Book Description
This handsomely illustrated book highlights one of the most important and creative periods in the history of art: a time marked by the appearance of the city states of the Sumerians, the citadel of Troy, the splendid royal tombs at Ur, and the monumental cities at Mohenjodaro and Harappa. The volume examines the cultural achievements of these first urban societies, placing them in a historical context. Topics covered include the emergence of the first city states, the birth of written language, and trade and cultural interconnections between the ancient Near East and outlying areas. More than five hundred works of art, including sculpture, jewelry, vessels, weapons, cylinder seals, and tablets executed in a wide variety of materials such as stone, metal, clay, ivory, and semiprecious stones are included. The insightful texts are written by leading scholars in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoy the Art of the First Cities.......2006-03-22
Wonderful illustrations. Up-tu-date analyses & comments. For amateurs and specialists as well.
Superb.......2005-03-28
This is a superbly illustrated and written book, with photographs of renown artifacts from museums around the world, and even more outstanding essays by relevant scholars. I suspect anyone interested in Ancient Art from the formative stages (3000-2000 BCE) of the world's first civilizations will enjoy reading this book.
Magnificent!.......2005-01-09
A magnificent volume, for those who might be interested in the miriad small and large details pertaining to the earliest artifacts of those primordial history writing civilizations. A great many details as to the History, Physical conditions, Geography, Economics, Foreign relations, Art, Religion, Litterature, Iconography, Archaeology and so on, both textual and visual. A most interesting book for those interested in the cradle of civilisation.

Photo by Brady: A Picture of the Civil War
ASIN: 3791329294 |
Book Description
More than 350 photographs by Mathew Brady and his corps of cameramen, many of them never seen before, make this the most comprehensive collection of Civil War images ever published.
Mathew Brady is arguably the most widely hailed documentarian of America's bloodiest conflict: the Civil War. He and his cameramen created an indelible record of bravery, suffering, and sacrifice. Exhibitions of Brady's photographs helped to introduce Americans to the brutal realities of war, and he was a pioneer in the field of photojournalism by providing his battlefield scenes and portrait photographs to Harper's and other weekly publications of the time for use as woodcuts.
Arranged by battle site and event, each of which is introduced by a brief explanatory essay, the volume offers carefully researched archival information about each image and its photographer. Photographs by Alexander Gardner, Timothy O'Sullivan, and James Gibson are among those included in this thoroughly documented collection.
Caption material includes Library of Congress digital order numbers; order numbers are also given for images from the National Archives. This information helps to make the volume a valuable resource for anyone interested in Civil War history or nineteenth-century photography.
Customer Reviews:
A Nice Pictorial History of the War........2005-04-02
Mathew Brady was called Lincoln's Camera Man, but this photo album is filled with photos from a battery of photographers. It is a nice history in pictures of that time, whoever took them.
These pictures show the devastation of the War. For some reason, though, more of them show dead Confederates. It depicts the war clearly showing some of the multitude killed at Antietam, Gettysburg, the ruins at Harper's Ferry (all places I took my sons to explore a while back). Lincoln is shown at Antietam after the 'bloodiest battle of the Civil War' in October, 1862. Gettysburg, where too many from the South died, occurred in July, 1863.
The pontoon bridges were unusual and clever. The horse and carriages and wagon trains showed how drastically things have changed. Seeing a real ironclad was interesting.
This is a short course in the Civil War for those who want to know what happened; they can see the aspects from a Northerner point of view, as they ravished the South and left parts of it looking like bombed out London or Germany.
A 'Must Have' book for every Civil War library.......2004-05-14
What an valuable tome, Surley one of the most impressive collections of Civil War images ever collected. The introductions to the twenty-one sections are very helpful for appreciating the 400+ haunting Brady photos. I especially enjoyed the Federal Navy section, with photos I had never seen before, although I've read and edited several publications about the Civil War. Included also is a very practical guide to acquiring copies of the photos. In has been ten years since the prolific George Sullivan presented his biography of Mathew Brady. It was worth the wait as we have here an award-winning work that should be in teh history section of every private and public library. Not one of the 450 pages is disappointing.

Good Brother, Bad Brother: The Story of Edwin Booth and John Wilkes Booth
ASIN: 0689857853 |
Book Description
Mathew B. Brady was already a famous photographer by the time the Civil War began. But the war gave Brady something else:
The chance to make a
RECORD OF A
WAR -- this war -- in a way that had never been done before:
WITH TRUE-TO-LIFE PICTURES INSTEAD OF JUST WORDS. He hired field photographers to travel with the troops, equipped them with cameras and wagons filled with supplies, and sent them out with the directive to make a visual record of the war and to show people scenes they could have only read about before.
The pictures the field photographers sent back were
HAUNTING, BEAUTIFUL,
DEVASTATING,
AND TOTALLY UNFORGETTABLE. And thousands of them included the notation "Photo by Brady." Though Brady didn't actually take the photographs, he was the genius behind them. His vision and foresight gave the country images that not only touched the people at the time, but have gone on to leave an indelible mark on the collective memory of this country. And the name of Mathew Brady will always be remembered with them.
In Photo By Brady, Jennifer Armstrong tells the story of the Civil War as seen through the lenses of its recorders. It is a moving and elegant look at the brutal and deadly time.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent addition to the genre.......2006-01-26
Although collections of Matthew Brady's work abound, most are targeted at adults or armchair war historians. The American War Between the States was the FIRST war that civilians could "follow from home" and the first to be photographed. This book brings the war out of dry history books and into harsh reality for young readers. Nice addition to a buff's library as well.

A funny 50th birthday quiz
Q: Is 50 too young to be worried about bladder control problems?
A: Depends.
Q: How can you increase the heart rate of your 50-year-old husband?
A: Tell him you're pregnant.
Here is an outrageous quiz that can ease the pain of turning 50 and provide entertainment for any 50th birthday party. Keep those bifocals handy.
Customer Reviews:
Not exactly the quiz I was expecting . . . ........2007-03-09
This is a funny little Q & A joke book -- with some cute little Q&A jokes/riddles . . . but since it's printed on both the front and back covers, I was expecting, "A Funny Birthday QUIZ."
A quiz normally invites input from the reader, and I was expecting more along the lines of -- quite frankly -- a QUIZ.
Nevertheless, it is a cute little book that would be a good gift for those turning 50 whom like Q&A jokes.
Just don't be expecting a funny birthday QUIZ!!
Laugh OutLoud Funny.......2000-01-30
Not only is this book "laugh outloud funny," it is the perfect "stocking stuffer" gift for all of my baby-boomer friends who turn the big 5-0 this year!
Duller than a law book, with half the chuckles.......1999-12-16
I've read funnier quotes at a post-apocalypse planning meeting. I'd like to believe that as I get closer to 50 (not quite there yet--but soon) my sense of humor is growing more sophisticated. Why then a book filled with humor best appreciated by those with the most juvenile sense of humor? I don't know if the author's name really is Witte, but based upon this title, he should consider changing it to Hackneyed. After finishing this book, you won't be amused, only depressed.
Turning 50 won't be so bad.......1999-11-24
Any true baby boomer will get a kick out of this book for its humor and quotability. Even those of us who haven't hit the big 5-0 have begun to say "You know, 50 ain't that old." This book makes it easier to accept what is now barely middle age.
A funny and insightful book!.......1999-10-31
This is an absolutely delightful book! It is full of wonderful and ironic humor which is both hysterically funny and insightful. The honesty and wisdom of Mr. Witte's observations (posed as a "birthday quiz") are oddly comforting to those of us who are near to either side of "F-Day"(Fifty!). I hope Mr. Witte continues to write in this vein. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
John W. Cones, whose real goal is to stimulate a long-term film industry reform movement, shows how the financial control of the film industry in the hands of the major studios and distributors actually translates into creative control of the industry.
Cones discusses the pros and cons of the debate relating to the industry’s so-called net profit problem and the way in which the distribution deal plays an integral part in that problem. He then breaks down five major film finance/distribution scenarios, explaining various distribution deals and suggesting ways of negotiating distribution.
Critically examining the specific terms of the distribution deal itself, Cones covers gross receipts exclusions, distributor fees, and distribution expenses. He also investigates the various forms of interest, issues of production costs, matters of creative control, and general contractual provisions.
For handy reference, Cones includes an extensive checklist for negotiating any feature film distribution deal. The list deals with distribution fees, distribution expenses, interest, production costs, creative control issues, general contractual provisions, distributor commitments, and the limits of negotiating. His nine appendixes present a "Motion Picture Industry Overview," "Profit Participation Audit Firms," "ADI (Top 50) Market Rankings," an "AFMA Member List, 1992–1993," a "Production-Financing/Distribution Agreement," a "Negative Pickup Distribution Agreement," a "Distribution Rights Acquisition Agreement," a "Distribution Agreement (Rent-a-Distributor Deal)," and a "Foreign Distribution Agreement."
Cones wrote this book for independent producers, executive and associate producers and their representatives, directors, actors, screenwriters, members of talent guilds, distributors, and entertainment, antitrust, and securities attorneys. Securities issuers and dealers, investment bankers, and money finders, investors, and financiers of every sort also will be interested. In addition, Cones suggests and hopes that the book will interest "Congress, their research staff, government regulators at the Internal Revenue Service, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, and law enforcement officials such as the Los Angeles District Attorney and the U.S. Justice Department."
Customer Reviews:
A must-read.......2006-02-27
Though a little dated (not much has changed in the film industry), The Feature Film Distribution Deal is a must-read for every producer and every newly minted entertainment lawyer.
The author, a practising entertainment lawyer) covers typical/standard/boilerplate film industry deal contracts as issued by the big studios/distributors, and explains practically every line/item in them, and the definitions of the many contract terms.
BTW, ALL the terms of these contracts are rigged to screw independent producers out of net profit participaiton profits.
Then the author offers 'counter' negotiating points and the reasoning/arguments behind them.
He does state that success in using these counterproposals/arguments is limited due to the 'balance of power' between big studios and independent producers is tilted heavily in favour of the big studios.
The appendices are four distribution deal contracts. They're well worth the read, too, if only to familiarise oneself with them.
It is NOT a book to read quickly, but one to be read thoughtfully, to absorb and to learn the legal and business concepts in the contracts. The structure of each chapter makes this easy to do.
Encyclopedia of Bad Film Studio Business Practices.......2001-02-19
If you are mystified by "Hollywood accounting," this legal expose outlines over 80 clauses commonly found in feature film distribution contracts that might be considered unconscionable or immoral, revealing the formidible odds facing the "talent" side of the industry. A thorough explanation of why there's no "net" profit, and a sobering dose of reality for any creative person who believes they should be paid for making a good product. The introduction lists the LA DA's Office among those who should read it.

Book Description
This Companion is an essential guide to all aspects of the organ and its music. The early chapters examine the instrument's history and construction, and consider the scientific basis of its sounds, pitch and tuning. Central chapters investigate the practical art of learning and playing, and introduce the complex area of performance practice, while the final section explores the vast repertoire of organ music, by country, focusing on a selection of the most important traditions. The contributors are all experts in their field, making this the most authoritative reference book currently available.
Customer Reviews:
Better than I'd expected.......2005-01-20
The comments from "a reader" (anonymous and pseudonymous reviews should be discouraged as a matter of Amazon.com policy; in non-life-or-death matters like critiques of musicology texts, surely the courage to sign your name is a prerequisite?) indicated a rip-off. In fact this publication turns out to be useful far beyond the confines of Dutch and Central European baroque topics. There can be no argument with complaints about unevenness. One section (the chapter on Austrian / South German baroque composers) is written with genuine panache; another (on Franck, his precursors, and his successors in the Gallo-Belgian romantic repertoire) is almost equally worthwhile; the advice on optimal practice methods for organists is uniformly well-judged; alas, all too many of the other sections read like - and probably were - extracts from humdrum doctoral dissertations.
The treatment of Spanish and Portuguese 16th- and 17th-century organ writing is, at least to the non-specialist writing this review, largely incomprehensible (and where not incomprehensible, is dubious: can it really be true that the "royal trumpet" stops which characterized Iberian organs, and which so well suit 17th-century Iberian "battle music", are an 18th-century invention?). A more obviously encyclopedic approach, such as Julie Anne Sadie employed when she edited Cambridge's COMPANION TO BAROQUE MUSIC, would have been superior to what we have here.
Still, here is one church organist who feels very grateful to this tome's staff-notation passages for having introduced him to valuable pieces by Teutons (the mid-17th-century's J. K. Kerll), Americans (the late-19th-century Dudley Buck), and Englishmen (somebody named Henry Smart, who apparently died in 1879), hitherto mere vaguely-contemplated names, or else, in Smart's case, not even that. Better to treat this COMPANION as a goad to the performer who seeks fresh and agreeable sheet music, rather than as a reference resource.
Only a companion to baroque organs and uneven........1999-08-05
Those who are used to the Oxford series of "Companions" will be surprised to find this Cambridge Companion is not an encyclopedic reference book. It is a collection of articles on a broad range of topics--construction, esthetics, performance technique and the repertoire--with a very uneven level. Some articles address the basics (sit up straight while you are playing) while others assume that you know everything already (off hand references to organs you should know about.) Almost all the organs discussed in any depth are the German-Dutch baroque instruments and their modern replicas, with just a few words on large romantic instruments. In sum, it may be an interesting "read" for the connoisseur, but it isn't very useful as a reference for the interested amateur.

don't make the same mistake.......2006-04-18
Dear prospective owner,
This book is definitely artsy and collagey as per the other descriptions--in what I would describe as a Stevie Nicks-kind of way. That said, it is very helpful for the beginner cardmaker like me.
My only caution if you're stocking up on how-to books is not to make my mistake and also buy the Everything Crafts Create Your Own Greeting Cards (Ed. Courtney Nolan), because 80% of the material in this book appears there as well. Save your $$ and buy this one--it has full color photos throughout.
Great, easy art!.......2004-06-08
I like crafting very much. Greeting cards hold an especially dear place in my heart and I love to make them constantly. Just about everyone I know has received at least one homemade greeting card from me at one time or another. So yes, I'm always on the lookout for new books on the subject. This one, I have to say, is great!
It has innovative projects rnaging from the colorful, really creative ones to subtler, more elegant ones. There really is one for everyone and the instructions are very clear, detailed and, simple to follow. No crafter, regardless of skill, will have any trouble completing any of these cards.
The authors did a great job of writing this book. Also worthy is the creative use of rather unusual materials (for a card at least). I've been working with paper for a long time now and it still helped move some things inside of me which helped me come up with a whole set of new ideas on how to work and what to do. The pictures are great, you'll enjoy them and they'll inspire you to create some new, totally different projects of your own.
This is one book you'll definitely enjoy.
Cards redefined as artistic masterpieces to give or keep.......2004-03-12
The first word that came to mind when I saw the projects in Making Greeting Cards with Creative Materials was "artsy". The next word was "collage". I think those two concepts neatly sum up the style and involvement level you can expect from this multimedia craft book.
Author MaryJo McGraw is clearly an experienced artist who has explored many techniques, but whose first love is obviously the paper arts. Although this is a book on greeting cards, there were a lot of projects that would work on a different scale for other purposes, such as embellishing scrapbooks; and many of them could be frame able art in their own right. The designs and color choices reflect rich, muted tones and multilayers of materials such as fibers, charms, gold leaf, wires, inks, watch pebbles, beads, punches, stamped papers and photos. Often the card shapes and closures are not the standard rectangular format. The processes are carefully explained and illustrated as though to first-timers, but the results will make you look like a terribly sophisticated artist.
If you're hoping for ideas that would make for good quantity mailings such as invitations, be aware that most people would probably not have the time or money to make these cards in bulk: these are complex labors of love that are definitely not suited to mass production. Never once did I read a suggestion that the reader purchase ready-made embellishments or stickers, because the emphasis here is on handcrafting rather than time efficiency. For the crafter who has special, personal sentiments to express however, these are the ideal medium for that individual touch to the recipient.

Good for Beginners.......2004-02-26
This book is an excellent starting place for skill building.
Grandslam.......2002-07-03
I don't know how the woman does it, but MaryJo McGraw has produced another winner. One might think that by the fourth book, her ideas and designs might be repetitive, but McGraw's latest foray into the seemingly overly crowded subject of "greeting cards" shows that the well is still quite full.
The title says it all and the paper artist/craftsperson who is looking to expand their skill and designs they will be pleased with the concepts that McGraw presents in this well illustrated and clearly written guide. She takes you beyond rubber stamps and beyond cute...many of the designs are just downright art but on a smaller canvas. More than a few of the cards are just...well, they are just too cool for words.
If you want to make cards just out of your rubber stamps, don't buy this book. If you want to expand your creative possibilities and make cards out of some very interesting stuff, then you should buy this book.
If you want to make greeting cards that are "oh, so sweet" don't buy this book. If you want to make greeting cards (or adapt the designs for other paper arts projects) that will knock the socks off the recipient then buy this book right now.

Book Description
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind reveals the missing link between wanting success and achieving it!
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to get rich easily, while others are destined for a life of financial struggle? Is the difference found in their education, intelligence, skills, timing, work habits, contacts, luck, or their choice of jobs, businesses, or investments?
The shocking answer is: None of the above!
In his groundbreaking Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, T. Harv Eker states: "Give me five minutes, and I can predict your financial future for the rest of your life!" Eker does this by identifying your "money and success blueprint." We all have a personal money blueprint ingrained in our subconscious minds, and it is this blueprint, more than anything, that will determine our financial lives. You can know everything about marketing, sales, negotiations, stocks, real estate, and the world of finance, but if your money blueprint is not set for a high level of success, you will never have a lot of money—and if somehow you do, you will most likely lose it! The good news is that now you can actually reset your money blueprint to create natural and automatic success.
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind is two books in one. Part I explains how your money blueprint works. Through Eker's rare combination of street smarts, humor, and heart, you will learn how your childhood influences have shaped your financial destiny. You will also learn how to identify your own money blueprint and "revise" it to not only create success but, more important, to keep and continually grow it.
In Part II you will be introduced to seventeen "Wealth Files," which describe exactly how rich people think and act differently than most poor and middle-class people. Each Wealth File includes action steps for you to practice in the real world in order to dramatically increase your income and accumulate wealth.
If you are not doing as well financially as you would like, you will have to change your money blueprint. Unfortunately your current money blueprint will tend to stay with you for the rest of your life, unless you identify and revise it, and that's exactly what you will do with the help of this extraordinary book. According to T. Harv Eker, it's simple. If you think like rich people think and do what rich people do, chances are you'll get rich too!

Mind Over Matter.......2007-10-01
The key to achieving any goal is to mentally determine that it can be done and that you will accomplish it. This book will help you develop the mentality that will increase your odds of gaining wealth. That quest starts out with a bit of house cleaning. The author first helps you to unlearn all of the bad habits that are holding you back financially. After that foundation is laid, he goes on to layout his philosophies the mind set needed to get rich.
I was uncomfortable with his references to the "universe." He seems to use this term in place of God. I've never heard people speak in that way. Otherwise it is a great read.
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind .......2007-09-28
Harv Eker has hit the "nail on the head" with this exciting, upbeat, and challenging "How to" for those of us that want to break out of the poor mentality. I have read many books on this subject but Harv brings new insights into a well writen about arena. He has "passion" about his ideas and suggestions for mastering the inner game of Wealth. My wife and I have both read this book and go back and re-read many time. Good STUFF!!
Very Interesting.......2007-09-19
This book is not about how to invest in the market or any get rich quick scheme. It is a holistic approach to how successful people think and do. Although the topic is about having money, it first questions how you feel about having money. The first part is quite interesting as it gives various examples of how, through conditioning, we have opinions which have been formed at an early age, about money. There are NLP ties throughout this book.
Then Eker introduces 17 "wealth files" which each have various strategies, illustrations and comparisons for those that earn money and those who don't. The message is still clear that you must go and take action as nothing is going to simply fall into your lap. That being said, it begins with the mindset first.
This book is well written, and is a fast read. It is also equipped with many great one liner's, metaphors and stories.

You get to say how it will go..........2007-09-11
This is an awesome read for anyone. It is especially poignant for those who know they have what it takes to make it big; but continue to not master whatever it is that they need to get there. These ideas and concepts can be applied to life; not just creating wealth. T. Harve Eker does a great job of relating to his audience in easy going everyday terminology.
I have been quoting this book since the very first day I listen to the CD. This is a well done first rate book; buy it for your Dad, your Mom, your Brother, Sister; anyone that you care about.
Good material and an easy read.......2007-09-05
T Harv presents many time honored principles about how your way of thinking affects the reality you live. Who can argue with the idea that having a positive attitude about money (or anything else) is a good thing? He gets to the root of the problem with his idea of the "Money Blueprint" and then goes on to inform of various other ways we sabotage our path to wealth. The hit-yourself-in-the-forehead-and-declare-that "I could have had a V-8" (OK OK ... "I have a millionaire mind!") is a little hokey but it does reinforce the idea presented and encourages the reader to DO SOMETHING.
Focusing primarily on money is one of the limitations of this and many other similar books ... there is a lot more to our quality of life than money. But, since money impacts so many aspects of our lives, it's something we all have to deal with. The book has some great ideas, many useful quotes and one liners about how to think "better" about money and is easy to read.
Definitely worth the effort in any event.
