Excellent book for arts infusion and benefits .......2005-07-29
I bought this book on a lark after typing in "arts integration" here at Amazon (I'm a music teacher who now presents workshops on the subject). I was absolutely delighted with this purpose-driven book of arts-infused reading comprehension strategies, a big issue with most school districts.
My desire is to make my colleagues feel a little less burdened by the constant demand for better scores, higher numbers, etc., and to get back to the joy of learning, which the arts certainly promote.
The book includes actual examples of students' work in the book and the book is clearly divided into sections such as inference, synthesis and activating schema (scaffolding?).
Mantione & Smead, like most arts integration authors, lean toward primary and grade school models, but it's still a great start. Maybe I'll be the one to write a book on inner-city teens, who sorely need the arts as avenue for improved learning, expression, life.

I purchased this book as a gift for a friend, and it was exactly what I was looking for! This book offers solutions to travel nightmares, very handy for an inexperienced traveler.
A Series of Worst-Case Events.......2006-01-20
Two things you should know when considering whether to buy this book:
1. When they say worst-case scenario, they really mean worst-case scenario. It advertises advice on surviving volcanic eruption, not on losing your travelers' checks.
2. It is humor. On page 48, they advise "earplugs are useful when you want to sleep in a battle zone" which leads into the next section "How To Survive A Hostage Situation." This section, by the way is a kind of awkward read post-9/11 (as near as I can tell, the book has not been revised since before that event or at all). They also recommend that you wave for help when stuck inside the trunk of a car, so there you go.
If you are looking for humor, I recommend it. If you are looking for something more serious in the light of New York, Madrid, London, Thailand/India/Sri Lanka, New Orleans, etc. in the past five years, you will need to look elsewhere or you will be disappointed.
Hilarious and handy.......2005-01-03
This book was so funny! My friend and i have nothing better to do, so we went and sat there and read all of the worst case scenario book, and i must say, this one was bomb! i loved the emergency phrases in the back, such as: Why is the water brown/green/yellow?
I actually learned something from this book too. The section on how to stop a thief and how to survive a mugging are good for anyone to learn, not just travelers!

Light reading for the adventurous tourist.......2004-10-26
This book, like the others in the series, is tongue in cheek. Some of the advice and scenarios are practical but others are completely in fun. My favourite was the advice of what to do if you are threatened with alien abduction. You should not let your mind give in to them. In other words, stop hallucinating and you will be just fine. :)
At the same time some of the advice is practical and could be useful to everyone, not just travellers. For example it gives advice on what to do if your car ends up hanging over the edge of a cliff. While not an everyday occurrence it almost happened to a friend of mine during a snowstorm on the highway.
Not up to past standards.......2004-08-25
The "Worst Case Scenario" people are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Surviving an airplane crash and building a snow shelter can be important! But encountering aliens, while offering both an extreme scenario and a touch of humor, isn't specifically travel-related. The same with a plummeting elevator, or losing someone who's tailing you. On the other hand, they've omitted some important items, like getting arrested in a foreign country, or losing your passport. This series is losing steam.

Five of the best books I own!.......2002-12-04
The Worst-Case Scenario books by Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht have gone way beyond cult status, and the set of all five is the perfect thing to get if you want an entertaining read. The ultimate coffee table books, not one person can pick one up without finding something out they didn't desparately need to know until just now.
After reading these books, one can manuever on top of a train, jump from a building into a dumpster, survive a riot, escape a runaway parade balloon, hotwire a car, get someone unstuck from a chimney, determine whether your date is an axe-murderer, and hundreds of other things.
Great for an armchair quarterback or basically anyone else who has the slightest interest in nifty things, this collection is probably the best thing I can recommend on Amazon.com. Just put them on a coffee table and watch how quickly people pick one up, and how slowly they set it back down.
If all five books is too much of a commitment for you; however, try the original (yellow) or the "Dating and Sex" (black) book. I guarantee you will love them!

Bob Burns is the foremost collector of sci-fi and horror memorabilia, and it's all kept in his basement. This book is a guided tour through Bob's remarkable collection of props, costumes and other items that Bob has collected for nearly 50 years with anecdotal stories by Bob about how he acquired the items, as well as Bob's life long experiences both in front of and behind the cameras of Hollywood.
There's a pair of Frankenstein's boots worn by Glenn Steele, the Captain America costume worn by Dick Purcell in the Captain America serial, costumes from Flash Gordon...There's models of the rockets from George Pal's "Destination Moon" and a replica of The Time Machine. Latex props from Alien and The Terminator..space helmets and laster blasters from 50's era TV and films. A marvelous collection and the object of envy of baby boomers everywhere.
in addition we'll learn of Bob's background as a makeup artist and the films he worked on as well as his short-lived career as a horror magazine publisher who went head-to-head with Famous Monsters of Filmland. We'll see Bob's long career playing a gorilla in appearances on shows like The Lucy Show as well as the short-lived Saturday morning show Ghostbusters.
From there Bob takes us through the many years of putting on some of the most elaborate Halloween displays and shows to ever show up in suburban America with help from guys who would go onto become some of the most famous special effects gurus in Hollywood like Dennis Muren.
This is a fun and utterly engrossing travel through time as we tour Bob's collection and see items that he saved from the garbage heap. Highly recommended!

This book is a lot of fun. Bob Burns is one of the greatest collectors of movie memorablia. After reading this book, I've decided I want to hang out in his basement.
The anecdotes make this a fun read and the pictures are fantastic.

It Came From Bob's Basement is one of those books that I look at over and over again. Not only are the images terrific, but the writing is exceptional. Apart from Bob Burns' incomparable passion for these icons of science fiction culture, what really emerges for me is a very accurate portrayal of Mr. Burns' big heart and generosity. Bob's intention was never to make money from his collection but rather to be a museum director and caretaker of priceless relics that millions of people have seen in many of the world's greatest films. Now, with the publication of this book, everyone has an opportunity to see these items first hand and I would highly recommend they do so!

This is a man who shows his love of film in every word of this book. Lots of photos ( still I want more shots ) of props that you would never think would have ever been saved. Lots of good stories and things you never knew about many of the films. Great read, I just sat down and didn't stop until the end.
Why doesn't some one with some Big Hollywood bucks open a place where the props and and seen and perserved.
Come on George and Steven... special effects and movies made you millions give something back and perserve the past.
Bob Burns Collector of Dreams.......2001-02-11
Bob Burns has written a wonderful little book titled, "It Came From Bob's Basement." This book is chronicle of a moment in time that has long since passed from our lives, but we can always take a moment to revisit. Bob grew up in the 1930's when many things, which we now take for granted, were in their infancy. Before video games, and a color television in every home, a child was more innocent; their imaginations were fueled more by a sense of wonder in discovering the world around them.
We seem to lose that innocence much earlier every generation, Bob has never lost it. He chronicles his awe as he discovers movies such as King Kong, which so captured his imagination that it set a path for his life's destiny, and became part of a lifelong fascination with science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Bob has worn many hats in his life, follow him as he changes from Major Mars, a live matinee host for children, to Bob Burns the contributor to many memorable horror movies of the 50's and 60's. Bob's fascination with movies has led him to many strange roads, and contributed to his ever-growing list of friends, some of whom are very well known. Probably the ultimate bridge tip book.......2005-09-27
From the Rule of 20 to the right and wrong way to use the Big Double, Marty Bergen has set the standard for modern bridge tip books. His engaging storytelling style and insightful teaching provide clarification to readers of all levels, although the book is clearly aimed at the novice to intermediate crowd.
A great re-entry to the book arena by Marty. I just miss the mad scientist who wrote the "Better Bidding with Bergen" books!
Entertaining and helpful.......2003-09-24
Marty Bergen's "Points Schmoints" is a fun-to-read book that offers a dozen tips on how people who've already mastered the basics of bidding and play can improve their game. The Law of Total Tricks, in particular, is extremely useful for duplicate games.
While Bergen writes with wit and flair that keep this book engaging, I wish he'd done a bit less story-telling and provided a bit more depth of content instead. For the price I feel his book is a bit thin, and that's the one thing that keeps me from rating it 5 stars.

This is the perfect book for players who more-or-less have the basics in place. This will correct your misconceptions and raise your game a couple of levels. The first half of the book is all about bidding, and rather than just talking about basic bidding, tells you what to do in those tough borderline situations. A great example is his "Rule of 20", used to decide whether to open the bidding or not: If the sum of your HCP and the number of cards in your two longest suits is 20 or more, open with your normal 1-level bid; else pass. Very effective, and better than counting short-points or long-points, since this takes into account the ENTIRE distribution.
The second half of the book is about declarer play and defence, and is equally good. What distinguishes this book from the rest is that the author doesn't waste space on the basics, and instead concentrates on the intermediate-to-advanced stuff.

None of his other books come close to the standard set by this book for content or organization, though "More Points Schmoints" tries hard.

Reagan: The Man and His Presidency, a sympathetic oral history of the Republican president who revitalized American conservatism, follows a pair of similar books by the Strobers on JFK and Nixon. For this volume, the authors interviewed 108 political insiders and others who knew their subject well, with everybody's insider perspective--from George Bush and Jordan's King Hussein down to the family astrologer, Joan Quigley--taken at face value. While the book does offer important insights on the 40th president's character and management style, and juicy first-person accounts such as Gerald Ford's take on the failed negotiations to have him join Reagan's ticket as a virtual "co-president," it is by no means a comprehensive history of the Reagan administration. In fact, this probably isn't the first volume on Reagan to own or read--for that, check out Dutch by Edmund Morris or Ronald Reagan by Dinesh D'Souza--but it certainly provides a nice addition to the libraries of Reagan devotees. --John J. Do you REALLY want to know about the Reagan presidency? Then read this book. No fluff, no guff. Just verbatim testimonials from dozens of prominent figures of the Reagan era. Ignore the imbecilic prattle of the anti-Reagan Marxists who despised the man. One helpful hint: take some notes. The authors and editors give the job titles of the interviewee only when they are first introduced. Later in the book it is impossible to remember everones's job titles, and you'll be turning back to earlier text. This is the only reason I docked it a star.

This lopsided book won't change the minds of most Americans who agree that ronald reagan was one of the decietful presidents this century. He makes Nixon and Clinton look GOOD. He subverted the Constitution and lied to both Congress and the American People over the Iran Contra scandal--one of the most embarassing and shameful incidents in American History.

Outstanding review of the President by those who knew him best. Detailed interviews with members of the cabinet, advisors and family members. The interviews are broken down into categories (such as Alexander Haig, Domestic policy, etc.) and it is fascinating to hear what those closest to the situation had to say. For Reagan fans, it will confirm his position as the greatest leader of the 20th Century (although it is not biased in any way).
