by constant use by me, my family AND my friends. It is a must for anyone who finds the aesthetically pleasing beautiful to behold. Page after page of sumptuous photography, quite excellently executed camerawork which brings to life the glorious buildings and their histories, accompanied by short snippets of tantalising information. Thanks to this book I've visited over half of the one hundred or so churches, many down obscure country lanes forgotten about by the busy world rushing by. No matter what one's religious views the sheer splendour of these buildings is heavenly.

So ... I buy this book , because I am 22 , and finishing college and I see it on line . Mistake , mistake , mistake , a waste of $9 , I should just have borrowed it from the library . He repeats himself , and all it is is cute quips about getting laid and working . It's something that is not a breath of fresh air , but a breath of stale air . It's not informative , its mostly a book about drunken gatherings . I personally found it bery boring and I am wondering if I can return it ... or regift it , but that might seem tacky .

5 out of 5 stars Suuch a great book :).......2007-06-27

BY FAR, one of the funniest books I have ever read. It is clever, witty and gives every twenty-something out there a sigh of relief that you're not the only one out there thinking what Karo is writing. The little jokes and thoughts about life after college are soo fun to read. My favorite parts include the one when he talks about how you haven't lived until youve drunkenly left your cell in a cab on a sat. night. which leads to then calling it a zillion times, paying the cabbie way too much for bringing it back to you, only to hear 3,000 drunk, pathetic voicemails from yourself - haha... It's like I know exactly what he means, but he can just word it sooo much better and soo much funnier -
i loved it and cant wait for the next book from him :)

5 out of 5 stars Spot-On Hilarious account of 20s life in NYC.......2007-01-09

Having lived in NYC for several years after graduating college, literally every single thing Karo talked about in this totally on-point book had happened to me. I felt like I was reading the clever, hilarious version of my life, except from the perspective of a female. Actually, is it weird that a lot of my stories were exactly the same, even though I am a girl???
Great gift for friends who did the same song and dance (that you wouldn't change a minute of) as you.

This book is one of these easy reads...quick page turners....will have u laughing out loud..as it did me....Aaron Karo def. hit the nail on the head in his tellings of what typical life is like in your twenties. Loved the book, a "gourmet" reading....I reccomend it to all!

                            5 out of 5 stars I agree!!! .......2005-12-03

I agree with the review below, this is one of the funniest columns for twenty-somethings I have ever seen!!! For the most part its right off his column, but I can read it again, its that good. I think it takes a true twenty-something to really enjoy this book because most of the written humor out there is not geared to this audience.
                            Well done Karo!!!

                              Book Description

Abbas Kiraostami planted Iran firmly on the map of world cinema when he won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival in 1997 for his film A Taste of Cherry. Here the growing reputation of Iranian cinema from its origins in the films of Kimiai and Mehrjui, through the work of established directors such as Kiraostami, Beyzai and Bani-Etemad, to young film-makers like Samira Makhmalbaf and Bahman Qobadi, who triumphed at the Cannes 2000 festival, is examined. Dabashi employs interviews with directors, insightful commentary on individual films, an extensive filmography, and generous illustration to provide an indispensable guide to a little-studied cinematic genre. Unabashedly polemical, he dissects the idea of the oriental in western perceptions of Iranian cinema and details the way that film festivals and distribution in the west have shaped domestic output in Iran. He looks, too, at the particular difficulties faced by women film-makers in a country of Islamic orthodoxy, and the obstacles placed in the path of directors attempting to introduce dissident politics in their work. 30 b/w photos.

5 out of 5 stars A Touching Reminder Of A Day That United All Of America...........2002-07-08

Where were YOU on the morning of September 11th, 2001? I was at work when Howard Stern reported that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers. Having been born and raised in The Bronx before moving to Rochester, N.Y., my workday immediately ended as I focused my full attention on Howard's show; He became my only link to the city I loved and would always call home. Later on came the TV reports and the images that will never leave my mind, but for those first few hours, I sat listening in shock as the man who makes me laugh every workday became my only connection to family, friends, and loved ones who were suddenly living in a war-zone.

9-11: Emergency Relief is a benefit book that is filled with true stories from September 11th. They range from touching, to infuriating, to thought-provoking, and the list of creators reads like a who's who of Indy Comics: James Kochalka, Will Eisner, Tony Millionaire, Harvey Pekar, Tom Hart, Joyce Brabner, Ted Rall, and literally DOZENS of others. Besides being entertaining, and raising money for the Red Cross, the book fulfills another important purpose: It stands as a reminder of a day we must NEVER forget. God Bless America!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, dense and horrifying.......2002-02-16

Easily the best of the comics industry's myriad responses to the tragedy of September 11th, this book gets down into the nitty-gritty of human experiences and reactions to tragedy. No superheroes. No larger-than-life expostulation. Just real people - talented artists - telling amazing stories. Higlights include Gregory Benton's "Treasure," an untitled Hutch Owen story by Tom Hart that manages to toe the fine line between rage and sentiment and "Citadel Of The Night" by K. Thor Jensen and Chris Knowle. Honestly, though, the book is so full of great material that nobody should be without it.

5 out of 5 stars Every community library in the country should acquire a copy.......2002-02-05

After the September 11th terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania, some 50 graphic novelists and cartoonist ranging from such legendary names as Will Eisner and Harvey Pekar, to newer talents such as Frank Cho and James Kochalka, came together in a very special project as a way of expressing their grief, patriotism, and support of the American people in the face of naked, lethal, ideologically driven aggression. The result is 9-11: Emergency Relief, a powerful graphic novel. The proceeds will go to benefit the American Red Cross. Simply put, every school and every community library in the country should acquire a copy of 9-11: Emergency Relief for the edification of their students and their patrons.

5 out of 5 stars Universal Emotions in Black and White.......2002-01-31

9-11: Emergency Relief puts a unique perspective on a shared tragedy. Taking the events out of the cold realism of news photography and video and into the pen and ink world of the comix artist lets the reader share the emotions of another individual on a highly personalized level.

Do not let the genre keep you from reading this book! Even if you are not a comix afficionado, the images and storytelling technique of each artist/author are fascinating and deeply moving.

Like any good book, it is well structured. Stories lead up to the event, there are on-site accounts, the aftermath, and the realization that we're living in a changed world. For people having trouble coming to terms with the events of 9-11 -- regardless of their age -- this book provides comfort and insight. We all have stories to tell about 9-11 and most readers have probably wished they could express their own feelings so well. Fortuntely, this group of artists says it for us.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Terrific book!.......2002-01-24

Everyone has a dark side--it's that frightening part of our personalities that drives
you to root for something to blow up and hurt James Bond. It's what makes us "root
for the bad guy" at Mel Gibson films. It's what drove us to watch with rapt attention
on September 11, as the Civilized World crumbled before our eyes.

This, happily, is not the part of us that forces us onward through "9-11," a graphic
novel that tells nearly fifty stories by respected creators from the comic-book industry
about the terrorist attacks and their implications. "9-11" is, with rare exception
like Ashley Wood's obscenity-laden two page monologue, a labor of profound love.

Here, comics legend Will Eisner--who literally invented the concept of "sequential
art," the name by which the academic community now refers to comics--joins virtually
ever major creator in the comics industry in donating his time, money, energy and
artwork to charities benefiting the victims of the September 11 terror attacks.

Marvel Comics lead the pack, their magazine-format "Heroes" book being the first
released (in late October) and best-promoted of all benefit books. The first week
in January, they followed up with "Moment of Silence," another comics-for-charity
project to which Hollywood director and comics guru Kevin Smith contributed a story.
"9-11" was released on January 9 by Alternative Comics, a small, independent publisher.
It contains mostly works done by small-press of self-published comics creators who

Especially notable in the "9-11" tribute book are several pieces by non-legends,
who have been largely overlooked even in the comics press due to names like Harvey
Pekar, Will Eisner and Tony Millionaire being attached to the project. A. David Lewis'
11-page "Alabaster Cities" details his exploits on the morning of September 11, which
are refreshingly non-dynamic. Rather than depicting himself running out the door
to help, as is the temptation when writing a story about your personal reaction to
great tragedy, Lewis and many other creators in the book simply paint a picture of
desperate phone calls, frantic e-mails and great personal reflection and fear. Despite
a medical condition that precludes him from Armed Services duty, Lewis confesses
to ever-so-briefly worrying about being drafted on September 11--a thought that surely
crossed the mind of every young male in the country in the hours following the attacks
                                  on America.

John "Bean" Hastings has a short but poignant story about the importance of art and
popular culture in troubled times--it's clear that he put a lot of himself in a small
amount of pages, and the result is stellar. Keith Knight's indictment of middle America's
closedminded attacks against Arab-Americans and Danny Donovan's disappointment that
the heroes of comic books and movies weren't there to save us when it was truly needed,
hit home in witty and well-thought-out stories designed to make readers take a break
from the seemingly endless pages of grieving and think about their own attitudes.

All in all, "9-11" is a beautiful book, put together by truly talented people and
well-executed; it can do no person harm to buy a copy. Or two--the money, after all,
                                  is going to charity.

                                  Book Description

An orphan's story of tough love, comic relief, and reaching for the American dream

The Louisville and Jefferson County Children's Home provided a difficult and austere beginning for James W. Settle, D.D.S. However, he also received an excellent education at the Children's Home and went on to live a full, rich life filled with community service. THE BEANERY is a fascinating, inspiring, and humorous chronicle of his life that includes, among many other things, his experiences in the Navy before WWII and his lifelong love of music. Now retired, at age 90, Dr. Settle still performs regularly with the Watsonville Marching and Concert Band. The American Dream, with all of its rewards, has become a reality for James W. Settle.

5 out of 5 stars The Beanery Review.......2003-10-17

What a great book! I compare the times back in the 20's and 30's to now and find it interesting that an orphan could have such a great chance to be the best he could be and with such excellence expected of him. Yet today it is hard for me, a single mom, to get my own children to be so energetic about learning. Is it that there are so many distractions? Maybe it is the fact that he had the space to dream and the teachers and, in most cases, mentors able to take the time to sustain such a "village". Yet we all have the chance and choice to make something of ourselves and to be the mentors to others. Who knows what others will say of this generation in 80 years?
The book is very well written and thoroughly researched for someone who is 87-90 years old. What a treasure for his descendants! Makes me proud to be his daughter.
P.S.: My dad completed a book signing on November 1 and a Pacific Brass Band concert November 2. He contracted pneumonia and died November 11, Veterans Day, 2003. He smiled when he lifted the book knowing we could enjoy his memories forever. He sincerely wishes all of you would write your own memoirs. It is a true family endeavor. Blessings.

No one will be fooled by this little piece of ephemera. This is not anything like a new Bridget Jones book. It's a revisiting of old jokes, old characters, old stories. That said, there's something curiously addictive about Helen Fielding's creation, and this bonbon should satisfy a Jones jones until the (inevitable) next full-length novel comes along. The Guide to Life is a brief (64 pages) how-to manual from the notoriously inept singleton. To wit: In her chapter on homemaking (titled "The Fragrant Home"), Bridget gives her reader advice on the atmospheric charm of a cozy fire. "The key words here are 'in the grate.'" As to food, she largely confines herself to finding a piece of old cheese in the fridge and cutting off the moldy bits. She does, however, get in one really useful suggestion when she explains how to play the parlor game Shag, Marry or Push off a Cliff. The rules? "Each of the players suggests three names.... The person on the player's right must then decide, if they absolutely had to shag one of them, marry another, and push another off a cliff, which it would be. It is usually best to pick three which are similar in some way." Examples: Russell Crowe, Mr. Darcy, Hugh Grant. Or, Muammar al-Qaddafi, Ayatollah Khomeini, Idi Amin. The author then adds a caveat of typically Jonesian sensitivity: "It doesn't matter if any of them are dead as it is only a game." For those who cry foul at Helen Fielding's cashing in on her phenomenal franchise, it should be noted that some of the proceeds from the book will go to Comic Relief. That's the very organization, incidentally, that the author sends up in her non-Jones novel Cause Celeb--a smart, highly entertaining book that also makes a decent stopgap for Bridgetphiliacs. --Claire Dederer

Don't be fooled! This is not a sequel to The Edge of Reason. It's just a self help book but since this is Bridget Jones it's hardly serious. I liked this book. It was very amusing for the 10 minutes it took to read through it. Unfortunately, a lot of the book just rehashes what happened in the other two books. There is some new material however. I especially enjoyed the instructional photographs. My favorite part of the book is the section on the game "Shag, marry or push off a cliff," which I've become addicted to playing. This book is a must read for Bridget Jones fans but it's not really worth buying.

DO NOT BE FOOLED. Those of Bridget fans waiting for the next installment. . . this isn't it, nor is it a springboard for what is to come. It won't tide you over to the next book. It is silly. A waste of paper and effort (v.b). Honestly. Love Bridget. Love Helen. D.N. love this book.

Being former Singleton & big fan of Bridget Jones' Diary (book & movie...oooh, Mr. Darcy!), I bought this "Guide to Life" hoping for another gem. Humph. The best section is entitled "The Art of Conversation" & it covers about 2 pages. Is mostly gobble-de-gook & lame B&W pictures of getting mold off cheese & how to order pizza. (what Singleton doesn't already have these down pat?)
Good thing about book: Hurrah, is only 55 pages & will be over soon!

4 out of 5 stars The Mother of All Comedy Books.......2002-02-11

On the back book cover of this book it bills itself as The Mother of All Comedy Books...and it is.

Comic Relief is a quick-read, laugh-out loud collection of some of the very best comedy routines that appeared on the Comic Relief HBO specials from 1986-1995. Among the many (not all are listed in this review) comedians' work contained here are: Louie Anderson, Richard Belzer, Elayne Boosler, Billy Crystal, Whoppi Goldberg, Richard Jeni, Richard Lewis, Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, Paula Poundstone, Gary Shandler, Bob Saget -- you get the idea.

A question does arise: if you READ a comedian's routine (his or her "set") is it still funny? The unequivocal answer is: it depends.

I loved this book. I laughed at loud when I read this book. But it's interesting how some comedians you like a LOT are not as funny when you read what they are actually saying. The reason: their personna (their body language, their speech pattern) has a lot to do with the laughs they elicit. On the other hand, there are others who you may not have appreciated whose material is an absolute howl when you read it on the page.
It's easy to see which comedians have achieved success partly due to their personna and which other ones seem to have risen to the top largely due to sharp writing and editing that's funny even when you read it without seeing the delivery.

So this book is worth OWNING for several reasons:
--If you love comedy, there's some great stuff in it. You can put this book down, then go back after a year and read it again and it's still funny.
--If you are a student of comedy, it shows you some great comedy scripts. You'll be amazed at how you'll react at some of these bits if you don't SEE the comedians...and how amazed you'll be at how well written some of these monologues are. If you're doing comedy writing or performing it has some excellent routines that you can analyze to see what makes audiences laugh.

Standouts as far as being funny in script form include routines by Louie Anderson (the most anecdotal of all comedians), Gary Shandling, Richard Belzer, Richard Jeni (truly hilarious), Elayne Boosler, Rita Rudner, Stephen Wright (the best modern comedian to read in printed form), Bob "Bobcat" Goldthwait (whose mantra is "Scott Baio is the antichrist...") and Richard Lewis (who seamlessly blends strong personna and extremely strong comedy script).
This book also has short sections on homelessness and is a pitch for getting more money for "the cause."

Overall, a fun book to read, to own, to study (if you're into comedy and/or a comedian) and to re-read.

                                          4 out of 5 stars Comic Relief.......2000-05-10

Comic Relief was excellent. It was probably the fastest I have ever finished a book. It had all the stand-up comedians from comic relief years past and they kept me laughing non stop. If you like to laugh then you'll love to read this book.
