Book Description
During the early days of the Second World War, the Catalan painter Joan Miro created a startling series of twenty-three gouaches, his Constellations, works redolent with the nightmare of contemporary events. In 1958 the French poet Andre Breton composed his own "Constellations," a set of hermetic prose poems meant to "illustrate"-that is, not simply to shed light on, but to lend luster to-Miro's paintings, and to resume a peripatetic dialogue about exile. In "Constellations of Miro, Breton" Paul Hammond unravels some of the mysteries of the call-and-response of these two Surrealists by reading the pictures against the poetry, the poetry against the pictures, and both against the madness of a history that none of us has left that far behind.
Featured in this edition are reproductions of the complete series of Joan Miro's Constellations and a translation of Andre Breton's "proses paralleles." Also included is Andre Breton's essay, "Constellations of Joan Miro," as well as documentary illustrations and photographs.
About the Author
Paul Hammond is the author of Marvellous Melies, "French Undressing, Upon the Pun: Dual Meaning in Words and Pictures (with Patrick Hughes), and a monograph on Luis Bunuel's L'Age d'or. He is the editor and translator of The Shadow and Its Shadow:Surrealist Writings on the Cinema (a new edition published by City Lights Books in Fall 2000), and the coeditor, with Ian Breakwell, of Seeing in the Dark: A Compendium of Cinemagoing and Brought to Book: The Balance of Books and Life. His translations include Whatever by Michel Houellebecq and The Virgin of the Hitmen by Fernando Vallejo.
Customer Reviews:
Unreadable!.......2002-09-12
I could not make it through the first chapter of this book. I am not an English teacher, but the run-on sentences and atrocious sentence structure drove me crazy! The author tries to provide a political context for the Constellations, both paintings and poetry. However, he jumps from year to year and place to place without transition. I found this extremely confusing and also incomplete. I was also disappointed in the black and white illustrations. I don't think the paintings can be appreciated at all in this book. Don't buy it!

Book Description
Norwegian "black metal" music was born in the late 1980s as a reaction against the fact that heavy metal music had become mainstream. In Black Low, the organized chaos of Bjarne Melgaard's "trash art" or "slacker art" mines the themes and visual culture of this music to focus on ideas of suicide as a philosophical question.

Book Description
"Andrea Fogli's drawings are like poetic gifts for the eyes that give us something we can only experience on the surface of the paper." The 106 fantastical drawings collected here, made between 2000 and 2006, constitute an intimate diary of this Italian artist's conscious and unconscious "shadows."

Book Description
Having made a name for himself in the Roman art scene of the early 1960s, Jannis Kounellis resurfaced, with extraordinary intuition and creative force, in the Arte Povera movement--the first Italian art movement to be recognized on an international level. Using materials that were initially considered unusual, such as wool, coal, live animals, plants, and theatrical sets, and endowed with a keen sixth sense, Kounellis worked to eliminated the ideological boundary that separates life from art, ethics from aesthetics, creation from production, the social and the political from the individual and the anarchic. Kounellis's intense artistic odyssey, his more than four decades of fervent and impassioned activity, is here richly illustrated on the occasion of his first large-scale exhibition in Belgium.

Book Description
Get Your War On is the comic that became a popular sensation for waking America up and being brave enough to make people think--and laugh--in the months following 9/11. Now, David Rees returns to do it once again--just in time for the most anticipated election in years. He's taking on the Bush Doctrine, Operation Iraqi Freedom, the war in Afghanistan, tax cuts, the 2004 campaign--and much, much more!
Customer Reviews:
pure cynicism, only funny in a juvenile way........2007-08-22
It still makes me wonder how people, that have never had to defend their country, can be so swarmy about a horrific, vicious enemy like the jihadists and islamo-terrorists that have been trying to kill us in creative ways for over a generation. So many americans do not know the importance of defending oneself.
These cartoons are merely simple put-downs of the present admistration in a cynical, paranoid way - which is rather an easy thing thing to, I might add.. Much easier than protecting the country from finatical terrorists.
The writers of this book hate Bush so bad, that they cannot imagine they have become a fifth column in conjunction with our enemies' propaganda. They cant even imagine that there is an enemy. They have been in denial from the inception of this war on terror. The authors are profiting from the war, in either case.
This cartoon book is just another way of reversing reality and trying make it look funny... similar to Hollywood's position on the war - deny, change the focus, blame america, blame Bush.
...and I don't buy it.
I wouldn't buy this book either.
A merciless mockery of post-9/11 America.......2006-01-25
After completing a tour of duty in Afghanistan, I read David Rees' "Get Your War On" and was not overly impressed; I wrote a decidedly unenthusiastic review of the book. I read that book's follow-up, "Get Your War On II" about two years later, after completing a tour in Iraq. Either Rees' writing has gotten sharper, or I just became more receptive to his work, because I think that GYWO2 is brilliant. This book of cartoons maintains the general format and style of its predecessor, and also follows up on the original's subject matter. The cartoons generally depict a bunch of anonymous white-collar office drones who discuss the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other topics from early 21st-century headlines.
Rees has crafted a richly ironic volume of political satire that is full of profanity and scathing dialogue. Nobody is safe--along the way his nameless characters mock George Bush, Tony Blair, Halliburton, Fox News, Fidel Castro, Condoleezza Rice, Joe Lieberman, _The New York Times_, Ahmad Chalabi, Tom Daschle, North Korea, Pat Robertson, Ted Koppel, and many other entities. Rees covers many topics: gang rape, abortion, genocide, anthrax mailings, the search for WMDs in Iraq, political saber-rattling over steroid abuse, the 9/11 commission, the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, proposed designs for the new World Trade Center, and more. Adding to the pungent flavor of the book are the characters' many absurd pop culture references--Paris Hilton, 2 Live Crew, _Tiger Beat_, _The Family Circus_, etc. It's all made even funnier by the generally bland appearances of Rees' characters.
Rees is at his best when he is deconstructing and reshaping the jargon and catchphrases of the post-9/11 U.S.: "Axis of Evil," "Coalition of the Willing," "Freedom Fries," and many more. He offers a lacerating meditation on the use of language as a propaganda tool. His characters exchange some harsh and thought-provoking comments on language--I love it when one drone chides another, "Parsed much?" Although most of the characters are his typical anonymous office workers, this book also features "Uzbekikitty," an absurd yet tragic metaphor for U.S. coalition building in the War on Terror. At times Rees also plays with and mocks his own format. Among his routines in the book is a series of biting knock-knock jokes.
Despite the humor of the book, I consider it a serious interrogation of the language, icons, orthodoxies, and pieties of the post-9/11 era. Rees doesn't just slaughter America's sacred cows--he drops a nuclear bomb on them. GYWO2 could serve as a scalding counterbalance to the many inspirational and heroic narratives that have been spun from the Global War on Terror. For a great companion text I recommend "Weapons of Mass Deception: The Uses of Propaganda in Bush's War on Iraq," by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber.
Damn.......2004-11-13
Just like the first Get Your War On, this collection made my day. This book is perfect for people with a short attention span and left leaning politics.
Yes! Reese does it again!.......2004-11-12
GWYO was one of my favorite all time comics, and Rees follows it up with another hilarious book. I want part III!!!
Right on the money..........2004-11-05
It's a neat trick, getting people to laugh at incredibly depressing observations.
Book Description
Few Hollywood memoirs have offered as distinctive and candid a perspective on the film industry as producer and studio executive Mike Medavoy's You're Only As Good As Your Next One. Here is a deeply personal history of four decades in American film, told by a pivotal player in the creation of more than three hundred films -- or, as Medavoy distinguishes them, "one hundred great films, one hundred good films, and one hundred for which I should be shot." Included are eight Best Picture Oscar winners. On all of them, he knows the behind-the-scenes dramas, who got credit for whose achievements, and who didn't get credit but should have.
His ties to four major studios mirror the most fascinating chapters in American filmmaking. At United Artists, he and his partners were behind the creative revolution of the hot young directors of the 1970s, and they backed such seminal films as Apocalypse Now, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Rocky. At Orion Pictures, he backed such '80s smashes as Amadeus, The Terminator, Platoon, and The Silence of the Lambs. He navigated the '90s corporate culture at TriStar Pictures, green-lighting Philadelphia and Sleepless in Seattle. Now at his own Phoenix Pictures, the producer of such acclaimed works as The People vs. Larry Flynt and The Thin Red Line controls his destiny, but never strays far from controversy. Medavoy pulls no punches in telling his story of financial and political maneuvering, great triumphs and the inevitable disasters, and working with the industry's brightest star power including Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Milos Forman, Jonathan Demme, Francis Coppola, John Milius, Terrence Malick, Kevin Costner, Tom Hanks, Jane Fonda, Warren Beatty, Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, Meg Ryan, Dustin Hoffman, and countless others.
This is also the story of how movie studio buyouts have stymied the creative process and shaped the future of film. Gone is the hands-off golden age that spawned some of the most influential and successful films of our time. An eyewitness to Hollywood history in the making, Mike Medavoy gives a powerful and poignant view of the past and future of a world he knows intimately.

You're Only as Good as Your Next One by Mike Medavoy.......2005-06-17
Mike Medavoy's Bio is a very good educational book
Dear Sirs:
(...) I spend all my days after school and during the week-ends watching movies at home with my friends and our parents. We like, especially, all the Mike Medavoy's movies: Holes, Apocalypse Now, Rocky, Basic, Robocop, Cliffhanger, The 6th Day, Apt Pupil, The Thin Red Line, Terminator, Hook, Platoon... We like his movies because he is a producer with conscience. For these reasons I think that the Mike Medavoy's Bio is a very good educational book. This book really deserves to be distributed in all the Schools, Colleges and Universities of Cinema of the Country (Hey, teacher, thank you!).
Plus I really think that Mr. Medavoy is a Good Man, a Good Son, a Good Father and a Good Friend. He never judge the other People (he just writes the history) and he is always helping a lot of great talents. He is an unique human being in Hollywood. Mike Medavoy knows how to do movies with an extraordinary talent and with great love.

Did not like this book.......2005-02-16
This book was not compelling and the story of Mike Medavoy simply not interesting. It seems like his life has always been about himself. After all, he's married a half a dozen times, continues to cheat, has kids who are a mess and he is grotesque. So if you are going to learn form somebody read about Ted Turner, Jack Warner...Medavoy shouldn't have a book deal in the first place. This was a total waste of my time.

It's a really Great book!.......2003-09-01
This is my favorite Arthur book. It is very funny & a creative idea. I first checked this book out from our school library. I liked it so much that I bought my own copy so I can read it again & again.
It is Prunella's 9-1/2 birthday. On her half birthday, everything was in halves. Her friends give her half of things for her birthday. Her older sister, Rubella, gives her a fortune telling Cootie-Catcher.
Every day everyone lines up in front of Prunella's house so they can ask the Cootie-Catcher a question since they can only ask one question a day. It is funny because everyone kept doing what the Cootie-Catcher said to do because they thought they would be cursed if they didn't do exactly what it said.
In the back of the book, it shows you how to make a Cootie-Catcher. This is a really great book!
A can't miss Arthur book!.......2001-12-11
"Arthur and the Cootie-Catcher" is a book that I'm more than sure kids will love. It has an exciting storyline, and I like how Marc Brown was smart to put in the instructions. There were too amy good parts, so I can't say which part's my favorite. Either way, I highly recommend that everyone should read this.
Arthur and the Cootie CatcherArthur and the Cootie Catcher.......2001-04-11
Arthur and the Cootie Catcher Author: Marc Brown This book is good for grades 2,3 and 4, because it is a big print and easy to understand. It let's you in on a fact to not to believe everything you hear or see. I highly recommend it if you like things that can tell the future or they think it can tell the future!!

This item was an alright buy...I was a bit disappointed with the seller because some of the info in it was missing..so my comment on what I did receive, the book is cool but too expensive for what is inside of it. Maybe its great a discounted rate but not the regular klutz price, its not worth it.
Do You remember Cootie Catchers? Great Distraction!.......2002-10-14
You remember 'Cootie Catchers' don't you?
(Although we used to call them "Fortune Tellers".) A paper square is folded and refolded so that there are four "pyramids". The player uses the index finger and thumb from both hands to open and close the pyramids, revealing pictures, numbers, words, or letters on the inside surfaces.
The person who is having their fortune told chooses from the pictures once, twice, or three times, and then the paper is unfolded to reveal a "fortune"- a little gem of advice, warning or congratulations, written inside.
This kit provides some precolored lovely, intriguing and creative designs ready to cut out and use. More importantly, it has all the guidelines necessary for you to make your own designs using any square piece of paper. You can make them larger or smaller once you have the idea.
When my 7-year-old niece got this as a distraction for a long car ride to our vacation, she generously shared the patterns with her 6 and 8-year-old cousins. They stayed in the Cootie Catcher phase for weeks, making their own, with wilder, and more outrageous fortunes.
This is a terrific little kit for kids around age 7, and for the inexpensive price, it provides hours of entertainment for car rides and other times when a distraction would help. If it doesn't quite keep them quiet, at least they're having fun!
Hours of fun!.......1999-12-11
We found this one at a craft store for my then 5 year old son. He loved the idea of making up his own fortunes--we helped him fold his catchers. It really helped develop his fine motor skills--it takes concentration to hold one and manipulate a catcher! The designs are great! Bright and colorful--and there are ready made catches plus blank ones to fill-in too! They come in a spiral note book-type format...they are easy to remove and complete directions are very helpful! :)
