3 out of 5 stars So famous but not novel.......2000-06-19

Since prevailing French philosophy like theories of Foucault, Lacan, Derrida..., So many art historians seems like to use their language as 'politics of seeing', 'body politics'...The author of this book, Richard Leppert is not exception. He deply his position of writing on base of French philosophy or contemporary cultural theroy like Post colonialism. Contents of this book composed of 3 parts. Part 1: Sight/Sites for Seeing - about through the representation of painting, classical way of making pictures, few persons who have powers controll innocent people(mass) who not belong to main system. For simple example, at 19C some painters was drawn the money exactly(MONEY PAINTINGS) for the guests want illustion of millionaire. Part 2: Object - it's so similart with part 1. People represent(or supply) and ask (demand) the object pictures they want to have. But there is specific dogma! AS they paint the stil life, Stil life have the ANOTHER meaning - instruction on morality. For example, Flower means getting older people like fallen petals, And skull mean death directly! memento mori "Remember death" Humm.... Part 3: Body - it's so popular theme in contemporary cultural sciences. shortly speaking female body is reflection of desire of men's spectators. but through male nude painter reflect his oedipus complex in it. In conclusion. [Art and the committed eye] for students majoring art history or theory of art and interested in ART itself. But as previously titled, this book so famous and good for the side of introductory of new theory. But Not novel! Because the contens of this book already shown in other phiosophical studies and art historian's essay like John Berger [Ways of Seeing] or Mary Anne [ Believing is Seeing]... And right of choice is yours.

        5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2005-03-14

I picked this book up at a liquidation sale at a used book store mainly because I liked the title and not knowing anything about the author. This was my first reading of Patrick McManus and now I just have to read more of his works. My better half was trying to watch TV while I was reading this and I kept interrupting by reading sections of the book. His comment was "I can relate to that." I got to the point where I couldn't read any more until I wiped my eyes. This is a must-read for anyone who needs a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars 'Pass out laughing' funny.......2005-01-09

I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.

However, not everyone gets it. I have been shocked by watching people read McManus without so much as a smile (though most start snorting like wild pigs on acid) . My only guess is that getting McManus requires a couple things. First, it requires some understanding of his experiences. He absolutely nails all of the stupid things 'outdoors men (outdoors people)' do and think, but don't want anybody to know about. Second, you have to see the self-deprecating aspect of his humor. Third, you can't look for great literature in integrated books. Patrick McManus is an excellent writer, if you see these as independent stories simply collected in a volume. They are meant for adults who want to laugh at themselves. So, If you are willing to or already meet the above three criteria, you will love this book.

By the way, I am a professor of clinical psychology and (other than worrying a little about McManus) I sometimes recommend this and other McManus books. I do this with people who have racing thoughts and anxiety at bedtime, and when I believe they have the necessary experiences to find it funny. It often works quite well. I think of his stories as little pieces of happiness. (Oh, that even makes me sick to hear. Sorry)

5 out of 5 stars Strange Encounters of the Bird Kind.......2003-01-22

The title of these comments is from one of the tales in this third collection of short stories I have read by Mr. Patrick F. McManus. The author has been writing the yarns and his versions of his childhood "true" stories for decades, and has now produced 12 collections of these essays in book form. Many of the stories are about being outdoors and failing miserably as a hunter and fisherman, but one gets the impression that to the extent he fails, he does with seeming intent. It's the outdoors he loves, not harming it or its inhabitants. When he does speak of a successful outing with his friends he complains so much about the "success" that again you can tell coming home empty handed is his real goal. A collection of stories is what he is after.

The best stories here range from his childhood when speaking of why an 8 year old is perfectly competent to own his first knife, while even one day short of the 8th anniversary would be nothing less than a felony were a knife to be given to such an infant. He goes on at length as to how men delude themselves in to their thinking they have convinced their wives how their gun collections multiply without a single purchase. And in a story entitled, "A Hunker Is Not A Squat", he explains how with the correct posture, a stick and a dirt floor, The United Nations would be unnecessary, and world conflicts would end.

Mr. McManus writes for everyone who enjoys a good laugh, uncontrived humor, and just simple observations about human nature. He does not preach about the solutions to world problems, claim a cure for the common cold, or how to get rich. He just gives the reader the gift of laughter, an invaluable gift.

        5 out of 5 stars A Delight!.......2000-05-23

A book filled with humorous stories, this compilation of experiences was a treat to read! The Grasshopper Trap is only the second book I've read by Patrick McManus but now I want to track down all of his stories. McManus writes humor without the obscene, offensive language that seems so common everywhere these days. It's a refreshing, fun read with stories that entertain as well as remind us of a simpler, less frantic way of life.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't like laughing, DON'T READ THIS BOOK!.......1999-11-20

4 out of 5 stars A nice collection of 46 classic movie poster reproductions.......2003-03-30

"Science-Fiction and Horror Movie Posters in Full Color" presents full-color posters for 46 films including "King Kong," "Godzilla," "The Illustrated Man," "One Million B.C.," and "Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman." There is something to be said for the era of movie posters that featured bug-eyed monsters and scantily clad women and Alan Adler's collection presents some of the choice examples of such works of pop art. Any collection that includes both Raquel Welch and Allison Hayes knows what it is doing as far as I am concerned. This book is slightly oversized so these are still mini-posters, but this is not a bad deal for aficionados of the genre and an easy way to adorn your classroom or dorm room with some classic movie posters.

Elvis, Michael, Patti, Bruce--icons all. The Rolling Stone portraits assembled in this book depict five decades worth of musical sensations and idols. The juxtaposition of the shots heightens the fun of flipping through the photos: A young Mick Jagger sitting under a hairdryer faces Snoop Doggy Dog, his curls caught up in a hairdresser's clips; David Bowie in a loincloth counterbalances Björk in a fig leaf; Chris Isaak and John Lee Hooker stand opposite one another, each in a polka-dot shirt; Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, side by side and enveloped in clouds of smoke. These alignments of musicians from different eras and different genres make a simple, visual statement about the transcendent power of music. Every page reveals another familiar image that transports the readers to the moment they first saw the musicians on the cover of the magazine or heard their music. The undiscovered pictures are a treat as well. Individually, these portraits expose the essence of their subjects and speak volumes about the characters that created and sustain rock and roll.

This is one of the best photographic books I have ever seen. The photographers who took these photos really captured the feeling and emotions of the artists at the time. All the classic and famous personalities of music are here, from Ike and Tina to Bob Dylan; from Elvis to Bowie to Nirvana; from The Beatles and Stones to Alice Cooper and all that lies between (too too many to list here). An excellent array of both black and white and colour shots. The close ups allow you to see into the sometimes troubled, sometimes happy, but ever changing eyes of these rock icons. The broader shots show some of these bands and performers in their most comfortable and bizarre surrounds. A worthwhile purchase, that allows you to ponder each and every photo for hours and hours. In the back is a complete copy (small version) of the photos together with a who is who. Buy the hardcover; not only is it worth the price, but it will last forever. This is easily the greatest and most comprehensive collection of rock and roll pictures in one publication!

This book is excellent. It made me jelous that I couldn't experience the atmosphere of the time. The stars in the pictures range from Jerry Garcia to Iggy Pop, from Jimmy Hendrix to Dr. Dre. The photography is awesome. It really captures the attitdue of the musician. I would recommend this book to any one impressed by the talent of these outstanding artists. I am 18 and I loved the book. My dad is 50 and liked the book just as much!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A unique very practical book for the average player.......2007-08-12

Some people don't seem to admire Alburt's works (for moronic reasons IMHO), but I love them because they're easy to follow, well illustrated and highly instructive without being simplistic.

This book is eminently practical. On one page is a group of 4 board positions, each one being a problem for you to figure out. On the facing page are "answers" and their explanations, along with a title that summarizes the principle you're supposed to learn. And the idea is that if you study all 300 positions, you've learned fundamental ideas for ALL aspects of chess (which is the unique aspect of the book, versus a tactical problem collection).

It's a book you can pick up and learn a complete idea in a matter of minutes and put it back down again. And it's nice and compact.

5 out of 5 stars It should be 6 stars, don't be misled by the cover!!!!!!.......2007-07-17

I have brought about 20 to 30 books on tactics, I totally agrees 200% that chess is 99 % tactics and I cannot disagree anymore with the author of rapid chess improvement. But this tactic book is unique, I recieved it today and from 2 p.m. up to 10 p. m. , whenever I have time, I would study it. All the examples are very interesting and instructive. Do not be misled by the picture of the cover that this book is for children, no, it is for intermediate to advanced players. Compared with John Nunn's book " Learn chess tactics ", some of the examples are even more difficult. I can assure you that, after studying all these 300 problems,no matter you solve them all, or part of it, or even none, just memorising all those moifs would make you at least 100 points higher!!!Though I have Lef Alburt's other book, only after readinig this one did I realize why he is one of the most after sought chess teacher! He deserves it!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great for Tournaments and Improvement in Pattern Recognition.......2006-10-29

I had the opportunity to preview this book when I got my local public library to order Lev Alburt's complete training series. It was so good as a tournament trainer that I just bought it on Amazon. This book conveys many tactical and endgame concepts in puzzle form, many taken from famous games, such as Lasker's double bishop sacrifice. On the left hand side of the page are four problems, and on the right hand side are the solutions with explanations that vary in degrees of extensiveness. Alburt recommends to try to solve these problems quickly and don't worry about getting them correct, because the value in the book is repeatedly going over the problems until your recognition of the patterns the problems contain is automatic. I followed Alburt's advice and noticed a decent improvement in my tactical recognition when I played in a tournament in Chicago and on line. The beauty of this book is that it is truly a "pocket book" so that I was able to do puzzles on the bus and other places of leisure while sitting. :) My only quip is that the commentary on problems varies from extensive to none at all and I would like to see a categorization of problems. The price is also slightly on the high end (but in my opinion worth it) for the amount of material provided.

5 out of 5 stars The best tactical exercise book available.......2006-05-05

I'm not a big fan of Lev Alburt's other works, but this particular book is a real gem.

The size, layout, and selection of chess problems is the best I've ever seen. The book does not fall apart after a lot uf use either. I sometimes wonder if some of the other tactical exercize books were designed intentionally to self-destruct.

The book is smaller than average, and easy to carry around. The board size displayed and text solutions are larger than in most puzzle books and easy to see/read.

Many of the problems are common themes that occur over and over in actual games.

Not all the problems have a solution. Some are trick questions, where the apparent solution fails because of a hidden resource. This makes you look at each position more critically.

The problems are not arranged in any particular order. Some puzzle book authors seem to think we want a clue to the solution before trying to solve them (i.e. arranging problems by tactical theme). This is not one of those.

There are many practical endgame problems included, such as the Lucena technique and Philidor defense (rook and pawn vs rook drawing method).

The solutions are on the opposite page of the problems. This is very convenient. I don't have to look in the back of the book for the solution, and the solution is not staring me in the face while I'm trying to solve the problem. It's a perfect placement.

The solutions have a verbal explanation and most include the players involved. If the actual player to move missed the combination, that is also mentioned.

Most players will find these problems challenging and the book is suitable for any chess player of any rating. If you find all these problems simple, then I'd guess you already went through the book before. The correct solution to many of these problems were missed by grandmasters in an actual game.

I gave my copy of this book to a friend who really wanted it. Now I have buy it again.

The lure of this book's promise starts with the assumption in its title. Possibility--that big, all-encompassing, wide-open-door concept--is an art? Well, who doesn't want to be a skilled artist, whether in the director's chair, the boardroom, on the factory floor, or even just in dealing with life's everyday situations? Becoming an artist, however, requires discipline, and what the authors of The Art of Possibility offer is a set of practices designed to "initiate a new approach to current conditions, based on uncommon assumptions about the nature of the world."

If that sounds a little too airy-fairy for you, don't be put off; this is no mere self-improvement book, with a wimpy mandate to transform its readers into "nicer" people. Instead, it's a collection of illustrations and advice that suggests a way to change your entire outlook on life and, in the process, open up a new realm of possibility. Consider, for example, the practice of "Giving an A," whether to yourself or to others. Not intended as a way to measure someone's performance against standards, this practice instead recognizes that "the player who looks least engaged may be the most committed member of the group," and speaks to their passion rather than their cynicism. It creates possibility in an interaction and does away with power disparities to unite a team in its efforts. Or consider "Being the Board," where instead of defining yourself as a playing piece, or even as the strategist, you see yourself as the framework for the entire game. In this scenario, assigning blame or gaining control becomes futile, while seeking to become an instrument for effective partnerships becomes possible.

Packed with such examples of personal and professional interactions, the book presents complex ideas on perception and recognition in a readable, useable style. The authors' combined, eclectic experience in music and painting (as well as family therapy and executive workshops) infuses their examples with vibrant color and sound. The relevance to corporate situations and relationships is well developed, and they don't rely on dry case studies to do it. Indeed, this book assumes the emotional intelligence and desire to engage of its reader, promising access to the rewards of that door-opening notion--possibility--in return. --S. Ketchum

                              Book Description

                              Download Description

The Art of Possibility offers a set of breakthrough practices for creativity in all human enterprises. This inspirational book is a synthesis of Rosamund Stone Zander's knowledge of cutting-edge psychology and Benjamin Zander's experiences as the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Infused with the energy of their dynamic partnership, the book joins together Ben's extraordinary talent as a mover and shaker, teacher, and communicator with Rosamund's genius for creating innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment. In lively counterpoint, the authors provide us with a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of our lives. The Zanders' deceptively simple practices are based on two premises: that life is composed as a story ("it's all invented") and that, with new definitions, much more is possible than people ordinarily think. The book shifts our perspective with uplifting stories, parables, and anecdotes. From "Giving an A" to the mysterious "Rule Number 6" to "Leading from Any Chair"--the account of Ben's stunning realization that the conductor/leader's power is directly linked to how much greatness he is willing to grant to others--each practice offers an opportunity for personal and organizational transformation.

This book continues to change my life. I loved their key phrases to remember their ideas. I suggested it to many of my teacher friends and people on our board of education - where money is so tight and so many cuts are being made -this book inspires you to the many possibilities you can create.

This book is thought provoking and stimulating. It is not an easy read, but definately gives you the tools to seek new ways of viewing almost any situation in a more positive light. I highly recommend this to anyone who is ready to not to merely think outside of the box, but reshape their box entirely.

5 out of 5 stars No change without leadership.......2007-08-27

There is no change without leadership at all levels. This book is a good introduction into the principles of transformational leadership. Creating Possibilities for others such that they are touched moved and inspired. The leadership theory is based on leading oneself not others and focuses on who you are being not what you are doing. This is not a book about manipulative Machiavellian techniques rather it's about creating free choice for others where they are inspired by the possibility you have created.

5 out of 5 stars A personal growth book for the nearly-jaded.......2007-08-16

I've been reading books for years now that are designed to inspire and lead one toward personal growth in relationships, in the workplace, in life in general. I'm a junkie for this kind of book, and therefore I've become somewhat jaded as well, never really expecting anything new but always hoping. What a delight, therefore, to be utterly surprised by THE ART OF POSSIBILITY. This book delivers! The Zanders' approach is revolutionary, shining real light amongst the plethora of jingoistic motivational books that abound these days. There is nothing self-centered or bumper stickerish or rah-rah cheerleady in this book. It has real depth, it never skims the surface or lets us off the hook. Benjamin is conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Rosamund is a painter and therapist. They bring their stunning creativity and imagination into real life -- their lives -- and show us how we, too, can compose and conduct our lives, paint our future. It's an exciting book, one that I've now read three times and underlined and highlighted and excerpted onto sticky notes for my computer and mirror and calendar. No wonder they are being called on to speak to leading business and professional groups.

I would recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position. It is not only inspiring, but practical. It offers insights into effective communication.
