Do You Want to Be Funny?.......2007-05-25
I asked if you WANT to be funny rather than if you think you're funny, because Judy Carter shows that we can ALL be funny if we just dig into our own lives--the good, the sad and the real bad--and find the humor in it. And she shows us how to do just that. Carter's writing style has a way for making you feel she is right there cheering you on. This is not just for those dreaming of standing up in front of a comedy club. It's for anyone who wants to find the humor in their own life AND for those who want to be able to tell their friends a story and have them actually laugh with them not AT them. I LOVE it and learned from it.
great basics.......2007-01-12
This is touted as the Bible of stand-up. There are very good exercises in here as well as funny anecdotes and bits of comedians of the 80's and 90's. It is a bit of a trip down memory lane with the pictures and comedic bits of old but still very helpful. If you have any interest in trying stand-up, I recommend this book. Thinking you are funny and creating funny are two different things and Judy Carter's book helps you learn the difference.

A MUST HAVE.............2006-10-19
This is the best for someone looking to start standup. The book had cool questions for you to fill in the blanks and has phone numbers and networking. I read it and it definately makes you more informative and confident in writing your skits. I'm a comedian so I know. :o)
What a disaster!.......2005-06-11
I've read a lot of these stand-up books now, about five of them, and this one is far and away the worst. If you want to know how to sound like a dated, hack comic -- this is your text. I cannot imagine an evening out being "entertained" by a group of comics that all follow the exercises in this book. I would hang myself before the night was over. This book convinces comics to play AWAY from their voice and to simply take banal observations and wrestle them into tired hyperbolic cliche setup-punch format. Nothing in this book put forward as an example of good comedy made me laugh. Actually, more often than not they made me cringe. The book is dated, the lessons will turn your into an unfunny "joke teller." Do yourself a favor and watch some comedians you find funny and then ask yourself if they are doing anything REMOTELY similar to what this book suggests you need to do to be funny. You'll be surprised. I have to say please don't waste your money on this book unless you actually WANT to be a bad, cheesy, stuck-in-the-80s "comedy stylist."

Informative, witty .......2007-04-02
Thorough, well-written and at times a laugh-out-loud read, this book offers a complete crash course for anyone interested in the history of British cult comedy. Ever wanted to learn more about that unique "British sense of humor", well Julian Hall explores and describes this in the perfect amount of detail. Hall writes about fifty iconic British comics, many television shows, and, my own personal favorite chapter, a wonderful look at the birth and growth of American comedy and it's influence on British comedy. The book is an instuctional read for both those knowlegeable about comedy and those new to the subject matter. Hall provides wonderful references for further investigation, as well as a smart and witty style of writing that could earn himself a place in his own book. This is a must read!

If you want to get up to speed with the UK comedy scene and find out what US comedians and comedy shows influenced British comedy from Eddie Izzard to The Office then this book is the one for you. There's a blog for the book too which is really helpful.

Improvisation Instruction at its best.......2007-09-12
This is the best improvisation book I have come across because it actually has instruction and rules about improvisation. It's not just a list of improv situations and games - it's a real "how-to" and "why" and "what appeals to an audience" book. I teach improvisation and even though other books are great resources, this one is a front runner just because of its instruction aspect of the whole concept of Improvisation.

ANYONE and EVERYONE involved with the Canadian improv games should own this book. Teams who are just starting out, teachers who are thinking of starting a team, and players who have been improvising for years can all benefit from the information. Great skill-developing games, lists of characteristics, genres, and so on to help teams practise, and conprehensive descriptions of each game. Outlines dos and don't of improv. I love this book more than life itself.
One book that lives up to its title!.......2002-10-25
If you are interested in becoming a "player" or coach with an improv team or troupe - this book is all you will ever need. It is organized for easy action and understanding. It is almost always hands-on, explains each technique with real-life examples and never misses the mark. It is like buying a teacher's manual and includes an awesome training schedule and system for whipping any group into a great improv team. I highly recommend this book. I have used it to take 2 teams to the Canadian Improv Games national finals in Ottawa! Buy it!
Who is this book for?.......2002-03-19
I had thought that this book would be a good guide for beginner or experience improvisors to improve their skills; however the book is written with advice on how to start an improv team at a high school and has a great deal of focus on competiting in the Canadian Improv Games (two areas i was just not intersted in). The chapters are very short and try to drop in every improv term without going into depth on any. The book does have a nice list of exercises and suggestions at the end, but many again focus on performating them with younger improvisors and some descriptions weren't complete enough to attempt to use them.
This book would probably be most helpful to someone who is already very familiar with improv and who wants to teach it to high school students. But for the sake of those you are teaching, seek out more complete references like those by Viola Spolin.

They STAY hilarious. I wore out the last set!.......2003-11-19
I was making an all night drive down I-40 and I was sleepy when I started. I stopped at a truckstop in Little Rock and found these, or who knows, maybe God led me to them cause they kept me wide awake all night long. You'll never buy this many of your own chuckles, peels of laughter, and gallons of giggles for this little money - EVER - again in your whole life. That makes this tape set the best deal on the net.
I'm buying a new set for myself and several sets for christmas gifts. But let me warn you, don't ever give out a tape from your own set because no one ever returns them!

This stuff is hilarious! I don't know how they do it. John Pinette at the buffet and his hottest day of the year in the amusement and water park are some of the funniest things I've ever heard, and each tape is somehow better than the previous one, Brian Regan, Pablo Francisco, Richard Jeni - just thinking of them makes me want to listen again. I laughed so hard I cried. I needed that. Don't miss this set. Beg, borrow, (well, don't steal), but get them.

Shocking but True!.......2007-05-14
The book gives a good insight into the wild life of Little Richard which rings true but is nonetheless shocking even for an open-minded reader. Yet,I can't help admire the man for giving it his all and the frank disclosure he affords in his book.
Long Overdue Biography of a King.......2002-09-23
The Homewood, IL reviewer (07-08-01) suggested that the author rushed this work. It's been well-documented in print and on radio interviews that the book took many years to write - in fact the author made several trips from England to California to speak one-on-one with The Quasar himself, his former Managers, sidemen, songwriters, and on and on.
What the reviewer is probably most bothered by is the discography section. Yes, it was poorly edited and lacking in some important details - but it's been suggested that the sessiongraphy was conceived to include a running commentary by Little Richard and to account for, perhaps, one-third of the book. It's understandable that such an approach benefits only deep fans and historians, so the proverbial "bottom line" was apparently applied to the project.
Life & Times...is the author's first book and he displayed a fine writing ability, with a colorful descriptive sense. At times, his hyperbolic approach can make the unitiated uneasy, but considering the bombastic style of the subject, it fits.
Although some parts of his career remain in mystery even after this book release, the better-known periods recieve a thorough review: his childhood years involving sexual confusion and a growing awareness that he had something special to offer the music culture; the swingin' R & B years when R & R was confined to clubs; the R & R Revival period when he made a successful "comeback" and convinced many that he had the greatest voice all along; the struggle with drugs in the early '70s leading to an almost overnight clean-up and a rediscovered spirituality.
Richard was not singing Rock and Roll when the hardcover came out in September, 1984. It is believed that this work created a strong enough interest in his career, that a critically acclaimed "Contemporary Christian" album "Lifetime Friend" and a memorable appearance in Paul Mazursky's movie "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" (which included a Richard Top 50 hit for '86) led to his return to Rock in '89. (Which made some folks, who thought he was better situated in the non-secular world, uncomfortable). But there is no doubt that this book filled a major void in the rock music press.
a shabby scrapbook.......2001-07-09
Little Richard is such an important figure in 20th-century music that it is crucial that there be a biography of him out there. However, this biography is more a scrapbook than a polished work. Oftentimes, you can't tell when the author, Richard, or an acquaintance is speaking. There is no analysis of the events in Richard's life. This book pales in comparison to texts on Billy Strayhorn, Josephine Baker, etc. This book drags on about concert after concert after concert. Besides, Richard is in his homophobic phase at the time of the book's writing and there is no attempt to put his self-loathing into context. I needed to learn more about Richard, so I am glad this book exists. However, this was a poor piece of autobiography and I am surprised that the author did not take the time to fine tune his work.

i enjoyed this book.it details so much.this man is the true king of rock-n-roll.and he has always been upfront about different subjects.he has had an enormous impact on the music world.this book tells of racisim and the constant battle for respect and truth.this man is a true original.

Great Fun for Beginning Latin Students.......2004-08-09
It's so nice to find a supplement that really is easy and can be used by fairly novice Latin students - especially one that is so reasonably priced!!! 50 Crossword puzzles are offered in this volume (with a mix of Latin to English and English to Latin translations) with a list of possible words to choose from at the bottom of each page. (This feature is nice both because it makes it easier for beginning students to choose from a limited vocabulary and because it eliminates confusion about which ending should be used to fit precisely in the crossword.)
This is a fun and easy way to practice vocabulary and have a little variety in your Latin studies.
CAPITALS are correct.......2004-02-14
The reviewer below is barking up the wrong tree. Classical Latin was written in all-caps and without accents or macrons. Even when later Latin came to be written in both upper and lower cases, there were no accents or macrons. Perhaps a little harder for beginners, but that's what textbooks are for (also beware that V will represent both u and v, much as in the Oxford Latin dictionary, because the Romans didn't have two separate letters. Hence why v is pronounced like w or u.) This isn't Greek, and by and large accents don't matter. They're completely regular, in any case, and similar to English - with a little practice you'll put them in the right place naturally. If all caps are annoying, at least they'll teach you to read Latin without the artificial aids of modern editors, and that's a valuable skill to have.
