Book Description
Exploring the nature of the aesthetic medium has been at the heart of much of modern art. For exponents of high modernism, the essence of each medium lay inherently in its own particular material properties. Accordingly, the import of painting was its "flatness," as exemplified by the monochrome canvas. But some artists rejected this description as inadequate. Citing the examples of film, television, and video, they understood and articulated the medium as a complex structure of technical supports and layered conventions distinct from physical properties. Here, Rosalind Krauss positions the work of Marcel Broodthaers within this alternative narrative. Referring to the Belgian artist's films, books, graphic design, and museum "fictions," she presents Broodthaers as standing at, and thus standing for, the "complex" of the self-differing medium.

Book Description
Originally released in 1985, Gospel Birds is a collection of nine classic and very funny monologues from the early years of A Prairie Home Companion. In addition to the title story (about Irma and Ernie Lundeen's traveling flock of acrobatic, bible-reciting birds). Gospel Birds is Garrison Keillor at his very best--endearing insights, gentle humor and warm affection for the human foibles we all share.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Stories told by America's Storyteller.......2004-03-29
Garrison Keillor is to the spoken story what Mark Twain was to the written - a kind and intelligent sense of humor mixed in with a wickedly insightful knowledge of human nature. His monologues, the "News from Lake Wobegon", have always been the centerpiece of PBS's wildly successful Prairie Home Companion, and I have found none of his stories to be superior to those contained within this collection.
Pastor Inqvist's Trip to Orlando is worth the price of these cassettes alone with the story of the humble Lutheron Minister and his desire to please his Church Deacons and Mrs. Inqvist at the same time. The Gospel Birds is another "church" story, but you'd be wrong if you came to a listen thinking that Mr. Keillor is simply a "holy roller" trying to pound his version of "the gospel" into anyone.
His stories are about what makes us human - our nobleness and our failings - and his storytelling is so skillful, he allows us to hear that our shortcomings are as important in who we are as our triumphs.
The height of the monologue.......2002-05-08
This is a fine collection of monologues from the period during which Keillor was most popular, and it also has gorgeous guitar links provided by Chet Atkins, whose trademark arpeggios are beautifully rendered on an acoustic guitar with a rich, mellow sound. I was moved by these recordings to buy several Chet Atkins CDs. "Meeting Donny Hart at the Bus Stop," "Pastor Inqvist's Trip to Orlando," and "Mammoth Concert Tickets" contain all of the elements that earned Keillor his loyal following -- an affection for the Minnesota region, fallible human characters, hope and compassion, all told with a twinkling sense of humor.
Garrison's Best-Ever recording!.......2002-02-08
I have virtually all of Keillor's Lake Woebegon works, and this is his finest! "On Meeting Donny Hart" is perhaps the finest tragi-comedy of them all! You'll bust a gut listening to Mazumbo, Gospel Birds, Pastor Ingquist's Trip to Orlando, Mammoth Concert, and Babe Ruth Visits Lake Woebegon-- the whole set is superb. I can't say enough good about this excellent product.
The Best of Garrison Keillor.......2001-03-29
This is one of 2 collections of monologues (the other being "Fall") that (to me) comprise the absolute best of Garrison Keillor's recorded Lake Wobegon stories. Some of the later collections have a more uneven feel, but "Gospel Birds" and "Fall" don't have a weak moment on them. The stories range from hilarious to touching to heartbreaking, and many times are all three at once. You'll laugh at these whacko Minnesota characters, but you'll also see yourself in them, and feel along with them as well. This is time well spent.
Good, Wholesome, Family Entertainment.......2000-06-10
I was looking for humor that wasn't bawdy or raucous and this tape more than delighted: I also found a great American storyteller. I barely knew the name having seen a taping of Garrison Kiellor's radio show on TV once; so I wasn't familiar with the style or content. What makes his wide appeal is his vocal ability to get you on the edge of your seat, and his remarkable talent for impersonating any age or gender, and any relationship. A couple of the stories are merely poignant; with the majority being situation comedy of everyday life. My favorites: Pastor Inkfest's Trip to Orlando, The Beeler Boy, and The Fishing Dog.

Book Description
Since Socrates and his circle first tried to frame the Just City in words, discussion of a perfect communal life--a life of justice, reflection, and mutual respect--has had to come to terms with the distance between that idea and reality. Measuring this distance step by practical step is the philosophical project that Stanley Cavell has pursued on his exploratory path. Situated at the intersection of two of his longstanding interests--Emersonian philosophy and the Hollywood comedy of remarriage--Cavell's new work marks a significant advance in this project. The book--which presents a course of lectures Cavell presented several times toward the end of his teaching career at Harvard--links masterpieces of moral philosophy and classic Hollywood comedies to fashion a new way of looking at our lives and learning to live with ourselves.
This book offers philosophy in the key of life. Beginning with a rereading of Emerson's "Self-Reliance," Cavell traces the idea of perfectionism through works by Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Kant, Mill, Nietzsche, and Rawls, and by such artists as Henry James, George Bernard Shaw, and Shakespeare. Cities of Words shows that this ever-evolving idea, brought to dramatic life in movies such as It Happened One Night, The Awful Truth, The Philadelphia Story, and The Lady Eve, has the power to reorient the perception of Western philosophy.

Perfectionism--Love it or Live it.......2004-08-28
No one should mistake City of Words for a book about film, though it comments on a number of movies. Nor is it exactly a book on moral philosophy, if you're looking for thorough accounts of differing views of the good or the right. Those who know Cavell's other writings will find familiar ground here, as he keeps returning to old favorites: Emerson, of course, screwball comedy, Shakespeare and melodrama (new to me are some thoughts on Eric Rohmer, Henry James and Max Ophuls).
What the book does deliver is a set of virtuoso variations on the "register of the moral life" that Cavell calls "perfectionism"--the sense of disappointment with the world as it is and the (in principle endless) aspiration to a transformed, better, more desirable state. He finds perfectionist themes all over the philosophical tradition, but he's more interested in the philosophical life than the tradition. For Cavell, the pleasure of the films lies in the way they embody--and invite, or provoke--conversation, the mutual exploration and testing of human souls, and their dramatization of the various ways conversation can go wrong and correct itself.
The book is a summa of sorts: "city of words" is how Cavell describes Plato's Republic and Kant's "kingdom of ends"--that is, the heaven of the philosophers--and to enjoy this, you'll have to be willing to find the entertaining of possibilities to be entertainment enough. As incentive, Cavell offers wonderful scene-by-scene synopses of the films he discusses (although you'll want to watch them for yourself). Mostly, though, it offers an occasion to be in the company of a thoughtful and humane mind--at times, surprisingly enough, your own.
The book is based on a course in Moral Reasoning that Cavell taught for years at Harvard.
The Missing Link.......2004-06-25
This is the third book by Dr. Cavell that I have read in the last few months. I am a fan of the cinema of the Great Depression era, and an article about this book in the New York Times' Arts section drew my interest to them. This is not a book for fans of movies of that era. I will say that the book sleeve and other promos, at least for this volume, do not mislead. This is a book for the learned, for the erudite, and scholarly who have a desire to integrate classical philosophy into their own value system and who have a strong background and familiarity with Great Western philosophers.
Dr. Cavell uses the screenplay as a framework to structure his discussion. More about this later. It should also be mentioned that some of his earlier works in this style (philosophy and movies) and the critiques of them by his peers once again are discussed, defended where necessary, and otherwise explained. The writing although difficult to follow at times, has been edited more thoroughly than that in his previous books. One cannot but marvel at the breadth and depth of his knowledge.
One must accept, as a willing suspension of disbelief, that viewers of the film at the time of its release during the Great Depression had the wherewithal to understand links to any of the great philosophers of Western Civilization as Dr. Cavell does. They just wanted to escape the dreariness of life in the Great Depression by going to the movies. Think of Cecilia in "The Purple Rose of Cairo" contemplating the meaning of life while peeling potatoes. On one viewing, as Dr. Cavell has pointed out, one is not likely to contemplate deep philosophical meanings on the way home from the show.
Second, Dr. Cavell accepts and dissects the rendition of the screen play by the actors and directors in describing the story and its philosophical ramifications. In this book and his two previous works in this style. What is not discussed is the link, the filtration if you will, between the writers of the original manuscript and the effect of the screenwriters' adaptation and interpretation of that story. Without knowledge of that confounder, one realizes the artificiality of this construct and the richness of Dr. Cavell's imagination.

Customer Reviews:
A great book about a remarkable American composer.......2000-08-13
The name of Marc Blitstein -- an extrordinarily talented and nearly forgotten 20th cnetury American composer -- resurfaced last year when Tim Robbins' film "Cradle Will Rock" lovingly resurrected the New York cultural scene during the Depression. The film builds to the glorious moment in 1937 when Orson Welles, John Housman and a bunch of courageous performers (all of whom risked forfeiting their W.P.A. paychecks and rejoining the breadlines) defied the Government's lockout and marched 20 blocks to a hastily rented theater for the opening performance of Blitzstein's delightful agitprop musical. The film doesn't tell us much about Blitstein, who comes across a driven, somewhat strange songwriter who recently lost his wife. Eric Gordon's remarkable biography fills in the blamks.
Marc Blitstein was a superbly trained classical composer whose serious music is largely forgotten (the only instrumental work available on CD via Amazon.com is his 1931 piano concerto; the CD his magnificent opera "Regina," based on Lillian Hellman's play "The Little Foxes," is not to be found; his agitprop opera, "No For an Answer," which was first performed in 1939, has never been releaded on CD; his "Airborne Symphony" largely written while on duty in the Army Air Force." has also unavailable.)
Blitzstein was raised in Philadelphia, the son of Russian Jewish immagrants. His family was comfortably middle class (they operated a bank that served the immigrant community) but never lost touch with their socialist roots. Marc was a prodigy who scratched out a living during the 1920's from lecturing and writing on the new music. (Some of his reviews trashing some of his far better remembered contemporaries such as Aaron Copland, Virgil Thompson and Kurt Weill made me wonder about his critical judgement.) He became swept up in the social ferment of the 1930's and tried his hand writing inspiring songs for the masses. He was captivated by the Soviet social experiment and saw it as the only chance to achieve social justice for the common man. He joined the Communist Party in the mid-30's and closely hewed to the oscillations of the Party line. (Although his enthusiastic fellow traveling earned him FBI surveillance throught the J. Edgar Hoover era and a 4-page entry in "Red Channels" -- he was hassled very little by HUAC and Joe McCarthy. Blitzstein testiified before HUAC on 1949; he freely admitted Party membership but refused to name names. He quit the Party in 1949 over the Soviet Party's campaign against "formalism," which he considered an invasion of his artistic freedom. One delicious tidbit unearthed by Gordon is that the US Air Force orchestra peformed Blitzstein's choral "Airborne Symphony." which was composed while he was a dues-paying member of the Communist Party, at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Wright Brother's first flight. )
Blitztein -- along with Aaron Copland and Virgil Tmompson -- is in the pantheon of America's homosexual composers. Gordon's book thooroughly explores this aspect of his life, which includes a trooubled marriage to a neurotic young woman writer who died of anorexia nervosa at 31, with remarkable sensitivity and insight. (Blitzstein's obsessive pursuit of macho sex partners led to his death at 59; while vacationing in Martinique he was beaten by 3 young sailors he picked up while cruising waterfront dives and died of internal bleeding.) Blitzstein's homosexuallity provides some hilarious touches (his wartime experiences in London before the era of don't ask/don't tell are worth the price of the book).
Despite a valiant try, Blitzstein never made it on Broadway. During the 1940's and 50's he literally knew everybody worth knowing in the world of American theater -- Lenny Bernstein was a close friend -- and it seemed that he was on the edge of glorious success. Alas, it never happened. He was a much better composer and lyricist than librettist (Bertstein stole one of his melodies for "Maria" in "West Side Story"). Both of his lavishlly produced 1950's musicals --"Rueben Rueben" died a horrible death in Boston and "Juno," based on O'Casey's "Juno and the Paycock," closed after a short run -- have disappeared without a trace. Ironically, his only success was off-Broadway: his briliant adaptation of the Brecht/Weill masterpiece "Der Driegroschenoper" ("The Threepenny Opera"), which ran for 6 years at the Theatre de Lys. Royalties from the casr album and the single "Mack the Knife" constitute the vast bulk of Bitstein's estate.
Blitzstein's greatest ambition was to become America's premier operatic composer. Alas, this too was not to be. is first true opera, "Regina," has has several regional productions but has not been produced in New York since 1960. He devoted the last 4 years of his life to an opera about Sacco and Vanzetti, which had been commisioned by the Ford Foundation and optioned by the Metropolitan Opera. He got bogged down in research for this project -- he wanted every detail to absolutely right -- and it is doubtful that he would have ever completed this magnum opus. Late in life he rediscovered his Jewish roots while on an extended visit to Isreal and completed one of two short operas based on the stories of Barnard Malamud; "Idiots Come First" has been praised as his finest oeratic work but, alas, is not available on CD.
Marc Blitzstein was a remarkable man. And this meticuolously researched and beautifully written book thoroughly captures the man and his facinating times. I highly recommend it.

Colorful, friendly and fun.......2006-08-14
When 'The Pathfinder Psychic Talking Board' arrived I couldn't wait to take it out of the box and give it a try. The board is colorful, very friendly feeling and with all the information available on it - looks to be very fun. This could be a focal point of some interesting parties.
But to my dismay, I couldn't use it right out of the box. I have bought many games where the board is cut and folded so it will fit in the box. Unfortunately, when you take this out of the box, it is cut up one quarter of it and folded in fourths so when you open it up full, there is a deep crease going across the board one way and a nice slice going the other way for a half of the board. When I tried to glide the 'answer finder disc' across the face of the board, it would drag over the crease - actually change direction to follow the crease - and if I ran it over the sliced area, it would catch on the lip of the slice and stop unless I pushed a little harder. To use the board as it is intended, I think it will take a bit to smooth the seams. I am planning to mount it on a table and put a glass cover on it - that way the plastic disc will glide smoothly over the 'affected' areas of the board.
I feel it was worth what I paid and that the little bit of effort to make it operate smoothly will not affect that fun.
A GREAT BOOK. AND THAT'S OUR FINAL ANSWER!.......2003-01-07
We haven't had this much fun since we last played with our Ouija board! And finding answers to those questions plaguing you -- queries about live, love and liberty -- has never been easier: Simply touch your fingertips to the "Magical Message Indicator" in the center of the fold-out game board and ask your question. Quicker than you can say "tarot", a slight tingling sensation will pull the indicator around the board to rest on one or more of the illustrated symbols ... then look up the meaning of the symbols in the accompanying book. All we ask is that you never ask -- not even once -- "Is that your final answer?"
GREAT.......2000-07-27
I've used the Ouija board the Psychic Circle Tarot Cards all the other boards...You name it I've tried it. This is the best Product of it's kind ever made! It gives good answers and very practical solutions. It's just great! I asked this board a few questions and wrote down the answers, just for fun I then went to a Psychic and asked the same questions....I then compared....The were almost exactly the same even the wording was compariable! This is definently the best board...or as far as I'm concerned the best Psychic ever made! BUY ONE!
Farber and Zerner are the Martha Stewarts of the New Age!.......1999-10-04
This pair has produced many wonderful books and Tarot decks, and now this--it takes the cake! Punch your 1-Touch button and buy at least one immediately if not sooner!
Beautifully illustrated.......1999-09-09
I work in a bookstore, and I spotted this in the storeroom before it even hit the shelves. I own the Psychic Circle Message Board even though I've never used it, and I must say that the Pathfinder board is just as beautiful as the other. The drawings and symbols on the full color board are very neat and original...I do suggest this board or the Psychic Circle board to those of you out there who want a little bit more than the traditional "weejee" type board.

I read through this book really fast, a few days, enjoyed it, got all fired up thinking, "Yeah! I'm going to make my millions!" I started reading from the beginning again, taking actual notes, following the suggested charts that detail my assets and liabilities. I've got a lot of equity in my home and one rental property...let's put that equity to work, just like she has her case studies do! BUT...my current equity line (as of this writing) is at 8.25%, not exactly a cheap loan. Loren makes out like it's no big deal to take all of your equity and simply buy a dozen rental properties for $6000 down (where the HECK do you get deals like that???) that immediately cashflow. But the reality is that cashing in your equity for investments and business is amazingly risky--a risk compounded by lack of experience and knowledge. How do you know that investment will cover the interest on your increased mortage payment or HELOC? Loren doesn't get into that...she merely recommends finding a "team" to help you figure this out, passing on the real issues to someone else--someone who will take your money, perhaps?
Wealth Building System in YOUR hands.......2007-06-17
Dear Reader,
If you thinking to buy this book prepare yourself with pen an paper to begin your steps to Building Wealth.
I am one of the people who was taking her coaching course and learned how all the principals she used in a book will help me to create my Personal Wealth .
She starts off with the Building Blocks of "Wealth Cycle" which are:
1. Gap Analysis: basically the difference between Current State and Future Desired State.
2. Financial Baseline: This is the Current State position - taking a stock of where you are currently!
3. Freedom Day: The objective or the Future Desired State - where you want to be say, 120 days from now.
4. Debt Management: She has a Five Step Debt Elimination Plan about which you should read in the book itself.
5. Entities: This is one of those things that most of the "Get Rich" brigade trots - i.e.; create a complex maze of LLCs, trusts and S-Corps etc.
6. Cash Machine: Find a way to earn from your existing skills. This is something that required a lot of concentration - because in my view this is the crux of the transition from debt ridden life to becoming a millionaire.
7. Wealth Account: This is base of the "pay-yourself" principle.
8. Forecasting: You need to create a "map" in order to follow it. This is essentially the "budget" which she calls with a different name.
9. Assets: Asset Allocation is the basis of wealth creation. This is very similar to the "Cash Quadrant" of Kiyosaki in "Rich dad Poor Dad"
10. Leadership: If you need to chart a new way for yourself - you need to take lead on it. This is a principle more to get one take charge of his or her's state.
11. Teamwork: Even though one needs to lead - you cannot achieve anything if you do not have others with whom you can join hands and create synergies. So she - again like Robert Allen and Kiyosaki - calls for creating a team of professionals!
12. Conditioning: You need to create a mind that can create money at any stage.
In the book he goes through case studies of her clients and I am one of them who love the system.
I believe in what she saying in her book:
"You can give me someone who's severely in debt, you can give me a single mom on a low income, you can even give me a guy who's living a big lifestyle on fumes. I can take all of them and make them millionaires."
All you have to do is follow the steps of the system and DO what need to be done to get where you want to be.
"Once you set the Wealth Cycle Process in motion, you can be on your way to having everything you ever wanted much faster than you ever thought possible"
To Your Success,
