As a veteran of over forty years on Broadway as a scenic, lighting and projection designer, I can say without hesitation that there is no other resource more valuable than The Entertainment Sourcebook. This wonderful resource is compiled by the folk who do the hard, often unseen and unmentioned, work that make us with prominent program credits look good on opening night. Not only are the listings accurate, but they are constantly monitored by the members of ATAC, added to, and changed or eliminated when required. So you're always up-to-date. In this age of fast-paced change in "the business", it's extra vital to be well informed. I'd bet my Tony nominations on this book. In fact without it, I'd probably not have them. And a big "hat's off" to the people of ATAC who make this great ever changing resource possible.

I was awfully excited when I was asked to write a book. I was however, nervous. I was afraid I didn’t have anything important to say. But when I began writing, I realized that although I don’t know a lot about any one thing, I know a little about a whole bunch of things: baking a pie; dancing; curing the common cold; running the Iditarod–it’s all in the book. And I realized I notice things that maybe some people don’t notice (or they don’t notice that they don’t notice). That’s all in the book, too.

People Who Missed THE POINT Are Idiots.......2006-02-25

If you bought this book expecting some life-altering "point" she had...you were just plain stupid. Since when has Ellen, "The Funniest Person In America" ever been serious in entertainment venues? Free clue: NEVER.

I've seen "reviewers" blather on and on about, "Oh, this book has no point...she should rename it. It was just endless ramblings and oh, me oh my, I wish I could get a refund!" These people ought to have their book-buying privileges revoked. Shut up, already.

Ellen's books are nothing more than an extension of her stand-up comedy...and if that's not what you like...buy a different book! What is so appealing and lovable about Ellen is her ability to say a whole lot...without saying really anything at all. THAT is what is funny about it. Her RAMBLING! THAT is the point. And if that point flew over your alleged head...tough.

It's amazing. EVERYONE'S a literary critic. "Oh, dear me, I just read this book and I just don't understand what her point was. She should stick to stand up comedy. Oh, Lordy, Lordy, Ellen should talk to ME before she writes, because, after all, HER life is about ME!" Perhaps you should stick to whatever vocation YOU chose...Then, when you get enough credence and success behind you...maybe YOU can write a book...and then WE all can dump all over it and talk about how crappy it is.

Ellen is a comedic genius...the type that translates perfectly into whatever venue she chooses...stand up...sitcoms...talks shows...or simply hosting an awards show.

I laughed out loud at the fools who foamed on and on about how she talked throughout the book about how her publisher demanded a certain amount of words...like that was something she didn't do intentionally. What maroons. Please...please...put the book down. Before you hurt yourself or somebody else. Yikes.

Anyone who has seen or heard Ellen before will love this book. Worth the time to read, though it doesn't take much time to get through. I read it in an afternoon. Great book.

In a book of 60,000 words, I only found a couple hundred to be VERY funny.

Disappointing and then some..........2005-02-24

I am one of the biggest Ellen fans out there, but this book was probably her worst job. I found it to be mostly her early stand-up routine put down on paper. And since Ellen is largely funny because of her comical looks, it left the humor hanging. Seriously, being an Ellen fan from the start, I would sit and tell the jokes before I read them off the page. If she was going to do a book about jokes, she should have at least come up with some new material. And she is blatantly honest about the financial motives of writing the book, and even ends the final page by writing random words so that she can meet her publisher's word quota because she has run out of funny material. All I can say is thank goodness I picked up my copy at a flea market for a buck and didn't pay a much too large price for a repeat of her show.

Rigourous analysis and research on the politics of muslims in France.......2006-09-07

As a researcher doing work in the same area, I can say that there is no other book that tackles this subject, which manages to take seriously ethnicity AND political engagement. A necessary book if you want to know what's really going on with Algerian immigrants and their children in France.
Theoretically, Silverstein manages to take a critical perspective without delving too deep into postmodernism, and his empirical research supports his conclusions. A wonderful and convincing anecdote to Huntington and Lewis-like Clash of Civilizations arguments, Algeria in France draws on historical, anthropological, sociological, and literary references to make its case.

This is a collection of activities and exercises that you can use during training or meetings (or even alone) to reduce stress and make you more relaxed. Some of the activities are quite good especially the breathing exercises and the visualizations. However, there are quite a few activities that are quite ridiculous as well as others that are just not possible at work or in the training room.

For trainers, many activities are useful as icebreakers or as stress-reducers after a heated discussion. The reason I bought the book in the first place is because I could not find anything else in that category, so I guess there isn't really that much choice.

Personally, I think this book is easy to read and understand. The games presented in the book are unique and simple to apply. Many companys and businesses experience stress daily. Therefore, this book provides numerous ways to help relieve stress in the workplace. I strongly recommend this book.

I agree with the previous reviewer that this book is too focused on therapy-type games instead of games that teach more practical skills. I teach stress management for a municipal government, and the games in this book (particularly the visualization and role-playing exercises) are definitely not oriented toward the needs of most workplace environments.

This was a well written book. The author gives a heartfelt account of her life in foster care. She begins her story as a small child in rural Maine and concludes as an adult actress in Hollywood. This is a great book that deals with foster care, mental illness, achievements, and adversity in a young woman's life.

Wanted more of an autobiography.......2007-08-16

I know the title says the women who raised me, but I really wanted to read more about how she got into acting, what it was like to be on the young and the restless and work with dick van dyke. She spends many chapters about her ballet years, but doesnt mention what it was like to get into tv acting, which is really her career, not ballet. She is known for being a TV star. She did a great deal of research into her families/friends - I think too much. I had to skip many many pages because it got boring. She mentions her marriage, but never talks about getting divorced. I never knew if she married Wynton or not, had to look it up on the net. She doesn't get into her relationships with men much or her children. I got the impression Wynton was raising her son? but who knows. She seems very multi talented though and it was great that she put so much time into writing a book in addition to her other charities/career.

This is an exceptionally touching journey through the life of a foster child that was exposed to a number of phenomenal women.

All their lives were woven together beautifully by the author [Rowell]and revealed that despite backgrounds that were so different, these women all exhibited determined, giving spirits through their own talents.

A very touching story , well written and informative. So sad at times. I loved that there were pictures of these incredible women to put faces on the heroes! Inspiring too, that with love and guidance, our children can thrive in difficult life situations.
As a grandmother to a mixed race child, very distubing also, that we still have so far to go in the US.

I could not put down Ms. Rowell's life journey. I knew very little about her, only that she was an actress in a soap opera. She is an incredibly strong woman. I have great admiration for her. She could so easily have turned her back on her painful past and distanced herself from orphans; but she chose not to. She embraces her birth mother and all who assisted her.

This book contains every bit of information a fan could want regarding anyone who has appeared on a TV soap opera since the genre's inception. Annette D'Agostino has done a wonderful job in researching and writing this charming and funny book that appeals to everyone -- even those who aren't big soap fans. Not only are the bios of those whose careers began in soaps enjoyable and entertaining, D'Agostino's summaries of soap history and listing of all soap operas is fascinating. Well done!
