THIS ARE IT.......2006-04-07

As can be seen by some of the reviews, this goes waaaaaay over some peoples heads. For others, it changes lives. I am of the latter category, and i will never be the same after having read this book.

This book does not define Dada. It is Dada........2001-07-22

All manifestos are the biographies of feeble and bitter love. Dada is, therefore, an impotent rapist. Still, Tzara is a charming and likable fellow.

If you want to know what Dada is, then Dada wants nothing to do with you. Approach this book at your own peril.

Dada is against death. Definition is death. This book does not commit murder. Therefore it does not define Dada. It is Dada....

you won't find an explanation of what dada is, simply because it cannot be explained. dada is the anarchism in a french female-boxer soul. is an excellent literary book. not a college research book.

I checked this book out from my local library because Dadaism was mentioned in my Design class, and it sounded interesting. I wanted to learn more about it. I found this book to be very confusing and not very informative at all. It seems that they wrote this so abstract on purpose (which they may have). Although the final essay, lecture on dada, was informative and the essay was, on poetry, was very good. I'd recommend this book just for those two lampistries.

A charming cookbook.......2005-07-19

Recipes are fairly simple, which greatly enhances the probability that the reader will actually use them. Also the recipes aren't so many, which is good since you just need a few good ones, not an confusing endless array of them. Food is put in a context in a humorous way, which is a nice bonus.

The charm of the book made it one of my favorite cookbooks after the first five (thick) pages.

I bought the book for mysel, but I think it would also make a great gift.

Excellent resource for how to get and keep an agent........1999-04-08

The first two-thirds of the book is quite detailed and helpful to any actor needing to get their first of second agent. Most of the info is learned by the time you get going with your career. The list of agents at the end did not seem updated or complete. Also, Ms. Callen seems to have a favorable view of most of the agents, but that has not been my experience when I have met some of them.

Terribly.......2006-05-03

Terrible book. The author of this book had pages filled of "Sid's Diary" which were in fact as he stated in the beginning of the book just a bunch of BS. This book was not even really about Sid and more about how punk got started. I have never been so dissapointed in a book. Don't even waste your two dollars! Trust me this book is not worth it. I'm going to buy another book about him soon, because I learned absolutley nothing frm this one.

Drugs and Beer and Self Destruction.......2004-06-01

El Sid Saint Vicious, by David Dalton, is an in-your-face biography of Sid Vicious. Each chapter is very sloppy and unpredictable, just like Sid himself. The books goes through the life of Sid, as he were telling it, and it does not hold back any details that people may be offended by. This book shows the downward spiral of Sid's life. From drugs to fights it's a path to self destruction. It is a very real and humorous look into the life of a punk legend.
The best part about this book is that it reads as if someone from England was talking to you. I had to read a little slower than normal to make sure I understood everything correctly, but after a little less than a quarter of the book I got used to the accent. Another thing I enjoyed was it had some historical information on fashion and lifestyle in 1970's England as well as history and the formation of punk rock and how it is today. I liked the fact that it is a brutal book and does not hesitate to talk about drugs or racism. Over all, this book is a great book to read if you enjoy punk rock.
Something I did not like about this book is that it has on some pages boxes with big letters that are supposed to be "Sid's diaries." I think this was somewhat distracting and had nothing to do with the chapters. I also thought they did not need to be there because the author wrote them as if Sid wrote them. Another thing I did not like is that the book is intended for readers who should know some history of punk and have a good knowledge of bands. I think this book would be hard for readers who don't know anything about punk rock.

"El Sid" - So NOT About Sid Vicious.......2001-08-20

While as a new but avid Sid fan I wanted to read everything available on the still compelling icon, this superficial tome was way disappointing as a first choice biography. Make no mistake, it's not about Sid Vicious, it's about David Dalton TALKING about Sid Vicious - an entirely different and much less satisfying thing.

Is the photo on the cover Sid? Don't think so. (Is everything else in the book as fake and superficial as the cover? Absolutely DO think so!)

Are the boxed and bolded quotes--distractingly placed throughout the chapters-- Sid's words? No, they are Dalton's ridiculous gimmick of "channeling" Sid's commentary as a supposed unifying feature of the narrative. (Nothing is more irritating than reading an attempt to phonetically reproduce a dialect; plus, examples of Sid's actual recorded voice and words don't reflect the cornball Cockney stupidity that Dalton tries to purvey.)

For me, the only remotely useful feature in "El Sid" was the limited bibliography of other works on Sid and Punk. But even here, in a review of a book which labelled Sid "stupid" and "cheesy", Dalton sniffs, "If you don't get Sid, you don't get Punk!" I don't profess to know a lot about Sid or Punk, but I know Dalton couldn't possibly 'get' either.

If you just have to have all currently available works on Sid, go ahead and buy a (used) version of this book. Otherwise -- pass.

A MINIATURE "ENGLAND'S DREAMING".......2000-05-10

Jon Savage's "England's Dreaming" is the absolute best book on British punk rock and the Sex Pistols. David Dalton's "El Sid" is MUCH MUCH smaller in scope - it is a short book, but it gives a lot of insight as to WHY the Sex Pistols were so NECESSARY to music and pop culture, and bounces back and forth between an irreverent but interesting story of the Sex Pistols and inside boxes on the page, extreme poetic license (!) into the inside of SID'S simple brain, written in crude cockney. It also shows EXACTLY how and why SID had to self-destruct. Just one pic on the cover, but if you love studying punk/Sex Pistols/Sid, this is a small but entertaining look at the Pistols and Sid from a different angle. (And for the person who wrote or implied that SID was worthless, WHY, 21 YEARS after he DIED after a two-year career, at age 21, are there still books being written about him, why is his name known by any average rock n roll fan, and why does his appearance and style continue to fascinate like a Warhol painting?) Even if he was a moron, he unwittingly became a pop culture legend and 2nd level icon, whose image is synonymous with the entire concept of punk rock. And punk rock changed British society and pop culture forever, and much much more than is obvious.

This Guide is alot bigger then the last 2 for the other Devil May Cry Guides, and helps alot more. It has pictures to drool over of Dante and Vergil as well where secrets are located and in depth boss battles. It helps getting through tuff missions and where to find all those blue orbs. This Guide also comes with a bonus fold-out for all of Dante's avaliable moves in each of his classes. So this is a must get for any fan of Devil May Cry, either for help or like me for the gorgeous pictures of Dante, with the bonus of Vergil, Dante's older twin brother. It's true what they say, Sparta's twin sons have differences to work out and it'll be an all out Bishonen Brawl with Dante vs Vergil. Get seats today ^__^

Easy to follow strategy guide.......2002-10-06

Dan Birlew (better known to survival horror fans on the web as "President Evil") penned this easy-to-follow strategy guide.

I'm one of those players who doesn't have great reflexes and normally gets sliced to ribbons playing a game like this. But thanks to Birlew's guide, I was able to survive some of the toughest bosses, bad reflexes and all. The book points out the bosses's strengths and weaknesses, how to attack them and how to avoid them, as every good game guide should.

Oh, yeah, I did find one mistake in Birlew's guide: he states that you can't purchase untouchables (items that temporarily make you invincible). In fact, untouchables can be purchased at any time, though it'll cost you. Perhaps this was a change in the game that was implemented after Birlew's guide went to press.

Even I have to admit that Dan Birlew is getting much better. After that FFIX guide I thought this guy would be bad. Anyways, to start off. I've been a HUGE collector of video game guides (I may be 15 and have high expectations for a guide such as they do need to help me a give me a gaming experience in the process) and I know a good guide when I see it.

This guide is defenitely good. Anyways, I read the other reviews, and Dan Birlew didn't do the Xenogears guide nor did David Cassady, it was Ronald Wartow, its right there on the fron cover. The maps are easy to read while I do admit they get tiresome every guide does. I know the maps aren't done by Dan Birlew but still they could use a little work. I look more at the detail in the walkthrough rather than how flashy the maps and screenshots are.

The walkthrough helps you out a lot and doesn't give off any spoilers at all and gets right to the point. I like this guide because the walkthrough is put together organized and doesn't look like it was rushed to get out. Its 160 pages and the guide has extremely good detail to it. Unlike the Prima (only 90 pages) and VERSUS BOOKS (112 pages) this guide has a ton of info.

I'd recomend this guide for anybody who likes strategy guides as much as I do.

Thorough and Concise.......2001-11-21

Addressing the previous reviewer: Dan Birlew didn't even write the Xenogears guide, someone else named David Cassidy did. And why would you compare Mr. Birlew to Casey Lowe who writes guides for Pokemon? That's comparing apples to apples seeds. As for the maps, they were obviously not done by the author, just read the credits. Now for a more mature and observant review: This particular Devil May Cry guide is concise and thorough. It's written for an audience that is intelligent and sharp, a compliment to all gamers. The writing style does not talk down to the reader, as some guides tend to do. The slick design and stylized cover are done in such a way that it attracts gamers like me--adults with jobs and money to spend on toys. Overall, this guide is perfect for those gamers who do not fall into the "living in my parent's basement" stereotype. Kudos to BradyGames for targeting mature gamers with jobs!

Very good guide much better than all the others.......2001-11-14

This guide is absolutely brilliant in ways that can't all be described! This guide is very detailed with some brilliant things to offer. Detailed maps, great walkthrough, and some bonus material make this DMC guide a must own.

Anyway, the guide really seems to live up to my expectations. Detailed maps of EVERY AREA unlike some of the other guides, and they pin-point the location of items and blue orb fragment. Not to mention that the strategy is very good as well. The maps are colorful and very detailed.

The walkthrough is well done giving you a brief details on bosses. For each boss they show you a suggested Life Gauge and a suggested Devil Trigger. Now thats something that I found really helpful in this guide.

The guide covers all the secrets including how to lock hidden characters and game modes! The guide also features an art gallery and exclusive Interviews! Again, it doesn't hurt to read them!

Overall, this is probably the best DMC guide out there. Much more detail and organization went into the walkthrough. Forget VERSUS BOOKS, this is your perfect guide to DMC!

The ONLY reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because my husband can't find time to finish the rest of the game. Otherwise than that, it's perfect for finding every hidden thing, and it has very detailed maps.

Great guide, great game.......2002-01-22

If you like help, this is the book to buy. This game doesn't really require alot of help, except for the "secret missions." You may find some things you overlooked, or you may get the most out of the game by using the stratagies presented. Not a bad buy, Well written and detailed!

It was pretty helpful........2002-01-07

This review was helpful to me. I was able to beat the game without it, but after I had already beaten the game, I wanted to get the stradegy guide to find any secrets I missed. It turned out there were THREE stradegy guides, and I could only find the Prima Games one. I'm normally a Brady Games Dan Birlew type of guy, but I couldn't find that one, so I just got this one. Now it told me where all of the blue orb fragments and red orbs and all the other colored orbs in the game I missed. It was fairly descriptive on where they were, and I was able to find them ok. It also gave in depth descriptions on tactics for beating bosses. I had already beaten the bosses, but the second time through the game, the tactics helped me beat them with less fault. The maps were very detailed too. It even had a moves reference card to refer to that you could pull out in case you forgot a move and didn't feel like going through the start menu. Now the 2 reasons I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because of the fact that it only covered one mode of gameplay, the normal mode, while it hardly said anything about "Legendary Knight" Mode, "Dante Must Die!" Mode, "Easy Automatic" Mode, and "Super Dante" Mode. It also didn't describe the characters to where you could grow to like them in a way that would get you excited to learn more about them through the game which to me, is a MAJOR thing in a stradegy guide. To other people, it might not seem that big, but in a stadegy guide, it's the little things that make me happy. I did learn to respect Dante greatly, but the way they described him in the guide was just sort of tacky. Well, all in all, I liked the guide from Prima and it helped me out a lot. I never got to compare it to Brady Games or Versus Books Guides, but I would recommend this guide to anyone I knew who needed help with the game.

No notta this ones a NO NO!!.......2001-11-14

I think its clear now that I'm a player's guide freak being that I love them and have one for every game that I own. Anyway in comparison to VERSUS BOOKS and BRADYgames this guide is mediocre to poor.

The guide covers the game okay. Yeah it has all those items and secret missions covered and it has those fantastic 3D maps that tell you where items are located and such but as far as that goes, THE WALKTHROUGH IS DOWN RIGHT HORRIBLE!!

While maps are nice eye candy (yes I like maps just as much as the next person) to look at the walkthrough is not informative enough, and is very disorganized. Again as with VB the guide is too thin. Its like 80 pages long! Not much to get from that. Even if the VB guide was just as thin that one covered EVERYTHING where as this guide DOES NOT!!!

This guide is mainly for those who just want to get down the point and go! It completely leaves out some secrets, and you find yourself asking "What in the hell are they talking about!?"

In other words, I'd check out the guide from VB or BradyGAMES and give this a pass unless you're very desperate to get through the game.

The fans have taken over!.......1999-08-10

A book such as this would have been almost inconceivable a decade ago, such is its dedication to its subject matter. Without wishing to use the comparison in a derogatory manner, the "Dark Shadows Almanac" is a book which reads almost like a fanzine as opposed to a standard reference guide. As such, the serious fans will lap it up, even if their less initiated counterparts will be left scratching their heads in confusion.

Composed of a scrapbook-style mix of bite-size pieces of trivia, rare photographs, cast remembrances and obscure information, the result is a warm tribute which, much like the show it is inspired by, makes up for its occasional instances of over-ambition with a charming sense of enthusiasm.

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of this book is the manner in which it offers a handy way of discovering how great a fan you really are of "Dark Shadows": If you read the text with interest, understanding the feelings of nostalgia and warm remembrance, then you are doubtless part of the fan community already; if you are occasionally left puzzling over elements, then you are well on your way to making the crossover; and if the whole thing leaves you cold, then perhaps the prospect of further initiation is a dish best not served.

In short, this is a book which will be of great appeal to its intended audience, but probably to that demographic only. Speaking as a fan of "Dark Shadows", I think that the book is a fine tribute for readers like myself and, looking at the results, can't help wishing that more viewers of shows were catered for this well.

The Dark Shadows Almanac: 30th Anniversarty Tribute is a wonderful book Published and Edited by Dark Shadows star Kathryn Leigh Scott. Many cast and crew members have written chapters in this book. The foreword was written by David Selby. This book has 176 pages of wonderful memories that all Dark Shadows fans need to share.
