The Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen, known primarily for his mournful tunes of love misplaced, has produced a surprising message of hopeful passion in this playful picture book for grownups in love. The 21 Matisse illustrations sprawl luxuriously across the pages. Art, poetry, and the suggestion of erotic delights... what more can a lover ask?

Book Description

10 years ago, Welcome Books published the star of its Art & Poetry Series, Dance Me to the End of Love, a deliriously romantic song by Leonard Cohen that was brilliantly visualized through the sensual paintings of Henri Matisse. Now for its 10-year anniversary, Welcome is thrilled to present the entirely re-imagined and redesigned Dance Me to the End of Love. With the art of Matisse and the words of Cohen still at the heart of the book, the new look and feel of this Art & Poetry book is overwhelmingly beautiful.
Cohen's song is a lyrical tribute to the miracle of love, the grace it bestows on us and its healing, restorative power. Originally recorded on his Various Positions album, and featured in Cohen's anthology, Stranger Music, this poetic song is gloriously married to the art works by Henri Matisse, perhaps the greatest artist of the twentieth century. "I had this dance within me for a long time," Matisse once said in describing one of his murals. Dance Me to the End of Love is the perfect book for art lovers, song lovers, and all other lovers as well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dance Me to the End of Love.......2007-09-01

It's hard to believe Matisse did not collaborate on this book. The perfect symbiosis of the poetry and illustrations truly dance you through to the end. I bought this book as a gift. I'm keeping it.

1 out of 5 stars Great song, lame irrelevant Matisse.......2007-05-12

Dance Me to the End of Love is a supremely great song, but the sketchy Matisse paintings that promiscuously drape this book do nothing to enhance it.

5 out of 5 stars Way to go again Leonard.......2007-04-17

Top quality. Really lovely. Nice for couples to read together. Great for the coffee table.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and highly recommended title.......2006-10-08

Based upon an original poem by Leonard Cohen which is showcased through the distinctive artwork of Henri Matisse, Dance Me To The End Of Love is a lyrical tribute to the emotion of love and its power to heal broken hearts and broken lives. Gracing the picturebook collections of family, school, and community libraries, this Dance Me To The End Of Love is a unique and highly recommended title that will have a very special appeal to young children and their parents,

5 out of 5 stars The best birthday present ever!.......2005-11-13

Theo my boyfriend, produced this book for my birthday in Feb 2004, it was the best present I have received so thoughtful and different. The words and illustrations compliment each other beautifullly, it is a short book but definetly one you will want to read over and over again.

            Book Description

Film, video games, television ads, corporate presentations-whatever medium you're working in, a visual story is the most compelling way to provide your audience with information and, more important, with an emotional experience. Exploring Visual Storytelling analyzes the essential techniques of creating compelling visual stories. Based on the pioneering work of Minneapolis-based Visual Culture, this innovative book-DVD package examines and explains the fundamentals of the medium by covering the seven key concepts behind every visual story: context, character, conflict, plot, 2D space, 3D space, and time. Each topic is thoroughly explained in print and then applied in the companion DVD, fully demonstrating how these core concepts work together to create a cohesive, compelling story.

                    Book Description

When Jill Soloway was just thirteen, she and her best friend donned the tightest satin pants they could find, poufed up their hair and squeezed into Candies heels, then headed to downtown Chicago in search of their one-and-only true loves forever: the members of whichever rock band was touring through town. Never mind that both girls still had braces, coke-bottle-thick glasses and had only just bought their first bras...they were fabulous, they felt beautiful, they were tiny ladies in shiny pants.

Now that Jill is all grown up and a successful writer and producer, she can look back on her tiny self and share her shiny tales with fondness, absurdity and obsessive-compulsive attention to even the most embarrassing details. From the highly personal (conflating her own loss of virginity and the Kobe Bryant accusations), to the political (what she has in common with Monica and Chandra), to the outrageously Los Angelean (why women wear huge diamonds and what they must do to get them), Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants is a genre-defying combination of personal essay and memoir, or a hilarious, unruly and unapologetic evaluation of society, religion, sex, love, and -- best of all -- Jill.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-29

Compared to Laurie Notaro's humorous books, this book is a severe disappointment. I usually have a policy: if I spend money on something, I'm going to finish it. I couldn't even make myself finish the last 50 pages. This book isn't funny...its a rant broke up by interesting chapter titles.

This author really seemed to go from one extreme to the next. One minute she's proud of being Jewish, the next minute she's stating that she's really not that Jewish...One minute she's proud to be able to stand up on her own without a man, the next minute she's focusing in on how her boyfriend has changed her...make up your mind.

And the part that where staff writers only make $2000 a week? Ha, that breaks my heart. Maybe for the next book, the author should make what real America makes--which is significantly less than that.

2 out of 5 stars Not really very funny..........2006-07-31

I think the only reason I finished this book was because I had nothing else to read at the time. This is the memoir of a spoiled, rich girl to whom things have come easily. Three cheers for her, just kind of boring for the reader.

                    3 out of 5 stars kinda disappointing.......2006-04-30

this novel was not all the entertainment weekly promised it to be. and usually they are pretty reliable. this woman is touted to be up there with david sedaris and augusten burroughs, i am sorry to say that she falls well short. not to try and sound sexist, but i think that her writing style and perspective is a little out of my range. it is hard to explain why it was difficult for me to get my head around this novel. i began to wonder if all women thought and acted like this. it is so complicated and manic. but this is my humble opinion. now dont get me wrong there were some really funny parts in the book, but at the same time i really feel like she has room to grow. give it a try, somone else may get more out of it than i did.

1 out of 5 stars Perhaps not a fair review, because I couldn't stand to finish it.......2006-02-04

I made it to the sixth chapter. I didn't stop because I love dogs; I stopped because I couldn't stand to waste any more of my time. I suppose if you want to read the memoirs of a shallow woman, obsessed with celebrities and raised in a wealthy home, this would be a great book for you. Soloway's attempt at cuteness by way of footnotes and parentheticals fell flat with me, perhaps because I disliked her so much by the time I got to those parts. I feel I was roped into thinking this book might have some good feminist insight when there was very little.

3 out of 5 stars Too much and yet not enough.......2006-01-21

I came to this book because I was a fan of Six Feet Under and Soloway of course was a writer for that great show. I don't know, perhaps I expected something more like the show instead of yet another book I feel like I've read too many times before.

Here was yet another entry in the genre of post-60s, somewhat Gen-Xy books in which the author confesses humiliating personal truths, drops pop-culture references by the hundreds, and does her best to be shocking without going too far. Some doses of feminism and political activism are thrown in without really going anywhere, and then we have the familiar life highpoints: an awkward childhood, a complicated and yet exciting sexual awakening, the hard and yet necessary pain of entering adulthood, a long list of pet peeves, the creation of an ideological fantasyland, and finally, reflections on relationships and their myriad problems. All self-involved and all predictable. Deliver all this up in a rambling and exclamatory manner, and you have this book.

Don't get me wrong, the book was entertaining, it just wasn't challenging or original. soloway advises other writers to create a persona, and that is clearly what she's done here. It just didn't appeal to me, though; it struck me as over-the-top, fake and hollow.

One thing that was interesting to read was Soloway's take on men: I'm surprised that more women haven't come around to the belief that they are unnecessary.

                      Book Description

A sparkling collection of interviews with African American directors and producers.

Bringing together more than thirty candid conversations with filmmakers and producers such as Spike Lee, Gordon Parks, Julie Dash, Charles Burnett, and Robert Townsend, Why We Make Movies delivers a cultural celebration with the tips of a film-school master class.

With journalist George Alexander, these revolutionary men and women discuss not only how they got their big breaks, but more importantly, they explore the creative process and what making movies means to them. Why We Make Movies also addresses the business of Hollywood and its turning tide, in a nation where African Americans comprise a sizable portion of the film-going public and go to the movies more frequently than whites. In addition, Alexander’s cast of directors and producers considers the lead roles they now play in everything from documentaries and films for television to broad-based blockbusters (in fact, the highest-grossing film in Miramax history was Scary Movie, directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans). For film buffs and aspiring filmmakers alike, Why We Make Movies puts a long-overdue spotlight on one of the most exciting and cutting-edge segments of today’s silver screen.

4 out of 5 stars African-world filmmakers tell us why they make movies.......2003-10-20

Flashback to 1974. That was the year movie critic Donald Bogle wrote his seminal book, "Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies & Bucks", and suggested that these five African-American stereotypes were used everyday in the mass media and in particular in the cinema. Bogle's five main stereotypes were based on his research of the images that white Hollywood directors and movie audiences advanced about African-Americans. Now fast forward to 2003. Today many of these same images are still reinforced, reshaped and even rewind by black filmmakers, many of whom were interviewed in George Alexander's fine book, "Why We Make Movies: Black Filmmakers Talk About the Magic of Cinema." Still I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding the philosophies and perseverance strategies of this creative colony of artists, activists and scholars. Lots of war stories. And for the most part, they did not shy away from discussing racism in Hollywood. The book is easy to read, and although not billed as a scholarly treatise, wears very well its key words of film and African American/African studies. In fact media and communication scholars will have little problem finding examples of agenda setting theory, propaganda, social responsibility theory and spiral of silence. But even more important, laypersons, movie goers and aspiring filmmakers will enjoy Alexander's ability to present these filmmakers and artists as approachable and genuinely a part of the larger African world community. I am an "index person" and "summary person," therefore, I think these two elements would have added greatly to this book. But I appreciated the fact that whenever a movie was mentioned, the date was included. Journalist George Alexander likes movies and his book provides us with a nice snapshot of many of the industry's black participants as scholars, mainstream filmmakers, documentarians and just plain old entertainers - flaws and all.

4 out of 5 stars Reflecting Cinema: Black Filmmakers Speak.......2003-08-27

It is always a treat to read a work by an author who masters his subject and yet is very humble about his achievement. George Alexander's knowledge of movies comes from exposure to the magic of film at a young age, but also through learning the craft of screenwriting, and filmmaking in general, after college. His book is a gold mine as far as learning about black filmmakers and black filmmaking is concerned; it is almost an alternative, outsider's take on the American Film Industry and beyond. What makes it invaluable though is more that the reader is granted access both to the "Usual Suspects" of black filmmaking fame and the talented, less well-known and upcoming black filmmakers. Furthermore, one of Alexander's major achievements is to have managed to create a space where these two categories of black filmmakers could give us "a master class" in filmmaking.

Given the dynamism, diversity, and ever growing number of black filmmakers making movies successfully nowadays, it was always going to be difficult for Alexander to decide who would be featured in "Why We Make Movies": no criticism focused on why he did not include so and so cannot be taken seriously. But how do you conceptualise such a book? Alexander does a brilliant job here because he manages to propose a structure based on chronology, genre, filmmaking potential, filmmaking achievement, and crossing over, to name but a few. Yet Alexander seems to have no other ambition than taking the reader on "an odyssey across the plains of Black America's contributions to the magic of cinema".

The inclusion of Prof. Manthia Diwawara as the exception that confirms the rule in Alexander's book is more than justified. It is beyond the scope of this review to elaborate on Diawara's extraordinary body of work, e.g. his contributions to African/Black Diapora Studies. However, I would say that with Diawara, Haile Gerima, and Euzhan Palcy featured in "Why We Make Movies", for future editions Alexander might want to widen its concept so as to cater for Black Diaspora Cinema more strongly, and to refocus its central thesis in order to make it less casual. I am putting forward this latter point because "Why We Make Movies" is already a scholarly book, yet one in a position to be improved a great deal. No one interested in (black) cinema can afford to miss it: "that's the truth rruth".

                      5 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2003-06-14

George Alexander's book is a winner! Two thumbs up. One of the best books on Black film available. Look for Alexander to becoming the next great film reviewer. Take it from me - buy this book. You will enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, educational book.......2003-04-02

Lovers of film, and especially those individuals who are interested in the behind-the-scenes action of movie making, will be thrilled by George Alexander's Why We Make Movies. Not only does the book get up close and personal with 35 or so of the most notable filmmakers of our time, it also serves as a historical context for black film, and provides information not commonly known about our favorite actors (including how Tupac got his first role in Juice), scripts, budgets, television productions, and the many problems encountered and conquered when it comes to filmmakers such as Spike Lee, George Tillman, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Robert Townsend, John Singleton, and many more.

The book is upfront about the racial and discriminatory issues that plague the industry and how, perhaps, one should approach filmmaking once they are aware of all the long standing issues. You get to read which scene Spike Lee regrets out of the dozens of movies he's made; you get to read what kind of power, if any, do successful black filmmakers have; you get to know their feelings about the current slate of movies that are being released, how directors prepare for shoots, just a wealth of vital information and tidbits that will broaden your knowledge about the industry.

Although the age range, gender, and backgrounds of the interviewees vary, one common bond is their love for film. Why We Make Movies is an important, eye-opening account that will cause your view of the magic of films to be enhanced.

This is one hilarious book I have ever read in my life! Previn brings all those big name Hollywood directors, producers, actors/actresses and musicians to life with funny little sweet anecdotes. Some of them are funny beyond imagination. I am not the kind of person who laughs aloud when reading or watching TV, but this one, I couldn't help cracking up.
I don't want to spoil it by telling the contents with my stale language skills. You just got to read it yourself!
At the same time you will learn about inside Hollywood in its glorious days. It's amazing how hard those guys worked, and how genius they were!
Very colorful, fun to read, and for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Ah the good ol' days........2002-07-20

I purchased this book as a young classically-trained composer who is interested in writing music for film (or, more precisely, collaborating with filmmakers), hoping to gain some insights into Andre Previn's early career and why he chose not to continue on that path after about a decade.

The book consists of many charming anecdotes about the long-gone era of the big Hollywood studios, where most of the cast and crew were under long-term contract. Many luminaries of that day are charmingly profiled, from Fred Astaire to Busby Berkeley to Billy Wilder, to prominent musicians like Heifetz, Max Steiner, Bernard Hermann and others. Several tales in the book relate
instances of Previn working with ignorant or unprofessional
superiors/leading-ladies/producers/etc. and dealing with their egos, mostly in a gently submissive manner.

Previn also takes time to talk about his days as a jazz musician, which he remembers with great fondness.

In the final chapter, Previn mentions his main reasons for leaving Hollywood. Somewhere between winning four Oscars and contributing to nearly fifty films, he no longer felt challenged. "Since leaving Hollywood, I have had the healthy and sobering experience of constantly working with music that is invariably better than any performance of it can be." He also tells a great story about visiting Jeffrey Katzenberg about a proposed "Fantasia" sequel.

Virtually nothing in this book is of any great "technical" use to budding film-composers or conductors. However, the social anectodes are many and make for a pleasant read.

                      5 out of 5 stars this deserves a reprint.......2000-11-23

This is a most enjoyable book written for all readers-although the more you know about music, the harder you'll laugh. It recalls Previn's youthful days among the musicians in Hollywood, which includes a telling view of the movies' relationship with music. Previn himself is such a proficient musician-classical, jazz, he can write or play in any style-that his point of view is rounded, grounded, and surrounded by crazy ironies.

This isn't a long book or a hard read, making it all the more fun. It would be a fantastic gift item-if it were in print!

4 out of 5 stars Witty and engrossing.......2000-09-24

In this autobiography, Andre Previn takes you on a candid and entertaining journey through his years working as composer, arranger, conductor and accompanist in the undoubted film capital of the world, Hollywood.

It is fascinating and funny all at once. The American film institution has always been admired and criticised, and Previn details some of the high and low points of being a part of it: the fact that musicians in Hollywood are a long-suffering breed at the hands of actors, producers and directors who haven't got a clue about music; the accounts of film personnel as seen at work and away from the glamour that publicly accompanies them; stories of wildly extravagant experiences that make up the off-hours and nightlife of the Hollywood populace. Previn also has plenty of musical experiences to relate: studying with Pierre Monteaux (conductor of the premiere of "The Rite of Spring"), playing Stravinsky's piano music and receiving the composer's comment afterwards, rubbing shoulders with other members of the Screen Composers Guild including William Walton, playing snooker with Schoenberg and consulting Shostakovich (via an interpreter) for information about his string quartets. We learn some remarkable things about a bygone era in cinema history, as well as a few home truths about living and working in Hollywood's incomparable atmosphere. All in all, it is a very amusing tale.

Previn reveals himself to be a great storyteller: his tone of writing is friendly and hands-on, and fans of Bill Bryson may recognise in Previn the same kind of bemused wit. For musicians, this is certainly an enjoyable account. For the casual reader, this is a good way to spend a few hours at home, on the train or in the air. My copy is much-thumbed, I can tell you...

                                  Book Description

When Joel became a priest of the new god Finder, he knew it meant forfeiting the honor and security of his position as a master bard. Now his freedom and his very life are at stake as powers of evil embroil the priests of Finder in a struggle against a plot to resurrect the dead god Bane.

With his only allies the young freedom fighter Holly Harrowslough, the mysterious winged woman Jas, and the aging priest Jedidiah, Joel embarks on a mission to recover the Hand of Bane. His quest leads him from the Realms all the way to the extra-planar city of Sigil. There Joel must rely on all his courage, wisdom, and strength to thwart the return of Bane the Tyrant and rescue the god Finder from imminent death.

Finder's Bane is the fifteenth in an open-ended series of novels focusing on the Harpers, the secret organization for Good in the Forgotten Realms fantasy world.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A big send off..........2007-04-11

This was the curtain call for the highly talented and very creative team of Novak and Grubb who helped create most of TSR's fantasy worlds: Forgotten Realms, Al Quadim, Spelljammer and Planescape are all Mr Grubb's visions. I honestly thought this was about the return of Bane-an evil god from the Forgotten Realms who was previously killed.

This writing team can make a very humorous spectacle and some very great storytelling. This story takes elements from Forgotten Realms, Spelljammer and ends with Planescape. Its hats off time as these old worlds are "phased out" with Wizards of the Coast. I felt these worlds had ran thier course, with the exception of Forgotten Realms. Jeff Grubb has one more novel-Tymora's Luck.

The books itself is not great, but it has its moments. It was not what I expected, and this was not a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome return to form.......2003-02-23

Just as good as the original Alias novels; colourful, well-written, and enjoyable. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Priest of Finder.......2001-10-22

This is a great book leading into the life of young Joel, priest of Finder. Novak and Grubb do a good job showing his tourmoil for turing his back on all bards by worshipping the god "of wreckless fools" and his future triumph in the planes.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A fun book.......2001-04-09

This book is very easy reading matirial. It's story isn't comlicated and the conflicts arn't so bizzar. But above that this book is very fun to read, you can't wait to read what'll happened next .And more to it, the book show a thological conflict about who need who more the god his followers or the opposit. The butiful thing his that you see it without any complication and annoying thing in the plot. this book worth it's money

                                  5 out of 5 stars wonderful! a startleing masterpiece.......2000-09-28

Oh, poor Bane, did you misplace your essence again? =) No, But this book is wonderful! The troubled cleric, unsure that he would be good, meets his god! Finder, the God of Reckless Fools, =) is a stunning performance! Never again will I say no to Forgotten Realms! I'm currently a 12th Wizard, 4th sorceror, 4th bard, 3rd D&D, for you who understand that...

1 out of 5 stars The Theory in this book doesn't fit the facts........1998-10-04

This attack on soap opera attempts to tell the readers that soap opera, like other forms of popular entertainment, glorifies the role of the father and brainwashes its viewers to be submissive to patriarchal imperitives However, the theory in this book simply panders to the most narrow-minded of extremist feminists. The theory does not fit the facts. Soap opera is one of the major popular entertainments that permits critical questions about the excesses of the father's prerogatives to surface. By discussing small fragments of soap opera story arcs as if they were the whole thing, this book distorts its subject and renders a major disservice to its reader.
