Book Description

An essential companion for every art and museum lover, whether on the road or from your armchair. Much more than a simply practical guide, this book is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour not only of this country's great museums but also of the history of art in America. Suzanne Loebl is the perfect, passionate companion, as she takes you from the august halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the intimate galleries of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, from the breathtaking gardens surrounding the Huntington in San Marino, California, to the Hispanic Heritage Wing of the International Museum of Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She gives you a tour of the physical space and the museum's most beloved or noteworthy works, and an overview of how both the collection and the building came to be—fascinating histories of personal taste, serendipity, civic pride, and astute management. The book includes the essential information about hours, location, and activities for children at each museum as well as a convenient index to collection strengths. 70 b/w illustrations.

If you travel with a list of local NPR stations so you can keep up with commercial free information and news, then this is the perfect traveling companion. The listings and descriptions of large and small museums, both specialized and general are delightfully informative. Ms Loebl has certainly done her homework. This is a must for family trips.

        Book Description

If you thought Dennis Miller was done ranting, guess again. In Still Ranting After All These Years, recorded in early 2002, Miller is in fine form, commenting on everything from "War and Terrorism" to Enron; from "Obsessed Parents" to the "End of Class;" to "Truth in the Media," and so much more. Throughout, Miller is what we have come to expect from him: smart, cutting, laugh-out-loud funny, and more times than not ... right.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dennis Miller takes a everyday's guy view of the world.......2007-01-04

Dennis is a wonderful comedian, I laugh and find myself thinking how smart he is. He looks at life and the events in the world the way most everyday guy's would. He isn't to shy to call a spade a spade. He makes sense in most of the stuff he talks about. IF strong language offends, this might not be your cup of tea. Dennis Miller is delightfully funny, has an interesting take on the crazies of the world. Worth the price of the DVD.

1 out of 5 stars this was terrible.......2006-06-15

If 0 stars was an option i would have selected it. this is the dryest, dullest delivered comedy i've ever heard. I should actually say that he had no delivery whatsoever. this was definately a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars OKAY, So I Haven't Read The Book (but at least I admit it).......2006-02-25

I find it interested how often people write "reviews" of work they've never even read or listened to. For instance, several people took the time to write a review of this CD even though they clearly wouldn't have been caught dead listening to it. People GET A LIFE!!!! Unless you've listened to this CD, keep you views about Miller's political pursuasion to yourself. This isn't the place for it! This is the place for people who have actually lilstened to the CD to tell others what they thought about it... not for you to grace us with your worldview of politics and the events of the day. Please, do us all a favor and keep it to yourself.

5 out of 5 stars BEWARE LIBERAL SCUM ! (YOUR TIME HAS COME..).......2005-09-30

THANK YOU DENNIS MILLER FOR PROVIDING US REAL THINKERS WITH POLITICAL COMEDY WITH ACTUAL SUBSTANCE. WITH A SEA LITTERED WITH CRY-BABY LIBERAL COMICS (MAHER, JOHN STEWART, CROSS, ETC.)WHO APPEAL TO NOTHING BUT IGNORANT COLLEGE STUDENTS, BRAIN-DEAD HIPPIES, AND "LIMOSINE LIBERAL" YUPPIES, (NOT TO MENTION THOSE BRAINWASHED INTO THINKING SOCIALISM ACTUALLY IS A "MISUNDERSTOOD" CONCEPT..), IT'S HARD TO DISPUTE MILLER'S BRAND OF COMEDY.
IF YOU DIDN'T BOTHER TO EVEN LISTEN TO THIS ENLIGHTENIG WORK (LIKE THE IDIOT REVIEWER WHO SLAMMED THIS..)BY SOMEONE WHO TAKES AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO COMEDY, THEN GO BACK TO GETTING YOUR HALF-ASSED POLITICAL EDUCATION FROM M.T.V., AND ASK MICHAEL MOORE

Published a mere 13 days after the death of Katharine Hepburn, Kate Remembered is best appreciated as a valentine of devoted friendship. It's a moving study of mutual trust and admiration between Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer A. Scott Berg and legendary Hollywood icon Hepburn, who'd established an instant rapport in 1983, beginning a 20-year conversation that blossomed into this enchanting "biographical memoir." As a casual but authoritative survey of Hepburn's career, Berg's book offers little new information to anyone who's read previous Hepburn biographies or Me: Stories of My Life, Hepburn's bestselling 1991 memoir. But the duality of Berg's title reinforces his purpose: "More than my remembrances," writes Berg in his author's note, "this book intends to convey hers." As such, Kate Remembered offers a rare, unvarnished portrait of one of the 20th century's most influential women, achieving a personal intimacy while making the reader feel welcomed in Hepburn's private world of privilege.

Although Berg (the acclaimed biographer of legendary editor Max Perkins, producer/mogul Samuel Goldwyn, and aviator Charles Lindbergh) had written all but the final paragraphs by 2001, Hepburn insisted this book remain unpublished until after her death, which came, in quiet dignity at age 96, on June 29, 2003. Given the book's pre-publication secrecy, it's hardly tabloid-worthy, serving instead to correct or clarify details from Hepburn's glory days--especially her long-term affair with Spencer Tracy--while offering choice bits of Hollywood gossip, Hepburn's frequently scathing assessments of other actors, and amusing encounters with such luminaries as Michael Jackson and Warren Beatty (both of whom appear as mock suitors with selfish motivations). It's a brisk read but a substantial one, richly emotional and as dignified as Hepburn herself, whose faults and foibles make her even more appealing than her beloved public persona. --Jeff Shannon

          4 out of 5 stars Kate Remembered.......2007-03-22

Wonderful insights into the life of this fascinating woman! Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in the "Golden Age" of Hollywood.

          3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2007-01-09

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book.

As several people have already stated, the book is often more about Berg and his reaction to Hepburn, rather than a biography of Hepburn herself. It is often very touching and humorous in certain places, and is well-written enough to sustain interest.

However -- something just didn't feel right about the book. Berg was hardly the first or only person to interview her, so how exactly how did this relationship develop? I couldn't help feeling that Berg was exaggerating the extent of their friendship.

Additionally, I found his description of Kate's final years both depressing and exploitative. Berg seems to believe that he's describing her with respect and dignity, but I just found myself thinking - oh, sure, Hepburn would be THRILLED that all this would be in print. I certainly hope my "friend" would not write about my death that way.

All in all, this book contains interesting tidbits, but you can't help feeling that Berg is either a bit phony or opportunistic.

          5 out of 5 stars Kate Remembered.......2006-07-23

I had previously read The Making of the African Queen and Me, but Kate Remembered seemed to tie it all together. Actually, I picked up the book at Wal-Mart, on a table sale. Always having been a long-time fan, I grabbed the book and read it in 2 days. I think what comes through a lot, is not just Katharine Hepburn's life, but the relationshipt Scott Berg had with her, perhaps her only real confidante except for Spencer Tracy, and even then, perhaps not him, because she was there for him, not him for her. At any rate, it's a damn good read, and rather poignant at the end. I did shed a tear. Well worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to remember why you love Kate, read this book!.......2006-07-12

No person in their right mind could write a biography of Kate and not be personally affected to this degree. The impact she had on Mr. Berg's life and vice versa showed through in even the most intimate of moments between them.

Anyone can find facts and anecdotes just about everywhere these days, but how often can such a personal glimpse offer the reader so much?

Kate came to life in this book. I saw her talking and felt her strong presense throughout. I was once again reminded of why I was such a fan. You can't help but fall a little bit in love with this woman and it shouldn't be a great surprise that even Mr. Berg was taken away by her presense, caring and passion. It shined in every passage.

          2 out of 5 stars Self Serving.......2006-04-25

I give this book two stars because I am a fan of Katharine Hepburn. The only thing I learned in this book is that the author wanted to make sure everyone knew how much Ms. Hepburn adored him and how witty he was with her, and how much influence he had on her later on in life; and I found that kind of creepy. If you want to hear her voice without Berg's slant, just read "Me".

Originally published soon after Katharine Hepburn's death, Kate Remembered presents the silver-screen legend as a vibrant, feisty, opinionated woman. A. This book had me hooked on the fae and learning as much as i could about them.its a fantastic read, with awesome artwork and a graphical breakdown thats very easy to read through. it gives you a break down of two different kinds of fae, the mountain folk and the fae of the wylds. it has a font of information if your intrested in bringing any of the wyld ones into your game. the biggest downside to the book are the charms. they seem very vague and not a lot of information to assist in the imagination.the charms themselves leave you wondering what the hell they really do, but luckily, not all the charms are that way. some you can figure out pretty easily. Other then that, its a wonderfull source book that will leave you wanting to expand the game bounderies to the wyld itself.
                                Happy Shoppen..

3 out of 5 stars Solid overall but a little complicated.......2005-01-31

Let me first say I was extremely excited to get my hands on this book. I have loved every bit of Exalted I have read and was anxious to see what was in store with "The Fair Folk".
Overall I am pleased and I think it can certainly bring a new level of play to anyone who purchases the book. However, as previous critics have stated, it is difficult to understand. Shaping is abstract, as are most things in the Wyld. But abstract notions are not easily given to rules. So any rules guiding shaping and the environment can be hard to wrap your head around.
Next is the fact that while they are masters of the Wyld, Creation is a tough place for Raksha. Not enough of their Charms or powers effect the "real world". Those that do can be seen through, as glamour is mere illusion. It becomes easy for higher essence and ability characters, villains, etc. to run over what power a Raksha does have. On the flip side of this notion is that if the Raksha are the bad guys in your campaign, your players will be challenged and will eventually outstrip their adversaries (which is after all, the point).
The primary concept behind any storyteller driven book has always been, take what you want, make up what you can and throw out what you don't care for. This book is no exception. All in all this is a solid book with great springboard material to get your game moving and villains fleshed-out. As to an all Raksha game, I think it is best left to mature players who have the patience to understand the abstract and are not looking for a "pick-up game". Just my opinion.

Three or 4 interesting things, but written for Grandpa Simpson. Utterly disappointing for financial types. Mostly it is a publicity stunt for his Hedge Fund.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read - informative and entertaining.......2007-07-19

With the Bear Stearns hedge funds going from 20 billion to zero in a matter of months this is a great book to understand what the hedge fund world is all about. What the book lacks in structure it makes up for in substance and I found it an enlightening read. Part memoir, part investment smarts, it really is a good buy if you enjoy popular finance books. It possibly also may be dissected by historians in decades to come as an insight into the excesses and hubris of early 21st century capitalism if many more triple 'AAA' rated CDOs suddenly becomes worthless and the whole financial system starts falling apart.

You also get a sense from the writing of wall street's disconnect from the 'real' world of business that actually makes things and employs the rest of us. The likes of Buffett and Peter Lynch seem to have a relationship with what companies do. Mr Biggs seems to be in a much more abstract, rarified world where the worshipped idol is the Market wihout a thought for what it represents. Financial voyeurism at it's extreme.

For the ordinary wage earner (of which I am one) it would also be interesting to know what motivates someone like Mr. Biggs who has always been wealthy (and presumably has continued to get wealthier) to want to make more and not instead devote themselves to something else. In other words, what's the point? But maybe wealth is the point.

There's a gentle a swipe at George Soros for creating his foundation so he can leave a better legacy but whatever the motives, many would applaud the spirit of someone who says 'I have enough, I'll do something useful'.

Whatever my criticism, I'll buy his next book - and make him wealthier.

4 out of 5 stars A Look Behind the Hedge.......2007-06-06

Hedgehogging is a collection of anecdotes from the famous international investor, Barton Biggs. Through a series of short stories about other traders and money managers, he depicts many different styles and philosophies for investing. As he tells each story, he gives his opinions on just about every major topic in today's capital markets.

Though covering a hodgepodge of ideas, many of the anecdotes are about the pressure to perform and how it affects the psyche and personal lives of the money manager. Some of the stories are about speculative bets turned bad, such as one of Barton's own oil valuations gone awry. Every story has a different moral - maybe the trader unfairly got short squeezed, or a firm lost sight of the big picture when staring at a quantitative model.

Reading Hedgehogging puts you in the shoes of a Wall Street money manager. The stories tend to revolve around lifestyle and not investment strategy. It's easy to read, entertaining, but does not get too technical. I recommend it if you enjoy the field, but consider it more of an entertaining than informative read.

2 out of 5 stars Boring and Uninsightful.......2007-05-20

I was hoping that this book would be the Liar's Poker of the Hedge Fund world. Instead, it was a big disappointment. Here's why:

                                1) By and large, the book was a random hodgepodge of anecdotes thrown together. It wasn't one cohesive story. Each chapter was it's own mini-story, or series of dinner conversations. It wasn't a page-turner in the least.

                                2) I didn't find it all that insightful. Through much of it, I'm thinking, "Gee, I could have made up a story like that"

3)I found the tidbits of advice to be trite and annoying. All of them seemed to come from the "Hindsight is 20-20" point of view. At times, the message was contradictory, pointing out the foibles of people who held on to losers too long, while later extolling the virtues of people who stuck to their guns on unpopular stocks and hit the jackpot. If anything, reading his words made me believe that much more in the virtues of Random Walk Theorists, and weak Efficient Market Theories.

                                4) While I can't say that it was poorly written, it certainly wasn't that well written either.

To sum up, a rather boring book that didn't teach and didn't entertain.
