"Visual" Says It All!.......2000-07-26
"Visual Illusions in Motion with Moire Screens" is exactly that; a visual exploration of moire effects using simple geometric patterns. Not a scholarly tome about the mechanics of visual perception, but a thoughroughly enjoyable visual experience of the facinating world of moire effects. Sure to stimulate lots of creative uses in the minds of artists and designers, the wealth of patterns and use of different colors makes it a good study tool as well. This book is fun and is sure to appeal to to anyone old enough to turn a page!

Book Description
Treasure one of the greatest forms of pop art in America--the metal lunch box. This is undoubtedly the most comprehensive and colorful compilation of metal lunch boxes ever published. Memories of childhood buddies carried to school each day are beautifully photographed from every angle to display the front, the back and the bands of every box. With sections on care and cleaning, a list of manufacturers, and color photographs of the over 500 boxes themselves, the authors have created a wonderful guide to an entertaining field in pop culture. The book includes foreign boxes and carry-alls as well as a section on advertising and original art.

Good pictures, uninspired text.......2004-09-30
There are indeed some lovely shots of classic lunch kits in this volume. However, I have yet to find a book that approaches the thoroughness, photographic appeal, or wit of the two books by the fellow who started it all, Scott Bruce. If you are a beginning collector, the best thing you can do is get hold of the Bruce books for a comprehensive history and background, and then sign on to www.lunchboxpad.com, a website run by a young collector, for a realistic current price guide.
Great nostalgia and fond memories on every page!.......1998-09-16
If you ever owned, or wanted to own a lunchbox from the 50's through the 80's, this is the book for you. This book provides fond memories of school days, mom's lunches and "what was cool!". Full color photographs of the boxes and thermoses from various angles really make it a must for someone interested in lunchbox collecting or for someone just looking for a fond recollection of a simpler day gone by...

Book Description
In one of the most memorable episodes of Seinfeld ever, Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller) revealed some of the rituals of a Festivus celebration: a bare aluminum pole, a competition involving feats of strength, and of course, the traditional airing of the grievances. Transcending television to become a national phenomenon, thousands of people now celebrate Festivuspartly to thumb their noses at the commercialism of the holiday season, but really because Festivus is downright fun! In this terrific, tongue-in-cheek guide, current and aspiring celebrants will learn: how to make their own Festivus pole (hint: tinsel is forbidden); creative ideas for feats of strength competitions; delicious Festivus recipes; hilarious songs; and so much more.
Customer Reviews:
Just Plain Fun.......2006-12-12
Allen Salkin is the most creative, quirky writer today. He takes Festivus and gives us a super clean, fun holiday that "the rest of us" can enjoy. Particularly if you can't stand the holidays, you can turn to Festivus - it's like group therapy for holiday nay-sayers. But I love Salkin's writing and follow his work closely. I suggest you dig into this fantastic piece of work, and by the way, it's a GREAT stocking stuffer too!!
Not funny.......2006-12-05
Wow, did Allen Salkin get lucky. He must be related to Jerry Stiller or something. From his writing, I'd say that JS's involvement is the only reason he got a book deal.
This book reads like a 9th grade term paper-- and a poor one at that.
What a lame book!
Unfunny and banal.......2006-11-06
Not the worst book I've read this year, but in the bottom 20%, this allegedly humorous tome explores a generally faux holiday. Plotlines from old sitcoms generally don't make for the most inspired book, that's why there's not a book about Lucille Ball running amok in a factory.
I don't begrudge the authors for attempting to jump on the Seinfeld bandwagon, but guys - that bandwagon left the station 4 years ago.
It's a lot of fun........2005-12-30
FESTIVUS: THE HOLIDAY FOR THE REST OF US falls into the realm of the Just Plain Silly. The book has a foreword by Jerry Stiller. Any fan of TV's "Seinfeld" can tell you why that's significant and will instantly recall the "Festivus" episode that introduced the holiday's Festivus Pole, the Feats of Strength and the Airing of Grievances, all of which are covered here.
It seems Festivus can be celebrated at any time of year and, according to the book, it "can be adapted to fit anything." This little book explains the origin of the word in ancient times and brings us up to date with Festivus party planning, favors, food and games. Hosts of Festivus parties share their personal experiences, which can be bizarre and even offensive.
It's a lot of fun.
Festivus...YESSS!.......2005-12-12
My friends and I always talked about having a Festivus party and thought we were the only ones original and subversive enough to attempt it, but as Allen Salkin thoroughly reveals, we were not. Turns out, people all over the country have been celebrating Festivus since the Seinfeld episode aired, adding their own uniquely hilarious twists on the 3 essential elements of the holiday; the pole, the airing of grievances, and the feats of strength! The book is packed with enough accounts and images of Festivus revelers nationwide to turn even the steeliest reader onto its low-budget charms. I received the book as a Secret Santa gift at work (ironic, no?) and am spreading the gospel to my two brothers, who will both find this tight little tome tucked into their respective stockings this holiday season.
And in the spirit of Festivus, Three Grievances:
1. Gypsies don't excite me the way they used to.
2. The girl across from me looks better in her denim mini.
3. My boss's refridgerator smells like a rancid bait shop.
Customer Reviews:
Very extensive and useful (as these things go).......2007-02-18
I wouldn't use this to prepare for a history exam (although it does cover some actual history pretty well), but this book will tell you anything and everything you ever wanted to know about what happened when and where in the Star Trek Universe... at least, up until 1996 franchise time.
Movies and episodes of DS9, Voyager and Enterprise past that year are left out, for obvious reasons. Hopefully, given the lack of tv series/movie activity, they'll take the time to come up with an upgraded version of this book. An interactive CD-ROM would be nice, too.
Worth getting in the meantime, though.
An unique reference to Star Trek.......2000-06-17
A great reference that starts several billion years B.C. to about one thousand A.D. This book has up to Star Trek: Next Generation First Contact, Deep Space Nine Season Four, and Voyager Season Two. One favorite section of mine is the alternate universes section with ALL of the alternate universes up to date. Now I'm waiting for an revised edition...
From the Big Bang to th 123rd century, this has everything!.......1998-07-02
Everything I need to know about Star Trek is in this amazing book. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it when Star Trek Deep Space Nine was ending it's fourth season, and in the book, it goes up to the end of it's fourth season. I had no idea what was happening for two years! Oh well, now I know. Anyway, this book really helped me to understand the world of Star Trek, and the amazing thing is, that everything in this book has followed history so far! Anyway, I reccommend this book to any true Star Trek fans!
Complete but non perfect history of Star Trek saga..........1998-07-01
As it says in the introduction, there are many contradictions and empty spaces in this history, but if there's a need to understand the way Star Trek works, it's an indispensable reference book. Also for writers who want to create between the time lines listed in the book, it is a very well organized tool, and when possible, it reveals the contradictions or problems found by the authors in conjunction with the original writers, so you can fill in the blanks of the history or propose new theories. Well, it's a must have for those REAL Star Trek fans!!!
P.D.: if you want a perfect book, please read the I-Ching...
A fine interpretation of current & Star Trek history........1997-01-24
Reading this book allowed me, a Star Trek fan, not only to answer questions about various topics related to Star Trek history, but to review current events that have made alot of episodes possible

Book Description
Brown Eyed Handsome Man: The Life and Hard Times of Chuck Berry draws on dozens of interviews done by the author himself and voluminous public records to paint a complete picture of this complicated figure. This biography uncovers the real Berry and provides us with a stirring, unvarnished portrait of both the man and the artist.
Berry has long been one of pop music's most enigmatic personalities. Growing up in a middle-class, black neighborhood in St. Louis, his first major hit song, "Maybellene," was an adaptation of a white country song, wedded to a black-influenced beat. Thereafter came a string of brilliant songs celebrating teenage life in the '50s, including "School Day," "Johnny B. Goode," and "Sweet Little Sixteen." Berry's career rise was meteoric; but his fall came equally quickly, when his relations with an underage girl led to his conviction. It was not his first (nor his last) run in with the law. He scored his biggest hit in the early '70s with the comical (and some would saydecidedly lightweight) song "My Ding-a-Ling." The following decades brought hundreds of nights of tours, with little attention from the recording industry.
Bruce Pegg offers the definitive, though not always pretty, portrait of one of the greatest stars of rock and roll, a story that will appeal to all fans of American popular music.
Customer Reviews:
Hail, Hail, Chuck Berry!.......2004-09-14
I've been reading this book for the last few months (it's been my reading material on the train on the weekends hehe) and it's been an enertaining read of the life and hard times of Chuck Berry.
Previous to reading this book, I had only heard Chuck Berry's music and loved it, but did not know much about the man himself.
Bruce Pegg has done a good job of detailing Chuck's life, from the early days in The Ville, his begginings in music, Racism in the USA in the 50's, Chuck's relationship with Chess Records, concerts, all his court appearances (the Mann Act Trial, the Southern Aire Restuarant Video Tape Scandal (which I first heard about on E! News!) plus much more.
There are some great photos in the book which i'm not sure have been seen before.
Pegg also has also rounded up all the important people in Chuck's life and they all give interesting comments.
I haven't read Chuck Berry's offical Autobiography, but upon reading this, i'm sure this gives a much better view into his life.
Can't put this book down!.......2004-02-26
As a long time fan of Chuck Berry, I have tried to read everything I could find about him, from enclyclopedia's to Rolling Stone Magazine. Over the past 20 years, I have tried to piece together the various differing messages about him, from musical genius to "difficult to work with" entertainer. This book puts it all together in an extremely well written and well documented manner. Pegg ties together all of the pieces with a lot of information and insight otherwise unknown, with interviews of principle persons in Chuck's musical and professional life. He is obviously a fan of Chuck's, but the book is very honest with the facts and never sensational.
If you are a fan of Chuck Berry, please do yourself a favor and get this book. You will not be able to stop reading it! I think it also would be helpful for anyone interested in the social/historical milieu of this time period in relationship to black entertainers in general as well.
Chuck Berry Demystified.......2003-03-06
Great Book. Very informative. A thorough body of research was completed in order to have this book published. I thought I knew all about Chuck Berry until I read this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Chuck's. The book is balanced and pulls no punches. No wonder the biography is unauthorized. It contains information that is both provoctive and endearing.
Customer Reviews:
A disappointment..........2002-05-21
I am a huge Chuck Berry fan, but I would have to say that I was very disappointed with this book. As such a brilliant lyricist and poet, I thought for sure that this book would be one of the best autobiographies I would ever read.
About halfway through the book Chuck explains why his ballads aren't as good as his rockers. He said it was because he is unable to place himself in a song, and that he is unable to convey his own emotions in song. That to me sums up this book. (His best songs, he states, are stories of other people.)
As I was reading, it sounded like Chuck just went through is accounting receipts because all he does is talk about the things he bought, and when he bought them, and how much money he made at each show, which are things that accounting records could show. Who would remember the price of their sixth Cadillac?
There are the expected sexual deviations, but even then I felt like I was only getting part of the story. I expected to hear about his songwriting and his early seminal Chess years. Instead I got a braggart going on and on about his wealth and conquests, and how much smarter he is than everyone around him.
I got this book used and at a cheap price. I recommend you do the same.
SOME KIND OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY INDEED.......2001-12-17
You will either come out of this book saying that man is a sex maniac,or you will say to yourself at least he is honest.Whatever option you may choose, the facts remain the same,CHUCK BERRY more than anybody else is the one who helped shaped rock music the way we came to understand it.After all, what is rock but sex put to music. You may beleive that my definition is simplistic, but if you think about it,it is not far from the truth.Still parts of this book(and i do not consider myself a puritan)shocked me,and i am sure some of you will feel the same.Do we really need to know about his sexual prowess that unfortunately proves that the man has an ego bigger than CASANOVA?I still like CHUCK BERRY's music a lot,but CHUCK BERRY the man is a big disapointment. He at least recognizes that MUDDY WATERS is responsible for his recording career at CHESS records ,and that LOUIS JOURDAN was his favorite singer. To resume,i must say that if you choose not to read this book,i won't blame you. There are better autobiographies on the market. (...)
Hail ! Hail ! Rock and Roll........1998-02-06
This book is a fascinating autobiography from Chuck Berry (founder of Rock & Roll). This account covers everything from his invention of the "Duck Walk" to his inspiration for "Johny Be Good". He is not only a wild man on stage but off the stage as well. This book gives the reader a first hand look into his life before and during his famous career. This witty account is interesting and enjoyable for large fans (like myself) or even people who have never heard of him. He could play a guitar just like ringing a bell.........

For all R & R fans.......2005-12-25
(soft-cover edition): This is a well-written book by an author who obviously respects the artist and his music. Some writing on 1950s rockers has been patronizing and inaccurate. Here we have an engaging, balanced analysis of a musical genius and his recordings and live performances. The description of filming Chuck's part in a rock and roll movie is fascinating. It reveals a multi-faceted man, quite protective of his own legend.
Discography is a little light but for 1983 it's fine.
This is a nice complement to the Berry autobiography which was published later in the decade.

Book Description
It’s no exaggeration to say that, with songs like Rock 'n’ Roll Music, Roll Over Beethoven, and Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry invented rock 'n’ roll. However, his career has been overshadowed, and often stalled, by tax evasion, liaisons with an underage prostitute, and jail sentences. Now, John Collis interviews those who have worked with Berry and uncovers the truth about his life back in St. Louis. The result is a clear-eyed portrait of a musical genius who, even in his seventies, is still up on stage singing Sweet Little Sixteen.

Book Description
“The Best Puzzles Are Made by Happy Employees.” So Ad Age describes the credo of Nikoli, the Japanese puzzle company that invented the Sudoku craze and supplies 100% of the puzzles published in Japanese newspapers and magazines. And when they say “made,” they mean literally handmade—unlike the computer-generated puzzles found in other American Sudoku products.
And that’s one of the features that makes THE ORIGINAL SUDOKU BOOK 2— and THE ORIGINAL SUDOKU, published between seasons and already with 115,000 copies in print—unique. The books celebrate the compulsive joy of Sudoku with symmetry, smartness, and elegance. They invite you to match wits with the experts, to step into the 81-cell arena with a puzzle maker who has fiendishly anticipated your next step. Fun without frustration.
Other features? More all-new puzzles—over 300, arranged from “Easy” to “Very Hard.” The same chunky, easy-to-tote format, because once addicted you will be toting it around everywhere. An informative introduction that shows you how to approach and solve the puzzles. Plus an entirely new idea—an unprecedented tutorial on how to create your very own handmade Sudoku puzzles.
The obsession continues.
Customer Reviews:
A nice portable little book of puzzles.......2006-06-28
This is a nice little book. The small size means you can carry it easily with you for a diversion while awaiting a bus, an appointment or friends. It's a little difficult to physically manage because of this fact, however, and the squares are small, so it's difficult if you like to write in the possible solutions for the individual squares as I do. The puzzles are graded into "easy," "medium," "hard," and "very hard," and these assessments are accurate. You can solve any of them with the usual methods you employ for them but will find that the greater the level of difficulty the greater amount of time it'll take to solve them. I find that I tend to select a puzzle level based on how I'm feeling rather than strictly on what level I think I can do. If I'm not feeling like a major challenge, I tend to do easy puzzles. It gives me a sense of satisfaction without frustrating me when I may already be stressed out enough. I choose more challenging puzzles when I'm feeling more up to the demands, but then for me the point of doing these puzzles is to enjoy the experience, not to "prove" anything to anyone.
Worthless Purchase.......2006-03-05
I only give this a 1 because I can't choose a zero.
Whomever wrote the puzzles for this book obviously doesn't know the rules of sudoku:
No number can appear twice within a column, row, or 9-box sub-section (nor located in the same box within the 9-box sub-section). I'm a sudoku fanatic, so I'm very versed in the rules. When I sat down and started working the puzzles, I found myself running up against instances on every puzzle where the same number would have to appear in the upper left hand box of each sub-section twice within the same puzzle (which is a BIG no-no). When this happened 10 times in a row, I went back to the answer page and discovered all of the puzzles had this defect.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK!!
great puzzles, but the small size can be cumbersome.......2005-12-21
The puzzles are top notch and you get 320 for your money, a very good deal. As the book is so thick, the page size is a bit small, making the left hand puzzles at the beginning of the book (and vice versa for the right hand pages at the back of the book) difficult to keep flat. The paper is tough enough to withstand multiple erasings and there is only minimal bleed through from puzzles on reverse page faces. It is up to you to decide whether or not these "hand-made" puzzles are better than computer generated. I have never played a computer generated puzzle, so I can't comment.
