Book Description
A commissioned title, published by Van Gogh Museum/Musée des Arts décoratifs/Mercatorfonds
The grand opening in 1895 of Siegfried Bing's gallery, "L'Art Nouveau," was a major event on the Parisian calendar. For Bing, a renowned dealer in Japanese art and Europe's leading exponent of Japonisme, the beautifully designed furnishings and objects he collectedand in many cases commissionedfulfilled his vision of a new design aesthetic that promoted harmony and elegance. Overnight, Bing's emporium for new art became a symbol for, and the name of, an artistic movement known around the world.
Illuminating Bing's role as a creative entrepreneur and the principal creator of the new style, this book explores his sponsorship of Japanese art; his close ties to such painters as Bonnard, Munch, and Toulouse-Lautrec; and his collaboration with Louis Comfort Tiffany and leading design studios in America and Britain. Bing's work as an interior decorator at the Paris World Fair of 1900 demonstrated the ability of one man to influence the arts worldwide.
The Origins of L'Art Nouveau, which features three hundred gorgeous color illustrations, reveals anew how one visionary individual shaped the tastes of a generation by effectively uniting Asian, European, and American styles, techniques, and sensibilities.

Book Description
Each August, the Iowa State Fairgrounds, home to America's quintessential state fair, becomes 400 acres of sights, sounds, and aromas. More than just a showcase for farm machinery, the fair has one of the world's largest livestock shows, hundreds of competitive events, first-class entertainment, and ever imaginable food-on-a-stick. The first Iowa State Fair, held in 1854 at Fairfield, drew 10,000 visitors, and attendance now tops one million each year. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it has been held at its present location in Des Moines since 1886. In the early 1900s, fairgoers could choose from a large selection of postcards, stick on a penny stamp, and mail them to friends to describe their blue ribbon, an exciting midway ride, or the great entertainment. Over 190 vintage postcards provide glimpses of the fair from the 1890s to the mid-1950s in The Iowa State Fair.

A Book of Memories.......2001-04-26
This book absolutely overflows with memories for anyone who has grown up attending the Iowa State Fair. The pictures that date back from the very first fair to the most recent years show just how the Iowa State Fair has become a pasttime for so many families and groups of people. It's a very heartwarming book for an Iowan to have in their home. Growing up, the Iowa State Fair was my family vacation destination each year, and continues to be. The pictures in the book and stories enrich my many memories and also have enlightened me of the history of the Iowa State Fair as it has grown over the years and turned into an absolute two-week hysteria for all visitors. This book is just wonderful.

Product Description
"Children and adults with ties to Iowa will love touring the Iowa State Fair with Bells, the Knapp family's yellow lab. Bells escapes her family long enough to get a taste of the best state fair in the land. With her dog's-eye view, Knapp captures the essence of our state fair for veteran fairgoers and for those who have not yet discovered this Iowa treasure"... Christie Vilsack, First Lady of Iowa
Customer Reviews:
It captures the energy and excitement of the Iowa State Fair.......2007-05-21
Bells is a yellow lab dog that goes with her family to the Iowa State Fair. She loves the smells, sight and sounds of the fair and her excitement creates some problems. While there, she suddenly realizes that her leash has become undone. Therefore, she is free to explore the grounds by herself. She walks into the livestock barns and talks with the chickens, rabbits, sheep, pigs and cattle. She also slides down the giant slide and sings along with the humans in the competition. Bells also gets her fill of fair food that has been dropped on the ground. She has an ice cream cone, a funnel cake and a corn dog, the combination of which makes her stomach rumble. However, as it gets dark, she starts to get uncertain, as she is beginning to feel lonesome for her family. Fortunately, a member of her family has described her to an animal control officer. The officer encounters Bells and takes her back to her family where she falls asleep and dreams about her adventures.
This book is a playful glimpse into the events of the Iowa State Fair that is designed for children. It is superbly illustrated and Bells is highlighted in each image where she appears. It also captures much of the energy and excitement of the fair, how it reaches back to the past as well as looks to the future.

Book Description
More than 150 years old and still going strong, the Iowa State Fair is an American institution, one that was recently named by author Patricia Schultz as one of the1000 Places to See Before You Die. Once an opportunity for country folk to come to town and to experience the community of fellow farmers, today the fair attracts over one million attendees from urban and suburban locales longing for a taste of real America. The first history of the Iowa State Fair in nearly half a century, Iowa State Fair examines this extraordinary confluence of cows and corn dogs, Midwestern culture and classic Americana.
Iowa State Fair explores the fun of the fair, from the fairytale State Fair of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical to Norma Duffield Lyon’s two-thousand-pound butter sculpture of The Last Supper. Author Thomas Leslie brings the fair to life, recounting its fascinating background, why today it is more popular than ever, and what it holds for the future. Like the fair itself, this book celebrates the state’s agricultural heritage and provides a heartwarming portrait of an event that is, quite literally, as American as apple pie.

Done in an ABC format, each letter has at least two color photos along with a description of what is pictured and where it can be found. There is also a fair trivia section and fair facts. Book Description
Four hundred million years ago, a lowly lungfish hauled itself out of the primordial ooze on flimsy front fins, surveyed the verdant earth, took a gulp of air. . .and started looking for some action.
Not a whole lot has changed since then.
The drive to find a suitable mate has been hardwired into every slippery, slimy, feathery, and furry beast that's ever walked, wriggled, flown, or swum the earth. From limpet to lounge lizard, every life form-low and high-seems constantly and conspicuously on the make. Needless to say, the methods employed in this ceaseless effort to score are not always pleasant to witness. But, in the name of science, one man has made a lifelong study of the natural world's bizarre and often pathetic mating rituals (yes, including those of the naked ape). Cartoonist Gary Larson may well be the world's preeminent paleo-animal-romanticologist. At least, he would be if there really were such a thing.
The cartoons collected in this year's batch of Far Side calendars are populated by amorous ungulates, passionate porcupines, courting cavemen, flirtatious flies, and that most rare and endangered species of all. . .nerds in love.
The quest for love on the Far Side may not leave you with a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye, but it will leave you laughing, and remind you of that timeless truth so often forgotten in the heights of passion. . .love makes fools of us all.

Far Side Calendar.......2006-02-26
I love Gary Larson! He'a a "sick" man. He's creative and funny. I hang a new Farside Calendar in my kitchen every year.
Calendar is up to par.......2006-02-26
I have always enjoyed the Farside series, and I have read almost all their material. If you are the same, I don't recommend this purchase. I bought it b/c I am a real fan, but there is only one joke per month, and they are all ones I have read before, really it serves as just a novelty. I would say buy a calendar series that posts more than one per month, like the desk series. Otherwise it is just really an expensive (in my opinion) novelty. Still hilarious though.
witty.......2006-01-30
This is an excellent calender that will give you a chuckle and pause to think!

Book Description
From Pulitzer Prize-Winning Movie Critic Stephen Hunter Comes A Brilliant, Freewheeling, And Witty Look At The Movies.
Evanston, Illinois, was an idyllic 1950s paradise with stately homes, a beautiful lake, a world-class university, two premier movie houses, and one very seedy movie theater -- the Valencia.
This was the site of Washington Post film critic Stephen Hunter's misspent youth. Instead of going to school, picking up girls, or tossing a football, Hunter could be found sitting in the fifteenth row, right-hand aisle seat of the Valencia, sating himself on one B-list movie after another.
The Valencia had a sticky floor, smelly bathrooms, ancient popcorn, and a screen set in a hideously tacky papier-mache castle wall. It was also the only place in town to see westerns, sci-fi pictures, cops 'n' robbers flicks, slapstick comedy, and Godzilla.
In Now Playing at the Valencia, the author of such bestselling novels as Havana and Pale Horse Coming has compiled his favorite movie reviews written between 1997 and 2003, bringing to the discussion the passionate feelings for cinema he discovered in the '50s, a time when genres were forming, mesmerizing stars played unforgettable characters, and enduring classics were made. While filmmaking has changed tremendously since Hunter first frequented the Valencia, the view from the fifteenth row, and the thrill of down and dirty entertainment, has remained the same.

Customer Reviews:
A Differing Of Opinion About Movies Then & Now........2006-02-13
Not realizing that this paperback about movies was merely a collection of reprints of this author's previously published essays, I was a bit let down. After all, the cover photo promised what it didn't deliver, a modern "movie" genre interpretation. Instead, the reader gets criticism from 1997-2003 of what he saw in Washington, D.C. not at the Valencia at all.
Two years ago, I reviewed HOT SPRINGS and HAVANA, novels about gangsters and vice written by this movie critic -- no doubt straight out of the old dated movies like 'Thunder Road.' He admits that he spent his young years in the Valencia as "education" in Illinois where he traversed the short distance between two (make that three: he forgot the Coronet) movie houses to escape growing up normally. Why he refused to see 'Marjorie Morningstar' was not fully explained, why he even made a point of saying he still would not see this 1958 Natalie Wood/Gene Kelly film is mute. Who cares? I saw it at the best of the three theaters we had downtown, and it turned out to be prophetic for me. Since he didn't see it, he has no idea what I mean. The Valencia looks a lot like our Bijou, which has been through many renovations and undergoing another.
The Riveria is long gone, but I spent many hours in that make-believe cinemascope world as a teenager. Before I discovered the musicals of the Fifties, my fate was the B-westerns at the three seedy places only a block or two from the better places every Saturday. The good thing about movies (not possible today) was timing -- you could buy your ticket and enter halfway through the movie, stay until it got back to where you came in, or sit through until the ending again. No usher would tell you to leave. Times have changed. Now you must leave when the movie is over, while the credits are running if possible.
I saw 'No Escape' starring Ray Liotta on video. In the Fifties, I saw Rory Calhoun and George Nader. I liked 'A Knight's Tale' but wasn't aware that Russell Crowe played Chaucer. He was good in 'A Beautiful Life' but, like Mr. Hunter who had some kind of personal aversion to 'Marjorie Morningstar,' I refused to see him in 'Master & Commander' (personal reasons) -- and quit going to Tom Cruise movies a long time ago, and again like Mr. Hunter, don't plan to ever see him on screen no matter what he plays. All I can figure out for Hunter's prejudice about 'Marjorie Morningstar' must pertain to the story and not the actors.
I've seen a lot of movies these past three years but there's just nothing much to look forward to nowadays. I am wondering if he saw 'A New World' or 'Aristocrats'? But I really don't want to know what he thought about them. To me, they wasted my time and money. In 1953, at the Valencia, "things never happen in reality with the clarity that they do in recollection. Symbolism is rarely apparent when it's happening."
We had a t.v. set to watch the westerns in the early Fifties. Movies were special, especially if the young usher gave a young girl free tickets for upcoming features. The movies used to be fun. Not today, however! Stephen Hunter has also written VIOLENT SCREEN: a CRITIC'S 13 YEARS ON THE FRONT LINES OF MOVIE MAYHEM, his other collection of previously published columns from the 'Washington Post.'
Compulsively readable.......2006-02-08
Movies are a populist art form, and Stephen Hunter is a people's movie reviewer, giving deft and entertaining analysis for about 100 "popcorn" movies within the 330 pages of this book. No Pauline Kael, he evinces more relish than reverence for film. He seems to have as much fun writing about bad movies as about good ones, and he (at least in this volume) barely touches on foreign films, usually the bread and butter of snobbish critics.
Hunter is a published novelist, and he knows how to write a snappy essay. You won't be bored here. He gets to the meat of the matter very quickly, he's very clear in his analysis, and he has no trouble grasping the themes of movies as they speak to the society at large. Hunter has a lot of accumulated knowledge to draw on, and these reviews are very juicy tidbits as a result.
My favorite quote? "Real movies have gone to live on AMC and TCM."
Yes, Hunter is a grizzled baby boomer, and he is properly skeptical of eye-fooling movies built on CGI effects. He mixes in a few reviews of re-released classics ( "High Noon", "Touch of Evil", "Good, Bad, and the Ugly", "Gone With the Wind", "Third Man").
Anybody who aspires to writing reviews of movies on Amazon should read this book, to understand how a really pleasurable essay is put together. It will also whet your appetite and your appreciation for truly edifying moviegoing.

Book Description
This comprehensive annotated bibliography is primarily an update and expansion of a number of reference sources published decades earlier. It represents 30 years of African musicology, starting from 1960. At the same time it constitutes the largest, broadest-based and most unified bibliography of its kind yet to appear. African Music includes 1,700 titles covering African music, embracing all of Africa, its islands, and the Diaspora. Unlike most book-length bibliographies, this reference tool includes an Author Index and a comprehensive and useful 24-page Subject Index. Scattered throughout are illustrations of old Dahomean appliques, and freehand copies of masks and other African artifacts. Entries comprise books, monographs, journals, dissertations, theses, and individual articles. Most entries have annotations of 100 words.

Most of the books I've seen on dice games are short ... pamphlets, really. This is a comprehensive 225-page book that tells you how to play every dice game out there. Explanations are clear and easy to follow. Each entry includes information on strategies and odds and advice on how to win.
The author is extremely knowledgable. For example, he lists all the different names for each game. This is important because so many dice games go under different names in different localities. The index is complete so you can easily look up any game under whatever name it may be known to you.
The game strategy advice is well thought out. It's authoritative and based on statistics but still easy to follow.
This is the first really thorough book on dice games in many years (good older titles are by Scarne and Frey). I recommend it highly to anyone who wants to have some fun and learn a bit too.
Dr. Knizia does it again.......2000-12-13
Reiner Knizia is the most prolific game designer of our day and this is doubly distressing when you consider that each one of them has its own flavor. With this book, he turned his attention away from the board games and card games for which he's famous and instead focused on dice games. How successful was he in making the switch? He was very successful, that's how.
Throughout the book, he presents each game clearly and concisely, follows that presentation with strategy tips and (frequently) his own personal variations.
So if you have any love for math puzzles, probability, or dice games, order a copy of this book today!
