Book Description
This book addresses one of the most troubling questions of contemporary art theory and practice: Who is contemporary art for? Although the divide between contemporary art and the public has long been acknowledged, this is the first time that artists, critics, and the public have come together to debate the problem and to make artmaking, criticism, and public reaction part of the same process. Like the exhibitions, discussions, and seminars held at "The Castle" during the summer 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, this book is based on the premise that contemporary artists and the general public have something to say to each other. By positing the space of "conversation" as one in which artworks can be experienced as creative sites open to multilayered interpretations by changing audiences, the book provides an antidote to the modernist connoisseurial silence that has long been used to define quality.
The book is divided into three sections. The first contains essays by project curator Mary Jane Jacob, critic and coeditor Michael Brenson, and cultural critic Homi K. Bhabha. Their essays describe fresh approaches to contemporary art and its audiences at a time of increased access through technology and decreased government funding. The second section contains essays by the six artists/collaborative teams involved in the project. Their works, aimed at public participation, included installation-performances, collaborations with Atlanta communities, cross-country tours, and the creation and presentation of food as a means to stimulate conversation and construct community. The artists are: artway of thinking (Italy), Ery Camara (Senegal/Mexico), Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg (Brazil/Switzerland), Regina Frank (Germany), IRWIN (Slovenia), and Maurice O'Connell (Ireland). The final section contains seven essays by the critics, curators, educators, administrators, and artists who led the "Conversations on Culture" at The Castle. The essays are by Jacquelynn Baas, Michael Brenson, Lisa Graziose Corrin, Amina Dickerson and Tricia Ward, Steven Durland, Susan Krane, and Susan Vogel.

Customer Reviews:
Amusing but short.......2006-09-27
I enjoyed the book, but I had read it in an hour, and I have no desire to read it again. So what do I do with it now? I'll give it to someone else. Save your money and borrow this book from a friend or from the local library.
Actual Reviews...........2003-05-01
The 1st of 2 books by Charles M. Sevilla (with others on this book) that takes a humorous look at life in the courtroom. I'm sure that a lot of you have gotten the e-mail with excerpts from this book (which is what prompted me to buy the book and the 2nd "Disorder in the Court"). With quotes like "Then I object to the District Attorney objecting to my objecting to standard legal objections" (p. 60) there is something in this book to tickle everyone's funny bone. Anyone in or around the legal professions should find this book amusing. Amusing illustrations illuminate some of the quotes. I found some quote more amusing that others, but over all got a good chuckle out of the book. Over all this is a good book. It would be great for the beach - pick it up, put it down and pick it up again, no worrying about loosing your place in the story.
Funny in the first degree!.......2000-01-20
Another book that covers the misquotes of the legal system? Maybe but the funny stories that you will read make it a real pleasure to review this book. This 170 plus page book of stories and illustration are actual excerpts from cases and I am glad to have read this book.
Covered in the book is testimony from expert witnesses, the jury selection process, cross-examinations, opening and closing arguments and the sentencing phase. Each section is so enjoyable and so funny, I found myself laughing for hours.
Poking fun at the legal profession is getting to be too easy and this book proves it. The stories are great and coupled with the fantastic illustrations you have an unbeatable combination. A real collectors item for those in and out of the legal field.
The verdict is in and it's unanimous, guilty of laughter in the first degree. Well done and congratulations on a fine and hilarious book!
hilarious, incredible, and REAL!.......1999-05-02
This is the kind of book that is hard to put down once you've started reading it. Except to say that it was given to me by a lawyer and every lawyer, paralegal, and secretary that I've shared it with has loved it, there's nothing more to say. If you find courtroom proceedings (trial and otherwise) interesting, GET THIS BOOK.

Book Description
"White Trash" was what they called the boy, just because he wore hand-me-down overalls and lived on the wrong side of the tracks over near Shake Rag. Oh, how things changed when his mama scrimped and saved to buy him a second-hand guitar. It was his best friend. But he caught the real fever from the "good news" gospel music and the sweet rich jazz that poured out of the juke joints in that town. One day he would show all of the doubters. With his music, one day, he would wake up the world! Amy Littlesugar and artist Floyd Cooper create a powerful book that challenges the rumors and stereotypes of one of the most controversial musical legends of our time.

The King Lives!.......2000-12-22
I orginally purchased this book for my Mom who is a real huge Elvis Presley fan. She was delighted to add this book to her evergrowing collection of Elvis thins. One day, while listening to an Elvis CD - my four year old started asking questions about Elvis. Talk about coincidence! We pulled out the book and Grandma read the story based on Elvis's beginnings. She had tears in her eyes remembering how Elvis came from nothing and rose to such awesomeness. My four year old loved the book too. A great gift for an Elvis fan or for reading and teaching a young child about his life. Nicely written for children to understand and beatuifully illustrated. A must have!!!
Customer Reviews:
GREAT FUN.......2005-09-16
If you enjoy logic puzzles this one is for you! I loved it! Most were easy to figure out-but fun anyway!
Challenging Indeed.......2005-07-28
The stories are written with a sprightly kind of grace that recalls the ghost writers who write Murder She Wrote Jessica Fletcher mysteries for her. I wonder if Mr. Ken Weber uses any pseudonyms. The only problem is that the solutions are too hard. I couldn't solve any of the first fifteen problems I tried, and I was really busting my balls to be frank, trying to work out the weaknesses in the witnesses' stories. I think the answers depend on facts of the natural world that nobody knows, not even the experts. And plus, well, how about the solution which proves that people couldn't have seen what they claimed to see because, if they had been out on their lawn the way they said, mosquitoes would have bitten them? May I humbly add, WTF? Mosquitoes don't bite everybody for one thing, and secondly, they never said mosquitoes didn't bite them, so where's the lie?
However, I should be blaming myself, not Ken Weber, because he constructed the trap, I just fell into it. He duped me good and isn't that why we buy these crazy puzzle books anyhow?
A few other comments, I was surprised by how Canadian these puzzles were! The very first one sort of assaults you with Canadianness. It's all about a "police constable," he's the hero who has to determine if a deaf woman is lying or not. "Constable"? That's not an American usage is it? Thus we learn a little about our neighbors to the North every time we buy a Ken Weber book. They must be awfully proud of him up there, I hope that he is properly respected in his native land.
Other reviewers have said that this book is too easy for them! That'll show you, I'm probably just a dummy so don't go by me.
A non-traditional approach to logic puzzles........2004-06-29
This book contains thirty-seven puzzles aimed at testing your logic, perception and knowledge, and which only take around five minutes to read and solve.
Organized in a numbered format and placed in the first section of the book, the puzzles are presented as a short story of a mystery or an unsolved crime-case, posing, at the end of each, a question or two for the reader to answer. The assortment of mysteries offered includes murder, theft, blackmail and deception, among others; and they are often clever, engrossing, and even funny. These mysteries will test both your reading and comprehension skills, as well as your problem solving abilities.
The solutions, sequentially arranged in the second section of the book, can usually, and frequently too easily, be arrived at through the clues contained within the mysteries. Only a few exceptions, which rely on what seemed to me as somewhat esoteric facts, not necessarily familiar to every reader, are a bit frustrating. But, since each solution gives both the answers to each mystery and line of reasoning used in figuring them out, some light is shed on those obscure facts.
One thing lacking in this book is an introduction or foreword, which might have given this volume a better overall presentation, the author a way to explain his purpose in putting this book together, and the reader a chance to get to know a little more about the author.
Overall, this book is a good and entertaining way to get launched into the world of the games of logic.

diverting but not too taxing.........2001-11-28
I love logic puzzles and the like so this seemed like it would be something I'd enjoy. I found the book to be interesting, but the solutions to the puzzles were generally a bit easy, I often managed to pick out the clue and solve the puzzle after just one read through. I have read all the Sherlock Holmes books though - so I am kind of attuned to such foreshadowing....This would make a great book for younger people, who might find such a book a good introduction to logic puzzles.
Unique, engaging, but can be esoteric.......2001-03-12
If you like solving puzzles, but want something different from the traditional word or logic puzzles that you are used to, you'll like this book. The idea of making each puzzle a mystery that needs to be solved is both clever and engaging.
One of the nicest things about each mystery is that it does only take about 5 minutes to read through, making it easy to pick up the book at any time and complete an entire mystery.
The biggest problem with the book is that the solutions oftentimes rely on facts that I find a bit esoteric, such as how certain airplane models are built. But, not all of the mysteries are like this. I would recommend this book to any puzzle lover.
Book Description
Today’s managers and investors are bombarded with so many conflicting economic reports and data that it seems impossible to know which way the market will turn until it’s too late. Now, a thirty-five year Wall Street veteran enables managers and investors to stop relying on conventional economic forecasts (which are usually wrong), and confidently analyse how the market will impact their industry, business, or stocks. The author unveils his proven forecasting model—based on just a few key economic indicators—for identifying major directional changes in the economy and adjusting business and investing strategies accordingly. A simpler and more pragmatic approach to forecasting: user-friendly approach draws from empirical observation and first-hand practice rather than abstract economic theories Great timing: will appeal to the many business people and investors who got burned in the dotcom bust because they didn’t see the downturn coming Proven model developed by a bonafide Wall Street sage: Ellis is widely respected as a sage when it comes to analysing economic trends based on over three decades as a successful Wall Street analyst Novel, counterintuitive, accessible: goes against the grain of common wisdom about what really drives the economy and makes practical tools available to a wide audience of practitioners for the first time Appendix B in the book specifically relates the methodology in the main section of the book to possible application in the UK, Canada, Germany, France, and Japan
Customer Reviews:
Take bashing by the theorists wth a grain of salt.......2007-07-22
Another reviewer remarked that this book did not pass the Statistics 101 test. It is true that Ellis provides no supporting data for his ideas.
However, in some of my own work I did find considerable support for one important aspect of the Ellis approach: his suggestion that readers ignore quarterly or monthly percent changes and focus instead on year over year changes.
I, too, look at data year over year. I did not work with the exact same data sets Ellis discusses, but among the sets I did use, I noticed that multi-factor models of stock, bond and commodity returns against economic series showed t-scores below 1.00 when the variables were expressed as monthly returns. The theorists who bash Ellis here know that anything below 2.00 should be deemed suspect. But when, I re-cast the same sets of variables on a year-to-year basis, the t-scores jumped above 2.00, in fact, most were above 5.00 and some were above 10.00. That, or course, doesn't "prove" things (correlation vs. causation, curve fitting, yada yada yada). But it does add support to Ellis' claim that going year-to-year, which removes a lot of noise, can be very helpful.
It is not that simple.......2007-07-20
Don't get me wrong, the book has its merits.
It cuts through hundreds of economic indicators to select a few that make economic sense, telling a convincing story (but oversimplified). It will help mostly people with some market experience but lacking enough flying hours in macroeconomic (big-picture) thinking.
Pros :
1 - Acessible to people without an advanced degree, seeking a non-overly-technical introduction to both macroeconomics and its relation to stock market over time.
2 - Explain everything in a intuitive way
3 - Clearly tells his perspective of "how" and "why" things happen in economics, however some of the causalities he writes in the book may not be a consensus among economists or professional analysts.
Cons :
1 - Oversimplifies Inflation, foreign trade, budget deficits, the role of politics and expectations, global economics
2 - Overstates the importance of "charting" and lacks even the most basic "statistics 101" test.
3 - Macroeconomic history is a lot more complex than this book tries to show, with different monetary policy periods (keynesians in 60s and 70s - monetarists in 80s), different fiscal policies ("anomalies" in the book), productivity growth, shocks, demographics, wars, etc.
How stock market reacts to economic changes is also not that simple and may confuse even smart (but naive) guys who may think they understood a lot of macro-thinking after reading this book..
Bottom line : Book does not add too much to those already in the field. It's a very good introduction to an average investor seeking more macroeconomic knowledge (big-picture investing), but be *very careful* with oversimplification of economic history, hidden unstable relations between variables and not-that-simple theoretical subjects;
Ahead of the Curve.......2007-07-09
This book describe the how the market work in a very concise and simple way. Fantastic. Also maintain a site of market data update.
clear and sensible.......2007-06-06
I am only about 75% finished, but Mr. Ellis has a clear and simple writing style. His arguments are easy to follow and understand. His analysis and data treatment are compelling. I would recommend this book to a junior market analyst (or home investor who would like to understand market forecasting on year/decade time scales).
This book is definitely worth reading........2006-11-08
The author's approach toward economic data is very refreshing, in that he works quite hard at finding data that is predictive of stock market declines. Just the chapter on the "recession obsession", and why its bad for you makes the whole book worthwhile. It really put a lot of economic numbers in perspective, and made me realize it was actually possible to use economic numbers to your advantage.
I would also add that his writing style is very easy to follow. While it definitely helps if you have some background in economics, it is really not necessary.
