At Art Basel Miami, Visionaire had a tasting bar featuring their newest edition. I had a chance to experience all of the tastes and they do enhance the experience of the related art. Some tastes are appealing and others require a bit of bravery on your part.
You could easily base a small party on this edition and enjoy the taste/art experience with some friends.
Visionaire had another hit with #47.

I love the humor with which this book was written. The book shows "real" ways to fix things, and it shows how to make simple items with DUCT TAPE. It also has a few silly ideas for fun. I gave this book, along with a roll of DUCT TAPE, to a friend for his birthday. (Well, you wouldn't give a toy without a battery! lol)

I was given the page-a-day calendar based on this foolish book as a Christmas gift. It's chock full of the same dribble mentioned in the previous reviews. Here's another fine example: "Refrigerator Repair. Jim's whole refrigerator door fell off, and he made a whole new door out of duct tape!" That's it. No further detail offered up. If it's actually true (hard to imagine) a bit more detail might of actually made the story mildly entertaining. I suppose it's meant to be a joke. The problem of course is quite obvious - it's simply not funny!
To put it quite frankly, this is a book written by idiots for idiots. If you're the type who thought those old Dorf on Golf videos staring Tim Conway were a hoot, then this might be your cup of tea. If Hee Haw and the Red Green Show strike you as high-brow entertainment, then by all means order your copy right now. And what about my calendar? After about a week of this crap I started to feel having it displayed in my office might in fact sully my reputation. It's now at home sitting upside down beside the phone for use as a tear-off note pad.

I was looking for a book that could actually tell me about practical things you could do with Duct Tape. Unfortunately, much of this book is filled with stupid-trying-to-be-funny things. Yes, there are a few good practical ideas, but most sound like they came from bad comedy writers struggling to come up with something funny. As a result, most of the book is filled with really stupid things that are far from funny.
Here are some examples of some pages: "Muzzle your mutt" with a graphic of duct tape around a dogs nose and mouth. Ha ha? Use a wadded up piece of duct tape in place of a silver tooth filling. Ha ha. Duct tape your telephone hand set down so you won't be inclined to answer the phone during the dinner hour when a telemarketer calls? Ha ha.
My 12 year old is funnier than these guys. Now I've wasted my 8 bucks and I'm still looking to find a decent book about duct tape. Don't make the same mistake I made- save your money.

As a 64 year old retired plumber, I'm not one to often admit my feelings. But in this case, I will make an exception- The Jumbo Duct Tape Book made me cry. Tears of relief, tears of joy, tears of longing.
I've fixed quite a few things in my time, and I've probably used more than my fair share of duct tape. (...)

One word can adequately describe this book. FANTASTIC. I was in heaven (Oz) while reading this book. It is the best book ever written about the making of "The Wizard of Oz". Jay Scarfone has out done himself. I have gone back many times to look at many of the rare photo's he has included in this book. I got it for Christmas and it was my favorite gift. This book continues the coverage of the French Defence that was begun by Pedersen in The Main Line French: 3 Nc3. It is essential reading for all those who play the French, and for those who meet it with the popular and flexible Tarrasch Variation.
The Tarrasch Variation provides a stern test for the French Defence, and has always been a favourite of strategically minded players, such as Michael Adams and Anatoly Karpov. By putting his knight on d2, White seeks to give his opponent little scope for counterplay, and in many of the traditional lines ends up with a slight positional advantage that can prove extremely difficult to neutralize. This has led to Black developing various sharper approaches, which complicate the play considerably at the cost of greater risk. Notable among these lines are systems with 3...Nf6 where Black sacrifices material to gain the initiative, and the modern main line 3...c5 4 exd5 Qxd5, where Black keeps his pawn-structure healthy at the cost of some tempi. To get the most out of these lines as either colour, thorough up-to-date knowledge is essential, and this book supplies it in abundance.

The Perry Mason Casebook
This volume contains three Perry Mason "courtroom thrillers" from Erle Stanley Gardner. "The Case of the Sulky Girl" is from 1934 and reflects Gardner's early style and the events of those days. "The Case of the Careless Kitten" is from 1942 and reflects his intermediate style; the war is subtly referenced. "The Case of the Fiery Fingers" is form 1951 and shows his finished style: forensic matters are mentioned. The 'Foreword' pays tribute to an individual who was distinguished for their scientific contributions to crime solving. Gardner said it was very important that the innocent should not be convicted on hunches, as that would allow the guilty to continue committing crimes.
Perry Mason is the lawyer who uses every tactic allowed under the law to fight for his client. His record of exonerating clients can't be matched in the real world. Even Earl Rogers lost a case or two. The entertainment is in the search to uncover the truth that will free Perry's client. Along the way Gardner tells us facts about the laws and other new developments. You can note the method of transportation in the background of the series: taking the 'red line' trolleys; using a car or taxi; flying to cover long distances.
Other details, like a "writ of habeas corpus" are now obsolete due to decisions from Earl Warren's Supreme Court. Prosecutors must provide exculpatory evidence (Brady Rule), and the use of "third degree" methods are now only found in old films (the 1947 film "Boomerang"). Forensic sciences have made great advances. But just as fingerprints could be forged or planted since the 1920s, so too can DNA evidence be planted ("Killing Time" by Freed & Briggs, "Tainting Evidence" by Wearne & Kelly). Human error is always with us.
If all you know about "Perry Mason" is the television series from the 1980s, read the original novels and discover "The World's Greatest Author" whose books outsold his combined competitors. These three stories will do for a start.
"The Case of the Sulky Girl" is about an inheritance due a young woman and the will that could cause her disinheritance. The trustee's death would allow Fran Celane to inherit immediately. When this death occurs, Fran and her fiancee Rob become the prime suspects. Perry Mason investigates to find the facts that exonerate them in a courtroom scene.
"The Case of the Careless Kitten" starts when Helen Kendal receives a phone call from her long-lost Uncle Franklin, who asks her to contact Perry Mason for a mission. Uncle Franklin is seen by the gardener, then disappears again. The gardener is killed in a hit-and-run. Will Della be convicted unless she can prove her innocence? Perry Mason's investigation solves three murders!
"The Case of the Fiery Fingers" begins when a person consults Perry Mason because she fears being accused of a theft. Could this be a cover-up for another crime? With many suspects, how to discover the real poisoner? Perry Mason figures it out.

This is Perry Mason as you've never watched him. The beauty of these mysteries is that you get to follow along as Perry Mason unravels the mystery. This is in stark contrast to the television show, where the unraveling was done in the courtroom and seemed to demand omniscience of Mr. Mason. In this book, which is actually three mysteries in one package, you can actually see whodunit if you're astute and pay careful attention. I was only able to guess one of them right but boy did I feel good about it.

Erle Stanley Gardner published his first novel at age 44 and he still managed to author 82 novels featuring Perry Mason and numerous other works. Gardner was a man with an amazing work ethic who became the most read mystery writer in the world. At age 32, Gardner, a practicing attorney, began writing fiction for the pulps for a minimal amount per word. His output was in the range of a one million words year - a stunning level by any measure. By the time he started writing the Perry Mason novels, he had the right systems and support staff to allow an incredible output.
Part of the reason for Gardner's incredible popularity was that he never added the extensive descriptions that most readers skip in mystery novels. Gardner never wastes words on characterization or the psychological motivation of the villain. Gardner's novels have tight plots, snappy dialog and an abundance of action. Gardner prefers dialogue over description, action over analysis. His novels emphasize physical movement - dashing from one place to another, full-throttle car trips, chartered airplane flights.
Gardner's clients in these works are innocent and fail to reveal the full truth to Perry Mason. Mason, with brilliant and flamboyant courtroom tactics (aided by the extensive resources of Paul Drake's detective agency), proves his client innocent and reveals the identity of the real murderer. The plots have good consistency and plausibility. "The Case of the Lucky Loser" has perhaps the most appealing plot, but the other three works also have story lines that will hold your interest.
These are not thrillers or novels of terror since there is seldom any strong or immediate danger to Mason or his clients. These are plot-driven stories of action. (To the Mason fanatics, I recommend the insightful biography of Gardner, "The Case Of The Real Perry Mason," authored by mystery writer Dorothy B. Hughes.)
Buy and read this volume if you enjoy classic American entertainment. Each of its novels is a quick and fun read. I also recommend and sometimes prefer Gardner's earlier writings, which can be even more energetic.

A Perry Mason Casebook
This volume contains four "Perry Mason" courtroom thrillers written in the 1950s when Erle Stanley Gardner was at the peak of his career. "Perry Mason" is a lawyer who fights for his clients using every tactic permitted under the laws of that time. His client is found innocent (or cleared in the preliminary hearing) when Perry, using his experience, uncovers some unknown or overlooked clue that isn't found until the last chapters. Gardner usually educates the reader into some facet of the law and reminds us of the unreliability of eyewitness evidence and the need for correct interpretation of circumstantial evidence. Sometimes eyewitness evidence is based on the clothes a person is wearing (like that famous example where Earl Rogers got the plaintiff to identify the wrong man). Gardner also introduced the reader to new things like detergents and a ball-point pen.
Many of the details in these stories are now outdated. A "writ of habeas corpus" is no longer necessary given the Supreme Court decisions of the Warren Court. Before a person could be arrested on suspicion, held for days, and worked on until they confessed. [The film "Boomerang" shows an example.] Gardner dedicates his books to the forensic experts who advanced science in convicting the guilty and exonerating the innocent. Gardner and others created "The Court of Last Resort" around 1950 to investigate and free the wrongly convicted. You can find a subtle reference to Dr. Sam Sheppard in one of his novels. "The Case of the Queenly Contestant" notes that a bullet found by a stretcher is proof of nothing. Gardner never put dates in his stories to prevent them from becoming outdated. But the devaluation of the dollar from 1971 onwards made his monetary figures out of date. The 'red line' trolleys in Los Angeles disappeared in the 1950s, along with bright sunshine. These stories provide an unintended snapshot of life in Los Angeles from the 1930s to the 1960s.
"The Case of the Gilded Lily"reminds us of the problem of eyewitness evidence when it can't be corroborated, and of the provenance of fingerprints. Gardner covered the Sir Harry Oakes murder trial.
"The Case of the Daring Decoy" discusses the problem of evidence when the time and contents of the victim's last meal is known. The effect of lividity is discussed. Does the possession of a murder weapon always indicate the murderer?
"The Case of the Fiery Fingers" asks if a person reports a crime could this be a cover-up for another crime? With many suspects, who is the real poisoner?
"The Case of the Lucky Loser" asks if a person is charged with a hit and run, could there be a plot behind this? It is an interesting story about family intrigue over an inheritance.
