Rug Abuse.......2005-11-14
This book is a ruggy good read, more intoxicating than Class A rugs. I recommend reading it rugularly whilst listening to "Rugged Out on Death Row" or suitable Ruggae/Rugga classic. While I'm dishing out advice here is another tasty rugget of information that goes right for the rugular. Don't stick metal objects into rug sockets or you will experience rugor mortis. This book is finer than the collected works exhibited in the Ruggenheim Museum in it's artistic merit. Sit down with a rug of tea perhaps on a rugboat and enjoy it, or even take a bar stool in your local Rug and Lettuce with a rug of frothing ale. If you encounter a buxom young wench with a nice set of rugs, offer to walk her home so she doesn't get rugged. But all this is rendered rugatory when considering the actual subject matter of this book, namely, carpets. Read this book, you'd be a rug not to. If you don't, well, you've rug your own grave.

MORE THAN JUST ABOUT RUGS . . ........2002-12-25
What I mean is, the book is full of vignettes that illustrate basic points about shopping -- AND EVEN ABOUT NEGOTIATING !! -- things that are obvious once you think about them, but which you might never have realized. My favorite example: Suppose you see a rug with a price tag of a certain amount, and you say to the salesperson, "The most I'd pay is [such-and such]" -- well, what you've really just said, without knowing it, is that the amount you said is THE LEAST you're going to pay, not "the most," because you've shown that you're willing to pay it and that you can. It's a useful kind of thing to be aware of for any deal you might ever be involved in, whether as buyer or seller. I'm sure you could get things like this from Donald Trump's books, but it's interesting that they're here too.
The book gives an EXCELLENT overview of oriental rugs. The writing and organization are excellent. You'll learn about the main types of rugs, and how to recognize them -- and how to match and combine rugs. Even in the most elegant settings, we often see POOR combinations; this book gives good, easily-applied guidelines for doing a GOOD job of this.
Some readers criticize the book's pricing guidelines -- but actually they're quite good and very useful, as long as you realize their limitations. Yes, they're simplistic, and the projected rates of appreciation were recognizably absurd even at the time the book was written. (By those formulas, most rugs before long would have attained the value of Fort Knox.) So, the author was a bit innumerate, and anyone who purchased rugs assuming infinite price appreciation has been disappointed. Blame the author? Maybe a little.
A good guide to purchasing that first Parsian Carpet.......2000-06-01
I first encountered Rugs_to_Riches when I was researching and planning the purchase of my Persian Rug. I found five books at my local library, one of them dated 1908, that covered the topic of purchasing and keeping oriental carpets. All of them, with the exception of Rugs_to_Riches stated that "the carpets you buy today aren't as good as the old ones available 30, or 40, years ago." This is basically balderdash!
Rugs_to_Riches proved to be a refreshing exception to this nonsense. It was the best starting guide that a beginner like me could find as I searched out one of those beautiful treasures of the orient. The pricing guides are good for comparison of type & quality, but should not be relied upon for exact valuation of a carpet.
Also, the old rule of "one man's trash is another man's treasure" applies here. Never ever purchase an oriental carpet because it may be valuable. If it doesn't match your home's decor, it'll end it's life as a moth-eaten rag in your closet. Make sure that you actually like the piece before you buy it. I purchased my carpet in a bazaar, not at a dealer's shop in Houston, New York, or even, in L.A. As a consequence, my purchase was *FINAL*! If you plan on purchasing a carpet with even the slightest chance of returning it, because it doesn't match your decor, then go to a reputable dealer. If you are sure of your taste in carpets, design, and home decor, then, grab this reference, and book a flight to the Orient for a haggle-fest.
Finally, on the purchasing of "antique" carpets. Never buy one, unless you see a pattern that you definitely want & you can't get it in a "new" carpet. Most of the price of "antique" carpets is for the (mostly unprovable) antiqueness of the carpet. Only buy an "antique" from a dealer, if you are purchasing one for it's antiqueness. Never, that is, unless you are an "expert", or you can afford to be "taken". Have an "antique" appraised *first* by a reputable 3d party *before* you bid on it. Otherwise, just buy a new one, and remenber that your great grand children will have incontrovertable proof of their "antique" oriental carpet in about 100 years, or so.
All in all, a good book for the beginner. I recommend it.
The best beginners book........1998-09-14
If you are new at collecting, want to know if you want to collect, or just want to know about rugs, this is a good book. Takes you from the beginning and walks you through. Not a book a dealer would use, but one I would recommend for those curious. Beachum's review here on Amazon is a little too harsh in my opinion. While the price of rugs is too fluid and dependent on variables that cannot be captured in a book, there are some valuable points the pricing chapters make for the beginner. Not all rugs appreciate at the same rate. Condition and age are critical. Etc. I found the "value factor multiplier" interesting and roughly accurate - that is - a rank ordering of which type of rugs have appreciated faster over time than others. The focus on the economics of rug collecting was disturbing.
A decent overview for the novice, with worthless price data.......1998-02-23
This book is a decent introduction to oriental rugs for the complete beginner. Unfortunately, its credibility is seriously undermined by its just plain silly pricing information. The book purports to reduce the value of any oriental rug to a formula, and perpetuates the myth that most oriental rugs are investments. Readers are advised to rip out the pricing appendices in the back and throw them away, and simply read the front for an overview of oriental rugs.

This book was purchased as a gift for a Speech and Drama college student.
These kids really enjoy the wit Shakespeare wrote. Knowing which insult to use for appropriate moments is a blast for them!
Deceptive Title.......2006-02-17
I thought this was going to have definitions of the various terms used by Shakespeare, but it only has lists and lists of insults. I admit many of the terms are somewhat straightforward, but I really was trying to find something that would "educate" me about how the insults came about and perhaps their meaning at that time. If you are looking for lists of insults, however, this is the book for you.

This is a fabulous little book that every high school English teacher should have in their arsenal. When the jock in the back row groans when you ask him to read aloud from Hamlet, call him a burly-boned clown. When the popular kid in the front row claims to have forgotten to read the assigned pages from Macbeth, call him Triton of the minnows. Okay, maybe don't, but using it to help you find the curses and insults within the texts, and therefore to help you point them out to your students, will definitely make Shakespeare more fun for them.

Wayne Hill and Cynthia Ottchen have compiled a very useful list of insults from the works of the Master Bard himself!
The book begins with Part I providing a list of ready to use insulting names for the act of "name-calling." Part II examines Shakespeare's major plays and the insulting lines therefrom. Part III ends the book with a list of Ready Insults For Particular Occasions.
Trust me, upon purchase and use of this text, when the content is memorized, you will never be at a loss for words again! Commendable work. Outstanding. Five stars.

Why use your own insults when Shakepeare's are so colorful?.......2001-01-07
Based on the premise that "people NEED insults," Hill and Ottchen here offer a catalogue of every insult the immortal bard ever published. It must have been a tedious collection process, but the work was well worth it; as anyone even the slightest bit familiar with Shakespeare would expect, here in this isolated form his insults reveal themselves as powerful, picturesque, and scathing. The language and the diversity of emotion and expression will not fail to impress you.
My one quibble with the collection is that is seems rudderless in its organization. If we are intended to use the language as our own, why does most of the book consist of a list of insults organized by PLAY (which is hard to use, and a bit tedious to read unless you are treating the book as a concordance for the play itself) rather than by type of insult or applicability? (The final section offers this, but it is VERY short). In terms of content and concept, though, this book makes for a great addition to a classroom, resource collection, letter-writing desktop, or to the Shakeseare-lover's coffee table -- a good gift for the scholar or bibliophile.

You see them everywhere but do you really know them? Here is an opportunity to put a name with the face and maybe find a new old movie or two. More fun is the emergence of TV programs on DVD. Now you do not only know Sam Jaffee from "Shangri-La", but also as Dr. Zorba in "Ben Casey"
The book is inclusive of twelve actors form our past: Elisha Cook , Iris Adrian, Sam Jaffe , Beulah Bondi , Fritz Feld , John Qualen , Charles Lane , Anita Garvin , John Carradine , Rolfe Sedan , Byrt Mustin and George Chandler. We get a general bio and filmography on each character with several black and white photos that include other characters on their periphery. This is a more in depth concentration than the "Filmfax" magazine.

A collection of biographies based on interviews with the 12 actors concerned . The 12 are : Elisha Cook , Iris Adrian, Sam Jaffe , Beulah Bondi , Fritz Feld , John Qualen , Charles Lane , Anita Garvin , John Carradine , Rolfe Sedan , Byrt Mustin and George Chandler . The names are not always familiar but I'll bet you'll recognise at least 10 of the 12 straight away . The details of a character actors life are a bit thin , it would have been more interesting if details of pay and conditions were enlarged upon . But since books like this are uncommon , this is as good as you can get .

I am a piano teacher and my students and I have had fun with this book, the arrangements and variety of music and ability level are really nice. This is not a book for beginners, best for players who have had at least a year of lessons, as most of the duets are higher than level 2.
Learning to play duets!.......2005-07-02
I have been really enjoying this book with my teacher. Some of the music is a little hard for me at this time but will be great fun as I learn to control the keyboard a little more.

Pick 3 #s.......2007-01-20
One often assumes that lotteries are random drawings. This is correct, but what if there were a way to accuratly predict the winning numbers? I have had 3 straight hits using the book and many box hits. 2 of my straight hits were back 2 back. This is the best of 3 lotto books that I've purchased and I will continue to use it daily. This book in no way predicts winning numbers, but it helps you to decide what numbers are most likly to hit and which are not. Keep in mind that lotteries are still random and the balls can pop any way they want. So while this book my not be right for everyone it is right for me. If you play daily lotto games this is a good book to have on the shelf.

Magic not Mathmatics.......2006-03-29
The advice in this book depends heavily on tracking "hot" and "cold" numbers based on recent drawings. There is no attempt to explain why a number may be hot or cold, but we are told that a hot number is bound to appear again soon! There is little or no consideration of probibility, or the fact that declaring a number "hot" with a sample size of 20 (or fewer) random draws is simply unfounded nonsense. On top of this, the author advocates an arbitrary weighting system that gives numbers that appear in first position more significance than numbers that appear later. I can't see how this system is any better than fortune cookies or astrology. There is some coverage of wheels, but this subject is dealt with better elsewhere.
From Page 71 "When a cold number is suddenly drawn as a pair, chances are good that the number will be drawn again soon, at least as a single."
From Page 72: "Remember, the goal is to pick the three numbers that are on the verge of becoming hot. This is your secret to outperforming the average player, just as in the stock market."
From Page 76: While discussing selecting between two "equally matched" numbers - "This is where you have to use your intuition. My gut feeling is to go with the number 1."
This book boils down to wheeling 6 numbers in a pick-3 lottery. The rest is an exercise in magical thinking. I found very little useful information in this book. I did, however, enjoy a few laughs along the way.

After reading the above book, it was a bit complicated for me understanding how to create numbers combinations and wheeling since I don't play the lotto. I feel this book is better suited for experienced lotto players and not someone who is just beginning.

I am always interested in lotto systems and also trying to develop my own. I needed another viewpoint an this book definetily gave me just what I needed. I have a software
independent of what the book recomends but nonetheless still works. Without this book my software was just collecting dust. Very simple instructions. And I love the betting tactics.

In many parts of the world, women are continually portrayed in one of two ways: either in terms of traditional domestic roles or in terms of their sexual appeal to the male population.
