Great book.......2006-07-19
This book is great for beginers and good for someone a little further along. It gives you most airbrush tricks that you'l need to paint whatever you want to paint.

I hate to gush but this is, imho, the single best book on airbrushing that I've seen. It covers technique from beginner to advanced. The instructions are straight forward. I suppose they could seem boring if you're an advanced artist. Since I learn from even a rehash of what I already new, I wasn't bored.
Unlike other reviewers, I wasn't disappointed because it doesn't cover painting motorcycles or helmets. The title is fairly straightforward and a good clue to what the book covers. If you're only interested in painting motorcycles, try How to Custom Paint Graphics here on Amazon.
If on the other hand, you see an airbrush as another tool in expressing yourself through art, get this book. Vero is a master at solidifying visualization. He introduced the use of shields and the book contains a template for his design for one of the most versatile shields around.
When you aren't using it for reference, I recommend putting it on the coffee table. People who drop by my apartment are instantly drawn to the cover which features an illustration of Vero's "Study of a Girl". Instant conversation starter!
Rado Vero is recognized as one of the greatest illustrators who ever lived. Reading his thoughts on airbrush and different ways to create are as invaluable as reading Da Vinci's ideas on creating perspective. It didn't bother me that it was first printed in 1983. Nothing in this book has been outmoded. In fact, many of his ideas, such as use of shields, are now the standard in art schools. I expect it to be equally as valid in 2083.
I have bought multiple copies of this book and given them to friends who are just getting into airbrushing. I expect that I will buy quite a few more before it's over.

Covers the mechanical stuff more briefly than many, and has a nice section on fixing problems, including straightening a bent needle. Gets briskly on to the =use= of the thing, and runs a series of exercises to help you get the hang of techniques, including learning how to draw freehand. This guy is not hung up on anal-compulsive frisket cutting, but recommends a "universal mask" you can make out of a styrene or metal sheet that will do for a lot of work.

Excellent book however as the title states relates mainly to studio applications and technical details. Not really applicable to air brush enthusiasts wanting to style cars or helmets etc.

Visions of Wimbledon is a cool book, but I was expecting much more of it. There are cool pictures, but I missed more detailed photos and articles about legendary matches, like Bjorg X McEnroe.
You won't find much information, but it's not a GREAT artistic photo book. Actually, the photos seemed average to me, much less than I had expected.

You already know Camryn Manheim can act. She won the Emmy Award as the don't-mess-with-me attorney Ellenor Frutt on The Practice. Manheim made the ceremony itself entertaining by hoisting her trophy and hollering, "This is for all the fat girls!"
But can she write? Yes. This memoir is by turns funny ("If Barbie were a real woman, she'd have to walk on all fours due to her proportions") and excruciating. It helps that the material was honed in a one-woman show that sold out at New York's big-deal Public Theater, but the subject matter was strange and interesting in the first place. Manheim could not possibly be a less likely candidate for artistic and commercial success on TV. Born Debi Manheim in Peoria, the very metaphor for mainstream culture, Manheim re-created herself as a dozen-earringed California biker chick, a Renaissance Faire wench, a protester who helped drive the Miss California Pageant out of Santa Cruz, and one of 28 actors in America accepted at NYU's exclusive graduate school. Funny, but it didn't make me feel any better about my weight!.......2005-07-20
Camryn Manheim is an sassy, award-winning actress and laugh-out-loud funny. This book is a personal account of her experiences of fat-ism and her journey to self-acceptance.
Manheim is a natural storyteller and, being overweight myself, there was a lot here to relate to, but although I enjoyed the book, there were no groundbreaking revelations for me here ... though it does make a pretty strong case against society's obsession with being thin, this book is in no way a "self-help" book (to be fair, it doesn't claim to be) and it didn't help me to "make peace" with my fat. It did however make me laugh a lot and that's reason enough to encourage others to read it!
Thank you Camryn, for speaking out for big women everywhere.

Camryn Manheim is a fat activist. Her experiences in a world where people are literally dying to be thin include getting in to the NYU Masters of Fine Arts program, gracing the cover of "fat" magazines such as Radiance and winning an Emmy for her performance on The Practice. She is a likeable, mature and attractive woman who has fought passionately for what she believes in. But does that make one a good author? In Manheim's case, it damn well does.
"Wake up, I'm fat," is a hilarious, bittersweet page-turner. This socially critical memoir mainly deals with one individual's struggles on growing up in our superficial world. Anyone who has ever felt like an outsider, be it because of their race, religion or looks, will immediately be able to relate to the amiable narrator.
Manheim manages to be honest about the ugly underbelly of today's beauty image and her struggles without sounding whiny. She uses dark humor and clever prose to describe how she got to where she is today.
Subjects such as erotic weight gain or personal ads are also dealt with in this book. They may make the reader feel slightly squeamish at first, but ultimately they just make this book a more interesting read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about "the underdog being on top" or who simply likes a good story told well.

After reading the past reviews, I wonder if I'm the only man who read this book. The first thing that caught my eyes, I'll be honest, was the cover picture. Camryn is a gorgeous woman with very nice legs. She is also a person of deep character, who has persevered and triumphed despite the prejudices of our shallow society. She relates her struggles in a moving way, but avoids the whining, "why is the world so unfair?" tone that unfortunately characterizes some similiar works. If you want a glimpse into the mind of a powerful, beautiful and intoxicatingly magnificent woman, then you will enjoy this book.

Like the author of this book, I have had a weight problem all of my life and have only recently managed to come to terms with the fact that I will likely always be a plus-sized woman. Thanks to this funny and inspiring book, I now realize that being large doesn't have to get in the way of achieving my dreams. Who says being skinny is a prerequisite for happiness anyways?

When I first saw this book, it caught my eye. I thought the cover photo of Camryn was absolutely beautiful. Although I'm not fat, this book in part inspired me to accept myself and to not allow my insecurities to get the better of me. Remember, you don't have to be fat to get something out of this book!

This book is very good for anyone who is interested in the film Last Year in Marienbad and wants to know more about its background, origins, how it was made, filmed, the music composed for it, and so on, as well as some of how it has been received. On the other hand, it is limited in its interpretive grasp of the film.

Absolutely a "must have" book for every Elvis fan.......2002-07-22
This book is one of the most impressive Elvis books I have ever read. Over the years, like countless other Elvis fans, I have owned or read dozens of books about the King. So, by now, readers would think they have read most of what is known about him. Wrong. This book is loaded with stories and facts that I have not seen elsewhere.In fact, even Peter Guralnick's books (ie: "Last Train..". "Careless Love"), do not have some of the information that is contained in this book. For instance, I didn't know that Elvis and his father were going to testify in a FBI case involving them being scammed out of $950,000 (over the purchase of the Jetstar airplane Elvis bought). The author points out that this can be found in public FBI files. Yet no other book has every mentioned it. I could go on and on. There are highlighted pages devoted to Elvis concerning race, girls he was involved with, an untold story that occured when he was 16, etc. The chapters are broken up into segments: his life, his music, influences, people who influenced him, his essential albums, essential songs, etc. I strongly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed. It is among the top three books I have ever read on Elvis. Absolutely essential.

A useful book about the Pirc.......2005-11-27
This is a good introductory book on the Pirc and the Modern. Still, I wish it had covered just a little more material.
I rarely play either the Pirc or the Modern as Black. But when I do play the Pirc with Black, I don't play it the way this book describes it.
Gallagher starts by showing us the Austrian attack: 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 f4. That's always been a good reason for Black to avoid the Pirc. But in 1988, Seirawan found a way for Black to draw by repetition in a key line: 4...Bg7 5 Nf3 c5 6 Bb5+ Bd7 7 e5 Ng4 8 e6 fxe6 9 Ng5 Bxb5 10 Nxe6 Bxd4! 11 Nxd8 Bf2+ 12 Kd2 Be3+ 13 Ke1. And now, some folks have gone back to the Pirc.
Next we see the Classical attack: 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 Nf3 Bg7 5 Be2 0-0 6 0-0. Black has three good replies here, the relatively risky 6...Nc6, the more solid 6...Bg4, and the obvious and strong 6...c6. In the Austrian attack, ...c6 is a poor move and ...c5 usually needs to be played, in order to give some counterplay and to soften up that a1-h8 diagonal. But in the Classical, ...c6 is typically an excellent move, as it frees the Queen (which then heads to a5, where it covers e5, or to c7, where it indirectly covers e5, or to b6) and also prepares ...b5.
We also see White play an early Be3. I tend to avoid Be3 for White in most openings. And here we see some reasonable Black defences, generally involving an early ...c6, of course. We see 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 Nf3 Bg7 5 h3 0-0 6 Be3 c6. And 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 Nf3 Bg7 5 Be3 c6 6 Qd2 Qa5. Here, White is playing the so-called "150 attack," which became popular after folks realized that White could survive an early ...Ng4 and thus did not need to play h3 right away.
Several authors recommend the line 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 Be3 for White. And this book discusses it. The idea is to splatter Black if she castles into it with 4...Bg7 5 Qe2 0-0. The best move for Black is (you guessed it) 4...c6.
Gallagher does discuss 4 g3 for White. And then we get to the line I play for White. 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 Bg5. Black can play 4...c6, 4...h6, or 4...Bg7. White's idea is to play e5, generally preceded by f4, and blast Black off the board. A key game Gallagher cites is Ulibin versus Himdan, from 2002, which went 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 Bg5 c6 5 Qd2 b5 6 e5 (can White really do this?) dxe5 7 dxe5. In the actual game, Black got in trouble by playing the obvious 7...Qxd2+, after 8 Bxd2 Ng4 9 f4. Gallagher suggests 7...Ng4 8 Qxd8+ Kxd8 9 Nf3 Bg7 10 Bf4 Nd7 11 Rd1 Ke8. He points out that White can now try 12 e6, which I think is better for White, or even 12 Nxb5, which I think is probably playable for White.
Still, if I were to play 1 e4 d6 2 d4 Nf6 as Black, this book would not help you much against me. After 3 Nc3, I would not play 3...g6. I would play either 3...c6 (the Pribyl defence) or 3...e5 (which can transpose into a line of the Philidor). Neither of these are covered in this book, but I think they ought to be. With White, after 3...c6, I play 4 f4 Qa5 5 Bd3 (I think 5 e5 is reasonable as well). After 3...e5, I'm willing to let Black play that Philidor line after 4 Nf3. Other options are 4 f4 or 4 dxe5, but I don't like them.
The book concludes with a couple of chapters on the Modern Defence: 1 e4 g6. First, we see White try 2 c4. That's what I do! My idea is to get c4 in before I have to play Nc3 to defend my e-pawn from a Knight on f6. After 1 e4 g6 2 c4 Bg7 3 d4 d6 4 Nc3, Black can play 4...Nf6, after which I am happy to take the White side of a King's Indian (obviously outside the scope of this book). Black's alternatives are 4... Nc6, 4...Nd7, and 4...e5, all of which are covered in the book.
Of course, it is more normal for White to try 1 e4 g6 2 d4 Bg7 3 Nc3, blocking that c-pawn. And now Black can try 3...c5 or 3...c6 instead of 3...d6. 3...c5 gives White a chance to transpose into a Benoni or an Open Sicilian, and the book does not cover it (although I think it ought to at least mention 3...c5 4 dxc5). But to his credit, Gallagher does cover 3...c6, the Gurgenidze defence. He tells about three White ideas: 4 Nf3, 4 f4, and 4 Bc4. Actually, I think it is also worth knowing about a couple of less popular tries for White here, namely 4 Be3 and 4 h3, but Gallagher does not mention these.
I thought the section on the Modern Defence was a little too short, and I think it failed to get across many of Black's ideas for taking advantage of her opportunities on the a1-h8 diagonal. But in general, I liked this book, and I recommend it.
Only for the Pirc!.......2004-07-04
As usual Gallagher has produced a solid opening book. However take note that the section on The Modern is really short and should have been replaced by more stuff on The Pirc.
The Pirc is quite a complex opening which can led to many deferent pawn structures. All in all, this opening would have deserved a whole book, even though I admit Gallagher explained the ideas of the Pirc (especially of the main lines) quite well.
I therefore especially recommend this book as a first one on the Pirc Defence. If you are interested only in the Modern, you should avoid this book.

The book delivers on it's basic premise; and I believe adds much more. I found it more readable than Pirc Alert. The book review above clearly states what's inside. There are numerous full games, variations, tips, warnings and new strategies discussed. The author even shows the winning white % for the lines chosen and variations discussed. There is no "quick fix" to meeting e4; as far as I can tell. I like the flexibility within the Pirc system. It meets my needs as a learning student of the game who doesn't have the time to study the more complicated defenses. Memorization isn't for me. (...)

Lot of games was analyzed/published in books like as Pirc Alert! (Alburt), Modern defence (Speelman), Pirc defence (Videki), Pirc by Nunn&McNab without blunder check.
Not useful for experience player.
However missing more space for Modern (when is in the title ...)

Pioneering Infromation/Knowledge Based Management Concept.......2007-10-03
As a Senior People and Technology Management Consultant, I too have been frustrated by my voice, and the voice of others, not being heard.
I have also advocated that old Industerial Management techniques can not be applied to an Information/Knowledge Worker Based Management Era with emphessis on Empowerment, Teamwork, and Communal Efforts.
With 25+ years of management in startups and major corporations, I have realized that Mr. Covey's 8th habit, is the foundation to manage and lead greatness, innovation, empwerment, and super effectivity.
Ideas and concepts presented here, including the "Indian Talking Stick" are in agreement with some of the best management and leadership best practices such as the "HP Way", Dale Carnegie, and others.
There are also outstanding examples and suggestions to solve leadership problems.

Find your voice and inspire others to do the same. That's habit number eight. To find your voice there must be a conscience-based unity of mind, heart, body, and spirit. As an example, for a person to be fulfilled at work s/he needs to be able to use his/her talents and gifts (Mind), must be passionate about the work (Heart), must be paid fairly (body), and the work must have meaning (Spirit).
After explaining how to achieve personal voice, Covey shows how to achieve and institutionalize organizational voice. It requires the following:
1) Modeling - or setting an example to develop trust.
2) Pathfinding - creating a vision/mission, values, and strategic goals.
3) Aligning - changing structures, systems, processes, etc. to match the pathfinding.
4) Empowering - unleashing people's creativity and various other capabilities.
The concept of the Indian walking stick as a means of communicating and resolving conflict as well as the trim tabbing analogy for bringing about change are also well worth the price tag.
It's not "The Seven Habits," but it's really hard to go wrong with Covey. He genuinely seems to be focused on helping others improve in order to make the world a better place. Actually, the seven habits do weave their way in and out of this book. It also includes quite a few inspirational stories to include the father who leaves his son with the following advice on his deathbed, "Don't do life like I did. I never made a difference." For the first time the son realizes that he wanted his success to reach higher than him.

Finding Identity for Self and Others.......2007-08-27
As with most of the Covey books, there are nuggets of wisdom hidden within this book, the challenge is to find them. The 8th Habit, (defined as `Find Your Voice and Inspire Others to Find Theirs'), attempts to teach one basic paradigm: That people are whole people - body, mind, heart and spirit. But its focus is on the voice. When this `voice' is defined (on page 5) by Covey as the nexus of talent, passion, need, and conscience, it is easy to relate to this foundation element of human nature - our calling or individual identity - from which our contribution to relationships (work or personal) flows.
After getting this identity piece, what may not be so easy to relate to are the next 323 pages of Covey speak, although there is an interesting discussion on the 4 intelligences - Physical, Mental, Emotional, & Spiritual - woven thru the chapters, and Appendix 2, which contains a literature review of leadership theories, was interesting! This book is recommended for those with the time and patience to pan for gold nuggets in a meandering and slow moving stream.

Surprised by the punch Covey still has.......2007-08-08
I expected to be underwhelmed by this volume. "More of the Covey machine," I thought. I was wrong. This book can reach a part of you that's beyond what you can get to by applying the first 7 habits. "Life changing" is an understatement.
