Book Description

Courtesans, hetaeras, tawaif-s, ji-s--these women have exchanged artistic graces, elevated conversation, and sexual favors with male patrons throughout history and around the world. In Ming dynasty China and early modern Italy, exchange was made through poetry, speech, and music; in pre-colonial India through magic, music, chemistry, and other arts. Yet like the art of courtesanry itself, those arts have often thrived outside present-day canons and modes of transmission, and have mostly vanished without trace. The Courtesan's Arts delves into this hidden legacy, while touching on its equivocal relationship to geisha. At once interdisciplinary, empirical, and theoretical, the book is the first to ask how arts have figured in the survival or demise of courtesan cultures by juxtaposing research from different fields. Among cases studied by writers on classics, ethnomusicology, anthropology, and various histories of art, music, literature, and political culture are Ming dynasty China, twentieth-century Korea, Edo and modern Japan, ancient Greece, early modern Italy, and India, past and present. Refusing a universal model, the authors nevertheless share a perception that courtesans hover in the crevices of space, time, and practice--between gifts and money, courts and cities, subtlety and flamboyance, feminine allure and masculine power, as wifely surrogates but keepers of culture. What most binds them to their arts in our post-industrialized world of global services and commodities, they find, is courtesans' fragility, as their cultures, once vital to civilizations founded in leisure and pleasure, are now largely forgotten, transforming courtesans into national icons or historical curiosities, or reducing them to prostitution.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful and well written.......2006-06-24

The power of the Indian wife was (and perhaps is) her sexual purity. She was neither expected nor permitted to indulge in fine arts or education of any kind. This was reserved for ganikas who were supposed to be well-versed in 64 arts! The writer makes a distinction between the different types of women and the roles they played in the structured caste based society of ancient India.

You learn this and more in this excellent book of essays about courtesans across the ages, in different countries. I was particularly impressed by the write-up on Geishas, Chinese courtesans and the Indian ganikas.

I was surprised to learn that Japanese men were supposed to marry only for procreation. To love one's wife was actually considered low. Like with the Greek civilizations, the Japanese men derived greater pleasure from young boys. Prostitutes served for their pleasure. And slowly, women versatile in arts evolved into Geishas. On the other hand, Chinese women were judged on the basis of their ability to sing. This book certainly provides insights that explain the status of women in society today.

I give this book 4 stars as there seemed to be an imbalance in the geographical coverage of courtesans, with an emphasis on the European ones.

Bottomline: Informative and engaging. Definitely a must read.

      Product Description

This stunning photography book captures the spirit of the now almost lost tradition of the English seaside holiday. The photographs - all taken from English Heritage's unique collection of over ten million images held in the National Monuments Record - show how the English used to take their summer holidays before cheap flights and package deals made foreign holidays affordable to all and led to the decline of the English seaside resort. From Victorian bathers to 1950s beach huts, from 19th-century fishermen to long destroyed landmarks such as New Brighton's tower (higher than its more famous rival, Blackpool) and from Punch and Judy shows to donkey rides, the book reminds us how England has changed as a nation and what has been lost forever.

Beautifully reproduced photographs with adequate explanatory text--but this book proves the adage, "a picture is worth a thousand words". Made me eager to learn more about this interesting topic. Would appeal, I think, to both nostalgists and social historians. Organized by resort town, with a couple pages devoted to each.

          Book Description

Welcome to the next evolution in humor.

In the spirit of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, The Darwin Awards II: Unnatural Selection brings together a fresh collection of magnificent misadventures, honoring those who continue to improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it in a sublimely idiotic fashion.

Salute the owner of an equipment training school who demonstrates the dangers of driving a forklift by failing to survive the filming of his own safety video. Heed the story of the honest bricklayer who loses a battle of wits with 300 pounds of tools. Witness the man who becomes a victim of his own "strange and unusual passion for jumping into rivers." And watch Darwin Award winners selflessly join the ongoing fight against the seven deadly sins as lust, vanity, gluttony, greed, sloth, envy and wrath all exact their evolutionary toll on the overindulgent.

Featuring science and safety discussions designed to aid those vigilant enough to avoid the scythe of natural selection, and including the most inspiring dozen Darwin Awards from the last century, this new compendium of serious humor and cautionary tales -- verified by the author and endorsed by website readers -- shows us anew how uncommon sense can be.

          5 out of 5 stars SOOOO FUNNY.......2005-11-17

This book was funnier than the first one. It just made me laugh and laugh. I could never put it down. I took it with me everywhere I went just so that I could read another story of what someone did that was stupid. It is so funny to me of how dumb some people can be. They dont even think about what they are doing before they do it. Like one lady who was mad at her ex-lover so she pulled out a knife and stabbed him. The worst part was that he was piloting the plane they were in. She did not think that one through. That is not even the funniest of stories that they have in the book. This will be the best book that you ever buy.

          5 out of 5 stars Unintelligent Designs.......2005-09-01

In a media atmosphere that values balance - that is the unfiltered broadcast of diametrically opposing views - there is a need for a voice that seprates the truth from the chaff. Wendy Northcutt and her Darwin Awards team is one of those voices.

Northcutt presents confirmed incidents, known urban legends and personal accounts (all carefully dated, labeled and annotated) to form a highly readable and very entertaining gumbo of the lunacy of human beings. The Darwin Awards, of course, are given to those who have improved the human gene pool by removing themselves from it. The stupider, more unlikely and bizarre the manner, the better.

From the guy who played Russian Roulette (with deadly results) to impress girls, to the guy who literally lost his head looked down a malfunctioning fireworks tube, to the Egyptian shepherd shot by one of his own flock, the examples of human carelessness, arrogance and stupidity just keep coming.

Northcutt is doing a real public service; not only helping the rest of us separate fact from fancy, but (hopefully) teaching her readers that being careful is not just prudent but can help them keep their heads.

          1 out of 5 stars I'm so ashamed!.......2005-01-20

I bought this book in a moment of weakness. I knew about the Darwin Awards, having received samples of same over the internet. The better part of my nature informed me that the very notion of finding something funny in stories of stupid misadventures with tragic consequences was . . . (how you say?) . . . wrong. Wrong and stupid. If a dim-witted child guffaws at these stories, one makes allowances. For an adult to enjoy them is beyond the pale.
There are some who are horrified at the practice of book-burning. Well, I am not. I love books, but I had a nice little bonfire with this one, and the world was a better place for it.

4 out of 5 stars Proof of Stupidity.......2004-10-09

Volume II of the Darwin Awards is great for anyone that likes to have a good chuckle. These stories are short so you can read about multiple peoples lack of common sense in just a short time.

5 out of 5 stars The Darwin Awards 2.......2004-10-05

The Darwin Awards 2 is a great book if you like comedy. The Darwin Awards 2 is a series of stories of people doing the stupidest stuff. The stories in The Darwin Awards 2 will make laugh harder than you've ever laughed before.

Wendy Northcutt's writings are mostly comedy. Wendy Northcutt also writes The Darwin Awards and The Darwin Awards 3. Wendy Northcutt does a lot of things well in her books but one of the things she does really well is that she doesn't make each story long and boring but that she shortens them and gets down to the point. I would recommend this book to anyone.

                  Book Description

She dazzled millions as Gigi. Eliza Doolittle. Holly Golightly. But to her most adoring fan, Audrey Hepburn was best known for her role as "Mummy."

In this heartfelt tribute to his mother, Sean Hepburn Ferrer offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of one of Hollywood's brightest stars. Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit is a stunning compilation of nearly 300 photographs, many straight from the family album and never before published; archival documents, personal correspondence, and mementos; even paintings and illustrations from the actress herself.

Sean tells Audrey Hepburn's remarkable story, from her childhood in war-torn Holland to the height of her fame to her autumn years far from the camera and the crush of the paparazzi. Sean introduces us to someone whose grace, charm, and beauty were matched only by her insecurity about her appearance and talent, and who used her hard-won recognition as a means to help children less fortunate than her own. With this unique biography, Sean celebrates his mother's history and humanity--and continues her charitable work by donating proceeds from this book to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and Charming.......2007-07-25

This book was pleasant and thoughtful, as is its subject. Though admittedly the writing was far less enchanting than I would have expected; I like to think it was kept simple to further emphasize the simplicity and sincerity of Audrey herself. This book did not add any revelation for the reader about her life; but instead, allowed for a glance at Audrey Hepburn's everyday existence. I was constantly amazed at how strong and genuine her character when faced with life's sometimes complicated decisions. This book shows Audrey as a person who effortlessly put others before herself, and seemed to never question her sense of what is right.

Even the idea of such simplicity has become a fairytale in our lives, and it is so refreshing to read about someone who was capable of remaining so solidly pure, that I cannot help but read a little more. One need only look to her work with UNICEF to know how first-rate she truly was.

I love everything about this book. I like the photos. I like the interesting story. And how Mr. Sean Hepburn Ferrer includes a reproduction of Audrey's birth certificate. Obviously, this is a
well-documented book. Authentic and sincere. I wish Mr. Ferrer had chosen a more stunning photo for the cover. The cover is kind of blurry and not very focussed I love black and white photos Colored ones are nice too but not blurry, indistinct ones.

Great book by the writer Mr. Kent! The only problem that I came across was the that the pages fall out with minimal use. Warnig!!! Don not treat this book as a standard book!

3 out of 5 stars No meat romp.......2005-05-29

This book was an utter let-down. I was pumped up ready to dive into this book after reading the previous reviews here on Amazon. The reviews made it sound like it was a solid book with a lot of detailed information regarding the actual "making of doom 3". This book in reality is a half-assed, piece-mailed collage of hype and fluff. There is no meat here. Steven Kent is not David Kushner, and this is not "The Masters of Doom" (part 2)... very unfortunately.

What I was expecting from this book was stuff about how the team created what they created (which the book does, to some extent), but more importantly, WHY. What were the reasons for making certain decisions, what were the challenges they had to overcome, what technological barriers did they break, and how did they persevere together, as a team? I also wanted to know about the personal stories and the inner happenings of the game in production. I wanted to learn about the conflicts between the developers and the motivations for doing things they way they did. I wanted to know what kind of pizza they ordered after working 80+ hours a week, and how many liters of Mountain Dew they consumed as a whole. None of this was even pretended to be addressed.

What the book does is a cheap, glossed-over summary of doom 3. It talks about the doom story mostly and tells some basic information about how things were created. (Anyone already in game development will surely recognize the provided information as elementary and immediately self-evident.)

About the only good thing in this book is the Question and Answer Section with John Carmack. As always, John provides a real treat by articulating his knowledge of technical issues and world view opinion in the most elegant way. The author, Steven Kent, gets one point here for not editing Carmack's dialogue; for Carmack, on a number of occasions, seems to poke fun at the interviewer's most obvious lack of game development knowledge.

Get this book if you are interested in game design (but have no previous knowledge) and/or if you are a die-hard id fanboy.

5 out of 5 stars Game/Visual Design Students and FPS fans will LOVE this! .......2005-04-04

I purchased both this book and the Half-Life 2 'Raising the Bar' book together for a discounted price. Both are exceptional and both I HIGHLY recommend owning.

The Doom 3 book is far heavier on word count and focuses on the entire production of Doom 3 as opposed to the sporadic comments and captions grouped with pictures in 'Raising The Bar'. Having said that both are different and will appeal to everyone interested regardless.

Both are printed on very high quality paper, 'Raising The Bar' even having a hard cover, a sore omission from The Making Doom 3. The content is brilliant with hundreds of images gracing throughout and insights into the making of these games. I particularly liked reading about the ideas, monsters and objects that were cut from the final games. Seriously, every gamer or visual artist/designer should own these, awesome and inspirational 'picture' books to have laying around.

SO! If you are a fan-boy or girl of either game, get both, they are EXCEPTIONAL READING and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight into ID software.......2005-01-03

This book gives a great insight on the inner workings of ID software. The paper used in the publication of this seems to be extremely high quality. My only gripe is the book is not hardcover. Overall Steven Kent does a great job as usual. If you want to understand how ID works this book will explain alot.

5 out of 5 stars Giid Job Guys.......2004-11-24

Steven Kent was given extraordinary access to the creative team doing Doom 3 while the project was under develoment. In this book he charts that development from early conception and the development of details like a new graphics engine that would do the actual on screen graphics. He then moves on to the development of characters, locations, and sounds that make the game what it is. One by one the developers are introduced, often by interview. And the developers get to say their prospective on the game and their part in it. The book is profusely illustrated showing the characters in the sceens where they belong.

It is surprising, no incredible to me that the game of Doom 3 was created in total by a team of some 22 peop.le.

5 out of 5 stars Picking up where she left off.......2006-07-11

Management consultant Eileen Shapiro picks up where she left off in her last book, Fad Surfing in the Boardroom (Addison-Wesley, 1995). There, she tore at the heart of management gurus and fads. In The Seven Deadly Sins of Business: Freeing the Corporate Mind from Doom-Loop Thinking, she focuses on the myths and beliefs underlying most management decisions. She argues, wisely, that the main task of smart managers is to "take, shake, or break." That is, to "decide which of the implicit rules of business to take as givens, which to shake up with minor patches or major revisions, and which to break entirely and then remake." Her seven sins fall under the categories of strategy, organization, or information. The foundation of the book is her take that once rules become known in an organization, it's tough to change them, even if everyone knows they need to be changed.

The book is rich with company examples and includes a second installment of the devil's dictionary she introduced in Fad Surfing, which further debunks the terms commonly thrown around in business. You'll never accept a process, term, fad, technique, or no-brainer decision at face value again.

5 out of 5 stars Self-deceptive thinking knows no bounds.......2003-04-09

It is the author's contention that many businesses are not "focally" aware of the actual rules and mindsets by which they operate. The author has identified seven general areas where businesses "sin" by falling sway to illusory actions and thinking. They operate in a "doom loop of unchallenged beliefs, faulty predictions, incorrect rules, inappropriate actions, and disappointing results." Obviously, there is the potential for severe repercussions for a business and its associated stakeholders for not being firmly grounded in reality.

The author breaks the "sins" into three groupings. The first, the three "Sins of Strategy," is mostly concerned with the disconnection between formal plans and actual company operations and product development and strategies versus marketplace realities. It is here that fine sounding words, such as "quality, empowerment, productivity, low-cost producer, and customer-driven," devoid of concrete content relative to a specific enterprise, are loosely tossed about. Ongoing conversations about strategies, one way to prevent these sins, are sidetracked or distorted by unexamined and unchallenged preconceptions or by the idea-suppressing dominance of top management. The author illustrates the connections that businesses should be making between pricing and costs versus customer benefits and expectations with some simple and interesting models and graphs.

The pseudo empowerment of employees and the substitution of corporate "sizzle" for meeting employee wants and needs are at the heart of the second group of sins, the "Sins of Organization." The ubiquitous corporate claim that "people are our most important asset," is no more than empty rhetoric without considerable investment - both time and money - in the workforce and the subsequent buy-in to the corporation's goals by each employee. It is the sin of "banking on turbo-charged employees" to confer the shell of empowerment on employees with insufficient inner-core skills to make company-enhancing decisions. Perceptive managers should understand the cumulative effect on a business of the hundreds of decisions made every day by inadequately trained employees, especially those in the service sector. The author suggests that employees be trained in the use of an "OODA" strategy for decision-making consisting of the steps of "observation, orientation, decision, and action." The alternative approach of simply not permitting employee discretion is seldom viable.

The sin of "focusing on workplace sizzle" is a very shortsighted approach to employment by businesses. In that view, the offer of a "financial package, some fancy words, a set of marching orders, and penalties for failure to comply" is entirely sufficient for a workforce. That view is often reinforced through carefully crafted internal company surveys that invariably show employees as being happy with this employment relationship. Employees who do not accept the sizzle approach will simply leave or will be dismissed - according to the remainder of this policy. But this is where the myopia of management arises. Such employees usually do not leave. Dissatisfied employees are often not detectable and are not inclined to risk acting in a precipitous manner. The prudent company will realize that for a "willingness factor" to be unleashed, a set of fairly constructed WIF-MEs (what's in it for me) will have to be provided to employees, which includes, among others, adequate and fair pay, good working conditions, training, empowerment, and respect. The commission of this sin can result in companies "charging forward at full throttle, only to realize later how few troops are following in their wake."

The third category of sins, "the sins of information," reinforces the previous sins because they interfere with the information flows that could counter illusory thinking.
In the sin of "taking pride in being a learning organization," those with cherished ideas and secure positions cling to the notion that they and their organizations are open to wide-ranging inputs, but, in actuality, are unwilling to endure the discomfort and ramifications of such openness. Unwanted ideas are deflected in various manners. Closely related is the sin of "investing in sophisticated forward intelligence systems." Despite investment in such intelligence gathering techniques as open-door policies, management by walking around, suggestion boxes, and brown-bag lunches with top management, little intelligence is gleaned. Not surprisingly, the costs, ranging from the penny-ante to some far more severe, to those providing information are not reduced. Management often adopts the pretense of an equal partnership in gathering information, that is, that they downplay the ability to inflict severe consequences to those delivering information. In other cases, the roadblocks to information flow are an obsessive and convenient adherence to lengthy processes that will ensure the staleness and unusability of the information. This category of sins is especially pernicious to organizations in its insidious effects.

There is no doubt that many businesses operate in the modes that the author has detailed. The degree of intent in the commission of these sins can be speculated upon. The sins of strategy fall somewhat into the category of marketing mistakes - something no business would purposely do. The sins of organization, especially creating workplace sizzle, and the sins of information directly impact the power relationships in a business. It is not going too far out on a limb to suggest that these sins are committed to maintain power despite any long-term detrimental effects. In fact, the issue of power and its impact on all of the sins floats on the surface of this book. The author could have addressed the question as to whether the typical structure of US businesses necessarily results in these "sins." Along that line, would democratically organized and operated businesses have the same tendencies to engage in illusory thinking?

The author urges appropriate "take-shake-or-break" action for management: take or accept the implicit rules of a business; shake up the rules with minor patches or major revisions; or break up the rules entirely and begin anew. But the value of this book is in its descriptions of the operating holes and thinking traps into which business can fall. It is one of the more prescient management books that I have read. One of the few that can rate five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice delivered with rapier wit.......2000-06-09

If your organisation is planning carefully, implementing flawlessly and managing brilliantly - and still not getting the results it wants, the chances are it is committing one or more of the Seven Deadly Sins of Business. This book is a genuine 'must read'.

Eileen Shapiro follows her own precepts. She claims that many failures of business plans can be traced back to inadequate or faulty observation. Her book is based on very careful observation, backed by a formidable analytical capacity, a rapier wit and direct and forceful writing. It is a sort of modern equivalent for today's executive of the King's clown in the middle ages - a sceptical eye to remind him that he 'is but a man' and therefore at risk of the errors and occasional blindness to which everyone is subject, particularly when seduced by success.

Shapiro goes further and outlines the simple tools which, when used consistently and well, can provide some protection from these errors. If the book were a sermon - and it is far too funny to be that - its text would be her quote from Pogo of the comic strip 'We have found the enemy ... and the enemy is us'.

Her selected sins, in short form, sound like the seven cardinal virtues - but the bite is in the tail:

"* Trusting in your terrific plans ... even though you have lost sight of what your real strategy is. * Reinvesting in your outstanding products ... while the market is moving in a different direction * Focusing on playing to win ... when in fact you're playing the wrong game by the wrong rules. * Assuming a team of turbo-charged employees ... while short changing the investments needed to build workforce judgment and skill * Focusing on workplace sizzle ... but neglecting to provide the motivation that matters * Taking pride in being a learning organization ... even though key decision makers are unable or unwilling to see the facts for the creed. * Investing in sophisticated forward intelligence systems ... while consistently falling backward in the battles that count."

The short Introduction (do *not* skip it) sets the framework, including a brief statement of the sins and their genesis and of the three premises on which the book is based:

                    * The essence of a manager's job is to make difficult decisions intelligently, in environments of continuing and unpredictable change. * Change is a constant, but is lumpy and a combination of the predictable and the unpredictable. *The enemy of making good decisions is not change per se, which is just a fact of business life, but unchallenged beliefs, which are a matter of managerial choice.

Each Deadly Sin then gets its own chapter, starting with a series of dot points identifying symptoms that each may be present. The chapter contains headings highlighting the issues and possible cures.

Common sense tools appear in every chapter. What is important is that Shapiro shows how to apply them perceptively, with useful and sometimes jaw-dropping examples.

She ends, very appropriately for a book with this title, with Ten Commandments for Freeing the Corporate Mind - which deserve careful attention.

The cycle of organisation learning and 'mental models' are at the core of this book. Critical to success in avoiding or overcoming the 'sins' are the quality of conversation within the organisation, how well it uses the cycle of learning at an individual, small group and whole organisation level and how well it uses difference to enrich joint perceptions. Three other excellent books that take up these issues in greater depth are: Ellinor and Gerard: 'Dialogue' Leonard-Barton: 'The Well-Springs of Knowledge' Dixon: 'The Organizational Learning Cycle'

4 out of 5 stars Solid insight & advice. Highly Recommended.......1999-04-17

Hightly Recommended! Like her previous book, Fad Surfing in the Boardroom, Eileen Shapiro cuts through the detrious of trends, fads and the latest management quick fix, to focus in on the essence of practical,common-sense management. Granted the cutesy "seven deadly" aspect of the title and dustcover, Shairo immediately cuts to the chase to address serious blindspots regarding strategic planning, communication, personnel management, etc. Replacing almost any other management book on your bookshelf with this one will increase their overall contribution to your management insight and performance.

                                    Book Description

News Writing and Reporting takes students on the beat, into the press box, council chambers, and courthouse, and to a speech and press conference. It introduces them to current issues such as cultural sensitivity, multimedia journalism, and legal and ethical considerations that journalists face every day. Throughout the text, reporters and editors offer their down-to-earth advice, and, whenever possible, professional journalists covering actual stories are used as instructional models. Students are exposed to the work of professionals while gathering the tools to follow in their footsteps.
