Book Description
Banks Violette (b. 1973) has been called the "Grown-Up Goth." Whitney Museum of American Art curator Chrissie Isles, at the time of the 2004 Whitney Biennial, described his work as embodying "the dark side of the heavy-metal American dream." This book, which accompanies an exhibition at the Whitney, presents a new multi-media sculptural installation by Violette that, with a musical component, explores the central concerns of his work in a complete, immersive environment.
This new work, Untitled, revolves around an idea of complicity between the artist, his collaborator the Black Metal musician Snorre Ruch, and the audience interacting with the piece. Cast in salt, the material surface of the piece is alternately glittery and matte, suggesting both the living and the dead. Recorded in Dolby surround sound and activated by motion detectors, the music becomes a theatrical element in orienting the viewer in the installation, swelling louder according to proximity.

Book Description
It has been called one of the nation's most livable regions, ranked among the best managed cities in America, hailed as a top spot to work, and favored as a great place to do business, enjoy the arts, pursue outdoor recreation, and make one's home. Indeed, years of cooperative urban planning between developers and those interested in ecology and habitability have transformed Portland from a provincial western city into an exemplary American metropolis. Its thriving downtown, its strong neighborhoods, and its pioneering efforts at local management have brought a steady procession of journalists, scholars, and civic leaders to investigate the "Portland style" that values dialogue and consensus, treats politics as a civic duty, and assumes that it is possible to work toward public good.
Probing behind the press clippings, acclaimed urban historian Carl Abbott examines the character of contemporary Portland--its people, politics, and public life--and the region's history and geography in order to discover how Portland has achieved its reputation as one of the most progressive and livable cities in the United States and to determine whether typical pressures of urban growth are pushing Portland back toward the national norm.
In Greater Portland, Abbott argues that the city cannot be understood without reference to its place. Its rivers, hills, and broader regional setting have shaped the economy and the cityscape. Portlanders are Oregonians, Northwesteners, Cascadians; they value their city as much for where it is as for what it is, and this powerful sense of place nurtures a distinctive civic culture. Tracing the ways in which Portlanders have talked and thought about their city, Abbott reveals the tensions between their diverse visions of the future and plans for development.
Most citizens of Portland desire a balance between continuity and change, one that supports urban progress but actively monitors its effects on the region's expansive green space and on the community's culture. This strong civic participation in city planning and politics is what gives greater Portland its unique character, a positive setting for class integration, neighborhood revitalization, and civic values. The result, Abbott confirms, is a region whose unique initiatives remain a model of American urban planning.

From the wild and wacky world of a favorite funnyman, a dozen truer-than-life tales of tailgating on the Jersey Tumpike, infuriating infants, and other everyday catastrophes, defeats, and humiliations that are the familiar fate of Americans everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
A Fistful of Fig Newtons.......2007-01-11
Buy all of Jean Shepard's book and settle down to smiling, laughing and rolling around with a belly laugh. Jean Shepard captures pre-television life with all of the hilarious anecdotes of the time and his work brightens even the darkest of days...read them all!
Everybody likes Fig Newtons.......2002-11-23
12 hilarious stories about common catastrophes, humiliating experiences, picking on toddlers and tailgating on the Jersey Turnpike. A testimonial for virtually every teen growing up in America today.
Not as good as Shepherd's first two books, but entertaining nonetheless.
Not his best, but still better than anybody else........2000-02-13
Four stars out of five? By what standard? Well, anything by Shepherd is a five star read, but when judged against "In God We Trust" and "Wanda Hickey", "A Fistful of Fig Newtons" doesn't quite rise to his own very high standards. Still, don't let this turn you off to this fine little book. While the stories (some are really essays) are not as consistantly good as some of his earlier efforts, "Lost at C" is as good (and funny!) a short story as has ever been written. All of us can identify with the poor slobs stuck in the back row of the classroom, (the "alphabetical ghetto") struggling to comprehend algebra. "The Whole Fun Cataloge of 1929" is a brilliant essay which nails American culture better than any Harvard sociologist ever has. Jean illustrated this book with his own excellent and charming line drawings...another talent not many people knew Jean had. So, for dedicated Shep fans, by all means read "Fig Newtons", and for anyone interested in a funny book, you won't be dissapointed.
Good bye, Indiana. Hello, New Jersey........1998-01-05
Only the fertile mind of humorist Jean Shepherd could have thought of it. His Hoosier alter ego Ralph Parker reminisces on past events in his life once again, but this time against the backdrop of a rush-hour traffic jam in the famed Lincoln Tunnel connecting New York and New Jersey. In "A Fistful of Fig Newtons", Ralph's memories are not limited to any particular period in his life, as was the case with "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash" (childhood) and "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories: And Other Disasters" (adolescence). Rather, he spans a wider field including summer camp, his first day of high school, Army life, and college. The reader will also enjoy a "critique" of the legendary Johnson Smith novelty catalog plus an amusing look at New Jersey. While still very witty and entertaining so as to earn a 9, "A Fistful of Fig Newtons" is more caustic and saltier than Shepherd's previous two books, mainly when Ralph's adult life is profiled. This book holds its own well as a work by a master satirist. Coming soon, my review of the fourth and last installment in the "tetralogy" of Shepherd books: "The Ferrari in the Bedroom".

Virtually everyone will learn from this clearly written, fully illustrated instructional book.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Poker Book I Own.......2006-12-27
This is actually the second book of Mr. Steiner's I've read. The first was his introduction to economics textbook at college.
I'm not surprised other people found the book valuable as well, because of the rich quality of the writing, and the focus on the specific goals of the book - the local, amateur, high stakes game. However, I've got a strong academic background which includes a Master's Degree in Finance, so the academic, logical approach was very welcome to me.
The quality of the detailed instruction is unusually high. Mr. Steiner puts most of his most important conclusions in a context that dramatically increases the value of the lesson.
Despite Mr. Steiner's academic background, his poker book is unsually easy to read, and I enjoyed it. I particularly liked his anecdotes about specific events that had happened to him either in local games, or when he was in the military.
In short, the author is the kind of guy with whom you know you'd enjoy playing cards, even if you lost a few dollars doing it.
Thoroughly enjoyable, Good to have in your Poker Library.......2006-12-01
This book is for people who like to play Poker for "medium" stakes (not nickel-dime-quarter). It's an enjoyable read.
not bad.......2005-07-13
its a good book, starts off pretty dry and relatively simplistic but gets better after the tells section. The characters he uses help and remind you of people you find in your average game. the only problem is 1/3 of the example hands he uses end in you or your opponent getting quads... considering this book is based on a lot of probability that doesnt really work out. a decent read, worth looking over
A Real Value. .......2004-10-24
This is a very good book that is quite well written; however, since it is from 1996, it's rather dated. The author, of course, does not make any mention of the internet which is the vehicle through which most of us play poker nowadays. He also could not have foreseen the extraordinary success that amateurs have had against professionals which is why he stated that amateurs usually lose their money at the World Series of Poker. In the last two years Greg Reimer and Chris Moneymaker thoroughly disproved such a notion. Yet the author should not be blamed for historical eventualities he could not anticipate. He has written a highly functional and readable guide for the weekly, or Thursday night, poker game. It's ideal for beginners as his explanations of the game (and its many variations) are clear and concise. His knowledge of strategy and tactics is notable. A big plus at the end is the annotated bibliography which I read a couple of times.
Excellent for Serious Home Games.......2004-08-18
This book is unique in that it covers strategy and tactics for play in
serious home games instead of a casino or online. (Some differences
are the blind/ante structure, the number of players, and how many
players enter each pot.)
An excellent selling point is that it covers all of the serious poker
formats: Hold'em, Omaha, 7 Card Stud, 5 Card Draw, and 5 Card Stud.
(The section on Draw is quite good!) It includes hi/lo versions of
some of these games, including with a declare. It also covers limit,
no-limit, and pot-limit. It does not cover any of the crazy or
wildcard games that are popular in nickel-ante home games.
The included example/problems are an excellent way to learn. Each is
answered and accompanied by a good explanation. Various player
stereotypes are used throughout the book to stage the problems. The
stereotypes are unfortunately one-dimensional, but do remind the
reader to play the player instead of just your cards.
If you play serious home games, this book can easily suffice as your
only poker book. If you go to a casino or play online, this book will
help plenty versus no book at all.

From the school of unemotional investing comes the classic How to Make Money in Stocks, by Wall Street analyst and publisher William O'Neil. Readers new to securities will find it an excellent primer, one that relies on time-honored indicators such as quarterly earnings, market capitalization, and daily indexes. O'Neil's study of winning stocks stretches back to the 1960s, and he shares his insights here, describing what characterizes a growth stock, when to cut your losses (at 7 or 8 percent, no more), and how to spot a market top.
The techniques in How to Make Money in Stocks are hardly revolutionary, but therein lies their strength, as O'Neil claims his is "a winning system in good times or bad." Investors interested in Net stocks might be disappointed--the author's first rule is that a company must show a pattern of growing profits, which disqualifies many dot coms. (Try Rule Breakers, Rule Makers for a different take.) O'Neil's approach to stocks is, above all, rational, and he pays little heed to market hype.
Those new to investing would do well to read this book before embarking, and even more seasoned traders may find How to Make Money in Stocks a refreshing return to basics. Markets may swing bull and bear, but O'Neil promises to stand firm. --Demian McLean
Book Description
THE BUSINESSWEEK, USA TODAY, AND WALL STREET JOURNAL BUSINESS BESTSELLER!
The bestselling guide to buying stocks, from the founder of Investor's Business Dailynow completely revised and updated
When it was first published, How to Make Money in Stocks hit the investing world like a jolt, providing readers with the first in-depth explanation of William J. O'Neil's innovative CAN SLIM investing method. Five years later, O'Neil, founder for the industry icon Investor's Business Daily, revised his classic text and provided readers with a newer glimpse on how the average investor can make money in the equities market.
This third edition of How to Make Money in Stocks has been revised and updated with new chapters designed to help investors increase their performance. New discussions include:
- Greater clarification of the key CAN SLIM investment strategy
- Expanded analysis of the general market from the top of year 2000 to the market bottom of 2001
- New models of the greatest stock market winners that provide more basis for the ongoing effectiveness and superior performance of the CAN SLIM strategy
- Fresh stock charts featured in two colors for easier analysis of trends
- And an invaluable guide on how to maximize both Investor's Business Daily and www.investors.com to find winning stocks
Like his international bestselling 24 Essential Lessons for Investment Success, which stayed on international business bestseller lists for close to 6 months in 2000, How to Make Money in Stocks is the best reference for the individual investor in how to stay afloat and ahead in the rocky and volatile equities markets of the 21st century.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but not great.......2007-09-13
I'm new to investing but have read 7 books in the last couple of months on investing and financial statement analysis. These other books (the intelligent investor etc.) are more focused on value investing and tend to dissuade from considering stocks at all time highs. So it was interesting to read a different approach and this book would certainly make me consider looking at more growth stocks. It was also good to get some basics on chart interpretation which I think will prove useful. The downside is that the book (like all his books from looking at other reviews) focuses too much on IBD his website/newspaper, also the explanations for interpreting the charts was not really thorough enough, also a lot of the charts that he advised not to buy on did not look all that dissimilar in places to charts that he advised were good buys - its easy to go back in hindsight on the ones that didn't take off in price and pick holes into why they didn't.
Also his guide to selling at 7% to 8% below your buy price seems a bit extreme - maybe this is just for high risk growth stock buys but in general given the nature of the market most stock fluctuate far more and could be down 8% over a week to recover to the same of higher level the following week. If you sold every time as he suggests you'd constantly be selling and trying to find new stocks to buy.
He seemingly derides the value investing concept which is odd as some of the best investors of all time followed this approach - Buffett & Graham and their disciples being the obvious ones. Overall an interesting read for a different perspective and introduction to chart interpretation.
Study This Book.......2007-09-08
This book is very easy and most interesting to read. The author, Wm. O'Neil is the founder of Investor Business Daily newspaper, which I have always considered the best financial newspaper.
If you are willing to "study" and learn rather than just read this book, You will make money in stocks.
I use this book and Jim Cramer's 'Real money' and 'Mad Money' books daily (almost like text books) to study, learn and apply what I learn.
Hybrid Investing 101.......2007-07-27
An excellent book on how to use both fundamental and technical analysis together to produce big profits. William J O neal is a great author.
Wish I read this 10 years ago.......2007-06-08
Great book. Sound concepts that work. Yes, I subscribe to the paper (IBD) and use his rules. I'm up over 30% in a solid bull market over the last 4 months without being fully invested. When the market pulls back, my stocks also pull back, but when the market is up, my stocks tend to go up hard.
I find that I do better when I pyramid up after a bounce off the 50-day rather than every 2% or round number like promoted by Darvas. It's a good book worth underlining and scribbling all over the margins.
No get-rich-quick scheme - Mastering the markets requires intellect and discipline.......2007-05-23
William J. O'Neal reveals the secrets of the CANSLIM formula that has allowed the IBD 100 to outperform the S&P 500 year after year. Mr. O'Neal makes it clear - if you want to really make money in the stock market, you can - but it's going to take work. There is no get-rich-quick system: Mastering the markets requires intelligence and dedication. I fully believe in the CANSLIM principles and I am an Investor's Business Daily subscriber. IBD and this book have made me a lot of money. But on the downside (preventing a perfect 5-star rating), this book is rather dry. I had to read most sections several times to fully absorb the information, but it was worth it!
