    Book Description

Beyond Vision is the first English-language collection of essays on art by Pavel Florensky (1882–1937), Russian philosopher, priest, linguist, scientist, mathematician – and art historian. In addition to seven essays by Florensky, the book includes a biographical introduction and an examination of Florensky’s contribution as an art historian by Nicoletta Misler. Beyond Vision reveals Florensky’s fundamental attitudes to the vital questions of construction, composition, chronology, function and destination in the fields of painting, sculpture and design. His reputation as a theologian and philosopher is already established in the English-speaking world, but this first collection in English of his art essays (translated by Wendy Salmond) will be a revelation to those in the field.Pavel Florensky was a true polymath: trained in mathematics and philosophy at Moscow University, he rejected a scholarship in advanced mathematics in order to study theology at the Moscow Theological Academy. He was also an expert linguist, scientist and art historian. A victim of the Soviet government’s animosity towards religion, he was condemned to a Siberian labor camp in 1933 where he continued his work under increasingly difficult circumstances. He was executed in 1937.

Smith and Doe, the anonymous authors of What Men Don't Want Women to Know, are at it again! This time they explore the vulgar, absurd, and uncivilized facets of temptation and ask: just how sick and twisted are your personal ethics? For one million dollars, would you eat a human foot (with the bone removed)? If nobody ever knew, would you have wild sex with your teenage baby-sitter?For $7.5 million, would you allow your mate to be kidnapped and held prisoner for one year with only the most basic amenities (no physical or sexual harm will come to them)? If you had to pick one, would you rather have your child born with a genetic birth defect that causes one of his legs to be half the size of the other, or have your child born in perfect health, but twenty other children will be born with the defect? For $12,500, would you take a bite out of the urinal puck in a public bathroom?Dare to answer Smith and Doe's shocking, depraved, despicable questions honestly....no one will ever know.

4 out of 5 stars A Horrible Book for Horrible People (I guess that means I'm horrible).......2006-09-18

Okay, the title pretty much sums up this review in a way. Most of the questions are truly horrific. Take this one:

$1,000,000: Dig up the grave site and such the marrow out of one of the dead person's bones. (Smith or Doe must witness the sucking and confirm the bone is empty -- only then will the money be wired into your account)

I wouldn't do it for $10 million. Yet 8% of the respondents did, indeed, say yes. There's only one question in the book that NOBODY said yes to. Just one. Imagine it, for I won't spoil it here. There are some with SHOCKINGLY high percentages (well above 80%) and some of the jot of this book comes from actually seeing what people will do for a buck (or million).

It's a great mental exercise book and you can learn a great deal about your friends. In fact, more than you'd like to know.

4 out of 5 stars Fun book to bring out at Parties!.......2006-09-09

I like this book a lot. Warning: they REALLY are horrible questions!! Its lots of fun though. Bring this out at parties, or when you have some friends over and i guarantee it will be a hit!

4 out of 5 stars How twisted are you?.......2006-08-02

If you are into dark comedy and the macabre, appreciate twisted, foul humor sometimes considered obscene (along the lines of South Park, George Carlin, Drawn Together, Wonder Showzen, Howard Stern and others), you'll probably have fun pondering some of these hypothetical questions disguised as moral dilemmas.
Yes, there is something for everyone, levels of depravity that surely will tickle any individual's icky bone, no matter their "thing." Some may need to look away from certain pages not wanting to see sentences whose outcomes are too gross to even comprehend.
It's like "Would You Rather" for an underground freak society.
But how many times can you read a question and think over possibilities that'll never happen before it's passe'?
Maybe a couple times at a few gatherings, max, then it's old.
Good for some gross-outs and guffaws, then sell it to someone else.

1 out of 5 stars The Horrible book of horrible questions.......2006-07-06

I was rather dissapointed with this book. While parts in it were funny, there wasn't very many. I don't advise you to waste your money on it. If you know someone that has it, I suggest you borrow it from them, or your library if it has it. Some questions will make you cringe, while others (most) will just make you wish you hadn't bought the book.

This book is for everyone except the weak-minded who also have weak stomachs. As for the stong-minded with weak stomachs or vice versa, it's hard to say. However, I think it's great. It has all kind of really hard decisions that range from simple dilimas to really tough pretty much lose lose ones. If you like talking about crazy scenarios and choices (as do I and my friends: you know who you are), then you will like this book. For example, would you rather spend a little bit of money on a book that is entertaining and fun, OR would you rather spend the same amount of money on going out to a lunch considering that in the future you will forget what ever you ate days from now and you could have just eaten rice instead, while the book will last on and on and can be shared over and over. Keep thinking...

child's book was at times a revelation, lyric, poetic, unsettling, intelligent.

5 out of 5 stars Scary accurate for me!.......2007-08-11

I started piano at the age of almost 5, and had 11 subsequent years of lessons. Alongside, I played 2 yrs of violin, followed by 3 yrs of flute, and found my love between the summer of 8th and 9th grade on the oboe. I still occasionally play piano, flute and oboe today, and my 9 year old daughter is now playing my violin. What I found interesting about this book is it really seemed so accurate, given my family history! My brother, who didn't start piano until 9 yrs of age, is a far more accomplished pianist than I am, even though I took more years of lessons. My daughter has accomplished in 2 years what it took me over 4 years to do because she started when she was older. This book speaks strongly about delaying the start of piano lessons, and based on my experiences, I would have to concur.

The scary chapter for me was about the oboe. They STRONGLY discourage a child from playing it, and say it's a self selecting instrument at about the age of 14. EXACTLY ACCURATE for me. They say stubborn, tight lipped children do best; socially, oboists largely keep to themselves. Right on the money, in my experience. Now that I'm helping my children select their instruments, it's been very helpful to read th is book again and again. I highly recommend this one!

4 out of 5 stars presents a good method for selecting an instrument.......2007-04-24

This is an interesting guide. I never gave much thought to personality factoring into instrument choice, and the authors make this a primary consideration. The book has a checklist to gauge your child's personality, although I found it tricky to pick between traits such as academic or creative, serious or fun seeking. My children behave differently according to circumstances, and this type of black and white labeling was a challenge for me. Nevertheless, I found it extremely helpful to follow the exercises and think about personality, physical aspects, and academic interests. According to the book, the French Horn is better for thin to medium lipped children, while the trombone has a larger mouthpiece and is easier for bigger lips to blow. The piano may not be good for extremely social kids, as it takes many years before they can play in an ensemble. These are good things to factor in when making this important decision.

The authors believe that a child should be reading fluently and doing basic math operations before taking up an instrument. Obviously, this means that they do not advocate having a preschool child take up an instrument. Their idea is that kids should be exposed to music early on, but not attempt serious study until age 7, 8, or later. There is discourse relating to how intense the requirement for parental involvement in Suzuki style lessons, though the book does not actaully come out as overtly Suzuki bashing.

The authors also state that a child may give up after a short time or a few years if the instrument is not the correct match. Their message is that the proper instrument will provide a lifelong hobby or career.

4 out of 5 stars Provides good questions to ask.......2005-07-16

The authors started with "why do so many kids give up music?" They concluded that it was usually because the kids started with the wrong instrument. For example, some people have a difficult time doing two or more things at once. So piano might not be the best choice. Somebody quiet and soft-spoken might not be best fitted for trumpet. Somebody small might not be the best fit for a tuba.
You might not agree with all their conclusions, but it does give a nice, systematic framework to ask questions and consider answers for yourself and kids.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide for the uncertain child or parent.......2006-03-17

When you want your child to learn an instrument, but don't know which one, first ask your child. Sometimes they know exactly what they want to play! Often they don't know, or want to play many instruments, and this book can be a useful guide in helping them choose.

The authors take into account the physical aspects of each instrument (e.g. trumpet takes a great deal of physical energy to play) as well as personality issues (e.g. a "daydreamer" will tend to be happier playing flute or harp).

As a beginning band teacher, I have used this book for years to guide students to the "right" instrument. It's not foolproof--if a child is determined to play saxophone, all the persuasion in the world won't change their minds! But for many kids, knowing why they might prefer one instrument over another can help them make a decision.

The best advice this book has is to narrow the list down to a few choices, then take your child to a music store and let them try the instruments before deciding. Most music stores are happy to do this, as it increases their chance of a sale. A child will usually find one instrument more comfortable to play thatn the others, and will feel more confident about their decision.

5 out of 5 stars The parent's guide to foolproof instrument-picking.......2003-07-18

As parents, we generally encourage our children to either a., learn to play the piano, or b., learn to play the same instrument that we did as children. Shaky strategies, but then parents don't have much help in this regard. This book is the help we've been looking for. Clearly organized and lucidly written, this book helps a parent match instrument to child based on common-sense criteria. Based on a long career working with children and instruments, the author shows you how to choose an instrument that suits your child's physique, personality, social style and intellect. The book completely takes the mystery out of choosing an instrument for your child, and prepares you to make this important (and expensive!) decision with confidence. At our house, we're two-for-two choosing instruments for our daughters. Thanks to this book, they practice without being asked and love their instruments--because they picked the right ones!

1 out of 5 stars The premise of this book is completely false!!!.......2003-06-29

This book uses a completely false premise assuming that a child gave up music because he had chosen the wrong instrument when in fact he probably had a bad teacher (there are many ways, reasons why a teacher could be a bad teacher!)

VERY DANGEROUS BOOK TOO AS IT COULD CONVINCE YOU, AFTER SOME TIME, THAT THIS FALSE PREMISE IS TRUE!

IT COULD EVEN CONVINCE YOU FURTHER TO CHANGE TO A CHEAPER INSTRUMENT IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO BUY A MORE EXPENSIVE INSTRUMENT THAT YOUR CHILD WOULD LIKE TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY.

5 out of 5 stars Before you buy piano lessons, read this book!.......2000-10-21

_The right instrument for your child_ (together its companion book for adults, _You can make music!_, now sadly out of print) has a very simple premise: if you had music lessons as a child, and gave up because you were "no good at music", the real reason is not that you were tone-deaf, or lacked talent, or whatever else you were told, but that you were made to play the wrong instrument, or the right instrument at the wrong time.

This book says that almost all children have it in them to play an instrument, but the instrument must be chosen to suit the child.

That is obvious, you may say. It is easy to see that a shy, introverted child is never going to succeed on the trumpet. But it is less obvious that a child with poor eyesight is going to have difficulty with the piano, because its notation requires you to read notes for up to ten fingers, in two different notations, all at once. And less obvious still that a child who is easily discouraged should not attempt classical guitar, whose music is as hard to read as it is to play.

Ben-Tovim and Boyd go beyond the anecdotal and provide a comprehensive way to match the instrument to the child: Can the child cope with the physical demands of playing the instrument? The mental demands? And does the character of the instrument, and the sort of music you can play on it, match the child's personality? They also take age into account, because all instruments are built for adults, and some are just too big for younger children: their arms aren't long enough, or their hands aren't wide enough. (Only violin, cello and guitar come in small sizes.)

This is not a stuffy book. It does cover all of the orchestral instruments, but recognizes that some children will be happier in a band or a rock group or a folk group, than they ever would be in an orchestra. And that some children don't want to play music in a group at all, but alone.

The coverage is comprehensive, even extending to instruments such as oboe and French horn, that are (in the book's words), 'self-selecting': they are so difficult that only children who absolutely know that that is what they want to play, will choose them. The book's coverage of these instruments is, I suppose, more for the benefit of mystified parents than anything else.

Many music schools insist that one size fits all. My local music school, for example, insists that children will play the recorder for a year or two and then move to piano. But to a robust 11-year-old with lots of spare energy, even a few months of recorder lessons are likely to be torture. (You have to whisper into a recorder: blow hard, and it just squawks.) The same energetic child might be very happy playing cornet or trumpet.

The authors take the opposite view: _no_ size fits all.

This is also a practical book. Apartment-dwellers have to be able to practice without driving the neighbors mad. Few ordinary family budgets will stretch to a bassoon or a harp. A baritone horn player needs to have a brass band close by. And so on. The authors take these realities into account as well.

First published 15 years ago, this book deserves to be still in print, because it really does deliver on the promise in its title. It puts in your hands the information that will allow you, together with your child, to unlock his or her musical potential with the right musical instrument.

2 out of 5 stars What's Up with this guide??!!.......2005-04-07

What is up with the guides lately? Can they NOT get a walkthrough correctly?!IF you want to get almost everything in the game this is NOT the guide for you! Many errors! It tells you to go west when you should go east in many places. Also leaves you hanging in areas where you NEED detailed help.Had to call the Nintendo help line so many times for certain areas of the walkthrough. Mind you I played the game more than 1/4th without a guide.SAVE YOUR MONEY and go print a walkthrough from gamefaqs.comI am surprised because most Brady guides are good. This one will have you walking around in circles!I am ordering the OFFICIAL NINTENDO guide and hoping it will be better for the Oracle Of Seasons part.Nowadays you take a chance ordering game guides :( Even one guide I had ordered from Nintendo was so wrong I had to call them and give them ALL the corrections.Such sloppy work nowadays. DISGUSTING! And yet they want to make money doing these things. HA!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the pocket Six Sigma tool guides.......2007-05-26

This text is simply the best of the various pocket Six Sigma tool guides currently available in the marketplace. Although this book is a quick reference guide as the subtitle suggests, there is enough substance here for it to walk on legs and provide learning material for those readers already familiar with basic quality concepts. Quite honestly, I am not sure how the authors arrived at the "Nearly 100 Tools" portion of the subtitle, because the tools presented here can be numbered in various ways. However, this aspect really does not matter. What matters is that all of the major Six Sigma tools are presented with a lot of nice diagrams, graphs, and other figures to give the reader a good sense of the fundamentals of any given tool. These well-encapsulated nuggets of information should serve as excellent memory joggers for some, and good starting points for those needing additional detail available in other texts or online resources. Especially helpful are the numerous brief "tips" sections throughout that point novices in the right direction. Note that the organization of the book might not be well suited for some, because it is not ordered according to the customary steps of the DMAIC process. To some degree, the first chapter points to various sections of the book during its cursory walkthrough of the DMAIC process, although the street signs are not very well planned. Despite some minor flaws, this book serves its purpose well.
