This book should be titled, "A Different Way To Draw Action Dragonball Z" When I bought the series of these books for my children, I had hoped it taught sound and practiced drawing techniques that I wanted them to see, inline with what I taught them. Disappointed to say the least. If you get a chance to look at the book before you buy, just do one thing first... Look at page 16... need I say more.
(ps. the 1 star is for the colouring-in use my youngest gets from it)

The greatest tribute to the greatest power pop band in music.......2007-09-25

The most engrossing band bio I've ever read, and also one of the saddest stories in music. I find it funny that the two biggest debunkers of the author of this book are also two people who haven't read it! The story spans the very beggining, when they were known as the Iveys, to the ASCAP debacle in which Pete Ham and Tom Evans were utterly disrespected in front of an audience for their wonderful accomplishment of having written Without You. No stone is left unturned and unfortuntely some of the people involved should crawl back under theirs but haven't.

Dear Joey and Kathie: You can fool some of the people, but you haven't fooled me. At least Pete doesn't have a grave, or else I'm sure you would have been dancing on it quite happily. Why did you have to be part of the problem?

THE BADFINGER STORY.......2007-07-30

A wonderful book. I knew very little about this band other than a couple of great songs I heard on the radio in the early 70's. By the time I finished the book I felt like I'd known them all my life. I couldn't help but get emotionally involved in their plight...Highly recommend

A handbook on what not to do in the music biz.......2006-12-30

The "tragic" story of Badfinger couldn't be a better title for this book or this band. So much talent and ability and such bad management and naivete' destroyed not just a band but many lives in the process. I believe every young musician should read this book and learn from their mistakes.

Well, after attempting to write a review on a purchase I made through Amazon itself, my review was removed. Why I ask....who knows!?!

This is a wonderfully balanced book. Don't listen to the non-sense about it being biased. Both Joey and Mike have appeared with the author of this book. Apparently, somebody trying to create some sort of "Cheap Heat" to sell a little more copies.

Bottom line....awesome story of a Band which was done over, abused and a band who made some music that many people missed out on and were not able to listen to....a darn SHAME!!

If you like this Book.......please be sure to listen to Wish You Were Here LP (not to be confused with Pink Floyd) and watch the VH1 and the DVD release. Not to be missed...brilliant over-views!!!

Great concept, poorly edited.......2004-11-18

Ok, I saw this book and thought it would be great. For $50 I figured not a bad investment, get a finished product at the end. I encountered many, many issues in this book! Many of the tutorials were wrong, and they didn't seem to follow the previous steps. Tracks out of place, forgot to tell you to do one thing, mispelled words, etc. I emailed the publisher and they were very gracious, offered me either another product or a refund. I took the refund. It's too bad too, this book had potential. And, I see these same issues crop up in the Premiere Pro book by Baker as well. Maybe someone should offer them the "Editing Text for Dummies"!

Great book.......2004-04-16

It's interesting that people take the time to write reviews (and post them
twice) without taking a couple of minutes to look for solutions. I had
problems with some of the files in the book as well, and it was tracked down
to the fact that Premiere was preinstalled on my computer by the
manufacturer without having files installed that open all the file formats.

Did you bother looking on the author's Web site? If you did, you would find
a complete list of all the files in other formats you can download and use
if the ones on the CD don't work on your particular computer.

no your not crazy.......2004-03-17

the cd dosent work!!!!.I spent hours trying to do the first session but it just doesnt happen.The cd is useless you cant down load files,go vegas 4.0

Do not rely on the CD for the tutorial.......2004-03-17

Not only are the confidence builder files missing, but a number of the source files used in the tutorial are in mpeg format, which cannot be used as source files with MACs (unless you purchase Quicktime Pro which is an additional $29.99) or with Windows if you don't have a capture card that supports mpeg-2. (see the Adobe 6.5 help site at http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/29ad2.htm )
After going back and forth with technical support on the book for three weeks, they've determined I need a different capture card on my computer. I determined that the CD is useless! I have no idea why they would use source files that cannot be imported using Adobe Premiere 6.5 in a coursebook on learning Adobe Premiere 6.5. It was incredibly frustrating! If you do not wish to walk through the projects on the CD, I'm sure the book is useful, but if you actually want to go through the course, make sure you have Windows and a capture card that supports mpeg-2.

Baker's book is not for the novice........2003-06-09

If you're new to Premiere 6.5 I suggest getting Sam's Teach Yourself in 24 hours as it's much more complete and takes you by the hand from starting right into learning how to do DVD authoring and making the DVD on DVDitLE which comes with Premiere.

Donna Baker's book if full of pretty pics and I got it after getting some experience with .. even so I couldn't do the 'confidence builder' tutorial at the beginning of the book as the instructions were not clear enough. She also like A/B editing and tells you to set up Premiere 6.5 that way AFTER you've done the first tutorial project...and of course it's too late to make that change in setup. There is a workaround that, but Baker doesn't even tell you what it is!

I must admit that she has some interesting projects and hints and I did learn, but thank God I didn't start with this book or I would have given up months ago.

By the way I can't understand why Sam's book is the only one that covers ALL aspects of working with Premiere right to the final MPEG2 steps of doing DVD's...all the others leave the novice hanging up there in the air. Premiere is a difficult software and not very user friendly - be prepared for a long learning curve and a fast growing appreciation for all the time and work necessary in film editing.

A great book by a great player.......2007-01-01

This is perhaps the greatest tournament book ever written. Bronstein's his psychological insights into the thinking processes of strong GMs make this book a must-have for players of all strengths.

In particular, players of sub-2200 rating will find this book a treasure and a careful study will certainly enhance your understanding of the game. For a creative and tactical genius, Bronstein does not weigh down the book with detailed variation analyses, but focusses on the broad thinking of positional and strategic matters.

Kotov in his classic "Think Like a Gramdmaster" quotes freely from this book.

The easy, conversational style of the annotations makes it a pleasure. Witness this (I am not quoting from memory here) - "It is time to introduce the reader to the secret of the backward d6 pawn in the King's India Defence...". The paragraph that follows is a deep insight into one of the fundamental positions of the KID.

Buy this book. You will be much the better player for it.

Review of Zurich International Chess tournament, 1953.......2006-08-25

Excellent, chatty entertaining annotations. Elucidates the evolution of the philosophy underlying chess strategy in excellent prefaces.

Does not live up to the hype.......2006-07-23

This book is constantly reviewed in glowing terms. In my opinion, this exalted status is not at all warranted. Yes, this was a great tournament with many games of very high quality. Yes, Bronstein is a brilliant and imaginative player who writes well. Furthermore, I definitely applaud Bronstein's goal "to avoid weighing down his book with variations." Nothing is more annoying than an anno-Fritzed game where the mass of variations cannot be untangled to understand the position.

However, Bronstein errs way too far in the other direction. Many games are "annotated" with no variations at all, with Bronstein relying instead on overly wordy evaluations of positions which do not allow the reader to form an objective opinion. General principles unsupported by any concrete variations are even more unhelpful than too many variations.

For example, compare the analysis of Geller-Euwe, Euwe-Najdorf, Averbakh-Kotov and Keres-Smyslov in Bronstein's book with the analysis of these games in "The World's Greatest Chess Games", and there is simply no comparison. The modern approach by Burgess and Nunn of providing enough variations to allow concrete understanding is overwhelmingly better than Bronstein's discussions of the same games. The game collections of Kotov (Grandmaster at Work), Averbakh (Averbakh's Selected Games), Smyslov (125 Games) and Taimanov (Taimanov's Selected Games) contain games from this tournament, and all of them do a much better job of annotating and explaining than Bronstein.

Overall, I have to go against the consensus and rate Bronstein's book as mediocre. (Don't lynch me.)

Good Games but sometimes analysis is hard to follow.......2005-12-05

I like the games in this book. They are from some of the strongest players in one of the strongest tournaments. Though the analysis to the games seems accurate, I found that some times there was no explanation of things that I had a question about. And the analysis and ideas would lose me at times. Not all that clear.

I liked going over the games in the book. They were very interesting and gave good instruction for the strategies. A very strong tournament with great players!!
I would have given it 5 stars instead of four if the analysis of the games was written so a lower rated player could benefit. I am somewhat higher rated, and still had a few difficulties. But this book belongs in most libraries. I got Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors which was written more for my level and very good. I also liked Logical Chess Move by Move.
