Book Description
A Book of the Month Club Selection, and winner of the Broadway Theatre Institute and Benjamin Franklin awards, The Everyday Work of Art has earned a wide, varied and passionate following in the arts, education, business, and spiritual communities. Its wide appeal springs from its unique and powerful redefinition of art. This is more than the "nouns" of art that fill museums and concert halls. This is the art in which all people engage in bits and pieces throughout the day whenever we use the same "verbs" of art that artists use. The Everyday Work of Art illuminates the artistry we all practice, and it enables us to reclaim the fun and satisfaction that is already happening unnoticed right under our noses. Discover why Yo-Yo Ma calls this book "a joy to read" and why critics, celebrities, artists, educators, philosophers, students and parents have become enthusiastic readers and practitioners of The Everyday Work of Art.

There Aren't Enough Stars.......2007-07-22
I logged on here to get a link and some other data in order to be able to tell others about this book. (I've been telling others about it for a long time now.) I discovered that there are only two reviews (!?) for this book here. Let me hasten, then, to add mine:
This ought to be required reading for every individual before they graduate from high school.
Of all the books that I recommend to others (of which there are many), this remains at the very top of the list...numero uno.
Of the over 200 books I have read on the use of one's mind, body and spirit to achieve and create excellence in one's pursuits of life, this provides the most complete survey of how to use one's sensory intake --how to pay attention -- than the rest.
A Must Read.......2001-10-02
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. In very
clear and insightful language, Booth reveals the wonder
of "experiencing" the art of living. Over and over
again, I experienced "Ah, Hah" moments while reading
this book. This book would make an ideal gift.
Inspirational.......2000-04-26
This book was an unexpected gem! From the opening words, through the very last chapter, I was caught up in how well the author was able to translate the sometimes esoteric world of creativity for the everyday person. His down-to-earth style helped the subject come alive and after reading the Everyday Work of Art, I feel I can start living more creatively. As a side note, the book's cover, with it's clever cut-outs, compliments the book very well. A supurb package and read!

great book.......2007-05-13
This is a great book that i purchased for my 8 year olf son after a really bad bullying incident at school. With the help of the book and roleplaying situations using the information in this book he is enjoying coming up with new ways to handle meanies.
Great book.......2007-01-10
No matter if you are working with the bullies or the kids being bullied, this s a great resource!
Useful and simple.......2006-06-27
My 8 year old son spent about 40 minutes with this book and the next day he and his best friend were using the book's concepts to invent good resposes to insults. That's what I call practical.
A Speech Therapist's Review.......2006-04-05
This book is terrific for kids who have a difficult time understanding that they can answer back peers who tease. It allows them to grasp the concept that kids do tease, and they can be empowered to choose a technque such as "Play the Game" to respond. I roleplay these scenarios with my patients so that they can use the right tone of voice and body language. They enjoy it, and there is buy-in for practice.
Totally not connected to the real world kids today are stuck with.......2005-11-30
"Teasers and meanies" don't exist anymore, if they ever did. And "bullies" are going to have a lot of fun with your child if you are naive enough to give a 4th - 7th grader this book.
Kindergarten, maybe.
If you've got a kid experiencing bully problems, you need to be aware that giving bad advice is worse than doing nothing. Do your research - research your kid's school situation, research real-world bullying situations, and above all avoid books like this one. Try reading "Lord Of The Flies" instead - it's a lot closer to what today's schoolyard culture is really like.
Think of a wolf pack or a chicken pecking-order. Kids bully to enhance their own position. Your child needs to learn how to act strong, because weak chickens get pecked to death.
Other kids - even "nice" ones - will either join in or do nothing. For one thing, they have their own position to worry about, and if they defend your child, they may become the new target.
Also, there's a strong cultural belief that suggests victims invite their own abuse. As the late Ann Landers put it, "nobody can take advantage of you without your permission". Let's face it: we don't sympathize with wimps, whiners, clueless people, professional victims, the "politically correct", "people who play the blame game", etc. School counselors like to post things like "Who ever said life was fair?" on their walls. Forget about "justice" or "fair play". That may be commonplace in the grownup world, but it isn't real on the schoolyard.
By the time a bullied kid gets to the 7th grade, he or she may very well be experiencing real physical abuse, vandalized lockers, obscene graffiti, vicious rumours, having their stuff stolen and trashed, internet slander campaigns, sexual harrassment, near-total ostracization - and all of this is fairly routine stuff. The really "serious" bullying is terrifying; it can include things that would be considered "violent crimes" if the public schools weren't held to a different standard.
Bullied kids can be seriously scared to go to school - one of the tipoffs that your kid may be having bully problems is when he or she wants to stay home sick all the time.
Do your kid a favor. Skip this book and just talk to him or her about how things are at school, and LISTEN to your kid if he or she tries to tell you there are problems. Skip the cutesy advice; not only does it not work, but it's one of the biggest reasons kids "know better" than to try to talk to grownups about the problems they're experiencing. And - if your kid is really having problems with bullying - don't rely on school officials. If they knew what they were doing, your child would not be going to the sort of school where bullying is allowed to occur.
One book I would recommend (instead) for a 4th grader is Judy Blume's "Blubber". It was written a long time ago, but it captures that wolf-pack mentality that grownups typically seem to "just not get".
This book might not be bad for a younger child. But NOT for the 4th to 7th grade listed in this book's info blurb.

L'Avventura (The Adventure), the movie that put director Michelangelo Antonioni on the map, is a masterpiece. For Geoffrey Nowell-Smith, editor of The Oxford History of World Cinema and author of this book, "no film before or since has ever made such an impression on me.... It is a film which makes the world look different, and after which other films look stale."
The plot is deceptively simple. A beautiful young woman mysteriously disappears while touring off the coast of Sicily. Though initially distressed at this loss, her lover and best friend fall in love, betray one another, and then make some hesitant moves toward reconciliation. Nowell-Smith demonstrates that Antonioni transformed this tale into an astoundingly profound meditation on romance, friendship, personal identity, women's autonomy, living in the modern world, even meaning itself.
The author also tells the fascinating history of the film's production (and how close Antonioni came to shutting down shooting before he completed the picture!) and its troubled, but ultimately enthusiastic, critical and popular reception. As an added treat, the volume closes with what Nowell-Smith considers the best essay written about Antonioni, a speech delivered in 1980 by the great critic Roland Barthes. In it, Barthes considers three features of Antonioni's work, "which to my mind constitute the artist: vigilance, wisdom, and, most paradoxical of all, fragility." --Raphael Shargel
Book Description
Michelangelo Antonioni's starkly beautiful L'avventura is one of the great masterpieces of European art cinema, though at Cannes in 1960 it baffled and enraged its first audience. The plot is simple: a woman disappears while visiting a tiny, remote island with friends and it's as if they don't notice that she's gone. What has happened to her? L'avventura disclaims the conventions of narrative cinema in the most radical way: it never provides an answer to this question.
Antonioni has often been labelled pessimist but, as Geoffrey Nowell-Smith argues, his work is not judgemental and is better described as sceptical, concerned with truth rather than consolation. L'avventura seems indifferent to either progress or decadence, Nowell-Smith writes: its characters are placed fairly and squarely where they are, with no past to return to or future to advance to. Stripped of consoling certainties, existentially alone, they are observed with a meticulousness that takes nothing for granted.
As well as detailing the circumstances of production, Nowell-Smith relates L'avventura to other groundbreaking films of the period and to all of Antonioni's earlier and later work. In order to appreciate the significance of L'avventura, he concludes, it is necessary to understand not only that the film is a classic but also that it was a revolution in cinema.

Product Description
A play in Italian by Ignazio Silone.
Awarded the Premio Campiello in 1968.

". . . required reading for anyone interested in the great American songs."-New York Times Book Review
Many of us can sing along with Dorothy when she imagines a place "Over the Rainbow." And we all remember the Depression-era classic "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" But very few can name the man who put the words to these celebrated hallmarks of American music- Yip Harburg. Five hundred songs spanning a fifty-year career bear witness to the brilliance of this until-now obscure figure.
Plunge into this scrupulously documented volume and discover how Harburg, once a poet of light verse, played a major role in the transformation of the Broadway revue into the sophisticated musical of the 1940s and 1950s. With extensive and exclusive interviews and lyrical analysis, the authors capture Harburg's wit, distinctive voice, and creative and collaborative methods.
Inquiry into Harburg's Jewish, New York City roots, apprenticeship in his craft, and involvement in the radical politics of the 1930s- he was blacklisted in the 1950s- puts into context the seemingly irreconcilable skepticism and optimism that contoured this lyrical genius's life and work.
Harold Meyerson is Executive Editor and chief political columnist, L.A. Weekly, and is on the editorial board of Dissent. Ernie Harburg is a social psychologist and epidemiologist at the University of Michigan, coauthor (with Bernard Rosenberg) of The Broadway Musical: Collaboration in Commerce and Art, and Yip Harburg's son.

Portrait of a creative mind and passionate soul.......2000-04-30
Yip Harburg, the prodigiously talented lyricist best known for "Brother Can You Spare a Dime," and "Over the Rainbow", is the subject of this splendid biography. Harburg's gifts were uniquely his, but this book shows us how his (financially but not spiritually) impoverished father cultivate Harburg's talents by taking him regularly to the Yiddish theater on the Lower East Side and reading funny stories to him in the evening. Harburg's insights into the elements of creative writing -- a sense of passion, an eye for paradox, an intelligent plan, etc-- are recounted in loving detail. Whether you read this book for insight into this wonderful man's heart, or his craft, you will be richly rewarded.

In this easy-to-read guide, Grandmaster and openings expert John Emms goes back to basics, studying the essential principles of the Scotch Opening and its numerous variations. Throughout the book there are an abundance of notes, tips, and warnings to guide improving players, while key strategies, ideas, and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but confusing layout.......2005-10-29
This is a decent entry into the "Starting Out" series, with the typical strengths and weaknesses. Initial moves are very well explained, with good care going into the refutations of tricky but "bad" moves. Reading through this section has been helpful, especially for handling crazies playing online blitz chess. And it seems Emms does a good job of going into the main lines and explaining what is going on strategically, about what one has come to expect from this approach to chess books.
I had some difficulty finding certain lines. Each section starts with an overview discussion of the lines, followed by a discussion of how theoretical the line is and the current database statistics. Then come sample games and a closing "points to remember." However, the opening overview often seems to function more like additional sample game than an orienting summary. Thus, if you are in the middle of a sample game, the statistics precede. If you are in the "overview," they follow. But since it is hard to tell what is overview and what is sample game, it becomes a bit of a nuisance to locate these sections.
Also, it is not always clear if a line is discussed in the initial summary or one of the sample games. For example, Emms made the noteworthy suggestion of 5...Bc5 (1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 ed 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 Bc5) as a reply to the Scotch Four Knights in "Play the Open Game as Black". In that book, White's two main replies, 6 Be3 and 6 Nxc6 are clearly given as lines "B1" and "B2."
In "Starting Out: The Scotch Game" the 6 Bd3 line is dealt with exclusively in the initial summary. Then there are two intervening sample games NOT involving 5..Bc5 (10 and 11) before the other main reply, 6 Nxc6 is discussed in game 12. The index wasn't helpful as it cited the summary (pg. 46) for the 6 Ncx6 line, rather than the sample game where this line is discussed in detail (pg. 55).
Side note: there's not much in terms of new info on these lines, compared to the first book, and Kaufman's suggestions and analysis tends to be ignored.
I play Kaufman's suggested line in the "Mieses" variation, and was looking forward to learning if it was holding up in Emms new book. Emms tersely cites the line (without mentioning Kaufman) on page 111 in a footnote, up to move 17, stating ONLY that this "again gives us the typical ending discussed in more detail in the next theoretical section." Thus, to find out more about this type of position, I had to search for the previous reference and the "next theoretical section" which turned out to be on pg. 126. From there I was referred to yet another location, Game 28.
The discussion there, once found, was somewhat helpful, but the position differed from Kaufman's, starting with Black's pieces being in slightly worse locations.
It seems Emms could have troubled himself to deal more explicitly with the Kaufman lines, since "Chess Advantage in Black and White" is having such a large impact.
My last quibble is that while there is much made of Kasparov's contribution to the Scotch, and there are references to his games interspersed, good luck actually trying to find them! There is only one game cited in the index, for a sideline. There is one sub-section titled "7...Be6 and Kasparov's 8 Na4," but the subsection titles are NOT included in the table of contents. There are scads of other references, such as his games with Short and Karpov in the text, but you'll have to hunt for them. Also, quite tellingly, we never hear why Kasparov STOPPED playing the Scotch. A truly objective book would have dealt with this issue.
Thus, while I am happy to own the book, I think Emms to a minor degree, and his publishers (and their poor editorial support) to a large degree are to be faulted.

Anyone who is a fan of the British soap opera Coronation Street must get this book. It includes a complete history of the show from the premier up to the shows in 2000. I have only gotten to see the show sparingly due to it not being broadcast in the states but it is a must have for any corrie fan
