Book Description
Set your inhibitions aside. Completely nutty yet effective, 97 WAYS TO MAKE A BABY LAUGH, now with over 702,000 copies in print, is the perfect, charming gift book for parents who want to tickle their baby's funnybone, and their own. It's like a book of parlor tricks, except that the person who's being entertained is six months old and often as impassive as stone. Adult readers, especially those harried by the day-to-day details of caring for an infant, will rediscover their own sense of the absurd and delight in the suggestions and illustrations.
Like countless parents before him, Jack Moore was frustrated trying to amuse his baby son, Brick. Then he set aside his inhibitions and discovered the sheer family pleasure of playing "Live Jack-in-the-Box" (put Dad in a large cardboard box, then have the family sing the familiar tune-at "pop," Dad jumps out). "Three Card Monte for Babies" (using plastic cups and a lemon). The "One Torso, Two Heads" trick (Mom and Dad stand back to back and drape a sheet over their shoulders). "Mr. Ed Impression Contest." "The Human Carousel." "Who's Behind the Door?" And an updated "Stinky Feet Act."
Customer Reviews:
A great baby shower gift!.......2004-01-21
Clever and funny, this tongue-in-cheek book is for "grown-ups" who love babies and aren't afraid to act like one. A perfect gift for new parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings of babies. And did I mention "witty"? My favorite is #66, which I would have named "The Sisyphus." These "97 ways" actually work--or I know alot of silly babies. Don't forget to leave a copy around for the babysitter.
Great Daddy Shower Gift.......2001-11-27
I think this is a cute little book. Only fault is it lacks alot of substance, but its silly with great little photos. My husband and I are having our first baby Spring 2002. Some friends of mine are throwing a Daddy Shower for my husband as a gag party, and to make him feel like he is part of it all. I think for $7~or less it's a great little gift idea.
Funny reading - lousy ideas.......2001-09-27
This book is a great read if you are just looking for a laugh (for yourself, not your baby.)
Only a handful of the ideas are feasible. Unless your husband really wants to wear a giant diaper, or you want grandma to go in a huge box and be a giant jack-in-the box. The ideas are cute and funny, but few are practical. Laughing with your child is a wonderful thing, and enjoying your baby is important, but these ideas are not well-thought out and a waste of your time. Finger plays and tickling sessions will elicit more genuine laugther than throwing random objects out of your window from the 2nd floor, while baby looks out the 1st floor window!
A poor choice at any price!
How fun & creative!.......2000-12-19
This book would make a lovely gift for a new parent. It offers fun & imaginative ways to make your little one laugh. It also has a few old standbys! I liked the tongue in cheek humor offered by the author with several suggestions :) Sure to bring a smile & a chuckle to the parent while eliciting giggles & laughs from the little ones. This author definitely has a great sense of humor, & a lot of energy for his little one!
Shameful!.......2000-10-06
I thought that this book would be a wonderful present for my best friends shower, since I am a mom too! I found some very sinister things in this book. Making faces? That involves making a mask of sorts, and that is specifically forbidden by many respected religious doctrines. All God-fearing parents should approach this book with great caution! Think of both your and their soul!

Book Description
In the twenty years preceding the First World War, cinema rapidly developed from a fairground curiosity into a major industry and social institution, a source of information and entertainment for millions of people. Only recently have film scholars and historians begun to study these early years of cinema in their own right and not simply as first steps towards the classical narrative cinema we now associate with Hollywood.
The essays in this collection trace the fascinating history of how the cinema developed its forms of storytelling and representation and how it evolved into a complex industry with Hollywood rapidly acquiring a dominant role. These issues can be seen to arise from new readings of the so-called pioneers--Meliés, Lumière, Porter, and Griffith--while also suggesting new perspectives on major European filmmakers of the 1910s and 20s.
Editor Thomas Elsaesser complements the contributions from leading British, American, and European scholars with introductory essays of his own that provide a comprehensive overview of the field. The volume is the most authoritative survey to date of a key area of contemporary film research, invaluable to historians as well as to students of cinema.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent resource for anyone interested in silent films.......1999-08-22
This is an incredibly informative and interesting collection of essays exploring the beginnings of cinema from a mixture of perspectives. While attention is paid to social history and the material conditions of early films, apparatus and venues, most of these essays also do a fine job of theorizing cinematic narrative. Often, books on silent film offer only a contextul and historical analysis, often because critics think of the early cinema as "primitive." These essays take these early films on their own terms and read them suggestively. As a result, this volume allows film scholars and anyone interested in early film to see how the lessons and experiments of silents not only contributed to but often predicted and surpassed the "classical" cinema's traditional notion of what cinematic narrative could and should be.
Book Description
"Occasionally, there comes along a popular science book that both scientists and non-scientist can read with pleasure and profit, and this is one."The New Yorker
Devoted to sharing their own delight and awe before the fundamental mysteries of the cosmos, Frank Wilczek (winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics) and science writer Betsy Devine also have a serious purpose: to reveal to the lay reader how a heightened perception can respond to timeless themes of the physical universe. For example, they show that even the most exotic theories always confirm that physical laws are precisely the same throughout the universe, and they explain how we have learned that the most massive molten stars and the tinest frozen particles are in physical harmony. In their descriptions of the workings of the half-known universe, Wilczek and Devine bring all of us face to face with the beauty of eternal order and the inevitability of rational ends and beginnings.

A good time will be had by all........2005-02-02
Longing for the Harmonies is subtitled "Themes and variations from modern physics". I would have added "and beyond": I doubt there's another popularization of quantum mechanics and particle physics that also touches upon Keats, ancient Babylon and child psychology, to name but a few.
The book actually strikes me as two intertwined books. First, there are the "preludes" which are thought-provoking excursions here, there and everywhere. At times they seem quite off the wall and impossibly far from fundamental physics, but they always whet the appetite for what's to come, a bit like (to use the musical analogy which is the book's main metaphor) a solo which seems out of place until it ties back into the main body of the song.
Second, the "main body" of the book, although also laden with references and analogies from far and wide, exposes and (in so far as is possible!) demystifies quantum mechanics and fundamental physics in all its glory, both the large (cosmology and astrophysics) and the small (atoms and subatomic particles). The two domains, of course, are intimately related: the early Universe, devoid of complicated structures such as planets, stars and human beings, was a soup of elementary particles, and its evolution (and, perhaps, birth) was dictated by rules of the game established by particle physics.
A review wouldn't be a review without at least a minor complaint; not an easy task with this book, but here is mine: the table of contents strikes me as a bit too cryptic. Chapter headings such as "Inevitability" or "Radical uniformity in microcosm" do little to explain what the chapter is about; more straightforward headings would probably help guide the reader through the grand tour they are on and help them get a sense of perspective of how the different subject inter-relate. Fortunately, the remaining three hundred-odd pages of the book are packed with enjoyable reading.
Among the many, many gems in the book are a musical analogy of why particle physics doesn't obviate all of macroscopic physics, the "lave" concept (a combination of "lump" and "wave" descrbing the dual nature of matter), and a personal account of the discovery of a cornerstone of the interaction between quarks and gluons known as asymptotic freedom (for which one of the authors was co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in physics last year). But open the book just about anywhere and it's a good bet that you will find a fascinating take on something -- whether from particle physics or beyond. Give it a whirl!
always one of my favorites.......2005-01-22
This has long been one of my favorite expositions on the nature of science, written by scientists. Wilczek and Devine present one of the most creative and playful discussions of physics, from the basic to the forefront that I have seen. I am very happy that this book has been re-released because now many more people will have an opportunity to share the joy I had reading it.
Long for Harmony No More!.......2005-01-19
Longing for the Harmonies: That's what physicists do. This book, in fact, pretty much sums up what physics is, at heart, about: a search for connection and clarity, a series of variations on themes, the interplay of tension and release, mystery and discovery--the universe's own fugue. Frank Wilczek-who recently won the Nobel prize for puzzling out how quarks glom together-and Betsy Wilczek-writer, blogger, math whiz--have composed an entrancing work that captures both the substance and process of understanding.
_Longing for the Harmonies_ is a very good book........2000-12-30
_Longing for the Harmonies_ presents the highlights of physics in a way that is accessible to most readers. It is a graceful book that pleases as it informs. One of the authors, Frank Wilczek, is a leading physicist.
a different perspective.......2000-04-29
This book, while well-written and organized, can be slightly frustrating. Those readers looking for a straight-forward, purely factual explanation of quantum physics should go elsewhere. This text, which I read for a 100-level physics class, flips between flowing metaphors and Feynman diagrams, while trying to explain the concepts behind quantum physics. In other words, there is thankfully no math. The authors do tend to get slightly overconfident in their theories at times, putting more authority behind their pet ideas than may be warranted. Still, overall it's a good overview of quantum physics for those who want to understand it conceptually.
Book Description
Ridley's book is both an introduction to philosophy of music generally and an introduction to an individual, pungently flavoured philosophy of music. His arguments are lively and provocative, and to boot, he writes like a dream. This is the kind of book that reminds one why philosophy matters, especially as applied to the things we love most.-Jerrold Levinson, professor of philosophy, University of Maryland
This outstanding book provides new and distinctive approaches to the five central topics of musical aesthetics: understanding, representation, expression, performance and profundity. The central theme is the failure of the orthodox view-that pieces of music are more or less self-contained structures of sound-accounts for important features of our musical experience, and explains why music should matter to us.
Each chapter is built around a single musical work. Readers are introduced to the main positions in the philosophy of music. Ridley exposes and corrects the failure of the orthodox view and proposes fresh solutions. Additionally, Ridley offers innovative approaches to the philosophy of song, musical ontology, and to questions about the value of music. P>Features
* Broad, accessible introductory overview to philosophy of music
* Original and stimulating insights
Book Description
Few players have left a more indelible mark upon a sport than the late Willie Mosconi. For nearly half a century, Mosconi dominated the game of pocket billiards, winning the coveted World Title fifteen times from 1940 to 1957 and pocketing a string of records along the way. His unparalled skill with the cue humbled opponents and astounded audiences worldwide.
In this timeless classic, Mosconi shares his expert advice on every facet of the game, from the essential fundamentals to more complex trick shots. Detailed diagrams and step-by-step illustrations guide beginners and advanced players alike through such basics as the selection of the cue; the proper grip, stance, and bridge; the stroke and follow-through; cueing the ball; and hitting the object ball. Players of any level can improve their game by following Mosconi's invaluable instruction on the finer points of combination and kiss shots, the proper application of English, and the speed of stroke. A section of practice drills encourages players to develop their skills toward mastery.
Mosconi was also renowned for making seemingly impossible shots with confidence and ease. Through diagrammed explanations, he reveals the secrets behind such shots as the "Machine Gun," the "Football Shot," the "Handkerchief Shot," "Jump the Rack," the "Railroad Shot," and more. With a bit of practice and patience, any player can play like the indomitable Willie Mosconi.
Includes a glossary of terms and official rules
Customer Reviews:
Good book for beginner, not much info for moderat to expert.......2002-05-21
The book is well written and easy to read. The instruction is well presented so the novice can uderstand and with practice will be able to advance in the game. For the intermediate on up player this book has little to offer except to learn a little about Willie which could be better spent reading a book that is devoted to Willie and not a sideline intro. depending on your skill level it is either good and well worth your time or is not worth reading. Even though i did not gain much useful information i still enjoyed the book.
He is the master after all........2001-07-17
This book really does not have a lot of content or instruction. If you really want to learn more about pool you'll find more in other books by less prominent pool players (ie, Robert Byrne, Phil Capelle), but he does make some very good points about the fundamentals. However, above all other things, Willie Mosconi is the greatest pool player to have ever lived and any serious pool player should read his book out of respect if nothing else.
Words and pictures from the Master of pocket billiards.......2000-04-12
I originally purchased this book when it was fresh off the press (at a cover price of $2.50).
Over the years, my pool game has had its ups and downs, but when I get into a 'slump', I get out "Winning Pocket Billiards" and go through the entire book as if for the first time. My game seems to undergo an immediate improvement!
I highly recommend this book for both beginners and "those that THINK they know it all"!
A must read.......1999-02-08
Mosconi's Winning pocket billiards with a copyright date of 1965 might seem a bit dated... but it's a must read. It's advice from the master! It has pictures of Mosconi hitting various shots and graphics that, while dated, are very easily understood. The graphics are done with tape on the felt... indicating direction of the object ball and the cue ball.
I have recently gotten back into the game and can sink a few... but I learned new things in this book. Definately worth it!!
Customer Reviews:
The best book to learn by.......1999-12-20
Willie Mosconi, of course, was the greatest pool player of all time. He won 15 world titles in 17 years, hold the high-run record, and when 7 years old almost defeated the then legendary Ralph Greenleaf. But could Willie teach all that knowledge and experience to mere mortals like us?
The answer is "Yes." He explains with clear pictires all the fundamentals about stance, grip, and aim. He also gives good advice about speed of stroke and english. He provides initial strategic advice on how to play position and shot selection. He also has a nice selection of makeable trick shots at the end. My only criticism is the discussion of bank shots, which can only be described as flat out wrong. I know that he knew how to shoot them, but the description and diagram he uses are not how its done. For that, I am ashamed to say, I had to consult "Minnesota" nee "New York" Fats's book.
Other, more advanced books (such as those by Robert Byrne) have built on the solid information Willie provides. But I know of no other book I would recommend so highly as this one for the beginning player.
