Customer Reviews:
Better than his other books..........2007-09-16
This book is excellent if you want to learn everything about painitng. It does not really cover drawing technique, be forewarned. This is his best book, do not buy "art class" or the "artist's color manual" if you chose to buy this book. Basically, he's complied both books into one.
This book really does cover all materials:
-paper and it's practical uses in concerns to specific mediums
-brushes and their practical uses in concerns to mediums
-Mediums: oil, gouche, egg tempra, watercolor, acrylic, chroma, pastels, charcol, conte crayon, ink (both traditional and modern), etc...
-Mixing media [not to be confused w/color mediums]: linseed oil, turpentine, acrylic mediums (matte, gel, etc.), watercolor mediums, etc...
It does have the same sections in "Art Class" like "where do I start?" etc. It takes you through starting from still life up to portraiture and beyond in this book. It has an additional area of subject matter which is about imagined subject matter.
Overall, it's an excellent reference book, contains good advice on how to go about starting a new medium, and allows for creativity in using mediums by explaining how they work, advantages & disadvantages, starter pallet colors, and permanance.
I would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't claimed to be a drawing technique book...you need a foundation in drawing before attempting this book.
Aptly named Complete ...........2007-04-11
This book covers just about everything, but is more informative on mediums other than oil painting. But it does give helpful tips that I had used previously, without realizing it was a standard technique used by fellow artists, but now I see why I've used them! For somebody that wants to do everything from the ground up, including making their own oil paint, then this is the book to own! Provides more instructional guidance than most other books I've seen/bought. Better artist's examples and more professional results with more advanced instructions than most other publications.
A guide to the many new art materials on the market.......2006-04-27
If you're an artist seeking the basics of how to set up a studio and use professional methods in a range of media, THE NEW ARTIST'S MANUAL: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO PAINTING AND DRAWING MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES is for you. There are so many new materials on the market today that there's an ever-present need for a comprehensive coverage of them: THE NEW ARTIST'S MANUAL provides such depth in surveying paper and paint choices, pros and cons of controlling output under different conditions, experimenting with materials and textures, and much more. An outstanding guide aspiring artists will want to look it - and it's packed with color examples on every page.
Great Book, Lousy Binding.......2006-01-13
This is truly a useful and helpful book in explaining not just techniques, but materials: their pros, cons, and inherent challenges in use. But the binding should be much better. Chronicle Books has a history of putting out decent books with cheap and/or non-durable binding, which does not hold up well with repeated use. The spine cracks easily and then you have to be careful from then on to make certain that sections don't become loose. This is not good for a book designed for repeated reference and study. I would have given the book five stars, but for this serious flaw that Chronicle Books has.

Look at the pictures; Don't bother with the text........2002-10-08
This book has a series of drawing and painting projects in different media done by different artists, step by step. These are immensely helpful to me, as I get a lot out of watching other artists work.
The author, however, makes a pretense of "teaching" things about media and art in this book, but really, adds nothing to the learning process at all. He makes sweeping generalizations about art, without explanation. (e.g., "I tell my students to work in terms of the media." What does that mean??) He criticizes the artists' work without offering any analysis or alternatives, which might be helpful. (e.g., "This works well in terms of the color.") And above all, the arrogance in his critiquing tone is offensive.
On the whole, the author could be removed entirely from this book, and it would be more helpful. The photography is lovely. I like the book--I just don't read the text anymore.
Follow along with the author from pencil to oils.......1999-07-25
After finding this in the library, I want to have this book for myself. As a person getting back into my artwork, I enjoy the author's use of other artists to demonstrate each lesson. Want a concise explanation of working in a variety of media from pencils, pastels, watercolors and oils? Then get this book. Seeing the four or so artists approach to each lesson is a reminder that each one of us has our own style. There isn't one "right" way to depict a landscape, a portrait or a city scene. As the reader turns each page, he/she will find themselves chomping at the bit to get pencil, charcoal or paintbrush in hand.

comprehensive, well written.......2006-07-18
This is by far the most comprehensive guide to drawing and painting I have ever read. I came across it on a sales rack and I'm glad this is the one I chose. Every medium is gone over and properly pictured. Instead of the usual two pages with pencils, paper, and other supplies laid out artfully in a photograph across two pages showing you what you will need for some drawing you practice in the book, every single type of tool is laid next to others of the same type and it goes on for pages and pages. Every example from known artists is in represented in colors the same as the original. The large pages do justice to each. Every technique with its medium is broken down and explained. It shows different techniques for pencil, for example, and how every line from a 2B to a 2H looks on paper while also explaining a pencil's result on different papers. It tells you what works best or is most satisfying on which paper while it also encourages you to break the rules, providing examples of paintings and drawings that did. It introduces you to theories (strangly enough, toward the end of the drawing section) about learning to paint first or learning to draw first and providing background on the arguments. It explains sketchbooks and how they are used to make finished works or to study a subject to draw or paint later. It breaks down types of works (still life, landscape, etc) for painting and for drawing. It explains watercolor, acrylics, and oils in the painting section. Just reading the pages on the supplies prepared me better than anything for my oil painting class. It's great if you're going into classes because you will be prepped on different viewpoints and be able to recognize how your teacher is biased. This book is never annoyingly biased or biased without either some justification or a statement pointing out the opposing view. It never claims to be right, it just states opinion. It's a steal for $10. On top of everything it is easy to read and flows well. The exercises are plentiful and each has it's valuable point in addition letting you know to take hours to complete your work and how to critique yourself. It brings me back to lessons learned in a high school drawing course at Parsons and takes my knowledge and understanding of drawing FAR beyond. My father, an artist, was suprised by my knowledge of mediums and their effects. The book's examples especially make you want to try everything they show you. You could do them hundreds of times in different situations and have many different results. The very first pages contain an impressive exercise for all artists and artists in the making. The book only briefly describes drawing something you imagine, but doing the exercises will probably show you the best ways to draw the lines. That's not something you can teach and it will likely come to you with experience. But this will show you how to get any effects you want and encourages experimentation. It's worth every penny and much more.

Customer Reviews:
Ho-hum, so-so, but mostly OK and very American jokes.......2007-07-28
Jokes generally require context and a good telling. I imagine some of these might have been funny told by the right person in the right way at the right moment, to a fully American audience. On paper I hardly broke a smile. Many of the jokes reflect particularly American obsessions, like with religion, which of course means Christianity (two chapter titles: "Holy Bible Humor" and "Crackin' Up the Congregation"), therapists, overweight, television and sports, and they don't transplant well outside the US. The jokes are not bad, just overall not that brilliant or insightful, or universal in appeal. I got this book hoping to learn more about what makes a good joke, but failed to find much enlightenment here. On the other hand, if you live in the US and want to pass off someone else's one-liners as your own, you may well draw a few chuckles. A few jokes were good for phonetics class, e.g.: When an old man told his friend he had purchased a new hearing aid, his friend asked, "What kind is it?" The old man answered, "About four-thirty." And: As ye smoke, so shall ye reek.
There is a wealth of "clean" humor in the world..........2006-02-09
...and it would take a genuine idiot to have gotten so very little of it between the covers of this book. The contributors upon whom Christing draws for the overwhelming majority of his contents are not so much puerile as pointless, falling flat with a degree of frequency and levels of ghodawfulness that makes even an Andy Rooney quotation seem literate and pithy by comparison.
This is the kind of cement-headedness that gives "clean humor" a bad reputation
A must have!.......2003-11-11
Adam Christing is the Universe incarnating as Comedy. This book is a must have for anyone needing a good laugh. A healthy heart is a smiling heart. Run, don't walk to the counter(checkout) and buy this book NOW!
Great book written by one funny guy!.......2001-11-19
A very enjoyable book written by one of the funniest comedians I know. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for clean comedy at its best!
So funny! And clean!.......2001-01-09
When looking for funny yet CLEAN jokes this is the book for you!
Book Description
In this hilarious follow-up to Comedy Comes Clean, Adam Christing provides an antidote to the raw, raunchy, and just plain rude comedy that's no laughing matter to millions of Americans. The time is right for humor that gets big laughs without resorting to gender bashing, racist quips, obscenity, or any of the other hallmarks of contemporary comedy.

Sure helped me.......2006-03-31
This book was key in my decision to emphasize Omaha Hi-Lo over Hold-em. Since reading it I have had a final table at the Bicycle Casino Mini Series of Poker and a few tournament wins at PokerStars, Absolute and True Poker. What was impressive to me was how he supported his opening hand recommendations with computer simulation, as I had used simulation tools in Scrabble and learned much from them. There may be a weakness in the area of postflop play, but the opening hand section is a big winner. The recommendations on how to play all-high hands were very good too.
poorly written to the extreme.......2005-09-23
Mike cappelletti's book has got to be one of the worst books I've ever read. First of all, he is a very loose player. Play A3 anything? Raise with the 3rd best hand to knock out a 2nd? With a limits most people are playing at people typically will stay in with the 2nd best hand. He also tends to repeat himself quite a bit. How many times do we have to hear a loose game is when 5 or more people see the flop? On top of this he is extremely disorganized. For example he is talking about flop types before preflop play. He also uses too many random charts. Finally his hand examples are terrible. Yes, it's great to know that Hartford is the insurance capital, what the rules are in Tampa, and where you have played, but it's not relevant to o/8. No one cares where you were for each hand example Mike. The bottom line is I cannot recommend this book to anybody without a case of Advil, because your head will be in severe pain after you read this book.Good luck finding advice in this scattered mess. Someone has got to make a good low limit o8 book real soon, because if this is the best out there I'll figure everything out by myself the hard way.
Disappointment.......2005-01-18
This book isnt worth its small price. The book is disorganized to say the least, making it difficult to read. Furthermore, there is little real usable information, especially for those who are new to Omaha 8. Whereas a good author would write a solid chapter about starting hands (for example), the equivalent in this book is 7-8 articles on a subject, apparently culled from Card Player Magazine. This leaves a lot of questions unanswered and topics unaddressed. Though some of the individual articles arent bad, its no way to write a book. Based on what I have heard and the other books I have read by 2+2 publishing, I wish I had bought the Ray Zee book instead. Bottom line: This book might be ok for someone who has played a little bit of omaha and wants to learn a little more, especially playing recreationally, but if youre serious about learning omaha 8 or taking your game to the next level, look elsehwere.
Into the winner's side.......2004-11-09
After one reading, I turned a $40 weekly loss into a $40 gain. This was my first book on Omaha Hi Lo and with the dicipline to follow the guidelines, you can win too. However, you must study another source to learn profitable tournament rules. I do agree with the flaws identifed in earlier reviews: a) somewhat disorganized, b) too much print about "other forms" of poker, and c) leaves some common playing decisions unanswered. But there is enough solid advice to allow you to start getting actual playing time without it costing too much.
If you know starting hands already, this book will help you........2004-04-01
Cappelletti is too loose in his starting hand recommendations in my book. That being said, the rest of the material is very useful. I had already played a great deal of winning O8 before reading this book and I had read Zee's book, but was still able to find some great insightful advice to apply to my game when playing. I especially liked how he got into the differences in play between high flops and low flops and the push and pull hands. This book is very informative and will help your game, just don't play as loose as the author does preflop.
Book Description
Shane Smith, best-selling author, co-author and ghost writer of more than ten poker books, now turns her attention to the latest rage in poker, Omaha high-low poker. In a clear, concise and easy-to-understand style, Smith shows beginning and intermediate Omaha players how to win from the first time they play. Ten quick-reading chapters covers the rules, betting and blind structure, why to play Omaha, the advantages of Omaha over Texas hold'em, starting hands, playing the flop, turn, and river, strategic concepts, tournament tips, and how to avoid bad habits.

A naive viewpoint.......2001-05-25
Regrettably, this book purports to have inside knowledge of the television industry but its own content belies that assertion. Much of the material is self-indulgent, a direct reflection on both the author and members of VQT. As a television insider myself, who has had numerous run-ins with these self-proclaimed arbiters of "quality", their uninformed perspectives turn what should be a book about the strength of the little guy into a skewed narrative by a wanna-be outsider pretending to be an insider. Readers looking for true insights into the world of television are better off with another piece of material.
The Story of Viewers for Quality Television.......2000-12-06
This book tells how the television industry has failed to make quality programming a priority and what viewers may do about this. This book presents true and successful stories of how viewers banded together to demand superior television shows. This is not the story of how groups with political agendas sought to acheive their interests. It shows how viewers may praise quality and make their views known to the television industry so they will keep producing superior shows. The book's descriptions of how a few outraged people made a positive difference is enlightening. These were people upset that excellent shows such as "Cagney and Lacey", "Designing Women", "Seinfeld" and "China Beach" began with such low ratings that they were set for cancellation. It is remarkable to see how just a few people can organize many others to write television network executives and convince them to keep good TV shows. It is very rewarding to see the successes of their efforts, as these shows remained for several successful seasons. This is a great book. People interested in the television industry, case studies of successful organizing, and in reading how one person can make a difference will admire "The Story of Viewers for Quality Television".
